I've been playing this song for 10 months, another Pankey student, but hearing your unique intro to it is an incredible bit of variety to find. It's super simple too, just using the triple slide in the other "part" of the song as an opener. You've earned a subscriber.
Very easy and sounds really good. This is the best version I've found also. I think I like your versions so much because you appreciate the twang like I do. The slides, Hammer ons, pull offs, all what I love about the banjo.
Im curious, I've been learning this out of the scruggs book and your version is a bit different. Why do you prefer the 2-3 slide instead of the 2-4 slide? Also I hope I can get this fast soon
Good video. Is there anyway you could do a slower video on the parts from 1:35 to 1:45? there is a lot going on there and despite replaying it over and over, I can't seem to catch it.
I feel like the part i struggle with the most is the "restarting" of the beginning and it just kinda sounds jarry and out of place, is there a way to make it flow more nicely into eachother?
I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but it's really just practice. Nobody can make it flow when they're first starting. It takes lots of practice.
Im so confused when i do a 2to 3 slide on the 3rd string it sounds completely different than when you do am i losing my mind. It sounds like nasty. Ive made sure my banjo is tuned and everything
It just depends on when you do the slide and how you emphasize the notes. It'll also sound much better when played faster. Played slow it sounds of weird and confused but when you play it faster it'll have a cool bluesy sound to it.
I know this is a late post but I've found if you pull off to "kill" the slide right as you hit the 3rd fret it sounds a lot more correct than if you let it ring out
I’ve been watching Jim pankey beginner lessons and well I am a beginner and I think I have all the parts for cripple creek but I don’t think he ever showed how to play it or what part to play and I’m confused and need help
@@MasonCroneMusic Jim’s version of cripple creek has a little more to it but I’ll try your version and it doesn’t help me that I can read tabs but don’t want to cause I written down my own thing so I will try tomorrow ❤️
I too have been learning from Jim Pankey and honestly, he never shows the pull off in the upper part and he went from 2 to 4, not 2 to 3 so it's throwing me off. Now, my brain is like, "Wait... there's something new." 😆
Serious question. Why is your teaching on the upper slide 2-3 then a pull off? Is this the Original version? I've been playing for roughly 1 month and I have a video on my channel of me playing it slowly. Can you help me figure out what I'm doing wrong and why?
Everyone plays it slightly different, there is no set version. It's kinda that way with all of banjo music, everyone plays songs a little differently from each other.

Well thanks so much, welcome to the channel!
First banjo song I learned and you taught it to me. Always grateful

Thanks Mason I just discovered your lessons. They have been the most beneficial lessons I have found so far. Thanks a lot.
Very glad to hear that, thank you!
Great job, Mason! Your lessons never disappoint.
Thanks! Glad you like them.
I've just ordered all the bluegrass stuff to my gold tone. So i'm gonna shred this song to death. Thank you man
Have fun!
Papaw used to sing me to sleep with the original words. Which is why I learned this first.
That's cool.
Such a classic tune. Great lesson!
Thanks!
Man this video really helped ! You earned a subscriber!
Just got an Ibanez B-300. Love it.
I like how you put up the actual sheet music in the top instead of just tab becuase I read 🎼 music so it helps
What a great song! Looks like fun to learn too
Thanks! It is, you should try it😉😂
Sound mega ultra good
One of the first one I learned
Your almost to 1000 subs 👏
Yep, almost there!
Thanks from Hungary!
Whoa, you're almost to 1k subs! I hope you get there soon Mason; you deserve it. (:
Another really great tutorial my friend!
Thank you so much Kalynn, you as well!
Ahh, this was the first song that I learned!! I like the way you you put three slides together at the beginning. 😉👌 Great video Mason!!
Thanks! This seems to be the first song for a lot of people.
Could you please do a turtorial on mountain banjo from rdr2?
Real great lesson!
Thank you!

I play even more differently just because I think it sounds better 😂
when you slide 2/3, do you get the open string with it? i cant hear it in the video.

You can slow TH-cam videos in TH-cam settings
True!!
👍
Every banjo player needs to know Cripple Creek. Great video
Thanks!
Very good
Thank you!
What that your first song you learned?
No, I think I learned I'll Fly Away first 😂
im just starting to play banjo and im having a hard time with slides and im wondering how you get your sdes to sound so good
It completely comes down to lots of practice. I know that's what everyone says but it's the truth.
@@MasonCroneMusic i thought so but i just wanted to ask just incase there was some sort of special timing i was missing, thank you very much

hey! l'm wondering what camera you use??
I'm currently using my sister's Canon Rebel T6.
@@MasonCroneMusic okay, what do you think of the video quality?
I think it's pretty good. I'm satisfied with it. What do you think? My sister does have a separate lens on it to give it that blurred background look.
@@MasonCroneMusic I think it great! I might by one that’s why I’m asking.
@@DemickDayz Cool!
My favorite version of this song is the one banjo Bill Cornett played
Cool! Thank you for watching 🙂
@@MasonCroneMusic it’s a very good lesson even though I don’t pick three finger
@@easternkentuckyoutdoors8092 Thanks! You should learn!
@@MasonCroneMusic I definitely would but I’ve got a tendon issue where my middle finger doesn’t like to move fastly nor back a certain way
@@easternkentuckyoutdoors8092 Oh man, sorry to hear that.
2:44 tab replay

Can you play this on 4 string banjo(tenor banjo)
No, this arrangement is for 5 string
@@MasonCroneMusic Ok, but thank you for taking your time and answering my question🤩
How on gods name do you do the alt thumb roll so fast
Just practice. Also, if you think that's fast... Listen to Shuckin the Corn 🤣
@@MasonCroneMusic I know, it’s embarrassing how slow I am at the moment
Hi, great lesson..but that definitely ain't my 'normal' speed, not for a while yet anyhoos ! Haha !
😂 I just meant the way it's usually played haha. You'll get there!👍

If i was American i would that cap❤
Why does my 2-3 slide sound like trash? Sounds way off key to me. Are you in standard tuning?
Let up to mute it the second you slide to 3 instead of letting ring out
I like the way you play more and talk less….
only thing is I feel like it cuts off midway? Isn't there more?
There isn't, it's just how the song goes.
Bubbas packed in
for sure not capable of this
Yes you are! This is a beginner song. And the banjo is nowhere near as hard as it sounds.
