Val Ciobanu Subaru is a car company... not a company that specializes in screens and $100 dollar smartphones. In other words, for that kind of money, it was not their focus.

Agreed as an Outback owner he didn't quite get the whole package on why this vehicle is EVERYWHERE and I mean I'd believe they gave the car out at the DMV here in Colorado! You can adjust the tires on this outback and there is nothing it can't do, just about. Off road it does much much better than people want to believe! I rescued by brother in law on a closed/snow-packed trail in the mountains! I mean REALLY I was able to get to a jacked up F-150 Z74 or something like that. I even had guys on 4-wheelers remarking....wait you made it out here in THAT?! On jeep trails you get a LOT of looks when an outback comes strolling by but it does the job. @@timfoote6919 I agree with everything you've said related to their prevalence in CO. I'd give it a 10/10 cool factor if it came in a manual option, but without a manual I can't be fully on board so I'll give it a 7/10. Still, I consider this a great, very cool car with bonus points over many of its competitors for the balance of off road capability, fuel economy, and its longer, wagon shape makes it much better for sleeping in.

I think Doug needs to modify his score to categorize vehicles and not overall score. How are you gonna compare the fun factor of a 911 gt4 vs the fun factor of a Escalade. You really cannot. My point is adjust the score based on other vehicles in its class. Or relatively similar vehicles
That's funny, I literally just got an XC60 after planning to get a 2020 Touring XT for over 10 months. Volvo was a bit more in cost but the luxury features beat the Outback handedly. Gas milage is around the same but the real clincher was that infotainment system. It's just garbage on the Outback, which i had overnight, sub-menu after sub-menu and laggy response. The 'Sensus' system or whatever Volvo calls it is one of the better and most-responsive systems I've ever seen. I know Geely owns them but they're still Swedish and seem to be mostly left alone, they're a lot more luxurious than they were just a few years ago and seem able competitors with the German brands to me!
@@Scythan In the news last year, Volvo announced they would soon be dropping ALL internal combustion engines and instead focus on electric vehicles. Have you heard anything about this since?
Gregory Parrott They didn’t succeed? I expect the whole industry will have to adapt to electricity at some point. Toyota said to hell with batteries and is banking on fuel cells with the Mirai. Other than that I think it’s clear the industry is figuring out what the future looks like. Ideas will be thrown at the wall til something sticks. Assume only that it must be at least as easy and convenient as present as I don’t see consumers going backwards
The deal breaker on Outback is a start /stop feature, or rather the fact that it can't be permanently disabled. I rented 2 cars with this feature and I hate it.... Otherwise I could be having one on my driveway...
Where have you been? My 2014 Forester had those little lights on the mirrors. Like the previous commenter said, they light up the side of the car and the ground beneath the doors.
This is also for replacement issues. The aftermarket cannot brand those parts otherwise they can get sued (like it's going to stop them from manufacturing) So when a car mirror doesn't light up like that or any part that doesn't have a Subaru logo stamped on it, you'll know it's not an OEM part.

He kept saying it doesn't have enough features and if you check out the e-tron review, he says it is full of features. What am I missing!? The leg room in Outback is also significantly more than the e-tron. I love both my cars and I am using e-tron as a reference point just because it is a 6 year newer car, electric, costs more than twice the money, and still has a very comparable set of features.
I would like this on my cars: knowledge of when the brakes are being applied when using adaptive cruise control -- to get a feel for how much the brakes will get worn down if you use ACC alot ...
Pretty good @dougdemuro. But you forgot the #1 reason most people buy Subaru's - it's AWD system It's spectacular. Especially in snow and trail. It is standard in all models. Also bomb proof construction.
So, the Subaru logo mirror lights are actually for nighttime as you approach your car, and it lights up the door and the ground below it. I love it on mine! Super handy!
It also lets you know that it recognized the key fob without you having to dig it out of your pocket or purse. Approach the car, the light goes on and when you reach for the door handle, it unlocks. Much more helpful than expected!
10:30 I'll tell you why, we have an Impreza so I am speaking from experience When using adaptice cruise control and the car comes to a complete stop I often find myself looking at the console just to re-assure myself that the car is actually on brakes and stopped. It is a rather useful little detail and I am glad to have it!! It also lights up when the car brakes to slow down so you know it is responding to traffic ahead. Again, it is difficult to explain but it is amazing!
I have a 2016 Subaru Legacy and I agree it is a nice feature and attention to detail. It is about the right brightness too, not too annoying, but easy enough to notice without taking your eyes off the road
Forgot one of the Outback's coolest tricks/quirks/features. The hidden, built in, inward-swinging cross bars for the roof rack. Most people who own Outbacks (and a lot of people who sell them) have no idea they even exist. There's also a neat storage spot under the trunk floor for storing the cargo cover when you don't need it.
@@mateo1726 Agreed. The biggest problem we had with our roof rack (I don't remember the brand, and our nephew now has it on his Element) was wind noise. Good lord that thing was *loud*.

It's sad that Doug invented his own reasoning while he was literally at a Subaru dealer and could have asked any tech or salesperson and they'd have told him. Just lazy research like most of his reviews.
Should have kept the V6. I have a 2019 V6 and it is an awesome engine without direct injection and turbo thus no carbon sludge or oil dilution. No engine shut off feature either.
Rob Szostak yeah I at least wish it was still an option. Like way back with the 2005 model three engine options basically 2.5, 2.5XT, and 3.0 H6. The 3.6 is a wonderful engine. I like the new 2.4 XT being more powerful than the outgoing 3.6 but the 3.6 is a really smooth and good engine. Haven’t test driven the new XT but I could only hope for it to be as smooth as the 3.6.
Mr. Doug, the small light, the "decoration light" its the welcome light. It does illuminate the flooring also the open handle at the night when the driver approximately to the vehicle.
Yup, I live out in a rural area where it gets very dark. Sometimes we get home after dark and we forgot to turn on our lights outside. I bought an option package for this so we can see where we are going when we get out of the car.
Doug, I like watching your videos, but you missed some big things with this one. First, the car you had was the Onyx Edition which as others have mentioned have a dual X Mode in it. also you didn't highlight the Water resistant interior that is on that edition. I am assuming it was because you bounced back and forth between two different trim levels. Another thing you missed was the roof rack and rails. You have to pay a premium on most vehicles to get the rails and the outback tucks them away on the rack so they are there when you need them. We just lost our Honda Odyssey minivan and had to make the choice, now the kids are gone, do we become part of the SUV crowd. Well the outback fit the bill, we like wagon's /minivans and SUVs to us felt like trucks so this was a great fit. Look forward to watching more videos.
Good point Eric. X mode is a HUGE part of the outback as subaru have invested big time in that feature/technology. Missing both X mode and the rails makes this review incomplete.

@@T2roxT2 umm, remind me not to let you touch my phone camera, OK? I wasn't mentioning yet, what I think myself. I do wash the inside windows of my Subaru every month or two, being careful to avoid the EyeSight cameras, and that has worked fine both in terms of EyeSight working OK and my windows being clean, for 3 years. But I can also tell you from personal experience, EyeSight can become "blind" from one smashed insect in just the wrong place on the windshield - which does NOT turn on the dashboard "OFF" warning like frost/fog. This resolves of course once you wash the outside of the windshield, but surely it also indicates that a messy poking finger or rag on the inside could indeed mess up the system. I'm betting that Subaru corporate trusts dealer mechanics about as much as they trust owners, and that if you do touch the cameras enough to mess up the system and you "contact a Subaru dealer", their fix is to plug and play new expensive hardware, not any delicate cleaning operation. But I am just guessing.

Piece of mind so you know the person behind you sees you are slowing down.

I think Subaru straight up markets it as a crossover. The outback used to be a jacked up version of the Legacy wagon, but eventually Subaru cancelled the wagon and started calling the outback a crossover. Also I think even though it looks like a Legacy wagon, starting last generation, the Outback cabin is an inch or two taller, so technically you could argue it is not simply a Legacy station wagon

You needed to mention the great 4 wheel drive. I drive this car in Mammoth. They sometimes do not plow the roads and I end up driving thru un-plowed roads and driving down hills that are shear ice. Other cars and SUV's with 4 wheel drive are spinning out and my Subaru goes thru it. This car gets me to where I am going. The only way my Subaru is stuck is when the road is closed. Many skiers and people who live in places with snow and bad weather swear by Subaru's.
I lived in Japan for a while..."see you" is very Japanese and kind of cool! Great that you pointed this out - good stuff and thanks for the awesome videos!

Probably because android auto and Apple carplay are becoming pretty standard these days, so I guess manufacturers feel there's not a lot of value in investing in their own nav.

Agreed as an Outback owner he didn't quite get the whole package on why this vehicle is EVERYWHERE and I mean I'd believe they gave the car out at the DMV here in Colorado!

At ~8 1/2" of ground clearance, it's got a much more commanding view of the road than any sedan, but competitive view as other CUV's. Probably less than a RAV-4, but not by much.
Outback actually has more at 8.7"; current RAV4 is 8.4". I've had fwd family sedans with 6" clearance on snow tires and all seasons up mountain roads in blizzards; anything more is really not needed; unless you are actually offroading or very rural, if you get stuck, it's your fault.
@@bradkerr2798 I was so close to getting the new RAV4 but opted for the Outback instead. You're right, the Outback has .3" more ground clearance than the RAV4, but in my test drive, I really did sit higher off the ground in the RAV than the Subi. What is that attributed to? Larger wheels or lift? (Help, I'm stupid)

I own a 2021 outback. The brake lights go on in the instrument cluster center screen car image because the adaptive cruise control can slow itself without you applying the brakes and you may not know if your brake lights are on or not since you are slowing down but you are not physically pressing the brakes. Piece of mind so you know the person behind you sees you are slowing down.
"this screen is so great"
Narrator: "yet in reality, it wasnt great, it wasnt great at all"
The slow response of the Navi screen is a deal breaker.
Yeah, I don't mind the climate control being on the screen that much, since it is largely automatic and you don't adjust it that much. But the constant lag on the entire screen all the time would be a deal breaker for me.
Honestly I have never even used an in car navigation system over my phone. I have an xt and I think the infotainment is pretty good.
At least you have apple car play & andriod auto, those respond much faster than the factory navigation
How many people really use the navigation system in their car though? At least in the classes the Outback competes in.
@@zachle591 I leave it set to aux/bluetooth at my favorite volume and pretty much never touch it again. I got navigation and music on my phone. In case I don't have signal, I have offline maps and music downloaded. My phone support even covers half the screen lmao. This massive touchscreen is just bragging rights, there's no reason to have a screen this big. Id rather have an extra cup holder, a bigger glove box, or more leg room.
"SUV practicallity without having an SUV"
That's what every wagon ever is about.
Hell it's even more practical
@J Thorsson Human emotional isn't rational, especially those of the uninformed.
@Mike E more like why sacrifice a lower center of mass, better aerodynamics lower weight and better fuel efficiency?
@T R Outbacks are worth their reputation. There are lots of places in CO where you see the Pilots and Rav4s parked miles below the official trailheads but at the top you see pickups, Jeeps, and Subies. I put a 2" lift kit on mine and I've made it up Imogene Pass where 4runners and Wranglers reign, and at the same time I can get 30mpg on my daily work commute with space to haul stuff in the back. Completely was worth the purchase.
J Thorsson. I’m failing to see how SUVs can’t properly off-road? Particularly since my 4Runner has been a beast and utterly reliable in everything I’ve thrown at it (40,000 miles on logging roads, seasonal roads, off-road, etc after driving to worksites).... I can see your comment making more sense if you were referring to crossovers and the like, but a body on frame SUV is just as capable off-road as any pickup of the same model year. Plus, you can sleep in the cab with your gear, dogs, etc.

Doug didn't get this cheque from Subaru I guess.
It's still amazing that Subaru took a station wagon, which people mostly quit buying, and made the Outback from it.
It's still a mystery why people stopped buying station wagons. Anyone who owned a station wagon knows how useful they are.
@@shawn576 Minivans have even more space than wagons, but they became uncool soccer-mom vehicles. They were replaced by cool-looking go-anywhere 4WD SUVs
@@shawn576 Same reason people mostly quit buying minivans: image
@@shawn576People buy what they're sold. Wagons typically have a smaller wheelbase than SUVs, which means stricter fuel economy standards in the US. Selling bigger cars makes it easier for the manufacturers to hit CAFE numbers. So that's what they push.
We're buying bigger cars because of environmental regs. It's ridiculous.

Doug no. THIS, not all the others you've labeled as such, is a "crossover". FFS
Exactly, this stopped being a wagon 10 years ago
@@ge8198 no it technically is a wagon. In front of the b pillar it is almost identical to the legacy minus the bumper and grill which helps to define it as a wagon because it shares the legacy platform.
@@Hallowsaw it's over 7 inches taller than a Legacy though, making it appear and drive like a crossover
The Outback invented the "crossover". It was always been that.
@@uzogsi the outback did not invent the crossover, it was always always a wagon which have been around for decades. The origins of the Crossover came about in the mid to late 90s with the releases of the Rav4, CRV, and Lexus RX300
Strangely you got a few things wrong on this one:
-the mirror lights shine on the ground to provide light in the dark.
-you can set your climate and seat temp from a smartphone app. I think thats why they didnt use physical buttons.
-the rear hatch thing will detect your elbow or body if you’re near it so you can open it even if your hands are full.
Hot take: the outback is no longer a station wagon. It’s become so bloated that it’s now a crossover.
eh that's not really a hot take, more like fact lmao
I think Subaru straight up markets it as a crossover. The outback used to be a jacked up version of the Legacy wagon, but eventually Subaru cancelled the wagon and started calling the outback a crossover. Also I think even though it looks like a Legacy wagon, starting last generation, the Outback cabin is an inch or two taller, so technically you could argue it is not simply a Legacy station wagon
It says light truck on my registration
I mean, a crossover is basically just a lifted, beefed up wagon. I own a 2002 Outback, and it's kind of always been a crossover.
A landboat
“See you” is Subaru colloquial for “Later alligator” 😂
1. They're called approach lights. They come on when you walk up to it with the key in your pocket.
This car is my 1st experience with Subaru and I'll tell you, I'm having a ball in it. My mind is blown.

Zach Reynolds a lot of car manufactures do this “black out” look to cars. but in reality it looks like they took the normal hubcaps/wheels and plastidipped them in black. it doesnt look good. when i was getting a new civic this black colored wheels for the hatch were so hideous to me. maybe its because its a car thats trying to looks sporty that isnt sporty at all
I love my outback too. It's been so reliable and I'm extremely comfortable in it. I agree with other peoples sentiment.

Why does map still sucks on these cars in 2019? Like smartphones can do it why can't cars?

Probably because android auto and Apple carplay are becoming pretty standard these days, so I guess manufacturers feel there's not a lot of value in investing in their own nav.
