People who a just learning to paint are scared of oils as a medium, if they've never used them, but the irony is it's soo much more forgiving and satisfying to apply.... I learnt with Goache, but only ever use it now if a commission requires that 'look' , i'll always default to oils now.
This is such a great technique. This whole time I have been painting with oils from the start of the painting to the final details. Most of the time I get stressed from the drying time and I don't have fun. Thank you for sharing this technique - it's so helpful. I will definitely use it 😊.
I absolutely love this!! I have been doing portraits using this technique for the past few years for the very same reason. I always work in acrylic as well but have recently begun oils over acrylic and acrylic over water color. It is such a fun way to challenge what you think you know by trying what you have no idea about! 😉👍 Beautiful buck!!❤️
I love both oils and acrylics. I can never combine the both in one painting though. for me its a weird mental thing where Im all one or all the other lol, although I have in the past on the odd painting. Ive always worked predominantly in oils and most of that time working alla prima, which transfers over to acrylics in that I can blend pretty fast before the paints have time to dry on some layers if I need to (each painting tends to be a combination of many techniques) I find with acrylics I can be more free and spontanous as can paint over elements and change things on the fly, but then ironically having said that they also require alot more planning at times. Oils seem far more forgiving to use in comparison and dont require as much time/planning as per slow drying, but then you also have to deal with fat over lean or oiling out or issues with drying times on odd occasion
Have you ever tried water soluble oils? I used to be a oil paint hater because of the dry time and the extensive clean up process, but I tried water soluble oils and they work just like oils, but you can water them down, and clean with soap and water
I agree with you and find oil paints are so easy to blend, and get that beautiful transition between colours. Acrylics must be applied thin for oils over the top, as thick acrylic will crack and destroy all your work. Great job on your deer very well done.
Hello, thanks for this posting. I do love both media and have just started this technique; you have articulated here why we do it! I need much more practice but I keep on plugging!
I think this just answered my question that I had for so long about wether to learn this or that! Spectially as a beginner it's confusing to read about all the pros and cons of each one and then still feeling confused lol now I know I can proceed with learning acrylic while having this option to add oil colors on top! i.e I don't have to choose between them :)
I love watching your videos! I started out many yrs. ago painting in oils having watched the artist on TV. Some time in the 90s I decided to try acrylics because they were water based. What a struggle! I was determined to get my acrylics to blend like oils.. Today I have to make sure I note on the back of the of the canvas if the final painting is oils because even I can't tell the difference. I tried the water mixable oil paints when they first came out, but was not happy with them. I am now trying them again with better results. Thank you for sharing your incredible videos.
Your paintings are beautiful. I do have a question though. Being that acrylics are plastic based, wouldn't the oil eventually begin to peel away from the acrylic? Especially if there's any kind of temperature or moisture changes? Just wondering about the longevity.
I like working with this same oil over acrylic process. My problem is knowing when to stop fiddling with the acrylic and move on to the oil. Your paintings are really beautiful and always seem to project a mood that draws the viewer in.
Beautiful elk! I love acrylics, ( don't know about oils; sensative to smells ). But I love your artwork and as always your videos are informative & well made. Thank you
Beautiful, no surprise. While I understand it takes skill and practice. With you breaking down your creative process it looks very easy. At least to get started. Very inspiring.😁
Your artwork is incredible as always! I really noticed the improvement in lighting and the new studio layout - it looks fantastic and professional. The sound quality is not bad in my opinion, but if you're looking to take it to the next level, a wireless microphone or shotgun mic could be a game-changer. Keep up the amazing content!
Beautiful painting. I love the effect of the oils over the acrylics. One of the things I find difficult about oils is the need to varnish, and the time needed for the painting to cure before varnishing. Does this technique reduce the drying time at all? Do you varnish your paintings before shipping, or do you use something like a touch-up varnish?
Simply gorgeous!! I was taught that there are four main rules to oil painting. Fat over lean Slow drying over fast Flexible over inflexible Thick over thin Is oil paint more “fat” than acrylic? How much do you thin out the oil paint and with what do you thin it? Also is oil paint more flexible? I am very intrigued about this concept!
Acrylic is totale lean. No fat at all. Gesso is an open layer. Acrylic is a closed layer. Best way to open it, take a cloth with some turpentine and do this over your acrylic before you start with oilpaint. Than your layer is open again and your oilpaint can get his teeth into the acrylic (like with the gesso) I learned this ad the factory from Royal Talens.
Your art is fantastic! are you using water soluble oil paint over the acrylic, or regular oil paint? If you don't mind me asking. I am trying to improve my art skills and would love to try this tecgnique.
Beautiful work 🦌 and I still have the deer on my bucket list. Working on a cute chihuahua at the moment. Summer break over here in BC, Canada 🇨🇦 makes it a bit challenging to get to my easel though…send help 😅
is that a regular drawing pencil that you used on the canvas? in the finished work (from this video) would you say that any part of the canvas is still just acrylic? or have you covered all of the acrylic with oil paint? thank you for the video!
If it’s completely covered in oil, so no acrylic is showing through then it’s an oil painting, if parts of the acrylic show through then it’s oil and acrylic
The problem is that there is no chemical compatibility between oil and acrylic, even if its oil over acrylic. Acrylics tend to change with temperature more than oil. So, if the acrylic expands, the oil will crack.

I am an acrylic painter and almost determined to stick to this medium to show the world what is possible and why oils aren’t always an option. I have kids that I just can’t trust for not touching my work, little fingers on oil…no thnx.
Thank you. Now that I am older 76, managed to accumulate enough art materials on a shoe string budget, I can now restart once again. At the time when People USE to buy Wall Calendars, I figured I would submit about 3 1/2 years of paintings . BUT now many places have enough submitted work up to 5 years. BUMMER FOR me . Brilliant presentation. Not only are you an accomplished artist, but an excellent orator.
Very nice. I've been working like this since I was 17. I'm 46 now. You never stop learning and growing. :)

Beautiful explanation of mixing values of acrylic and oil! Thankyou!!

Oil on acrylic is a lovely way to paint. I find the dry acrylic surface enables the oil paint to flow beautifully
Absolutely beautiful, I myself love oils because of the realistic look, but I use acrylics because of the drying time
Hermoso trabajo!
Voy a probar esta técnica. Muchas gracias por compartir
Beautiful. Thank you so mutch for this video. I never new that you can go over acryl with oil. I only work with acryl.
Absolutely gorgeous! So real looking.

Really oils added much more life in painting
Thanks, for the tip it helped me a lot for my painting
I see how much more depth is in that painting with oils. I‘ll defenetly try out oils too.
Thanks for sharing Daniel 😊

It's absolutely stunning as always. What a powerful combo for extra creativity!

Thank you for a very honest explanation of your new painting techniques. It was interesting to learn how you can soften everything more. 🥰
I like this skech of the deer its so beatufiul with the oils like in 3D
hermosa Pintura, Amo tambien ambos medios pero en mi caso inicie con oleos y luego descubri el acrilico - Gracias por Tus videos
Beautiful elk! I love acrylics, ( don't know about oils; sensative to smells ). But I love your artwork and as always your videos are informative & well made. Thank you
Absolutely magical.
Thank a million for sharing your skill. Do you have any downloadable tutorial videos?
Interesting. Ive never seen that done. I've never tried oils. Guess I'll give it a go. 🤔

Wow you are an artist😍
Потрясаюча картина!
You are an inspiration as always
I’m going to have to try this. You’ve perked my curiosity.
Simply gorgeous!!
I was taught that there are four main rules to oil painting.
Fat over lean
Slow drying over fast
Flexible over inflexible
Thick over thin
Is oil paint more “fat” than acrylic? How much do you thin out the oil paint and with what do you thin it? Also is oil paint more flexible?
I am very intrigued about this concept!
Todays gessos are pretty much mostly acrylic so you paint over acryl anyway.
@@Dita66 Thanks I’ll have to give that a try
I love oil over lay
Awsome work. Are there any archival problems applying oils over acrylics? Would you use an additive to accelerate the drying time of the oils?
You are a pro in painting, but me, I struggled to paint the colour wheel😅😅
Extraordinário. Parabéns
Hola a todos, muy bueno, está pintando sobre un canvas de tela o madera?? Y si es madera cuál sería?...
Do you use watered down burnt sienna every time as the prime layer? Or does it depend on what your subject colors are?
Thank you 🙏
Hello please Can one use linseed oil artisan water mixable oil colour for acrylic paints
Great video. Thanks
Beautiful
Are you you referring back to a reference drawing or photo as you paint?
Your art is fantastic! are you using water soluble oil paint over the acrylic, or regular oil paint? If you don't mind me asking. I am trying to improve my art skills and would love to try this tecgnique.
I've always loved Oils now I'm learning Acrylics❤
Thanks for the 433 subscriber ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
رسم جميل جدا احببته
Is the fixative you use on the drawing specific for graphite and charcoal, or just a very general fixative?
Beautiful work 🦌 and I still have the deer on my bucket list. Working on a cute chihuahua at the moment. Summer break over here in BC, Canada 🇨🇦 makes it a bit challenging to get to my easel though…send help 😅
Good afternoon how are you?
Do you apply burnt sienna imprimatura (primer) with acrylic or oil paint?
It’s acrylic
@@Dita66 thanks
is that a regular drawing pencil that you used on the canvas?
in the finished work (from this video) would you say that any part of the canvas is still just acrylic? or have you covered all of the acrylic with oil paint?
thank you for the video!
Brilliant results ! Are you still using a medium ?
does the oil paint adhere to the Acrylic
But then, say you’re submitting to a gallery or selling online. What would you call the painting? Oil or acrylic?
If it’s completely covered in oil, so no acrylic is showing through then it’s an oil painting, if parts of the acrylic show through then it’s oil and acrylic
Beautiful painting. Why are you not using your own brushes whit the oil paint ?
I painted this one before I got the extra sets, so I only had the sample brushes which I used for the acrylics 😁
Why does you acrylic paint go on so smooth and cover well? Is it the paint. Can name the paint you use?
Great! Which blender brush is this?
Please can you tell me where you get your royalty free images from? You mentioned it in another video but I can't find it 😕
Some known websites are Pexels, Pixabay and Unsplash.
The problem is that there is no chemical compatibility between oil and acrylic, even if its oil over acrylic. Acrylics tend to change with temperature more than oil. So, if the acrylic expands, the oil will crack.
That’s only a problem with thick, flexible acrylic layers, thin washes that soak into the canvas are no problem at all for the oil
I use clear gesso over the acrylic painting to lock it in and give it more permanence before doing the oils.
I really feel like acrylics get a bad wrap....like people almost shun an artist that uses them. Those of us who have sensitivities to chemical smells acrylics are much easier to tolerate.
Thank you for sharing😊
