    I don't want to sound like a Luddite, but I would much rather have more physical buttons, and less screen. I don't even want to know what it will cost to replace that screen in the event that if fails after the warranty period.

      Amen, its a terrible design to put basic functions in a screen.

      I agree. Having a display filled with icons that control everything from the entertainment system to the climate control is a terrible distraction. Proof of this is whenever these commercials show the use of the display/icons, they always do it while the vehicle is STOPPED. They never show use of the display/icons while the vehicle is at highway speeds. If they did, the video would then show them hitting something. (Notice he stops the vehicle at 12:47 to dink with the display!)

      I have the 2018 with the 8" screen and controls are still manual. They should have stopped there and improved on that. I so agree.

      @SnowBoarder&Skier I didn't buy one unfortunately for me, and Subaru. I have been a long time Subaru fan and owner, but their priorities have changed. It's fine if you are just leasing, but I enjoyed Subaru because you could drive them until the wheels fell off. Speaking of Volvo, most of their buyers are indeed lease buyers. They are not concerned with the over implementation of screens. I myself love tech. I build, and tinker with computers, and enjoy having a great cellphone in my pocket. These aren't 30 + k investments that I rely on to get myself to work, and back. We should all be painfully aware of the short life cycle of tech like this by now. It just does't add up.

    I'm younger, and I love tech, but I'm honestly tired of seeing all these giant screens. Don't get me wrong, I want a big screen, but all I'm going to use it for is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I just don't want to have to take my eyes off the road to see where to touch a screen to adjust the air conditioning, and I don't need all the distracting other UI around CarPlay/Android Auto. I'm loving the 10.25 screens in Kia, with physical controls for AC. That's the big screen setup I'm here for

    I got a 2018 Outback premium 2.5 with all the options and I myself personally dont feel like the base 2.5 4cylnder is slow, now granted I haven't felt how it feels like to accelerate when its fully loaded with 5 passengers and their luggage but so far with just me going to work on a mix of city and hwy the power feels just right, in fact it feels plenty fast, sometimes when I turn into a hwy onramp I step on it and by the time I'm ready to merge left with the traffic, I be doing like over 106mph! Sure I wanted the more powerful and faster engine but it's not what i really needed, I needed a spacious midsize AWD offroad utility vehicle that got really good (for the size) fuel economy, the fact that it feels and drives like a regular passenger car is a big bonus considering the incredible 8.7 inches of ground clearance for those offroad situations.

    With the introduction of the Ascent last year and the year after year growth in size of the Forester I was wondering if the Outback would be squeezed out by other Subaru vehicles from both above and below. Thankfully, that doesn't seem to be the case, especially for the turbo XT model.
    I wasn't impressed with the 2.4L turbo in the Ascent. Almost all brands have standard of optional V6 engines in their 3 row crossovers. (The Mazda CX-9 is the exception.) And the same is true of the smaller two row midsize crossovers. Only the Outback and the Santa Fe limit the engine choice to a four cylinder turbo in the "tweener" category between 188" and 192" in length. There's a reason for that. In vehicles with curb weights over two tons and weighing close to 5000 lbs or more when loaded with fuel, passengers, and gear/luggage a small displacement more highly stressed four cylinder turbocharged engine has a lot of weight to propel. Performance may be adequate but smooth power delivery and especially durability remain issues to consider. I remain skeptical about the Ascent (and for that matter the CX-9) compared to its rivals.
    On the other hand, the Outback XT with the same engine as the Ascent has a curb weight nearly 700 lbs less. Add fuel, passengers, and gear and the difference increases to 900 lbs or more. (Remember the Outback seats five, not 7 or 8.) That's the equivalent of cramming three NFL lineman in the Outback's cargo space! Both performance and durability benefit compared to the Ascent. In fact, early reviews suggest only the Edge ST and some versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee are quicker to 60 mph.
    Some will find the fact that the Subaru offers only a CVT in the Outback (and the Ascent) a major drawback. (In the entire midsize crossover class only the Nissan Murano imposes the same restriction.) I'm no fan of CVT's and adding faux gears and paddle shifters strike me as kinda silly. But I have to admit that CVT's from various manufacturers have improved a lot in the last decade or so. Subaru has apparently done a good job with theirs. And given the weight difference between the Outback and the Ascent I'd guess it's more appropriate in the lighter vehicle.
    All in all, I'm impressed with the new Outback. My wife and I dropped it from our shopping list when we purchased a "tweener" size crossover last year primarily because it was so little changed since we considered it six years before. If we were shopping again in the near future that would no longer be the case.

    Just got the 2023, some changes, Subaru changed the buttons on the steering wheel. The volume button is no longer that toggle, it's lower down, a bit confusing but not something you can't get used to after a few months. CarPlay and Android auto is now wireless, you don't have to use a cord anymore. There's a charger it slides in horizontal rather than the vertical you see here, and it fits my iPhone 14 Max Pro. The fog lights are now round which is the way they should have been. As for the 2020 and up on the 260HP engine, it rides like a $100,000 car, big difference between that and my 2020 Forester. Also recently had a problem in an area with no cell service and the Tom Tom (standard on the 260HP) pulled through. The hands free on the lift gate though is finicky, you have to hold your hand in front of it for 5 seconds, eventually you give up and just push the button. You can buy an aftermarket CD player for around $250 if you're really into CD's and came from a Forester, one of the things I miss.

      True...but since the 11.6 screen models will have auto climate controls which has physical button for temp which in turn will automatically lower and increase fan based on how the temp is set, but I understand about not having total physical controls.

    I still kinda like the new Subaru Forester more; however, I can see why folks still enjoy and prefer the lower Subaru Outback. I like how comprehensive and focused this review and presenter is. Very good emphasis on passenger space and comfortable without glossing over the important details, and yet it doesn’t feel like he’s artificially extending the watch time in order to stretch ad revenue.
    My only gripe with this car is the high price when fully spec-ed out. However, I suppose this is an issue inherent in almost all Subaru Dealerships these days. In doing so, it really does make you question the value per dollar and forces consumers to seriously compare and consider cheaper Honda’s, Toyota’s, Hyundai’s, and Kia’s. I personally do not mind Subaru’s CVTs any more, because like Honda they have seemed to prove they can create reliable and efficient CVT transmissions that won’t leave their owners stranded. Nissan’s and select Toyota CVTs have still yet to win back consumer confidence from those that are in the know.

    I have a 2010 3.6r. Its an amazing car and i'm sad to see Subaru going away from the 6 cylinder. I'd have to be really convinced in a test drive that the 2.4 Turbo is a better power plant. Also, would the 2.4 Turbo be as reliable as the 3.6r, or will I have to constantly check on my head gasket?

    • @bbthing68
      @bbthing68 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Burnley, good questions. I used to own a used 6-cyl Volvo wagon. It had the same engine block as the Peugeot and the infamous DeLorean. But Volvo soon dropped it, and even the Volvo dealer didn’t want to work on it.
      One time they changed a water pump, and over the weekend my battery would die. I put an ammeter on it and found out it was drawing an amp. I took it back to the dealer and they tried to tell me it was the clock. Yeah, a 12 watt clock. Nice try, bozos.
      So getting an engine that they’re discontinuing might end up being more problematic than a newer engine that has been around the block (so to speak) in the Ascent as well as in their race cars.
      Oh, well. Since they’re going for mileage, the turbo 4 makes more sense. And since the torque curve is relatively flat from 2K rpm that’s not too bad.

    For some reason the look of both the outback and the Forester appeal to me. As for the CVT I haven't yet drove a vehicle with a CVT so I can't really speak from personal experience.From what I've seen online it seems like they should be pretty good on a scenic trail.I don't have plans for Rock Crawling but would like to get a little bit off the beaten path.With the fuel economy they talk about maybe a nice Sunday drive or overnight camping trip would be more affordable for some. As for the camera's with face recognition,no thanks. If I was gonna get one I'd get a trim level without that.

Went a total of 42 days without my car. It was a Lemon. Even the district service manager told me to contact Subaru Customer service to get a full refund, as they could not figure out what is wrong with the car. After months of being given the run around, Subaru customer service did not refund my money as they should have. I traded my car in, still under warranty, still not fixed. This to me compares w the small to midsize cuteutes. Edge murano etc and below. And I'd rather have the Sub than any of those. But let's not kid anyone saying this competes w a runner that is way more capable, can tow, and is just a totally different genre. A wagon suv and truck SUV are not competitors.

      I bought a loaded Outback years ago and it burned oil like crazy! Dealer acted like they have never heard about the issue even though you could google it and read all about it from so many frustrated consumers! Looking back I would have felt differently about the issue if Subaru had taken responsibility. Love the Outback, but could probably not take that chance again. Traded it for a new Toyota 4Runner which has been awesome!!

      Martin R The legal case just got settled in 2016. I think we need to be a few more years down the road before we decide that it's not an issue anymore. But judging from these Subaru owners, it's not very promising:

      And come on, Martin. I like a Subie's off-payment and inclement weather performance, But they're not MONSTERS off road. Wranglers, Defenders, and G-Series Mercedes are monsters.
      Subarus are adventurous, throw-around, all weather road cars that can get pushed a little beyond. Off road monsters they are not.

It is still great on the beach and better than any jeep but if you go down into a short mudhole, don't expect it to just climb up the other side if you have a steep embankment. It cuts power, something my 2005 did not do.

    It's beautiful, but I hate the idea of climate control integrated into the touch screen. I'm always fiddling with that on a road trip, and the idea that I cannot memorize the tactile feel and location of the controls, and I might have to fight with a finicky screen, is almost a deal breaker. I might have to snag a high-end 2018 or 19. (I just rented a 2018 with the 2.5 liter engine and it was fine.)

    • @kevinW826

      Basement Berean same here. I know the base models have twin screens with buttons, but I have yet to see what the dash looks like.

    • @tpolerex7282
      @tpolerex7282 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m with ya that I prefer a couple of rotary dials and hard buttons for climate control but at least it does have hard switches for temp on both sides and always on fan speed and AC (or auto, it’s customizable) on the dedicated touch screen area. You tend not to fiddle with much more than the temp, fan speed and AC on/off too much once you are settled in so it seems livable. Also have the hard buttons for both front and rear defogger/defrost. Of course if the screen goes kerplunk you are f*cked.
      @Kevin Wright the base model with the smaller twin screens has the exact same set up, no additional hard climate control buttons and actually a smaller area of the bottom touch screen available for the always on parts of it.

    • @kevinW826
      @kevinW826 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tpolerex I was hoping the base model was setup differently. Oh well. It’s still lacking hard buttons to change the direction of the airflow from feet to front. So if the system resets every time the car is turned off than people will have to wait for the system to load and respond to their input. That sucks in -30 degree winter when the touch screens will freeze up and the system blows cold air. Yes you can get warm air eventually, but until it is blowing hot air, you are going to freeze. And trying to get the seat warmers, the window defroster, and the heated steering wheel going is going to be a bitch as they are in the touch screen.

    • @tpolerex7282
      @tpolerex7282 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @kevinW826

    I think all the reviews are missing the point of Outback. It is only AWD at this price range. Even Rav4 AWD goes over $32K. Ford Ranger with 4x4 option is $32K. You can get base Outback with AWD for $5K less. Also should go over why it doesn't have spare tire. And that AWD is not for everyone. You need to be educated about AWD before owning one.

    This vehicle has a CVT. CVT is not a acceptable liability. Therefore the car is not acceptable. No car with a CVT is even remotely acceptable due to transmission failure rate. Even if the transmission lasts as many miles as a traditional automatic or standard, (which I doubt) the cost is double to repair. A car with 120,000 miles with a $7000 repair or a car with 120,000 with a $3500 repair. Not a acceptable liability.
