SOTA/Wire Antenna Portable Telescopic Pole Setup

This one's for you, Bill. Here's a quick video that shows how I set up my telescopic Jackite pole using three stakes and guylines. It's nothing fancy, but it works. 73, KJ6HOT (soon to be K6ARK).

Very cool. If it comes out cattywompus, you can just move the bottom of the pole instead of adjusting all the lines.

I have been looking for videos that show me how to secure a pole / mast on a lawn. Your video shows me some ways but did not show how to secure the ropes on the lawn.

One final note I forgot to mention - I recommend having a Velcro strap to hold the "Figure 9" devices snug against the pole while in transit. Those thing are like grappling hooks and seem to reach out and grab every branch, bush, or shrub you walk by as the pole is strapped to your pack. They also make quite a racket knocking against the fiberglass pole. I'll bet you could accomplish the same thing with a short piece of cord if you don't have Velcro handy.

multitasking... put a wet sock over the end... no more snags and a dry sock ;) rotate socks when you take a gorp/water break to get a pair dry.

Cool. I have a ring with holes on mine but I like this better. The fishing loop on the end is a nice touch. Appropriate shirt. So what is the kinetic energy of the matching unit mounted at the top when fully extended when it falls over (not dropped).

Get a paint roller from the dollar store. Has a pole fitting on the handle. Remove the roller hardware and bend over the rod into a hook. Hang a pulley and rope on the hook. Now you can raise and lower the balun feed point.

Thanks, Adam. I'm working on a homemade dude commander 🤣. I found this video while searching for jackite. What was your opinion of this Pole? I was looking for a 31ft pole and this keeps popping up.

I have two 31 footers. Great poles! They are a bit heavy for SOTA but very durable. I have had the 21 footer for so long that the orange has faded, and it's STILL ready to rock and roll on summits. If conditions are going to suck, I bring the Jackite poles because I know they can handle it.

I have two 31 footers to set up a Half Square antenna, and the old one in the video is a 20(ish) footer. Bigger is, of course, heavier. I also have some ultralight 10-12 foot models that collapse very small for ultralight Backcountry activations.

That is a neat idea!! I have some of the Nite-Ize CamJam clips that would do the same thing as the "Figure 9" connectors you have. Same idea, you don't have to tie a knot every time.

I'm actually going to do this with my SOTABeams masts. I've got the HD "tactical" ones (regular & mini). I'm going to use Gorilla super glue gel and Gorilla or T-Rex tape to affix the loops to the mast and then use heavy-duty zip ties to really secure it.

Update 2023. The loops on my masts work GREAT! I can get my mast and antenna all set up within minutes. Less setup means more operating time. 😊
