  • Unplanned and unscripted - what could possibly go wrong?
I'm forcing myself to learn Davinci Resolve so there may be some audio/video quirks. It's a feature not a bug.

This reminded me of taking the bus as a kid to the nearest town where they had tech stores just to drool over the 8600gt etc with cool designs behind glass counters.. every kid playing outside would flex their vram size lol.. somehow not even 4090 gets me as excited nowadays

I feel the same way sometimes - I spend more time on my old computers to relive some of that magic than on my main PC with a 2080 super.

For me, it was boxart and some of those radical looking heatsinks.

    Yep, I had that motherboard.

Considering the late 2000's NVidia graphics card (notoriously shit), I'm surprised I didn't have corrupted textures all over the place :)

That hdd cooler thing is likely missing some other piece that was taken out with the hard drive i think.
    Speaking of junkyard parts though...
So far I've found a noctua nh-u12 cpu cooler, shares identical mounting hardware too the one i own personally at home so 85$ saved instantly on another cpu cooler that's high quality & pretty good in size, didn't bother too look at what cpu was in the motherboard though but was ddr2 on the motherboard so probably socket 775 core 2 duo or core 2 quad of some sort.
I'm not really interested in those having an I5 2500k at 4 ghz atm too mess with instead as a testrig.
2x2 gb ddr3 & ddr2, the ddr3 is at 1600 mhz a pair of corsair xms3 & ddr2 kit is their previous corsair xms2 800 mhz, though one might be bad as i had some random boot loops with one of the sticks at one point on a matx motherboard with an athlon x2 6000+.
    640 gb 2.5 inch hdd from a laptop + it's 2x4 gb ramsticks which I've misplaced somewhere i really can't find them.
A 2.5 inch 750 gb hdd from another laptop + another set of ramsticks which I've put too use in an also found hp 8440p laptop from at the junkyard in the e-scrap container.
Bios battery for like 5$ as it's one of those with a 2 pin plug, maybe ssd & a proper battery as there is none atm so wallpower or nothing & it's a solid webbrowsing machine really 1st gen I5 540 so not exactly speedy but does the job still today.
An akasa X4 cpu cooler & a HD 5670 from HIS or Sapphire which was missing the fan plug.
Like some kid cut it with scissors in hopes of getting a pc upgrade probably after inheriting it from an older sibling which left it behind 10+ years ago or perhaps parent themselves brought it out of storage thinking it was still good in todays time.
Cpu was a core 2 duo e7400 so not exactly a great cpu for that card a year or two into it's lifetime & 3x 2 gb ddr2 ramsticks with mismatched speeds.
Got a e8400 overclocked too 4 ghz on a socket 775 board that's in storage anyway if i want too run socket 775 for some testing again, also got a q6600 sitting around for that board.
A msi 9800 gt with a zalman vf1050 gpu cooler on it, doesn't work in my socket 1155 system though oddly enough, might be some odd pci-e compatibility issue with z77 chipset so it's kind of eh whatever i got more gpus too mess with anyway if i feel like it.
MIght have been from factory but it's working fine, paired up for a bit with an athlon x2 6000+ in a matx pc i built with that 640 gb hdd.

I actually used XP x64 back in the day as I had some photo-editing software that could really leverage the extra ram. That said, once Vista x64 came out I jumped immediately; there’s really no use case for that version of XP anymore.

Sounds about right, I wonder if there are any games that can support x64 XP.
I tried it once or twice in the late 2000's on my Intel iMac and haven't touched it since. If a system has the extra RAM, I'd rather run Vista or 7.

With 9800gt id prefer win7 with most of the apps runs with win xp compatibility 😊

I've considered going with Win7 on this PC. It's actually really buggy and needs a full rebuild.

Any tips on how to launch Portal from the latest files? I've tried a couple times with adding startup options in a shortcut but that hasn't worked for any source game for me.

I copied them from my modern PC's steam installation around 2020/2021, so maybe something has changed since then re: DRM. Pretty sure it's just "hl2.exe -game portal" making sure the shortcut 'start in' folder is the root directory where the "portal" folder is.

Ok thanks. I did hear that an update was made in 2022 or 2023 that made them sadly incompatible with XP. Keep those copies, lol. Great video by the way. Been pretty obsessed with making different XP machines and trying different hardware combos.
