    What you refer to as upper waist, my teacher called moving the ribs. This was stressed in training and exercised assiduously. I've never heard anyone else show this, that's why I'm impressed.
    Thanks

    Dear Xing Yi Academy , Congratulation on having shown the main aspect of Self Defence, that is the Distance!!!
    It is also the so called Ariadne-line along which one is able to find thhis or her way out of the dark. To me, all the martial arts are specialized in Long Distance, some at Medium, or Fighter-range and some at Short distance, mostly for grappling or JUDO, etc. However, there arewho use all of them at once, in a so called phased approach - like the military: They have rockets on Long distance, Rifles on medium distance and pistols or knives at short distance. Well, it is always up to us which approach to prefer. Thank you and good health.!!! Paul, 66retired instructor of Sports Karate

    • @Xingyiacademy
      @Xingyiacademy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for watching and leaving a comment but I don't think you understand the term "MMA" - Mixed Martial Arts, your statement is very simplistic. It's a mix of different arts, methods and techniques. Xing Yi is a pretty rare art, it's not well known or spread like say Muay Thai or BBJ, but there are plenty of similar techniques employed by Xing Yi and other arts. So there are likely lots of methods already being used in MMA which would be very similar or the same as Xing Yi Methods. I'm quite sure that should someone wish to train in Xing Yi and MMA the Xing Yi training would give them lots of options and ideas to take into their MMA practice. Most experienced martial artists will evolve their art beyond the limitations of a single style and make their practice and training more individual, therefore practicing something that is mixed or hybridised or unique to themselves. There has always been cross training and evolution in the martial arts, MMA is not a "style" it's a ruleset, and what you do in combat is "fighting" not necessarily adhere to a rigid system or style you do what is appropriate.
      From personal experience I have been to MMA gyms and I found a lot of their practices to be very basic. Just like any martial art system most of the guys there are rubbish, they are there for fun or to get fit. A few guys are serious hobbyists who are pretty good and spend a lot of time on it but still live a normal life and have a job etc. Then you get a few guys who are professionals, a really small number. And these are the guys you are probably talking about. You can't compare professional fighters to serious hobbyists. They train for a living. There aren't that many Xing Yi guys in the world, not everyone wants to compete, most are just in it for fun and health. There are some like myself who are serious but we aren't professionals. If I had time and money to train professionally or more realistically to train a younger guy to compete then I'm sure that Xing Yi would be pretty good in MMA competitions - when I trained in the gyms I went to I held my own against experienced guys and guys fitter and bigger than myself so I'm sure it wouldn't be a complete failure!
      Plus you need to factor in the individual. Some people are naturally good fighters, may be big and strong and have physical advantages, these cannot be discounted. So you might have someone who is just really good at fighting who practices say karate, their fighting might not be any relation to the fact they train karate or aikido or whatever, it's not just style that matters.
      Also traditional Xing Yi is mainly about weapons. If a MMA trained fighter tried to take me on with a sword or a spear, it might be a different story.

    • @hwillis8
      @hwillis8 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Xing Yi Academy I’m actually curious about a few things. It seems like some karate can be used in MMA to an extent, and it’s obvious that Chinese arts had a major influence on goju ryu and most forms of karate. Do you believe that arts like Xingyiquan have been either watered down or are so rare that they are difficult to find good practitioners? And where did you learn?

    • @Xingyiacademy
      @Xingyiacademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hwillis8 I think there are a lot of factors. MMA is a sport which is mostly predominant in the west. Xing Yi is rare in the west and usually because of this Xing Yi schools are small and not commercial so training professional fighters is not really something they can do financially. There were many schools of Xing Yi which have been somewhat watered down in mainland China and the influence of the Guoshu and Modern Wushu movements from around the 1920s onward as well as some Chinese social policies has had an affect to either water down the schools or for the more serious schools to become smaller and less public. You can still find good practitioners in China and in the west. In China many schools will not teach much sparring or contact especially to people who are not well known to them, this is to avoid the potential of getting in trouble with the authorities if someone should complain about getting hurt, and also to avoid loss of face. Even good practitioners might take a slap or kick in sparring but for a younger, less experienced martial artist to do so to an older established master would be somewhat controversial. It is an issue in some places, but some teachers are also up for some rough and tumble. You also get a whole range of practitioners from those who want to fight, to those that are there for health or to socialise etc. And you get this in all combat arts, I've been to MMA gyms and there might be like 2 guys really serious, 5-10 guys who are not bad, and a whole load of guys that just do it as a hobby. And even those guys who might want to sport fight have a limited time frame to do so - in your 20s/30s mainly then the fitness is difficult to keep up with. And those guys might have jobs and families etc which stop them getting serious. And there are some great guys that don't want to compete. And it depends on where you are in the world and whether there are any decent events/competitions too. So the combination of all these factors means that the number of good practitioners of Xing Yi Quan who have the means and resources to fight, skills to fight, and will to fight is extremely low.
      There is also the fact that Xing Yi and same with a lot of martial arts, they can be complex and although you could learn to fight somewhat effectively with a simplified system or just basics it can take a long time to get good at fighting with these arts and you need to have some motivation and intelligence, so a lot of people quit. Even guys who are good might quit because they don't have time to dedicate to the training.
      Personally I'm in my late 30s now and have a demanding full time job. It would be difficult if not impossible for me to quit my job and fight competitively and make enough money to pay the bills. For many years I wasn't even aware of any local events or competitions to enter so never had the opportunity. My teacher taught us in a car park in the city centre, we did drills and exercises, forms and applications and we fought and also fought with weapons. My teacher met his first Xing Yi teacher while studying in the UK, his teacher was also a student, a Chinese Malaysian who then went home after university. After some time he moved to Leeds (my city) and studied with another Chinese teacher who was teaching at Leeds University (Master Zhu Guang). Later Master Zhu returned to Beijing to focus on his academic career. Then my teacher had the chance to work in China regularly and found a small private group to train with in Beijing. So the art I was taught came from 3 lines all Hebei Style Xing Yi.
      Since then I have also travelled to China twice. I studied Yi Quan intensively with Yao Chengrong for 6 hours a day almost every day for a month. I also studied some basic Chinese wrestling with coach Wong Tong Qing in Beijing. Then last year I went and travelled around with my friends Jon Nicklin and Will Wain-Williams (Monkey Steals Peach TH-cam Channel) and we interviewed teachers from a range of Xing Yi styles and schools in Tianjin and Taigu. All the teachers we met had good skills in different areas and the younger guys from the Che Style in Taigu were particularly focused on practical fighting skills.

      I'm from UK we invented Football, Tennis, Rugby, Cricket, Golf, but it doesn't mean I'm automatically good at any of them. Being from China doesn't mean you'll be great at gong fu. I've been to Beijing and Shanghai, lots of people are not very good but practice for health and for fun. It's difficult to see "internal" on video because it is inside so maybe can't be seen. Also having the internal power doesn't necessarily mean you have combat skill. Plenty of boxers have no internal power as you might say but could maybe beat a gong fu guy in a fight. If you have videos please show the entire world on your own TH-cam channel, I will watch, we need more people to show good gong fu all over the world to promote our passion. Many thanks for watching my channel and responding. I was just having fun with the word "gas" I knew what you meant and was just being playful :-) xie xie

You clearly have no idea about Xing Yi Quan, which very much is a stand up striking art. I've also trained a little bit in shuai jiao and wrestled with plenty of decent shuai jiao students in Beijing without having my ass handed to me. Frankly you need to do better, provide more evidence of your perceived authority and present something of value rather than just criticizing others. I've to Beijing and generally no one is doing anything like this in the parks. It's rare to see anyone talking about applications or fighting strategy at all, mainly forms and standing and qi gong stuff. Which is great but not the whole picture. This is a free to view youtube video so please don't expect enlightenment in under 9 minutes, if it were that easy then everyone would be masters, this is just a taste of what we practice. Also fighting is more chaotic and difficult than most people realise when they are doing their nice forms and their master is demonstrating something on a guy who stands like a dummy, a lot of the simple things are the most useful, a lot of the esoteric "indoor learning" is worthless when it comes to practicality.
