I have a 2016 Outback 3.6R. I am soooo glad I opted for the 6 cylinder engine. It is smooth, really good acceleration (no turbo lag), reasonable MPG on regular gas. Creature comforts throughout the interior. While I really like the new Outback, it will likely be a longer time, at least a few years, before I decide to upgrade. In the mean time, I will continue to watch for the future improvements Subaru makes for the Outback, and enjoy my current ride :)
So I just bought a 2020 Subaru outback premium. I fell in love with it after I test drove the Forrester and the ascent. I kept going back to the outback and I finally took it out and I went home with one. I traded in a 2013 Ford Explorer and downsized to the sport wagon. The touchscreen I have not had any issues with it and with it getting super cold in Ohio here the screens work perfect for me. I would invest in the starling system and have remote start from your car to your phone. There’s no point in having a wireless charger put into the car because the only way CarPlay works is if you have your phone Plugged in. This is my first Subaru. It’s sold itself. I would highly recommend it. The premium comes with a lot of bells and whistle‘s that you don’t find in a similar priced vehicle. I’ll also mention I’m 6ft7 and find this model much roomier than the last model which I noticed right away before I knew that they had made it slightly bigger.
Getting rid of the Ford is the best thing you ever did. I have a 2018 Outback Premium 2.5 , 41,000 now, from Ohio , I drove to the Rockies, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Black hills and Badlands. I really really love this new wagon edition. I am also very tired of hearing people complain about the CVT. Everyone shut up about it already. I have two outbacks with cvt's. One a 2.5 and one a 3.6, they are fine and get you to where you want to go with decent power if you want more power go buy a dodge challenger, but seriously quit it.
its not about how much power it has, its power distribution to the wheels, CVT just can handle some mild obstacles like a true 4wd system. now I do agree that people should shut up about it because its an apples to oranges debate, a Subaru will never be as capable as like a Wrangler, Tacoma, 4Runner and such, but you don't use a Subaru for the same applications that you would the aforementioned vehicles.
Have you actually driven one though? I loved it on paper until I stomped on the gas and experienced that CVT. It saps any enjoyment from driving its sooooooooo slow 0-30mph its like you're hauling a huge trailer. They need Toyota's hybrid-CVT which uses a traditional first gear to fix the really bad low-speed performance of CVTs.
Great Video. But the point you made was what I have been feeling for years. Why subaru is using a less capable AWD system/transmission on the newer models than the older Outbacks? I've had five Subarus and I miss standard options like Locking center diff, LSD in the rear and VDC systems. At least give is a 6 speed with 50/50 and rear locker option, or LSD with a dual range transmission. (JDM ADM) This CVT or nothing makes since for the fuel mileage but as long as it's getting better MPG's than a 4Runner you will always have buyers looking for TRD Pro capabilities in a daily driver.

I'm sure there'll be times where I think dang.....wish I had the runner right now.......but I sure won't miss out all the time I'm on the highway, the city, around town, at the gas pump, enjoying the new technology, etc.
the fourth subaru am having, but l ask do the Subaru people now about the first part in all the subaru to break, its the Ic bearings, then follows the other bearings.
The screen just got a update that turns the display from landscape to portrait. This means Apple CarPlay fill most of the screen. Still has the display at the top and bottom, but it fills the rest. Also seems a lot less buggy and more responsive since the update.
At least the windows have frames (part of the door, now). I like it despite the CVT. My son in law drives one in Colorado (secondary, snowy roads). Pretty nice vehicle.
I Hate window frames. wish they would bring back the old style. Much nicer when you have the windows down and you sit to open the doors and hop out...no need to clear your head and chin around the frame.
A more powerful engine is definitely nice to have for sure, and a turbo version is one relatively easy way to get that, at an increased maintenance cost of course... But what Subaru has *always* needed to do on their cars, especially with the more capable wagon versions like the Outback and Forester AWD ones, is to have (available in ALL markets as an option), a true Low Range capable transfer case or transmission, AND an optionally available completely MANUAL, 6-SPEED OR BETTER transmission at that, available even on the top end model with all of the extras!!... And also, maybe even more helpful than that, would be to have the ability to manually, (with the push of three individual buttons or switches), to also be able to electronically lock all 3 differentials, (rear, front, and center), when/if needed, kind of like in a Mercedes G-Wagon or similar! And finally, to be able to, (again with the push of a button), to adjust the ride height and suspension travel, (i.e. to be able to increase the ground clearance), when driving off road and when you needed it!... Those things would make these Subaru models the MOST capable they could be without actually becoming a real "truck like" SUV like a Jeep Wrangler or a Toyota 4-Runner or something even more cumbersome!... Unfortunately I guess Subaru gears their cars more towards the casual daily city drivers rather than the outdoor adventure types like me!

Love your videos, I would have liked to see an acceleration from stop on the road, though. Also, I am praying that they give back a turbo to the Forester again in the next year or so!!! If you know anything about this, let us know.
Never mind the turbo what about the diesel and the manual box ! We have a 15 Forester diesel manual and love it, I don’t want a petrol/gas engine and I don’t want a CVT box either 😡 are Subaru trying to lose sales in Europe ? 🇬🇧
my roommate has one and I love it! The only thing I am concerned with is the engine sounds so "loose" especially during a cold start! They all seem to sound like this though so I know it's a Subaru thing.
Ahhh the infamous subie piston slap. Since the they're horizontal they give the described sound until they expand when the engine warms. I never thought of owning one at all until I drove one. I often get asked how I got my vehicle somewhere that they didn't think a "car" could go. I've climbed very steep hills with very large rocks with no problems just by taking my time and navigating appropriately. I still chuckle though when people ask how I got there. I've drove through 1.5' of snow without a hitch as well. I even seen a subie pull a semi truck off the side of a show covered road. It was slow but worked. There's a video on TH-cam but it might have been a WRX that did the towing. Amazing cars and I will never own anything else besides an outback for the rest of my life.
During cold start it's hydraulic compensators of chain inside engine. Metal rattling. I own FB25 and it pisses me off so much. Sound of expensive engine repair, but everyone keeps saying it's OK and my Forester runs fine for the second year under me.
I love my new 2020 Outback Touring XT. It is a wonderfully fun car ! And I give it 5 out of 5 stars. But I have to say I also love your accent........Russian is it ?? I give it 4 out of 5 stars. :-} Signed, Doug.
I've got 2 Outbacks and 2 Legacy's after just retiring my 2002 Outback. I can't for the life of me understand why they got rid of the 3.6 for the twin turbo. As a guy who keeps cars forever I can't trust any turbo to last 15 years. They just spin too fast for too long to be problem free. My oldest Outback is a 2010 with 175,000 miles and the 3.6 and I don't know what I'll do to replace it. Luckily there are a bunch on the used market.
@@TheSirviceroy Second word , economy. The 2.4 turbo has same hp as the 3.6R but better mpg. On a side note, the new 2.5 engine has 7 more hp than the previous version. Doesn’t sound like a lot but it’s a noticeable difference.
@@CarQuestion Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2 speed transfer case, skid plates, tow hooks, quadra lift adjustable ground clearance, all terrain tires. I love it. I've had it for 3 years. Drives beautifully on highway, dirt roads, sandy beaches etc. Lots of power too. I highly recommend it. (except for poor mpg. I only get about 18 combined)
Good review !! Except the start stop feature that is on all subaru , If you want to stop this you have to turn it off every time you star the car?? and no button to push?? You have to go to the screen and go thru 2 or 3 different windows to get it to shut off ? And this is every time you start the car !! This to me is game changer , No subaru Outback for me !! because of this pain in the behind !! Subaru - What are you thinking ???
Ken W, the menu is Car (lower left), then Others (upper right), and then turn off auto stop/start). Yes, it is more than a simple button on the console. But it does give you something to do while the oil warms up before you mash the turbo. So there’s that!
@@bbthing68 On the new 2020, You have to turn the stop- start off every time you start the car ?? You can't turn it off permanently !! Not worth the hassle for me ???
You're in the Yukon and you say, "that really cold temperature outside. You know that kind of temperature that you get in Quebec only!" Really?! I hate to burst your bubble but the coldest temperature ever recorded in Canada was recorded in the Yukon. It was −63 °C or −81.4 °F in Snag, Yukon. So, hmmmm, as someone who has experienced over forty Yukon winters, I can tell you, you'll be lucky if any car runs in that weather. Pretty sure any fancy LCD display is gonna be frozen solid!
Passed on the 2020 for several reasons. Subaru went too heavy handed on the eyesight and technology tablet. I prefer a simple toggle for seat heating, manual radio and heat. I don't want to take my eyes off the road whenever I adjust temperature or turn on or off seat heating. Also, no reason the car drives so lackluster with 260 hp turbo charged and 277 pound foot of of torque. I am okay with the exterior but I need to be more than just okay to buy one. Subaru has to do more than tiny evolutionary changes to the exterior . I'll see what happens with the 2021 version.
Nope. I had the previous Outback with CVT. in “S” mode I outrun a Golf GTD on hilly country roads. Not once did I feel there was anything lacking in the CVT operation, no matter what mode I was in or in any road condition.
I was seriously considered a Subaru crossover 2 years ago as I never owned one before, but the Ascent I like went with CVT so I looked else where. With so many transmission options like Aisin 10speed or ZF 8-speed why Subaru went CVT for its AWD cars is mysteries to me.
Subaru gambled on a half billion dollar bet with Jatco in 2003 that cvt’s would be the future. Then the Jatco failures occurred and Subaru lost the bet. But, instead of cutting their losses, they couldn’t afford to ditch their investment so they doubled down on cvt’s. Subaru fanboys like to pretend that they’re amazing, but we all know the reliability and durability of a traditional automatic is unbeatable.
approach and departure angle is terrible.. i took my TH compass to 2nd parking @ brandywine meadows and no problem.. subarus are parked in the 1st parking coz they cant climb going to 2nd parking... they are impressed.. but dont get me wrong, subarus are good but it depends on your needs i guess
Not sure about that. No low range gear ratio, no locking diff, unimpressive approach and departure angles, all season road base tires... It's an on road 4x4 that can do mild trails. It's not an off roader.
Hey Darryl! Another time maybe! how about you write to us on Facebook and we will send you some sticker of the channel! :) Thanks and take care fellow Canadian!
CVT is not acceptable. Do not drink the Koolaid. CVT failure is higher than regular Automatics. The repair cost is around $7000. That is double most regular automatics. Eight year old car, 120,000 miles , CVT failure, Car to junkyard.

Love your videos, I would have liked to see an acceleration from stop on the road, though. Also, I am praying that they give back a turbo to the Forester again in the next year or so!!! If you know anything about this, let us know.
Accélération test coming soon
Never mind the turbo what about the diesel and the manual box ! We have a 15 Forester diesel manual and love it, I don’t want a petrol/gas engine and I don’t want a CVT box either 😡 are Subaru trying to lose sales in Europe ? 🇬🇧
I like the looks of the Forester better. Is the trunk much bigger on the Outback?
Yeah I always make my car buying decisions based on looks over functionality !!! Idiot
4:29 what the hell happened to the back of those seats xD
The seats were folded to extend the cargo space.
Exactly what i was thinking - the carpet on the back of seats looks atrocious
I have seat back protectors on mine
my roommate has one and I love it!
@@DarkNightmareUA same here 2018 Outback Premium 2.5
Hi from london Ontario, outdoor version is onyx version in US, different naming same product
So sad though Subaru went from the sporty adventure brand to trying to woo Prius drivers with a blase slow as dirt CVT pushing safety and going green.
I love my new 2020 Outback Touring XT. It is a wonderfully fun car ! And I give it 5 out of 5 stars. But I have to say I also love your accent........Russian is it ?? I give it 4 out of 5 stars. :-} Signed, Doug.
I’m pretty sure he’s French-Canadian
7:20 - the floor is not smooth - is a big disadvantage. How sleep in car? Uncomfortable.
just a little angle for your pillow :P
@@CarQuestion exactly .or. ..flip around up put your feet up 🤣
@ekim andersom are you stupid?
Add beer and liquor.... you'll sleep fine!
I had a 2016 outback 3.6R...loved the car but hated the CVT.
how many miles on it? :)
Why hate CVT?
@@jovandjukic5923 why everyone hates it. It suck
In one word: Emissions
@@TheSirviceroy
Second word , economy. The 2.4 turbo has same hp as the 3.6R but better mpg. On a side note, the new 2.5 engine has 7 more hp than the previous version. Doesn’t sound like a lot but it’s a noticeable difference.
I'm from Brazil and here we have not wagons because everybody love SUV. It's Sad
oh no, that's is sad :( Sorry Brazil!
Great family car Nice video review Subscribed
Subaru has a better AWD system than most,.... but better than my SUV? NO WAY! Love your videos!
What SUV are you driving ? :) thanks
@@Ktheodoss it's hard to beat jeep for capable AWD system.
@@Ktheodoss you have a 4wd system not an awd system.
TheJosef4334 Yes. The GC is the best of both worlds. Drives comfortably like a crossover but has true SUV capability.
the best car
It’s an on off button on the screen. You don’t have to go thru several screens to get to it.
Still no dual exhaust visible to complete its looks...
18.11.19 - we have a 2004 outback with 78,000 ks and never going to sell her
Passed on the 2020 for several reasons.
I had a 2020 and now a 2021. Hardly any different between the two. No significant changes.
Excellent video!
Thanks! Glad you like!
Must have been cold in the Yukon.
not that bad, the rain was cold! :)
wow - CVT horsepower loss has been reduced by 32% - that's huge, guess the previous version was silly inefficient.
Nope. I had the previous Outback with CVT. in “S” mode I outrun a Golf GTD on hilly country roads. Not once did I feel there was anything lacking in the CVT operation, no matter what mode I was in or in any road condition.
Did they get rid of the CVT yet? No? Never mind, let me know when they do.
Get the new Santa Fe with all terrains and forget about it!

My parents were from Winnipeg. They always said the winters there were cold "but it was a dry cold" (I always found that expression ridiculous).
Me encanta Subaru. Su Dedicación a sus automóviles.
Asi es Luis por esa razon Subaru es un auto de calidad no como las otras marcas que se dedican al diseño para vender e impresionar
It's not meant to be a serious 4WD !!!
and that is a family wagon?
Super intéressant merci!
I think the 95' is still more badass looking lol
Great video!
Thanks! Glad you like!
Not sure about that. No low range gear ratio, no locking diff, unimpressive approach and departure angles, all season road base tires... It's an on road 4x4 that can do mild trails. It's not an off roader.
Wow! You were in the Yukon? Wish I could have met you! Hello from Teslin, just south of Whitehorse. Great job bud!

@5:50 hey! lets make a simple thing much more complicated, I just dont get it... 👎😕😅😅
My explication or the système mon ami?
@@CarQuestion the complicated system from Subaru. Your review and video was top notch👍
You can adjust the temp with the buttons on the side of the screen. You don’t have to use the screen
А с механикой не осталось?
Great Vehicle
The thing about Subaru is if you have a problem with the car the parts are so expensive you are going to pay.
CVT is not acceptable. Do not drink the Koolaid. CVT failure is higher than regular Automatics. The repair cost is around $7000. That is double most regular automatics. Eight year old car, 120,000 miles , CVT failure, Car to junkyard.
My 2007 Malibu 2.2 transmission lasted 225,00. Engine gone at 270,00. Switched the engine out with a newer one with 70,000 on it.
