Ok here goes… I’m 74 always loved banjo music… I’ve flown airplanes from Piper Cubs to jets… I’ve been a teacher a sailor and a business owner… I played saxophone in high school band… can I learn to play a banjo in the remaining 25+ years of my life 🤔
Hello Charlie Park, I am 62 myself.. I am just learning for six weeks that I have had my first banjo.. I am into clawhammer style banjo 🪕 open back on a Recording King OT25. This is a great sounding banjo, been improving some already and I am having a blast. Keep up with practicing.. I am over here learning chords.. My right hand and left is really starting to pickup on the muscle memory.. Later on, after I get the clawhammer banjo down, I do want to learn two finger & three finger.. Have a great evening. God bless you...
I used to play bass and guitar with a focus on blending the blues with death metal into my own style and sound. But, after ten years of trying to start a band and meeting the type of people who flood the live play scene i decided to put it down and sell all my equipment. It's been about five years since then. My soul aches to play music again. The banjo seems like a good way to make myself an outlier, a way to hone my old skill with no pressure from the more mainstream people this time. Starting to get that old fire again when i think about it. I want to thank you sir for giving me something to bounce off of and showing me a few tricks. Happy trails
Thanks Mason for the lesson. As an adult beginner, it is great seeing young people interested in Bluegrass and especially the banjo. I found out about your channel from Jim Pankey, another great teacher here on TH-cam. Keep up the videos, they all help and practice and repetition are key for me.
Great! I feel like left hand position will also be a great topic for a video tutorial as beginners tend to "squeeze" the neck too much but complain about not being able to apply pressure on the strings otherwise. Where the thumb goes, where the neck rests while we apply pressure, how to stretch fingers to reach chords such as D...
I can't think of more frequently used chords in a major key. Personally if I was a begginer, after mastering those chords, I would do the (partial) A minor, as well as (partial) F major The A minor is used a lot in the slower tunes, like "you ain't goin nowhere" and "Sally Ann" and F opens the mixolydian world, like Old Joe Clark
Been playing guitar for 25 years. Just got a banjo today. The most frustrating part is getting used to the 5th string that isn't the entire length of the neck. I can't get my picking hand and fret hand to play/strum the same string if that makes sense
Thanks! Yeah, I realized that nobody really cared about the videos where I'm just playing. People like for stuff to benefit them. After I started doing more lessons I started seeing a lot more growth. I'll probably do a few playing videos here and there but I'm planning to mostly do instruction and discussion.
Thank you for video lesson. I am just getting started learning to play, and I'm trying to practice with finger picks. When you do the pinch pattern is that using finger picks? It seems a little awkward.
I play C chord with my pinky on 1st string 2nd fret because it's easier to change from C to E7 to Am and to other chords that need pinky on 1st string like D and F
@@MasonCroneMusic nope. If you're holding a C chord with your pinky on the 1st string 2nd fret, and you want to go to E7, you put your ring finger on 2nd string 2nd fret. For Am you put the ring finger on 3rd string 2nd fret. I know what I'm talking about cause I play Jed Clampett all the time. You ain't gonna be able to do it now though because you'd have to re-practice all the songs you play that have either or all of Am, C, E7 in them, to retrain your muscle memory - which I had to do a long time ago, but I only knew how to play Cripple Creek, Jed Clampett, Banjo in the Holler and Duelling Banjos. I also knew Shuckin' the Corn, which I don't play no more cause it's impossible to do it that way and it will totally erase my muscle memory if I play it the only way it can be played (in open G anyway)
I like your videos on the banjo I am just beginning to play and always liked the sound of the banjo. I am 69 years old do you think it is too late for me?

I've wanted to learn to play the banjo all my life. I'm 60 & bought me a banjo yesterday. I know nothing music. Thanks for your help Mason.
Finally got mine yesterday! My 35th birthday present from my wife ❤
Have fun!

Good idea, I'll think about it. I feel like most of that should be pretty intuitive though. 🙂
Thank you for this. It is just what I was looking for. Your teaching style is excellent.
@@sentinelperdu5133 Glad you enjoyed it!
I wish I had this channel when I was starting out. Great information, well explained, succinct

Very helpful. I'm a long time guitarist just learning the banjo. I'll try this method. Thanks
Great video. Im going to dig out my banjo now.

I’ve played guitar for years and I figured that skill would transfer over to the banjo but it’s whole different ball game but I’m learnin😂
@@jebjohn7934 You got this!
@@MasonCroneMusic thanks man I appreciate it I only just started I got plenty of time
Good teacher. Gets right to the point. Thank you Sir. Do you use light gauge strings or medium?
I want to Learn the banjo because I have a banjo it been in the family since 1920 and it just sitting there
Love your videos! Do you have a video explaining the pinch pattern you mentioned in more depth?
I don't, it's just 3 and then 5 and 1 together at the same time. Very simple 🙂
Good stuff!
Started playing banjo this week n this helped loads, respect from 🇬🇧
Awesome, have fun!

Aw thanks. My mama thinks so too
Hello Mason, can I use these chords while practicing clawhammer style. Thankyou from brother Harvey 😊✝️🇺🇸🤠
That was probably a dumb question ❓
They’re the same for clawhammer

@@RussJAlan Only problem with that is you need your pinky on the third string to play a C7. It would typically be okay though

Nope! It's never too late. Just have fun with it.
do american banjoists know of the late great george formby? as i don’t know any prolific american banjoists and i’d like some recommendations
I'm getting my first banjo tomorrow and it's going to be a gold tone composit beginners pack, do you think it will be good enough to learn on ?
Definitely!
what fingers do you use for the pinch pattern?
@@danielgarzaromusic Thumb and middle finger
I only picked up a banjo a few weeks ago I’m struggling any tips for left handed person
Just practice. It sounds simple, because it is. But it's the truth!
I,m left handed, but I play right handed . Took a while, new to banjo . Good luck
I've owned and have been picking banjo for a while, but still feel like I'm a beginner. Do you offer lessons?
I used to but there were technical difficulties and they never worked out too well. Try the TH-cam tutorials! You can learn a lot from those 😃
I think that Scruggs D would be a D suspended 9th on guitar.😎
Should I learn music theory prior to learning banjo?
Not necessarily, most people don't.
Hey. Mason. Did. Jim pankey. Teach you. The banjo. Ive learned a lot from him. My self. A good teacher. You do the. Same. And i think. You will😊
He didn't, I learned from a book. He's a great teacher though!
Can you play these chords on a five string banjo?
Yes, I'm playing a 5 string.
Really like your pickin son
Thanks 😄
Thanks guy, could u talk a little slower !!
Nah
I want you to make a video where it goes doh doh doh dah dah dih dih, I can’t express it without actually making it sound stupid
