Fix BMW X5 E70 Parking Brake Malfunction

If you’re getting the yellow Brake light with the “parking brake malfunction” message on your BMW X5 E70, here are your fixes:
1) make sure your car battery has good voltage, put the car in ignition 2, push on the brake pedal, push on the parking brake button for five seconds to reset the parking brake actuator
2) If it doesn’t fix the problem you have to manually release your parking brake. Refer to the manual or other TH-cam videos which show how you can access the parking brake emergency release cable in the trunk and use the special tool included to release the parking brake. Try resetting the Brake as described in step one
3) if it doesn’t solve the problem try removing the parking brake fuse and putting it back again. This method has worked for some other people as you may find another TH-cam video from Australia
4) if you can’t get it to work at this point you need to delete the error codes in the car computer by connecting a special cable and using a laptop or a BMW tool to check the errors and reset the parking brake. Do this before trying hardware repair on the actuator.
5) If after trying all the solutions above you still cannot get the parking brake to work you need to follow the steps described in the video to disassemble the parking brake and get the actuator out and repair it. The repair Could involve replacement of the motor replacement of the whole module or repair of the cables.

I have a volvo and same thing happened to me. Left the car parked with a weakish battery for 9 days while i travelled. Came back to this error. Don't know why these manufacturers switched to an electronic system for this when the reliable mechanical system really didnt need to be changed.

the cause on that was the contacts on the fuses were dirty/faulty. by removing and reinstalling, the fuse, it got a better contact. i would replace the fuse or clean the contacts w/ Sandpaper

Hey,very good job-of coarse I have the same problem ,blah blah blah- Im lacking a proper scan tool is the only deal-Your cable is ok but...I am an auto tech without the tools to fix the damn thing- We have a solus at the shop,Ill sneak it out tomarrow and see if its got beemer ebrake software- Thanx,take care

He guys I bought the cheapest cable on Amazon:
BMW K+DCAN USB to OBDII OBD2 Car Cable Diagnostic Scanner Tool
I paid about US $20 for it.
Used the driver software that came with the cable and also here: www.bimmergeeks.net/downloads
Once you get the cable connected properly, the INPA software (downloaded from link above) should detect the car. Follow the software menus to reset the parking brake.

Hi. What do you mean by big noise? My 2011 530D GT gives me an error that the parking brake is not working but it's actually working. The gong keeps going on though.

The issue was a broken cable lol it could happen because it was old or when they adjust the cable to tight

I had the error code 006023 and the yellow parking brake light was constantly on display. It dissapeared after error code reset with Carly and resetting the parking brake by pressing brake and pushing down the parking brake switch. Similarly as i the video.

Press and hold the brake pedal, lift e-brake liver up, on a dash you will see a indicater light coming on. You are done. To release: press and hold the brake pedal again, push the liver down. You done.

Did you head a very loud screeching noise after unlocking the car? Mine did & after replacing with a refurbished one, it did the same thing. I have a new one this time to install.

That would make more sense to me instead of doing all this work for no reason.

The codes are permanent in flash, this is an old school method which does not work anymore
