I've been crocheting for decades, made thousands of things, and you know what? I just got significantly faster within a day of watching this video. Thank you so much! Best wishes with everything!
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED!!! Omg I have struggling finishing projects in weeks when it really should only take me days, and I would never guess that the way I hold my needle and yarn could make a difference. Thank you so much for this, you’ve saved me from my crocheting woes!
I started with the knife grip. After two years crocheting, my fingers holding the hook discovered how to do the action the wrist was doing. So now I want to see if I can go even faster with the pencil grip. Even if not, it's better to have multiple options to avoid fatigue. Initially it does not feel natural to hold it like a pen. I feel like I'm almost starting over. This video is just what I need. Update: After three days, both grips feel natural. I switch back and forth, but I'm still faster and more consistent with knife grip. At this point knife grip has fatigued some of my joints to the point that I have to have an alternative or else take several days off to recover. Using the pen grip allows me to keep going.
I have been loving your videos for awhile. I'm so glad that you faced your fear. Your videos are not just great teaching tools, they are entertaining and uplifting. I know they are alot of work. I just hope that they are also fun for you and your husband to make as they seem.
You are the only crocheter I've ever seen hold their hook the way I do, and it doesn't slow you down at all. I was told it looked like I am doing it backward by my Aunt Ruth over 56 years ago. Needless to say, I put the hook down. In my old age, sickness tethers me to the house, and crochet is back in my life. I am a new sub. I hope you have lots and lots of videos to watch. I should be an expert at my age... but I'm just a beginner with perfection and OCD issues, LOL. Great video.

this is great! I've originally been using the knife grip but recently my ring finger has been starting to hurt but this hold lets me relax my ring finger so my hand doesn't hurt anymore, I've also only been crocheting for about a month or two and have only been working on small projects and have recently finally started to crochet a scarf and have been looking for a way to crochet faster and this really helps. I now learnt to switch between the two grips depending on my mood and hand condition (of course I make sure to take rests lol). thanks for the video!
i came here to see if i could crochet faster than i do, and i thought i was gonna find new tips but i’m glad i’m already doing everything said in the video!!
Thanks for such a wonderful tutorial Chandi! I broke down what you did in the video and reconstructed my technique to be much faster. I discovered in my sc that I was doing the first yarn over in the opposite direction to the 2nd one - changing this to be 2 in the same direction has really helped speed it up, also making my tension looser so that the yarn slides easily and not holding on to the work with my hook hand. The little tilt of the hook at the end of each stitch is important to quickly get the off the hook and how you ‘flick’ the handle away from you during this movement. Have a wonderful day ❤
I can "blame" my dad for the way I hold my yarn and hook since he's the one who taught me how to crochet over 50 years ago. His mom taught him along with all his siblings, and then most of my cousins. Grandma had taught many of us to knit as well, so we all knew when visiting her there would be plenty of yarn, hooks, and needles to keep our hands busy while we sat and talked.
I bet those are some of the best memories you have! I still miss my Grandma 27 years after she passed. I'm trying to give those kinds of memories to my Grandkids now. Happy stitching
Wow. What an absolute pleasure that was to watch. You are just a gorgeous teacher/presenter/explainer/person. Ive Just this min watched u, my first ever video/tutorial on crocheting. I bin crocheting since I taught myself at about 8 years old. My Mom always knitted. I tried and tried 2 knit but didn't take 2 it - I think it was 2 slow to grow for me as a child. So I took a kiddies crochet stitch book and just did what it said in the book. I held the yarn and the hook it what ever way felt comfy and I have done this- growing my knowledge of stitches - for, all my life ( on and off) about fifty something years. Watching you crochet was a real delight. U were not only knowledgeable but so easy and amusing to listen to. The bit at the end was hysterical. Since my junior school days I dont recall crocheting with or watching any body else crochet and its amazing how much I loved it. It feels better for my hand, personally. I have ergonomic crochet hooks, so I can't hold it exactly like you do, but I'm learning to hold mine like that. I've been crocheting for 10 years now, and I'm currently making a BIG granny square blanket with my leftover small balls of yarn, and this tutorial is just so helpful, thank you :)
Hi Chandi🙋 Lol... My friend watched this video and said, "Look at how she wiggles that stick around and comes out with a tiny doll baby scarf! I want to learn how to do that!" .😅😅 Ahh the magic of crochet🤗 Thank you for sharing those tips. I, however, hold my hook like a knife (in my right hand) & rotate it with my thumb & index finger. I LOVE to crochet & thanks to you & Marly Bird my knitting skills have improved immensely 🤗
Great video! I am going to try holding my hook the way you do. I feel like I am moving my wrists way too much! Love the bloopers at the end. Have a great weekend!
Great tips for pencil holders. I’m a knife holder and have been for years. When I try and do it your way I just can’t! It’s so funny to watch me struggle. Have a lovely weekend. It’s snowing here today in Massachusetts! Hopefully it will stop soon! 💗💗

Then with a little adjustment in holding the hook and wrapping the yarn, I can crochet significantly faster and easier, thanks to you! The motion also looks cooler tbh, haha. AND I happen to love the sparkly, ombre nail polish you're sporting in the video. Sparkles and blue ombre and a gorgeous shawl to crochet! AWESOME!!!
I love that your Colorstreet nails match your yarn!!! You gave us good tips for going fast. I can stitch very fast with a plain metal hook if I hold it in a pencil grip. If I switch to any ergonimic hook with a built up handle it seems impossible to hold it in anything but a knife grip.
@@ExpressionFiberArts it really was! It doesn’t matter how much you enjoy your projects, if they get tedious and you don’t see the piece working up very quickly it can take the fun out of it! :)

I'm so impressed by your technique Chandi! They are so smooth and fast for sure,... I was a knife holder for 5 years then decided to force myself learn how to hold my hook like a pencil. I am a pencil holder now, well, most of the time, depending on what tyoe of yarn I use or hook size, I sometimes resort back to a knife hold as well, it's been almost 2 years since I switched to the pencil hold. I must say, the pencil hold does require less motion on the wrist and definitely faster.
Taught myself crochet to make amigurumis, finishing one in a day was no problem, after moving onto clothing or blankets I feel defeated from the amount of time it takes. Saw people on Instagram crocheting like this and was wondering why they hold the hook so differently, I'll be giving these tips a try, thank you
I was taught to crochet this same way. My fave hook is also the same! Love your ombré nails and how they match the yarn you’re using. Love your sweet, fun, always uplifting spirit. Always look forward to your videos ☺️
Those are great tips! I’m proud to say that short of weaving in some yarn I completed my first KNITTED pattern this week. I made some minor mistakes along the way, but I accept them as learning opportunities.
I'm currently teaching my housemate to crochet and Im getting frustrated with how they hold their hook and how much movement they put in their wrist, I'm like "you're gonna get carpal tunnel if you keep that up" So it's nice to see someone show a really good hook posture, it's actually pretty much the same as mine, except I hold it like a knife, not a pen. But yeah, I find hook down the whole time is best
You are adorable 🥰 what a great video! I loved the quick smooth one action of crocheting instead of a chopped up action. Fantastic points. Thank you ☺️
Thanks Chandi for another great video w/great tips & laughter therapy!! We've been following you for years & have always appreciated you & your crew. Got us thru some tough times w/your positive attitude & you sharing your own experiences. You're so appreciated!!🤗 My Grandma taught me when I was 7 w/knife hold. I didn't realize till years later that there was different ways to hold your hook 🤔 Tried the different versions but always get pulled away to complete projects quickly & it's always been my destress therapy too 🥰 Watched the video the day it came out but wanted to try your tips before commenting. So hard to train myself differently 😬 Will keep trying whenever I get the chance. Would be nice to be able to be versed w/the different versions.
I really appreciate your thoughtful comment. I agree, it is nice to learn different versions of doing things. I appreciate you! Have a fabulous week! 💕💕
very cool technique! i only started crochet in january 21 so im a newbie but already hardly addicted. i did 3 xxxl scarfs that are 3,30m each, about 15 amigurumis and im halfway done with a huge blue toned patchwork blanket so far-i do it on a daily basis since i started, its such a nice hobby and i always searched fot slmething like this that actually gives me joy and helps calming my thoughts down. i will definately try the technique you show here, but i first need different hooks cause mine have an ergonomic handle and that dont feel comfortable that way
I can hold hook both ways, but since I now have rheumatoid arthritis, I find knife grip is easier. Hold yarn like you, I feel it gives the best tension too. I also knit..right hand throw, can't get my head wrapped around continental. I did watch Portuguese knitting, and that intrigues me.
I have mild carpel tunnel, tendentious, and major tennis elbow. Portuguese knitting has been a nerve saver. I found it easy to do but I do both throw and pick (i learned to for color work). I really encourage you to try, so much easier on the joints. Good luck!!
I’m going to have to practice the pencil hold. I’m left handed but I crochet right handed so I use the knife hold because the pencil feels weird but I need to learn to crochet faster when designing so I can get patterns out while also working full time as a RN. Thank you for the video!
Did a little swatch trying the pencil hold and I must be doing something wrong because it’s hurting down my thumb 😂 I like the way it feels tho. I think it’s because I can’t catch the yarn easily on the second yarn over so I end up twisting my thumb and hand all weird. I’m gonna keep practicing tho. Thanks for the tutorial!!
@@ExpressionFiberArts I want you to know that I am blind and you explained what you were doing so well I was able to follow along. That's rare from a sighted person whom I assume had to training in that.
Thank you soooooo. much for your videos. I have followed your videos, so inspiring with beautifully knitted shawls and scarves. Keep up your good work.
Slide and smooth easily, lol. Love your vids and this is great as I’ve just been wondering how to crochet faster. Thanks for the tip on the shorter neck hooks; if I decide to buy more, I’ll look out for those Susan Bates’. Have a great day!
This is a super helpful and informative video! I was able to try it out and it does feel nice and fluid ; a bit awkward at first but it does eventually start to flow. I'm a bit bummed out that I can't use the pencil grip more! Unfortunately due to the type and location of my chronic wrist pain the pencil grip is pretty painful. This vid was still super helpful!
I ham fist my hook and twist it with the flat piece but most of my work is done with my tension hand and working yarn. And I’m farely fast. Trying this way I can’t even get my hook around the yarn lol 😂 like literally have to climb a mountain to get my hook anywhere near the working yarn. I think I’m gonna have to practice, although I have very short fingers so it might not work for me. Thank you for the detailed explanation and happy hooking my fellow speed freaks.
Oh boy, I sure need this technique as I have so many projects I'm working on right now.😍❤❤❤ I'm going to practice, practice and more practice till I get it down.😊 I wish you and Tim well. XOXOXOX
NGL, been doing these for decades unconsciously. I usually do the pen grip for smaller hook sizes and the knife grip for larger hook sizes. And yep, this really speeds up your crocheting. I still struggle with the very first row up to this day. The same issue with knitting, but I'm okay with it.
I am so glad I found someone who crochets like I was taught. Do you also turn your work counter-clockwise so your side has thw vee part of the stitch on the edge so it is easier to crochet as though you are crocheting on the row? I find it so difficult to crochet in the back bar when doing my edge if I turn clockeise.

Congrats! 🎈 🎉 🎊 🍾 💕 That is awesome!
You are the first person I’ve seen using the exact same method of holding hook and yarn, as I do. No wonder I’m speedy 😀
Same!
I'm currently teaching my housemate to crochet and Im getting frustrated with how they hold their hook and how much movement they put in their wrist, I'm like "you're gonna get carpal tunnel if you keep that up"
So it's nice to see someone show a really good hook posture, it's actually pretty much the same as mine, except I hold it like a knife, not a pen. But yeah, I find hook down the whole time is best
Working on the Boho shawl right now. LOVE THIS PATTERN. Thank you so much for all you do!
I'm so glad you love it!
@@ExpressionFiberArts I just finished it today! I tagged you on instagram
@@thewoolverine4420 I'm so excited to see it!
I love your outfit and hair cut so much i might take a screenshot for the hair dresser :]
Thank you, so nice to see someone hold the hooks and crochet the same as me. I feel so unco just watching crocheting with the knife grip.
Ok, I'm positively surprised. I've just realized that I've been speed crocheting all the time. Lol
This is how I crochet! So many people use the knife hold, which seems so awkward to me. Finally I get to see someone doing it like me. 💜
That was ridiculously enjoyable to watch. I am actually in a better mood just for watching this.
I love that you show bloopers at the end.
Thank you!
You are adorable 🥰 what a great video! I loved the quick smooth one action of crocheting instead of a chopped up action. Fantastic points. Thank you ☺️
Thank you so much!
Maybe I can do this. Who knew? I have tried to crotchet before and never could get it. You make it seem easy!
you've got this!
Thanks Chandi for another great video w/great tips & laughter therapy!! We've been following you for years & have always appreciated you & your crew. Got us thru some tough times w/your positive attitude & you sharing your own experiences. You're so appreciated!!🤗
My Grandma taught me when I was 7 w/knife hold.
Good tips for crocheting faster! Your outtakes were the best!
Glad it was helpful!
very cool technique! i only started crochet in january 21 so im a newbie but already hardly addicted. i did 3 xxxl scarfs that are 3,30m each, about 15 amigurumis and im halfway done with a huge blue toned patchwork blanket so far-i do it on a daily basis since i started, its such a nice hobby and i always searched fot slmething like this that actually gives me joy and helps calming my thoughts down. i will definately try the technique you show here, but i first need different hooks cause mine have an ergonomic handle and that dont feel comfortable that way
I can hold hook both ways, but since I now have rheumatoid arthritis, I find knife grip is easier.
Good luck!!
Another great tutorial! Thanks Chandi and Tim and all the expressions crew!
Thank you so much! We appreciate you!
Wow thanks for the great tip on how to crochet faster, will be trying this method on my next projects!
You are so welcome! Let me know how it goes. 💕
Just keep practicing! Glad you found it helpful!
You two are so awesome! I love to watch your videos. I can't wait to apply your tips to my project.
Yay! Thank you! 😊
Thank you! This was really helpful and the little practice I did while watching is already making me faster
That's great! 😀
@@ExpressionFiberArts I want you to know that I am blind and you explained what you were doing so well I was able to follow along. That's rare from a sighted person whom I assume had to training in that.
@@thryssinstitches9655 That's fantastic! I sometimes feel like the explanations aren't clear enough. I am so glad that it was helpful for you. 💕
Thank you soooooo. much for your videos. I have followed your videos, so inspiring with beautifully knitted shawls and scarves. Keep up your good work.
Thank you so much!
So off topic, but I love how your nail polish usually matches the yarn you're using!🤭
Oh thank you!
Slide and smooth easily, lol. Love your vids and this is great as I’ve just been wondering how to crochet faster. Thanks for the tip on the shorter neck hooks; if I decide to buy more, I’ll look out for those Susan Bates’. Have a great day!
Awesome! You have a fabulous day as well!
Glad it was helpful!
What really helped me to speed up, was switching from tapered to inline hooks.
Thanks, great tutorial. 👍 But boy oh boy, you really are fast ⏱ I have a great giggle with you at your out-takes. 🤣😂
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the bloopers! 💕

I'm making hand warmers for my mom and I need it done before Christmas
Wonderful, I hope she loves them! 💕
Thanks! I'm trying to finish a gift on a deadline!
Should this work for amigurumi
I hold my hook like a knife and loop over all the time
I even twist my yarn over my non dominant index finger 🙈
Hija mía... Eres genial, no entiendo el inglés pero solo con tus imágenes...lo he entendido. Gracias gracias
💕💕
Oh boy, I sure need this technique as I have so many projects I'm working on right now.😍❤❤❤ I'm going to practice, practice and more practice till I get it down.😊 I wish you and Tim well. XOXOXOX
😘😘💕💕
Cool video!! I love to crochet and knit💗💗
Thank you! 😊
I really like this tutorial... Very useful. Thanks. Have a nice day.
Thank you! Have an amazing day!
Woah!! I thought for sure you had sped up that shot at the beginning... nope. You're just super fast!
Very helpful!! I find I make some unnecessary moves when I crochet that I wasn’t aware of. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this tutorial! I'm going to give it a go tonight 😊
Have fun! 🤩
Thank you for the tips!
Always fun, always classy! Thank you
Our pleasure!
your smile is BEAUTIFUL!!
Aww, thank you! ❤️
Omg you’re the person who thought me to knit! I knows I recognised you in the thumbnail
That's fantastic and makes me so happy to hear!
NGL, been doing these for decades unconsciously. I usually do the pen grip for smaller hook sizes and the knife grip for larger hook sizes. And yep, this really speeds up your crocheting. I still struggle with the very first row up to this day. The same issue with knitting, but I'm okay with it.
Yay!!! Thank you very much for this video.
You are so welcome!
THANK YOU!! my school is hosting a market thing in about a month so I want to crochet things quickly so i have stuff ready to sell by then :D
You got this! 💖
@@ExpressionFiberArts Thank you!! So far I'm working on one amigurumi a day, and I'm also working on a scarf along with it to sell
Thanks I will try this. I am working on the Dreamscape sweater... it is a lot of single crocheting.
Wonderful!
Wandas, hurray! Yes, sometimes - it just depends on the pattern!
With one hand that does not work for me. I don’t think I will ever be very fast but your video gave me some ideas to try thank you.
You’re welcome 😊
I wish I had that color and size yarn (from Dollartree) for a beanie I want to make to match a sweater I have.
Hi Sharlene, thank you for your message.
Have you checked our website if we have a yarn and a color that would match your sweater? Here is the link to it: www.expressionfiberarts.com/
I just got 2 rolls of a nice rust colour that will match one of my shirts perfectly.Going to time how long it takes me to make a beanie.
@@ExpressionFiberArts I haven't.I am just looking for something inexpensive at a dollar store..Goodwill will do..
Thanks for the tips! 💗😎 I love your dress! It looks super comfy! Would love to know where you got it!😎
