Shang Yu, the only disney villain who does not sing and knows what he is doing. Mulan the only disney princess who is not princess and has gone to war to fight for and save the entire china. Perfect
Shan Yu is not really such a person, his name is Mete and he is my ancestor, so yes I am also a Hun, Mete is a man who changed the course of world history, did you know that Mete invented the system used by today's armies, he is also the inventor of the war tactic called false retreat and a steppe khan who defeated the Chinese, who was an expert in the art of war
I will never forget when this movie came out in theaters and my parents took me to see it. This scene was so epic and loud. The feeling of watching Shan Yu and the Huns appear after the smoke clears and then they charge at full force, sounding like a football stadium, combined with this phenomenally composed score? Chills. You felt that…. One of the greatest moments in 2D Animation imho.
For me it;s the beginning up to 0:22. I remember watching Shan Yu shadow in the top of the mountain and slowly arising and taking form always scared the shit out of my when I was a kid.
@@CptRomulus You're right. In a hand, Shan Yu is a less good villain than the Horned King because he is less terrifying. But, in the other hand, I think he is more charismatic (and doesn't have a comic relief as his lieutenant). In Taram, we never see the army that fight the Horned King and we never see the men he kill. In Mulan, every Chinese people react to the invasion and we can see how all of them except the emperor is scared when facing the Huns. And, if you want to speak about Frollo, I don't consider him as a good villain. Sorry, I think he's so far better than the other character and the story that he become not so good. I don't know if you have read the original novel. If not, that isn't a problem ; an adaptation must be enjoyed by itself. But, reading the book helps to understand the psychology of Frollo : in the same time, he wants to stay vertuous and to rape Esmeralda. But that's too dark and too deep for a children film. As a result, Frollo isn't well developped, except during a single scene, his song (and that scene sounds much better in french, because Jean Piat). During the rest of the film, he's just a random cruel racist guy who commands the city guard. To make it simple : Frollo is a too deep character from a too deep story for children.
I do understand that Frollo in the Hugo novel was much deeper than Disney's Frollo, and was thus fut for more mature audiences (or should I say readers). I have also heard he is much more of a sympathetic anti-villain in the novel.
Flutes and piccolo, oboes and english horn, clarinets and bassoons. Horns, trumpets, trombones and tuba. Violins, violas, cello and basses. Piano and Harp. Timpani. Percussion: snare drum, bass drum, crash cymbals, tam-tam(and or gong), marimba. There's a percussion that I don't know exactly what it is, it could possibly be a synthetizer percussion which is featured in these two sections: from 0:25 to 0:41 and then again from 1:00 to 1:11. Trombones are playing with mutes in some parts.

Shan Yuu is a boss. As much as I hate his ruthlessness, he's just one of those bad guys that makes being evil seem like a lot of fun. Just look Shang's face when Shan Yuu comes out from behind the snowdrift, even when it's just him.
The battlefield was strangely quiet. As the last wisps of smoke cleared from the mountain slope, a lone horseman appeared. A moment later he was joined by a massive line of soldiers stretching out along the horizone.
I was playing Pandora while I was playing "Skyrim" and this track started to play when a dragon, 2 sabre cats, 4 spiders, 2 bears, and three wolves started to attack me. I could not stop laughing. That's when I realized how much the universe wants me dead. XD
I loved this music it brings me chills everytime I hear it I feel like shit's about to go down when I hear this, and this has brought me so much memories from my childhood. I still watch this, and love this movie at 1:38 Mushu: "U missed how could u missed?! he was three feet in front of u" LOL!! Mushu is one of my favorite characters who's so hilarious in this movie who I think Eddie Murphy did a good job on behind the voice (Sighs) sure does bring me back memories from when I was a kid, and I know all of the lines.
Before this track was played there was a 10 second silence that build up the mood, smoke cleared and revealed Shan Yu alone on his horse atop the hill, then his massive army emerged and covered the horizon. That was truly an "oh yeah, wait, oh shit" moment. When Hun army descended, it was a pleasant (and thrilling) surprise to see WAY more men than it appeared to be. I bet most opponents would crap their pants seeing that. "If we die, we die with honor!" Soldiers' face: Do Not Want!
That moment when they start thundering over the ridge is the bit that gets you (0:26) especially in the film with the battle cries and horses and stuff
0:11 when you see an enemy player you hate really far away on team fortress 2 0:25 you and the enemy player trying to make your way across the map to get in range 1:11 combat starts
What I love is later when Shan Yu meets her again he is pissed for the avalanche and not the fact that she's a woman (Women fought alongside the men within the huns)
@@TotallyNotAFoxI guess the movie's excuse is that all the female Huns stayed behind on the other side of the wall in their homeland to look after the kids, property and to defend their territory from any rival tribes that see an opportunity to take over while Shan Yu is not around since he must have his own share of rivals and enemies back home that would happily try to kill him. But still..... they could have easily drawn one or two female Huns as generic soldiers or even made one of the 5 elite ones a woman like the archer or the skinny long haired one. There's no way the army was the entire Hun race. When you stop and think about it a majority of those Huns in the army were probably husbands and had kids of their own. I know we're not supposed to feel bad for the Huns cuz of what they did to that village but I call bullshit on them not having their own loved ones that were waiting for them to return home. Hell i'm even one to believe Shan Yu had a warrior wife that he loved and left in charge while he went off to China. He didn't get much screen time anyway so who says that he isn't married and was thinking of his wife at some point offscreen? The guy might be bloodthirsty and ruthless but he is not incapable of caring about others. He was respectful to his men and gave an angry shout upon realizing nearly all of them are dead(unlike his crappy KH2 Manga version)implying he did care about them and he never abused his falcon so he must have loved it.
@@TotallyNotAFox There is one thing that also stood out to me: The concubines part Shan Yu's men don't attack Mulan and co with one of them actually trying to be nice and when they realize they're not actually concubines is when they attack. Same goes for Shan Yu as he didn't touch Mulan even when she cut the rope until he realised she wasn't a concubine and finally recognized her as the soldier. Does Shan Yu have a code of honor about not harming women that are concubines even if they happen to be on the enemy side? It's obvious they have no problem harming women that are normal villagers or soldiers but I guess concubines are not to be harmed. I know they're called Huns and not Mongols but screw it they have Mongol elements about them and Mongols had concubines too and the Huns clearly knew what concubines are so the Huns must have concubines back home and don't treat them like shit.
Imagine being in the orchestra recording this and having the music all around you. how hard it must have been to hold back the desire to just start fighting someone. XD

@@robonaught To be fair, it's a kids movie from the late 90's. The overall design of him screams "evil" - he's just meant to be the antagonist.
