I never understood the "total outrage" of this game when it released, putting it in such horrible light in public media when the message of the game is to stand up to bullies, you become a defender of those who can't defend themselves and bully the bullies, it's a great turn around.
Squidapple Because it was from people who didn't play the game. They just assumed it was a bullying simulator because GTA was considered a "prostitute murdering" game even though that's never been the focus of the series.
Our old Friend Jack Thompson actually called the game a "Columbine simulator", so yeah, it's obvious people who complained about this game never played it, especially that idiot if he believed that's what the game was.
Just because someone doesn't typically play current stuff that doesn't mean they've stopped playing. Retro gamers pretty much play everything in their own sweet time. We don't skip boat loads of games just because their old, we scour all of gaming history. And that takes time. We're always playing something, we're just on a different time table. This is something non-retro gamers seem to have a hard time understanding. Like I say to my friends, "I don't have to play everything as soon as it comes out. I'll get to it when I get to it."
@@plaindrifter2189 I just played mario and luigi superstar saga this weekend; as one get busy you have to choose which games to play and with all the bs around what people call aaa games, you can never go wrong with an older game that has a lot of praise.
The game really gets better as you go along! You guys barely saw what the game has to offer. As you progress, seasons change and the world opens up and you can explore the whole city and you get bikes and skateboards and learn new fighting combos. And there are some really fun and creative missions as well, like the "Panty Raid" mission on Halloween lol.
Dude really? RED DEAD!!!.. DUDE!!.. DUDE!!!.. RED DEAD!!! .. Sorry.. I'm being sarcastic. I knew exactly what comments this would attract. Bully is way better imo xD
Red dead is great for the new RAGE engine. I still wish they'd bring it to the PC like GTA IV and V, but the forgotten classic has to be The Warriors. Was such a great game.
yeah the GTAish gameplay is when the map opens up and you are able to leave the school grounds. you can skateboard, cycle and use a vespa style moped to get around the map
Some Atari games are evergreen. They are never outdated because they are simple and fun concepts. However not all games age well, this is especially true for sandbox games.
I like Mike, he's funny and goofs around and all that, but *MAN* can he come across as dumb or ignorant at times, sometimes he doesn't really know what he's talking about, and his OBSERVATORY and COMPREHENSIVE SKILLS are for SHIT - sorry! I mean, he's pretty bad at recognizing what an onscreen prompt is, or following simple directions/context clues the game gives. This right here isn't even the best example of that, and the frustration he can put me through. >_
Man, you play some games and you’ll be like, “gee, glad I didn’t buy this when it came out.” Prototype by activision is a great example; that game had so much hype when it came out and it’s such a lame repetitive hack n slash, but bully has a wide variety of content
Mermaid Man Machine gun is a perfectly acceptable colloquialism. Everyone who isn't a pretentious prude looking for self-validation can accept and understand what he's talking about.
Well in the game there's a potato launcher, a rocket launcher (firework), and even a giant rubber ball (I think that's only in the Scholarship edition, though).
ikr I hate how ignorant people are about certain video games. People saying Bully is "like GTA but in a school," Red Dead Redemption is "like GTA but in the wild west," L.A. Noire is "like GTA but in the 1940s," Banjo-Kazooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day are in the same league as Ratchet and Clank, Pyschonauts, and Jak and Dexter and definitely not in the same league as Mario, Kirby, and Donkey Kong even though the people who made them are the same people who made the DKC games. I hate how ignorant people are and are only aware of the "iconic" games like Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duy, etc.
26:40 To be fair the classes are great, give you things, you actually want to get the collectibles (outfits too) and with the story comes different seasons like Autumn/Winter. Then there's the rest of the town. There's just so much more to the game, play past where you are
After using it to push the football coach down a hill while he's in a porta-potty, late in the game, you could keep the mower afterwards for some fun. Not as awesome as the go-kart, but still just as hilarious to use.
I would honestly say that this game is in my absolute Top 5, it's so much fun! Especially when you're able to go into the town, and it opens up more and more. Despite the aged graphical engine, it's just amazing. I love all the classes, the main story, the side missions, all the things to collect and clothes to purchase, everything that you can see and discover. Oh, and the music is just so cool and amazing! 10+ years and I still love to play this!
Yeah no one comments on the music in Bully it really is charming and one of the games greatest strengths and 30 min is not enough to make an evaluation of the game. I would be really happy if Rockstar announced a sequel!!
You guys should really start reading the onscreen prompts; you sometimes seem oblivious to what's actually happening when the explanation is staring you right in the face. It just makes you come across as inexperienced video game players, which of course you aren't. For example, it would prevent questions like "Why are they after me?" when the word 'truancy' is flashing in your HUD...
But sometimes it's hard to concentrate on playing a game while commentating; I mean, some people might be able to multi-task like that, but I sometimes can't focus. Like, for example: I've mastered all of the Souls games and when my friends come over and was playing Demon Souls, I had so much trouble playing while having a conversation.
I agree. James is really biased and overlooks the obvious things of the game all the time. James Rolfe in person is not as likeable as his Nerd character is.
Keep playing the game, it expands quite a bit as you progress and you unlock cool abilities and stuff. You get a skateboard which is awesome to rock around on. Also it's seasonal and the setting changes to suit the different seasons. Eventually you get to leave the school grounds and go to the town and then the game really opens up. Please do some let's plays for this one Mike.
Haha, it was another Biff Tannen quote, to which Marty replies: "It's screen door on a submarine you dork" But I loved the Giant Claw reference! Hahaha. I had to google that and watch the trailer to understand it. It is actually "Bigger than a Battleship" and "Faster than a Jet Plane"! Besides all that, it is also "extraterrestrial. Comes from Outer Space. From some God forsaken *dramatic pause* anti-matter galaxy millions and millions of light years from the Earth." LOL, gotta love classical hyperbolic Sci-Fi! Thank for that reminder! =D
Later in game skateboard, bike opens up along with city, amusement park and a lot of new stuff!! I can recommend this to anyone even in 2017! It holds up good.
NachoFilms1337 I didnt like this game, so i wouldnt say its "Definitely worth a full run" It wouldve been fun to play as a kid, but as an adult i felt that it was a huge waste of time
No need to get upset over his comment for me guys. I appreciate his input. Some people dont like the same types of games and thats okay. No need to tell him to kill himself, jesus christ.
The funny thing is the bully is one of the most neutral groups in this game. They kind of don't like nerds, but after jimmy makes it clear they are rather peacefull. And the funny part is, they are the most loyal group. You know whenn anything goes to shit you can count on good old russel. When anybody hates you, the bullies are allright with you... Kind of strange.
360Ragequit Wow, you guys REALLY don't know shit about games. Everyone knows that Bully was an Atari 5200 game, as it was the only console capable of handling these amazing graphics in 1956. Google is your friend!
James and Mike don't know what a tutorial is. They're too used to old games that just threw you into the middle of whatever shitstorm the game was about. They're also pretty bad at recognizing what an onscreen prompt is, or following simple directions/context clues the game gives.
It was painful to watch this one because of stuff like that all through it. I understand going into a game blind, but when the game is telling you what's going on...
For gamers their level of obliviousness is astounding. I often want to just appear in the shot, say nothing, walk over to the screen and point, and then walk out.
I actually prefer Bully over the old GTA games. It's got a smaller but more detailed map which kinda plays like a collectathon, you get more attached to the characters, the story is really entertaining throughout, the soundtrack is really good and just the overall style and design feels much more timeless. Once you get to the Christmas part of the game, that's when it just clicks.
They want to make a sequel, as far as I know. Dan Houser said so. I think they're doing GTA 6 after RDR2. Bully 2 could come after that. It's a great game that deserves a sequel.

Has anyone else noticed everytime James starts to talk Mike cuts him off? I sometimes I wish James would say shut the fuck up. Oh well I guess it is how real friendships are.
This was really hard to watch. You guys should try watching out for the on-screen prompts and maybe paying more attention to what you're supposed to be doing.
PLAY MORE, you can unlock bikes, you can go outiside the school, to the carnivale, Halloween stuff, go downtown, get tats, kiss girls and boys, give kids wedgies, get a potato bazooka, the game is great!
Mike has that immaturity that lets him enjoy the pranks and setting of the game. I hope he gets real into it and it becomes jaded, just doing missions to get it done, playing it like any other game, like we all did
Most people judge this game very unfairly, saying that is just a violent game where you beat up kids and bully them. This game is actually pretty deep in its story and the main purpose it to stop bullying. Clearly the people that criticized this game didn't understand the smallest bit of the story.
GSV we need more of this actually, kids today are so pampered they can't take any criticism or failure that's why they fucking snap. all their lives they get lied to about how perfect and special they are, then when they figure out the truth they can't handle it.
This game gets really in depth at points. It can almost be called an RPG of some sorts. Playing through I really felt like a kid in some bad ass high school and acted mostly as I would have if it were me. Lack of cut-scene dialogue is only thing keeping it from crossing into the RPG world
TGX Game Reviews also James when doing a AVGN episode doesn't really play a lot post n64 games i think there are only five or six AVGN episodes that are post fifth generation video games
I've 100%ed this game many times over the years. Your let's play video was golden. I laughed hard constantly in this video especially when Mike says "This kid is you James and this is for all of the times that you had me in a rabbit suit." I'm guessing this game takes place in 1988. I like the school part because it's fun mini games.
You guys should play at least it goes to Halloween, the school gets decorations and special missions and costumes too! Later on, the game lets you go to the city, you can get a bike, a skate and so all sorts of things! This is a great game!
@ WTF are U talking about!? They just said they think it's GREAT, James loved it. BTW, you probably didn't know this...but you CAN "mess around" in a game and STILL BE ABLE TO KNOW WHAT THE FUCK YOU'RE DOING & WHAT'S GOING ON by simply *paying attention to the prompts and SCREEN* - that *is* where you look when you play a game, isn't it?? *The fucking screen!* LMAO
According to wikipedia, original was made by Rockstar Games Vancouver ULC (formerly Barking Dog Studios Ltd.). Mad Doc Software made Scholarship Edition remaster.
Punkster Daddy Mad Doc Software is now known as Rockstar New England, not San Diego. It was Angel Studios that became San Diego, which made the RAGE engine, Midnight Club and, of course, Red Dead.
Canadian Retro yeah it updated the graphics and performance a little bit. It also added new missions. But you can't really go wrong wherever you play this game.
0:20 You think that beating Ghosts n' Goblins makes you champions? I did too for a while. You'll be at the top of the world before 2000 if you can beat all the games after Ghosts. After that, it gets easier.

This was really hard to watch. You guys should try watching out for the on-screen prompts and maybe paying more attention to what you're supposed to be doing.
Fr I love em to death but my god
Gamer elitist look out
This is one of the best games, a sequel would be great. I highly recommend this game to anyone.
PLAY MORE, you can unlock bikes, you can go outiside the school, to the carnivale, Halloween stuff, go downtown, get tats, kiss girls and boys, give kids wedgies, get a potato bazooka, the game is great!
TOKAGERO1 Fuck girls, have threesomes..It's Great.
Bully should never be forgotten. Timeless Classic.
Oh my God I love this game! I can't believe it's already 11 years old already. Such fond memories of this great game. :)
Mike has that immaturity that lets him enjoy the pranks and setting of the game.
I hope he gets real into it and it becomes jaded, just doing missions to get it done, playing it like any other game, like we all did
This is literally my favorite game of all time.
yall were really bad at this one LOL
This game is fantastic, it only gets better the more you play as you unlock everything.
Hope James and Mike come back to this one eventually. Lots more to this game than they got to, not to mention that epic ending.
10:05 My favorite quote of this game.
Wish they kept playing, like a multi-part episode!
"I've been thinking about snails recently: They're slimy!"
_-Algernon and James, 2017_
11:35 Hey look, it's a bunch of nerds. Who are angry. In a video game. I suppose you could say they're...
Nah.
XH1927 yeah I bet they're all nostalgia critics and cinema snobs too.
Please continue playing it! This game is awesome!
Play through the whole game. There is a lot more to this game than you think.
you can eventually leave the school and adventure around a city. pretty fun
This game gets really in depth at points. It can almost be called an RPG of some sorts. Playing through I really felt like a kid in some bad ass high school and acted mostly as I would have if it were me. Lack of cut-scene dialogue is only thing keeping it from crossing into the RPG world
always loved the music used in this game. very memorable
17:46 Mike goes into his Bugs Bunny voice LMAO
"Stop tickling and I'll show you."
James: ○___○
James should review this game on his show.
did you know that this game is available on Xbox 360 and Xbox one through backwards compatibility
Tyler Martell Lol yeah imagine an AVGN episode of this 😂
I mean it's more modern but it could still work just because of the theme.
Tyler Martell Also available on Windows.
but the problem is, its a good game
TGX Game Reviews also James when doing a AVGN episode doesn't really play a lot post n64 games i think there are only five or six AVGN episodes that are post fifth generation video games
Bunny costume! If you only you guys got to Halloween haha.
Raiden2421. LOL that's true cause of the kid that tries to be Jimmy's best friend.
Grey shirts? Did your periods sync up as well?
I've 100%ed this game many times over the years. Your let's play video was golden. I laughed hard constantly in this video especially when Mike says "This kid is you James and this is for all of the times that you had me in a rabbit suit." I'm guessing this game takes place in 1988. I like the school part because it's fun mini games.
8:31 the guy on the right looks like James.
White shirts aren't nerds, they're bullies.
The nerds in the couch calling every bully who fights them, "nerds".
watching them play any game that isnt retro is so frustrating, holy shit
ᶘ oᴥoᶅ Don't do it, then?
ᶘ oᴥoᶅ The Ps2 is retro now. Deal with it.
dolt it really is it drives me crazy how lost they can be at times lol
Here's thought, don't fucking watch it if it bothers you that much.
James is horrible at games with more than two buttons.
I was thinking that lol
Glad it's not just me....
Yeah i used to think it was just me and then i read this comment thread
That's not true!... _SUPER NINTENDO_ has *3x* as many buttons :P - he plays *that!* ;}
@Reveu Le'Sean jeez he's right
It keeps getting better the further into it too, specially when you unlock the town
Watching Constantinos eat all that chocolate is making me hungry.
You keep calliing the "Bullies" the "Nerds".
Dead Garden Gnome how they're clearly taller and dont wear glasses
One of my all-time favorite games. I want a sequel!!
Mike reminds me of Dennis from It's Always Sunny
You guys should play at least it goes to Halloween, the school gets decorations and special missions and costumes too! Later on, the game lets you go to the city, you can get a bike, a skate and so all sorts of things! This is a great game!
Play the Warriors. It’s one of the best examples of a 3D beat em up you can find and considering how both James and Mike love Double Dragon...
I love it when you guys play newer games like this!!
It’s called Practice
Seeing you play games that came after the SNES just hurts me. Why can you guys not read on-screen instructions?
Lickinger
Maybe because they're two friends messing around on a bad game they don't really give a tin shit about?
- bad game? Holy fuck you're stupid. Nearly every one that PLAYED this game loves it.
Mike at 5:34 - My friend it such a dork! *laughs in nerd*
girlbassist k
One of my favourite games of all time, I grew up with this one and I cherish it greatly. Thanks for playing it James and Mike!
Thanks for playing my game!
Rockstar didn't make this game, they published it. It was Mad Doc Software who are now known as Rockstar San Diego.
I played it on the Wii, and it was my favourite game on it. Was so good.
I can't believe you've never played bully!
My favorite video game ever 😊 Thanks for doing this little homage!
I need to replay this game, had so much fun with it years ago
i remember the controversy when this game come out. It was going to be banned in the UK.
wow that flashback.
bully needs a sequel and a remaster on ps4 store :D
Scholarship edition on xbox360 might have some updates but never played either so I have no idea really.
Dang ... I remember that game, but watching you too playing that was just too much fun :D just getting into trouble after trouble. Excelent!
I like "Why are they after me?" when there is a flashing message saying "truancy"
why didn't you isolate the game audio from the commentary audio?
"This is England" The video game.
One of rockstars most underrated games. I would love for a Bully 2 or a remake of this
One of the best games ever created. Got me through my freshman year at a brand new highschool when me and my parents moved to a new city.
