Please, also make sure your battery is in good shape and perform a complete energy diagnosis before repairing or replacing the FRM.
This was my first attempt, after researching hours and hours and going through the procedure in my head many times before attempting. I advise you to become mentally comfortable with this procedure beforehand as well, especially if you’re just an enthusiast and not a professional technician.
The tool I used is just as much as a new FRM from the internet (not the stealer). A new unit might be a viable option especially if you expect to only do this once in your life.
But for you seasoned technicians like myself out there, it would be a good investment (as this is a common problem on the Exx vehicles between 2007-2012) and great cost savings for your customer.
Make sure the fuses are good and solid power and ground is present at the FRM (I like to use a test light to verify circuit integrity), also make sure there’s a healthy CAN signal before repairing or replacing the FRM. Correct any power/ground/can issues first!

Thanks for the video. My x5 had some water intrusion. I disconnected and reconnect the battery and reconnected it. After that and the lighting system error message appeared. From reading online, the simple act of replacing the battery terminal is enough to fry the FRM3 module.
VVID is expensive!! Xprog on the other hand is just $50. If you don't want to learn all of that, there are listing on ebay to do the fix for you for $50 + shipping.
Yea in most cases, sending it out is cheaper and more convenient than doing this. And under severe time constraints, replacement is even better when cost isn’t in the equation. Yes vvdi is $500, but xprog is $1300 for the basic package. $50 for the xprog clone which I’ve personally had problems with (which is why I didn’t advertise it in this video) but it’s relatively the same process. Vvdi is a good tool with great support. I had choppy to no support with xprog clone. But yea I was just here to help anyone willing to tackle this themselves. I like diy for the experience and bragging rights haha.

Sorry for late reply. But the dflash only gets populated when the eeprom is corrupted. We use the dflash to regenerate the eeprom. You may have a hardware fault or are not reading the frm correctly.
Do you know where I can get the 12v power supply cable? My VVDI did not come with one

I never experienced coding issues after repair. I have heard stories of that, but can’t say first hand.
Where did you get the solderless clip? I can only find it for the cas4 module.

Thanks! It’s corrosion inhibitor. We elected to have it on both pos and neg terminals since it we happened to have it laying around.

That means your frm eeprom is not corrupted. When the eeprom gets corrupted, the dflash gets populated. We use the dflash to regenerate the eeprom, then after we write the good eeprom back to frm, the dflash will be 0.
