  • We've now gone west to the town of Taigu in Shanxi province to discover the roots of Xingyi Quan. In today's episode we attend a gathering of a group of masters and practitioners of Che Style Xingyi in an abandoned factory a short drive out of town.
    In this series, I team up with Paul Andrews of Xingyi Academy and Jon Nicklin to travel to Tianjin, Shanxi and Henan to explore the various styles of the art of Xingyi Quan. We will cover the Hebei Style of Li Cun Yi, Song and Che Family Xingyi in Taigu, Dai Style Xinyi in Qi County and Muslim Xinyi Liuhe in Henan Province.

    I'm having so many epiphanies right now about the five elements and some of the twelve animals it's not even funny! I didn't realize that Xingyi has as many elbow and body strikes as Bajiquan.
    As someone who has to teach myself Che Style Xingyi (via tutorials from Zhang Xi Gui because no one here practices or has even heard of Che Style Xingyi), videos and documentaries like this are an invaluable source of information about how Xingyi is such a full system and the possibilities of techniques within movements

    I can't help but noticing from one episode to another that the combat methods seem to be quite different from the forms... As opposed to Tang Lang for an example, which is more of a "what you see is what you get" kind of approach.
    Any ideas if there is a reason behind?

    • @artoffence
      @artoffence 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Xingyi fighting concepts can be very abstract. It makes it hard to learn strategies from the forms alone, but if somebody shows you the methods you can find the connection to the form in the way execution of techniques feel, rather than how they look.

    • @Livingtree32
      @Livingtree32 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The forms are the basic training of your respective style, your solo training for everyday. At least for the styles I practice (Taijiquan and Xingyiquan), the forms are not meant to be "applied", but rather build up certain movement qualities in our bodies, which then have to be transferred into applications. The applications may or may not resemble the form movements, but they have to contain the essence of what you train in your solo exercises.

    • @TriEssenceMartialArts
      @TriEssenceMartialArts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      While external styles has precise applications, originally internal styles was less about techniques and all about internal power and superior structure, for example the famous Xingyi master Guo Yunshen, made his name defeating countless ppl with only Beng Quan, which is just one punch, what allowed him to win was not the technique but the structure and power he has. As time pass on, less and less ppl if any, can reach the ability of those olden day masters, which is why more and more application was invented to cover the lack of superior structure and power, and since every lineage and branch did this on their own, the later invented applications are not universal.

      @@TriEssenceMartialArts yes. The way I see it is that me, you, and all the guys in this video probably do different versions of chicken form for example.
      At the end of the day the specific applications may vary but the essence of the chicken is there, we should all be able to recognise "that's a chicken form" even though it's not the way we may do it. We should see the spirit of the animal, not a catalogue of external techniques.

  • @ambulocetusnatans
    @ambulocetusnatans 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's a little different than typical Xing Yi. Some of the movements are unexpected. Do you think you will incorporate all the things you learned from the different styles into your personal training?

    • @MonkeyStealsPeach
      @MonkeyStealsPeach  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well some of those guys there also practice Shuai Jiao and Sanda, so its a bit of a mix really.
      Yes, I picked up various things from the different teachers I've met and filmed and incorporate it into my own training.

    • @Livingtree32
      @Livingtree32 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It depends on what you define as "typical Xingyi". Hebei is kind of seen as a standard nowadays due to higher exposure. Shanxi styles in many regards seem to be closer to the Dai Xinyi roots of the art. To me personally the Hebei styles are "a little different". 😁

      you guys are too focused on tradition, look at principles of power and fighting principles your eyes will open. remember the name "form fist" Hsing I was famous for being explosive powerful and most of all adaptable.

    • @Livingtree32
      @Livingtree32 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philjohnston7920 The literal meaning of tradition is the transmission from teacher to pupil. Without this person to person tradition there are no principles left. And Xingyiquan does not mean form fist, but Form Intention Fist. Without the traditional approach you will not be able to grasp neither the right external form, nor the internal intentions that go with it. That's why few people master the fundamental stage in all Chinese martial arts, not only Xingyiquan.
