Spearfishing The Undesirables Ep 7 Rock Cale

  • Spearfishing Rock Cale or Cockie is definite undesirable that I knew would come. Prolific around Sydney and NSW but after the hike and spear survival experience I think I would rather eat dirty sand than eat another Cale. But its 2021 and the people requested it so here we are.
    I spearfishing in Sydney and the surrounding areas of Australia. The whole purpose of the Undesirables Series is to try and tempt people into eating different fish and break away from the traditional attitude that there's only 5-6 good eating fish in Australia. If we ate a more varied selection of fish from the ocean there wouldn't be massive pressures on particular stocks. So eating a greater variety of fish will make our spearfishing more sustainable.
    I tried cooking this fish in a way that nothing could taste bad... or so I thought.
    Thanks to the bro Johnnie for making an appearance and helping out with the camera... think we should stick to the Korean bbq instead.

    All fish were of legal size and were speared for consumption, I have a NSW Fishing Licence and abide by catch size limits, daily takes and no fish zones. Over the past 5 years now I have made the commitment to no longer buy fish, so I only eat the fish i catch. Spearfishing is the most sustainable form of fishing on the planet, it is also the most environmentally friendly form of fishing.

    It sucks that it was miserably cold out there but that’s also part of the fun!! So many fish are overlooked as trash fish that can be okay or good in the right conditions! I really will have to find a location like this to camp/hike and spear over time! I’ve noticed many fish that eat kelp and such are putrid smelling in the guts and that impacts fish flavor too!

    • @WetMammal
      @WetMammal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stoked editing the hike and spear video though i hope it makes up for the long break. Yeah completely agree with the kelp eating fish

      @@WetMammal I wipe, fillet and skin weed eaters ( silver and black drummer, zebra fish etc. ) on the rare times I target and decide to eat them. I usually gut/gill immediately, then use an old toothbrush to scrub out the gut cavity, rinse, then in the esky with ice. Fillet and skin as soon as I get home. Salt, pepper, fennel or dill, lemon/lime juice cooked in butter. They are not bad then.

    Should try mullet for your next one, mullet from the salt in Australia are actually pretty good, just have to bleed and gut them on capture of course. We do distinguish them though, the mullet in the estuaries tend to be fattier and muddier and just all round a LOT worse than the mullet in the full salt which are a lot firmer/whiter fleshed and honestly pretty good for most cooking styles, we then have the Yellow eyed mullet as well which is quite decent also, could be a couple ideas for the undesirables in future? As always, love the series bro, cheers.

      It is still advisable to remove the skin because it stinks jajajajaja . use garlic, lemon with good acidity, it all depends on the chef's hand ... but better not eat it. Maybe they smell worse there.
