I think that’s why Captain Titus from Space Marine is so widely liked. He saw the Codex Astartes as more of a guideline, but these beliefs, along with his mysterious anti chaos powers, got him in trouble with some of his brothers and the inquisition. I’m hoping that Space Marine 2 follows this up, showing some tension in the Ultramarines where some cling rigidly to the Codex while others want to reinterpret (or even rewrite) it for the new era. Would make sense since the main enemy seems to be the Tyrannids, and they can include debates between the UM over how to integrate the lessons of Macragge into the codex.
Too bad that it’s not Canon with the main lore though. Would love too see SM 2 integrate the series into the main timeline, like they did with the DOW games

About the codex astartes being predictable: I love how in the book farsight: crisis of faith the tau fight a chapter of space marines that follow the codex almost completely and farsight writes an entire goddamn book about it and how to beat space marines using these tactics (the mirrorcodex). After that the space marines start losing pretty hard. Its like a perfect show of the shortcomings that space marines can have and the reason why the tau arent actually that easy to wipe out

Guilliman is already in the process of reforming the Imperium and updating the chapter structure of the Space Marines. He also seems very much open to new approaches. So relying on the uniformity of the Space Marines might not be a great approach for the Tau going forwards. Certainly so if Guilliman turns his attention to them specifically.

He tells Dante to essentially lift up the common man because 'How can we possibly hope to tell our people to avoid the evils of the Warp when they are an already living in Hell.' Man that is it, Guilliman gets it, and he truly wants to make the Imperium better. Good shit.

In fact this set of skils realy make them most usefull space marines in great "Imperium" scale of things. As recent lore show us(after Great Rift open) its not enough to win in one battle - you need to achive victory in war and for this you need to be a great ruler(you need an army of effective governors so your army's would be massive and well suppley, so your citizens live +\- good lvl of life which protect planet from danger of uprising, etc)
      .
Guiliman was able to save Imperium twice in most darkest situation, not because he could kick some nasty ass, but because he is a God lvl politic and ruler (empiere builder)

Agreed man. I got into the hobby in March, and the amount of "rObOt GiRlYmAn hardy harr harr" gets old. Like haha yeah its a funny name, I thought his name was Robert Guilliman when I started. I thought "Roboute" was odd.
But I genuinely like the chapter, Roman influences and blue and gold are sick. And if I hear "the smurfs?!" when I'm playing I dismiss the person since I wouldn't talk down on a project that they spent time building and painting and learning, especially if it's the first words out of their mouths to me. Jokes between buddies are fine, "Robot Girlyman" said the Blood Angels player. "Sanguinius".
Right? But if some weirdo comes up while I'm just watching my models I made do stuff and they talk down on something I did, they can go pound sand.

When I first started 40K, I wanted to play Ultramarines because I loved the color scheme. Then I discovered two things; people held the smurfs in the same vitriolic contempt they held Smurf players in, and Space Wolves were literally vikings in space. The Wolves were a joy to paint and fun to read about, but I only lost two games with them over as many years. For context, I played three games almost every week. It got kinda depressing showing up to the club, knowing with certainty that I would table the enemy or induce rage quits. I think if I had stuck with the Ultramarines idea, I would have had a much more interesting W/L ratio due to having fewer options to carve through everything in melee.

I'd make the argument that it was the Uriel Ventris saga that redeemed the Ultramarines. You had a story arc where he's wildly successful BECAUSE he flips off the codex. They jail him, and he's given advice by a veteran to get taken to a place on Macragge literally designed FOR executions. Metal. There, he's basically like "yeah, either you let me keep doing this, or use that power sword that's always been on your model but is never used." And Marneus exiles him and his second in command. They go have some adventures, come back to Macragge as heroes, and Guilliman himself is like "hey dude, you don't have to apologise to me for anything, you did more than Cato has, in less time"

One of the reasons people hate the Ultramarines is because people tend to linger on serious issues associated with anything even if the issue has long been solved, which ironically makes the situation worse since they refuse to keep to their initial thoughts. I mean, for example, the hate for the Tau is mostly overblown so much that it distorts the actual army both in-game and in the lore, ok the lore part is a bit of a stretch, Tau lore is pretty bland and boring besides the Farsight Enclaves, and even then it's like been 3 years since there was a good story about them, but still people just don't want to change and keep pushing an old narrative which is mostly not true.

I am old enough to remember the travesty that was the very first Ultramarine codex in 2nd edition, written by Matt Ward (who deserves his own special place in hell).
It was this cidex that established
    1) The Ultramarines are what other chapters aspire to be.
    2) RG is everyone's spiritual leige... including the sons of other primarchs.
    3) The Ultramarines have 500 worlds where every other chapter gets 1.
    4) Over half of all space marines are descendants of the Ultramarines.
    5) The Ultramarines were by far the most successful legion in the great crusade.
    6) They had the best strategist in the game.....
    7) .... as well as the best psyker.
Basically Matt Ward blew his load and we never forgave him for it.

I’ve always like Ultramarines. I painted them as my first minis a year ago and wanted to play them but I legit sort of got unofficially bullied out from playing them because of the community back lash toward them as a chapter. But if anything that gave me the chance to explore and not be complacent with what was on the box and how I found that there even WERE other chapters. I wanted to play raven guard for a while, the blood angels, until finally choosing dark angels

For me it's just the fact that it seems the ultramarines get all the focus. There's no other space marine chapter out there getting their share of the spotlight. There's hundreds of chapters out there that are far more interesting than just a bunch of guys in blue armor who keep rolling nat 20's because Matt Ward says so.
I like the faction, I like their primarch, but I despise the way they're written.

I love my Ultras! I love the Roman feel - the fact that they aren't "special" (space vampire, or space werewolf etc) and I do love seeing them on everything - HOWEVER.... i also understand the hate at seeing all the blue. I do wish GW would maybe use other chapters for box art on occasion. I also think it didnt hurt that the Ultras got some REALLY good horus heresy books - and even the dark imperium books - as far as modern fluff goes it helps explain them better than codex fluff.

I blame 5th ED. It's the true source of why people still hate Ultramarines. Older editions weren't so saturated with Ultrawank.

Exactly! People hate the ultramarines for being so perfect, but fail to recognize that it was the fanboy who wrote their fluff whose truly responsible for it.

@@GearShotgun Yeah. In older edition while the whole GREATEST AMONG THEM ALL was present, it wasn't this much of an issue because despite the Ultrawank, they were actually cool (not to mention the Greco-Roman theme of theirs added to their coolness). Then came Matt Ward and ramped the Ultrawank to unbearable levels. The moment I read the 5th ED I thought my eyes would bleed tears of blood.
