Big Elbow is much nicer since the renovations. Good tips! Nice to see another backpacking campground nearby and really a good hike that is short and pretty low elevation gain for beginners or as a bikepacking location.

After endless hours of hiking in rainy conditions in the PNW and elsewhere, I've found the best option to be an umbrella unless it's also really cold and/or windy in which case I'll use my Gore R7 Shakedry. I've gone back and forth between rain chaps and rain skirt, the skirt is my preferred right now due to ease of use and it also functions as a groundsheet, but doesn't work as well in wind. Rain pants are a no go for exactly the reason you mentioned, too hot.
I've only had the Wapta on one rainy hike in the Olympics a couple weeks ago and it was fine, but I wouldn't trust it or any bag to keep things dry as I'm sure you know. You also show one issue I have with the Wapta, which is that you can't comfortably put your sit pad on the back panel as cushion/ventilation and I don't find the hot bonded mesh as comfortable. It's still a great pack though.

I have a Wapta and I use the pack liner for the reason you called out. I was waiting to post this comment to see if you called it out.

I imagine this was at least a few weeks ago - we’re heading out this weekend and I’d almost rather the cool temps than these over 30s! I’m curious if you’ve done the west coast trail before or if you have interest in doing it. It’s definitely on my bucket list, but the possibility of being soaked for a week is a bit of a deterrent!

There is no such thing as a waterproof pack, even if on day one they are on-paper (seam-taped etc). With some trail miles on any pack, abrasion inside and out will either compromise the fabric or the taping or both. Even though I own two "waterproof" packs I always carry a pack liner for my down gear, electronics etc. A wet tent can then always be packed inside the pack when necessary and my dry stuff is always dry.
