You didn't mention the type of material used for both poles. Usually fishing rods are made of carbon fibre, which will influence any wire that runs along it. The Spiderbeam pole is made of fibre glass, which doesn't have any electrical of magnetic properties.
Both poles can be used to make effective GP antenna for 7 MHz. Vertical monopole can be only 7m long, with top 3m sloping away. Current at the tip is so small, top 1/3 of monopole does very little for Far Field.
I will order a 12M SpiderBeam to support 40M and 80M EFHW wires in different temporary configs at the QTH and Portable Ops as soon as I finish my coffee. Always enjoy your vids. 73 OM.
Thank you for another informative and motivational video. I could use a longer view / narrative of the content beginning around 4:02. I have a 10 meter telescoping Fiberglas mast that has sections approximately 2 meters tall. I add a sling to the bottom section when I need to carry it any distance to the deployment site. Without also carrying a step stool or ladder, the only practical way to raise this mast to extend it horizontally on the ground and employ guys as I learned from Richard (Sota Beams) TH-cam video.
Bill - I kept it short on the basis that if viewers need a longer look they can use the pause button. It's basically using some tubing with holes in the end to take the wire and slipping over the pole's end. Didn't realise there were 2m tall poles. I've tended to avoid guys where possible.
Great comparison Peyer. Every extra kilogram hurts when climbing up a SOTA peak. For that reason I will stay with my Haverford pole, damaged end and all. Very interesting comment below about the material not being inert to RF. How could we test that?
Paul - haven't tried this but how about a free running VFO with an SSB receiver next to it to receive a carrier. If the VFO changes in frequency when the pole is moved next to it then the pole has some RF characteristics.

As the owner of an old 9m squid pole (actually 8.5m as the top section broke), I was wondering what the pros and cons were in replacing it with the longer, sturdier, but more expensive Spiderbeam pole. It's good but I suggest you try lifting mine before splashing out. Or investigate a long narrow shoulder bag for it if you plan to carry it more than 500 - 600m. However it could be the basis for an excellent 160m portable antenna especially if you can make weight economies in the battery and transceiver department to allow the pole and loading coil to be manageable. I bought the last one from the local agent yesterday. But when they do restock you'll find they're only a short walk from the Tyabb packing house, railway station, buses etc. Or you can order online - either through them or Spiderbeam direct.
great video as always peter. at 4:41 i could see that ending badly. Crossing a road and all of a sudden the pole extends to its full 12 metres... i will have to buy myself a squid pole. i can only find the 6 metre long ones. did you find yours on ebay?
Would you have any recommendations for using the Spiderbeam pole for elevated photography? Ive been looking around for a long, extendable and strong pole for low level aerial photography. Though my camera weighs over 630 grams so obviously, I wouldn't be able to attach it to the top of the Spiderbeam pole as the top section looks way too thin to support the weight. I wonder how much usable length I could get out of the pole for a camera of this weight. In other words - how far up I could mount the camera and still be relatively safe. In a number of videos Ive seen, it looks like the Spiderbeam pole leans over a fair bit rather than standing up straight and this could be a negative for elevated photography.
@@forgetyourlife Thank you and sorry, I didn't see your comment until now. 30 feet is really impressive. Unfortunately, Ive just wasted money buying a 9 meter cleaning pole for elevated photography. This particular pole is meant to support 3kg but the top section is incredibly loose and wobbly and I wouldn't feel confident about putting expensive camera gear up there. And there doesn't seem to be any way of locking the middle section in place (it just slides along.) I think I'll have to send it back for a refund and get a Spiderbeam pole instead.

I've owned a squid pole and it's pretty flimsy and it limits quite a bit what you can do. I reckon the Spiderbeam pole would enable far more experiments to be performed. You could also not use all the sections if you don't need the height but want rigidity
You can save a bit by ordering directly from Spiderbeam. I got one with the eyelet already installed in the top section and I will say that is a huge convenience. I am currently using the pole for putting up a 40 meter EFHW in the backyard and it is great.

Sorry I wouldn't know. Though some new cameras have fairly clever anti-shake mechanisms.
i’m guessing you could mount it at 30 feet and get good results. it’s way more rigid than the cheap poles.

Why pay 4 times more for the Spider Beam?? As soon as the word "HAM" Comes into play you pay triple.
