  • What do you do when you're setup spot has no trees? How do you support your telescoping mast? Well, in this video I show you a quick, easy and effective way to support your telescoping mast. Inspired by a video I saw from Tracy, VE3TWM, I borrowed the idea to make something that would work for me, then show it using a DX Commander mast and TennTennas 49:1 EFHW antenna.
Here is the link to Tracy's video where i got this idea: • The Fastest and Easies...

Love this vid,,,I'm a surf fisherman,,,and we use pvc, as sand spikes, for our rods, at the beach,,,if you cut the bottom, of the pvc, at a 45 degree angle, you can pound it, into most any ground,,,and the insert the telescoping pole,,,pound a 5 foot section deep enough, and probably won't need guying,,,,excellent vid,,,thanks for posting,,,LOVE field day, and POTA, SOTA, etc,,,,de NV1H😎

    Great video.
You can also use a 2' length of ABS which is stronger than pvc with a 45deg or sharper slice at the bottom. Then slip a 3in to 2in hub with a 2' section of 3in ABS int that 2in piece that you pounded into the ground. Just another idea for you.

Genius! I like that your mast has a loop at the end. Easy to pull out from the rest of the mast parts.

I'm watching the video and I am saying to myself that I would need a PVC pipe with a large diameter because of the rubber cap I had to put at the bottom of my mast when the original cap broke. Then you mentioned shoving the mast up through the bottom of the PVC. DUH! Ten years of doing it the hard way. Thank you. I will try this out tomorrow morning.

This is too funny! I had to apply that exact fix to my DX Commander 10 Meter pole, so I had the exact same thought. When he ran that up from the bottom I was sitting there in awe! Yup, I'll be doing this also.

Slice the pipe vertically about 6”. Then Pound it into the ground. Makes your base more stable & Your guy wires won’t have to carry the whole load.

Thanks for the video. I have a TH-cam short coming out later today that shows my version after you have led the way. I hope that you will make more videos I really like your content and style. Thanks for the help. 73s.

Great video idea with the PVC Mast holder! I'm gonna give it a try! My setup for Portable Op. is very similar using a TennTennas EFHW & a Jackite 31' fiberglass mast. I feel the Tenntennas EFHW is the best deal in town & works very well for me!

Cool idea with the PVC. I use the same cam locks. I’ve broken my Spiderbeam mast doing what you did though. It just can’t handle any tension on those upper sections.

Add a 1' tee at the bottom with 2 holes and pike it to the ground. Don't glue together, however.

Question, where did you get the wire clip to hold the antenna? Great video by the way.....

You can make one from a paint stick or something.

How long was that dx commander pole? Where do you get the top wire holder? Thanks for sharing

Great video! Have you ever had the pole kick out for any reason or does it stay put no matter what kind of wind or weight be on the pole?

@@_NeuroTech_ I recently activated a park using the same type of setup, and after guying the pvc as shown, the 30 foot mast with a small wire EFHW fell flat. Even though it was guyed, the grass must’ve been too tall, and it slipped. The guying is what kept the mast from falling on our car and us. We didn’t have a level piece of ground with short grass as in the video.

I'll have to try those carabiners. I've been having good luck with arrowhead hitches for adjustment. The wire end terminator looks good too.
I wonder how long it will take those drilled holes to eat through the paracord. I presume that you knocked off any sharp edges with a round file.
If you got that pole as part of a DX commander antenna, you might get away with using the lowest guy plate directly on the pole, and not have to haul the PVC pipe along. (You may or may not need the hose clamp, I don't think that plate will slip over the bottom section. But you shouldn't have to tighten it.) But the pipe is good for other brands of pole, or a squid pole, etc.
I step the pole on the head of a tent stake so that it can't slip out from under the guys. If the soil is hard, you may not get the nice friction that shows in the video. The DX commander pole bottom cap has a center press fit plug that you can push out (and save to put back in when you take the antenna down).
Using the upper guy plate and more paracord could help with the amount of bend, particularly if you want to raise a heavier antenna.
