@@Charles-472 Hi, here’s a foundational understanding of Marxs theory Central Economic Problem Humans have UNLIMITED desires and only LIMITED resources in which to fulfill those desires. There will always be SOME level of scarcity and trade offs will NEED to be made. There is NO solution to this problem due to the laws of the physical universe, as far as we know the real world has X amount of X resource. This problem just leaves us with our best attempt to answer 3 questions. WHAT should be produced? HOW should it be produced? WHO should it be produced for? What Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels argued is that the factors of production which are Land, Labor, and Capital should be controlled through VARIOUS means of SOCIAL OWNERSHIP to best serve the interests of society. To best use our material reality for the benefit of ALL humans. This is why Communism is associated with Egalitarianism. The problem most people argue is that one form of Social ownership, which is state ownership, is a horrible way to control Capital, and it is. What they fail to understand is that, fundamentally, a government only represents society as long as it fights for democracy. What happens in a Capitalist society that becomes a plutocracy or a corporatocracy such as the United States? The same thing the Soviet Union suffered from, centralized power over Capital in the hands of a few, the only difference being Capitalists don’t even ATTEMPT to represent society, they’re MUCH less subject to scrutiny than the government even though they are often the same actors. What tends to happen in a Capitalist society is those with the power over Capital, Capitalists, make the state their puppet and use their control over the means of education to preserve their power. The best example of this is the history of the Red Scare in the US and the period of massive power in the hands of capitalists in America between the years 1870-1899 called the Gilded Age. This is why Karl Marx argues that the state is nothing but an oppressive tool to be used against society should Democracy fail to prevail in the face of Capitalist power, which it often does.

I am from Germany and the biggest change in perspective happened when my senior history class was taught by an openly leftist teacher and politician. I read all of his books which are basically laying out big historic events in a leftist way. Also, i was much more interested in history itself, exploring different views on the history we get taught. I realized, that this is what history class SHOULD be about. If you're feeding your students the same perspectives every time they attend your class, history just becomes a dead book that everyone has to read in their mother tongue class.
Glad you brought up D.A.R.E. because in 6th grade we had to come up with skits for that class and I did pot as the topic. The officer did not like my skit because the info was all wrong. I actually do have a socialist Professor on my campus. She taught a class on racism in the United States and consistently brought up anti-capitalist points. Some of her influences were leftists like Angela Davis as well.
I am extremely fortunate that the university I attended had a political science class entirely based on marxism, socialism, and communism. The professor taught the differences between the 3. It was one of my favorite classes I've ever taken.
My professor was an open and self-proclaimed communist. I was that conservative student who would challenge him a lot. He was not granted tenure from the university because of his views.

@@Deode-d4h I’m 22, so I am still definitely maturing. Being raised very culturally conservative in a nation like the USA has made me skeptical of Socialism/Communism. I would say that I still believe in a lot of Social Conservative beliefs(though very modest at best now), but for my economic beliefs, it's motivated by living up to what Conservativism claims to be. “If you work hard enough you can do anything”, well I believe that is only true with a pragmatic economic policy. Which leans me towards social democracy. I majored in Economics and Public Administration which may assist in what shaped that worldview. Interestingly enough, Milton Friedman speaking on the Negative Income Tax is what led me to research social Democratic policies.
@@Seven_Speaks Honestly its hard for me to understand what it's like growing up conservative and with some preconceived ideas of capitalism and socialism. I'm 23 and a Sociology major. I grew up in a religious household, but it's mostly apolitical for the most part, well apart for some anti-gay stuff occasionally. I never picked up on pro-capitalist sentiments growing up, so for me it's always just been about seeing which ideas I liked more. Since you're on this channel, I'm sure you've seen Second Thought talk about worker owned businesses. I just think that's a pretty good idea in general, let the people who know the job direct and manage how the job is done and all that. Also compared to knowing that capitalist business is inherently undemocratic by way of not allowing the workers (the majority) to decide who the manager should be or who gets to run the whole business just feels wrong. I like democracy despite its flaws and I like it to be in a place where most of us will spend a large part of our lives engaging in. That's pretty much why I like Socialism, it's just democratic. Also I heard that people in worker owned businesses tend not to hate their job as much, which is a pretty big plus for me. Also, I do think that worker owned businesses probably will serve your conservative ideal of "work hard enough and you can do anything" better. Since it's democratic you have a better shot of convincing your fellow co-workers to vote for policies that work towards that ideal, than convincing a kinda disconnected upper management of the same thing. That's my two cents on socialism.
I also like how capitalism's only tactic to sell itself is "Look how bad Socialist are!" Because they know there's no reasonable argument towards "Why capitalism is good."
The thing I find interesting is that they point to countries that are obviously authoritative dictatorships as examples of socialism and why it can not work. But if you mention the Scandinavian socialist Democracies they will say they are not socialists. And if you say well can we get universal healthcare like they do in Scandinavian countries they say no because that would is socialism. So which is it??? Also I think people get political system and economic system mixed up. Socialism is an economic system not a political one. No economic system is good under a dictatorship for a political system.
I was taught all about "the evils of communism" in my school, still ended up a communist and realized that most of what I "learned" was propaganda. When will they realize that it's not due to education that people are becoming communist (e.g. their constant paranoia about the so-called "Marxist professors" who usually just end up being social-democrats at best), it's because we're experiencing the failure and decay of capitalism and are looking for ways out of it.
@Дмитрий Жуков It works because reality has shown it to work, contrary to bourgeois distortion and lies about history (though it worksagainst the interests of the parasitic classes). Both the Russian and Chinese revolutions brought about liberation from feudalism, imperialism, and capitalist rule - both the Russian and Chinese revolutions ENDED the periodic famines that these regions have been plagued with for hundreds (and in China's case thousands) of years. For example, before Mao came to power, in the 1900s ALONE there were around 30 million famine deaths. Obviously such a situation won't be immediately fixed once a new government comes to power, so yes there was famine in Russia and China after the revolution - but after WWII in Russia and after the GCF in China, famine was no more. The capitalists lie by cutting off the context of hundreds of years of famine and food insecurity and pretending everything was fine before the revolutions. Life expectancy also dramatically increased in these countries (China: 40 yrs in 1949, 61 in 1975, and 76 in 2020) along with nutritional intake, democracy, workers' and peasants' control, and human rights. This is only the tip of the iceberg, but I don't want to bother writing too much down since I could go on all day, so here's a more extensive list: dashthered.medium.com/communism-always-works-bce14ee96f2b

@@Charles-472 Hi, here’s a foundational understanding of Marxs theory
Central Economic Problem
Humans have UNLIMITED desires and only LIMITED resources in which to fulfill those desires.

@@Seven_Speaks That's good. We'll bread pill you eventually. Jokes aside, I'm glad you went Soc Dem. I'm curious to know what objections you have to socialism as an economic practice.

This is only the tip of the iceberg, but I don't want to bother writing too much down since I could go on all day, so here's a more extensive list:
