She got that story a little wrong (in addition to a bunch of other things). The backflip was banned yes, but because any jump had to be landed on one foot. This is why Sonya was like "bet" and threw it in their face. So, she did it because TECHNICALLY it was legal so long as she landed it on one foot, but the refs were like "this isn't what we meant"
A back flip is showy, but it’s not that impressive. Plenty of skaters do it in shows. They’re nothing next to triple jumps. The sensationalism around Surya’s backflip was a bit ridiculous.
The backflip was banned not because it was too “show biz,” but because it’s incredibly dangerous. One wrong move and a skater can be paralyzed or even killed. The ISU did not want to encourage practice of this dangerous move.
Can you produce the list of skaters, who were or have been injured, doing the back flip? Doing any jump, containing multiple rotations, on slippery ice is dangerous especially, those pairs lifts. The ISU banned the move to spite Surya Bonaly one of the greatest technical figure skaters in the history of ladies figure-skating. Bonaly did quads long before everyone but she gets no mention and no credit. A gymnast is expert at the acrobatic moves, like jumping. Gymnastic training helps perfect body & feet position helpful when achieving jump & spin rotations even for achieving pointed toes. Gymnasts have fast twitch muscles and superb choreographic training that produces power & grace. "They wanted to keep her element out of the sport." That's the way one anonymous judge put it.
@@ctruth6185 Uhmmm. wasn't it banned long before Bonaly even showed up in the figure skating world. One reason why it is banned is because it is indeed dangerous. Especially with the ruling of 10% bonus if a jump is done in the last half, more skaters will do it. And there will be a time when one skater will fall to his/her head or spine. I also believe that figure skating the meeting point of athleticism and elegance. There's no elegance in doing backflips. I strongly believe that. Lastly, technically speaking, how can you judge backflip? How should the takeoff be? Everyone who does it are in the flat edge and falls down on their flat edge/s as well. How should it be scored? For a backflip on a very slippery ice, one can only just rotate once. The toeloop, salchow, loop, flip, lutz and axel all uses the blade for its take off (in addition with a certain acceleration and force) but backflips only uses force and nothing more. It's nothing but a move in the gymnastics. There are a lot of problems with that technique. Even it just become a part of a skater's step sequence, it will just be an unnecessary danger as step sequence focuses more on edges. Though it is cool to see in exhibitions! I won't deny that.
No because they are pros if you you see TH-cam videos with skates doing flips on ice it ALWAYS says ‘never try this at home unless you are taught by a professional or you are supervised by a professional
All of the Olympic level skaters can do a backflip. It’s hardly as difficult as the triple jumps they perform. Scott Hamilton and Kurt Browning did backflips in their post Olympic careers all the time.
Hey!! I started ice skating when I was about 14-15. If you push yourself and delicate yourself, you can really do amazing. I ended up being in the top 10 on the east coast in a few “finalist” competitions (not giving actual names of competitions, for privacy) with only two years of prior training! You’ll do great Charlotte!
Well you are not gonna start competitive ice skating at 19, that's for sure. Your body needs to be "modified" if you will to be able to do all of this. At a certain age that just does not work anymore.
The skirt rule is stupid because as soon as they start skating, and in the case of ice dance and pairs, get lifted or thrown, the skirt flips up anyway. It only covers them when they're skating in a straight line and doing nothing else.
@@xXJaneRoseXx because she wasn't your typical swan lake elegant dancer that judges prefered to see. She put accent on her strenght and atleticism rather than grace and the aesthetics
The thing about the 2 Russians receiving a ban for doping is a little misleading. Elena Berezhnaya used the wrong cold medicine (this was right after Andreea Raducan so she should have known better) and Yuri Larionov took a banned diuretic. The video made it sound like they were on roids or something.
elena's cold medicine was prescribed by a doctor but i believe she failed to inform isu as per procedure. both she and yuri suffered enough tho, elena and anton were stripped of their european titles and had to miss worlds while yuri and vera were stripped of their jgpf title and banned from competition for 18 months. honestly this "all russian athletes dope" narrative needs to die already

(Coming from an actual figure skater) The diet isn’t because they’re self conscious(at least most of the time), it’s because figure skaters can’t fluctuate in weight since gaining or loosing weight throws them off their centre of balance and makes it harder to jump and spin
I have a question then, does body physique matter in figure skating, like in terms of what weight class you are in, or is it mostly about maintaining a specific weight?
@@degilz7629 your size doesn't matter much as long as your ankles are strong enough to support you during jumps and stuff. in competition there is judgment from people like with any sport, there's a reason you don't see plus size women competing. the ice skating community is toxic in that way like any other sport

I’m a figure skater too and my coaches (and parents) always said “you can’t do this” or “you can’t do that”. I wanted to do ballet and when I told my parents they immediately said well your going to have to chose, like wth!? I can do lyrical but I can’t do ballet!? Also I wanted to do soccer because I loved it, they said no. They always said “don’t do that your going to gain muscles” . (I still ice skate because it’s my passion but I do it for fun and not competitively, also sorry this turned into a rant-)
Ty! It’s like: ummm... this is a competition... they have to have a standard to compare them by. If someone spun 12 times in a comp and someone else jumped 12 times then how’re you going to compare that?
The jumping rule brings to mind Tara Lipinski winning gold because she did 3 triple-triple combo jumps. Other than jumping, her skating was forgettable.
Pretty Reckless this is true I am a figure skater that actually is going to nationals this year so I would think I know that this rule for female figure skaters is bogus
The fact that Surya did her backflip while both a figure-skater and having performed as a gymnast for a long time, she knew what she was doing. While yes, it takes away points, she knew the risks. That said, falling on ice would hurt WAY worse than the mat that gymnasts use for floor routines...
People don’t understand. Surya Bonaly was a champion in France at power tumbling before she ever touched the ice. Ice Skating was bonus round for her. There is a Netflix documentary which was painful and brilliant. I never fit into my sport either, but when I was little, and saw her do her layout step out on ice, I knew anything was possible. I’m a boy and have a gold medal in rhythmic gymnastics now. Surya is my forever hero. 🐼♥️🏆
It's an international level competition where it is known to once in a while have a hyper drugged athlete. I don't find it strict, it make sense, doesn't make it any less annoying though.
I’m a figure skater and I know these rules. You almost got it all but you should’ve mentioned that there are short and long programs and they have separate requirements.
I know right! To say that there’s a “rule of 3 spins” is inaccurate, that is a requirement for a short program and not always long ones. Also this video was made right after Rostelecom Cup, which I can tell was a huuuge inspiration for this video. So the research they made is mainly limited to the requirements of Rostelecom Grand Prix.
I mean again it depends.. Some kpop idols trained for 1-3 years others trained for 7-12 years. And then there are dancers whose training period doesn't stop (kpop idol's tehnically doesn't too) but for both.. They emprove.. They both have talents... And yee
1. This sport (at least to me) is supposed to teach discipline. It’s not the competition ya how people react to it 2. I have been skating since I was 4 (16 now) and this is mostly true. Many skaters love this sport and many don’t really care about the requirements. They just skate for fun and to enjoy the movements
Elena Berezhnaya tested positive for an ingredient on the banned substance list that happened to be in the cold medicine she was taking. By omitting that information, you made it sound like she was a doper who was caught taking a performance enhancing drug, when that wasn’t the case. She just wasn’t careful reading the ingredients in the cold medicine. That’s a big difference.
Berezhnaya stated that she had taken cold medication containing pseudoephedrine as found in medications such as Sudafed approved by a doctor but had failed to inform the ISU as required.
@DAVE ADAMSudafed by itself is not a performance-enhancing drug. I have used it for several illnesses, as instructed by my doctors. Once I had a respiratory/ear infection that was so severe that my eardrum retracted, and if I hadn't taken the medicine, I would now be deaf in that ear. Sudafed is an ingredient in meth/speed, but on it's own it's not the same thing. Yeast is an ingredient in alcohol, but yeast alone does not make a person drunk. In fact the Sudafed made me dizzy and impaired my ability to function.
So sad to see Yelena Berezhnaya even mentioned in such a context. Somehow everyone is fine with Norwegian biathlonists competing under banned substances due to "medical exceptions" - apparently, it's too hard to find good biathlonists in Norway without asthma. Berezhnaya suffered such a severe brain injury 6 years before 2002, that in the beginning she was unlikely to survive, and when she did, no one believed she could ever get back on ice. She had to learn to walk, talk and read all over again. And she got back to skating and became a champion. And if anyone thinks it's all due to some banned substances - they should think again.
Kayla Kemp Well one of my friends invited me to go skating with her and I had a blast, it then turned into a weekly thing. Then I started the basic skills learn to skate program and then I just kept going. My advice to you if you want to start is start going skating and get to the point where you're confident on the ice. Then sign up for basic skills( every rink that I've ever been to has it) by the time you finish basic skills you can ask one of the coaches where to go next. Be aware that figure skating is a very expensive sport, with the cost of skates(although you don't necessarily need them when you start out), sharpenings, ice time, lessons, etc etc. And it's pretty time consuming. I'm not trying to convince you out of it I'm just trying to inform you. Although I'm saying all of this assuming that you want to start skating Soo.. lol sorry for the extremely long paragraph I just started typing and didn't stop😂
At 6:10 your costume can hit the ice if it’s still attached to your costume, the costumes must not have any detachable details and if they have any detachable details, it can result in deduction. The only time your costume can’t touch the ice is when a piece of the costume fall off and falls onto the ice. For example You can slide on the ice you your pants (like in a spider lunge) but you have to be on one blade or it’s edge to count it as a valid move and not a “fall” that can result in deductions Also moves like backflips, long pauses or laying on the ice are banned but please clarify that it’s only banned in competition but can be used in galas exhibitions and shows
yeah i agree, the only one i can see as like “crazy strict” is the no two piece costume rule, but even with that, you’re raising your arms up a lot so it makes sense
@@Kamila-eb9pz it has its pros and cons but I always think that make up is battle paint. Also useful when giving more drama to the performance. But it is a hassle to always wear makeup

@@overgrownkudzu I mean, jumpsuits are allowed. Also pretty sure you can wear skating shorts. I think you can wear a longer skirt than most girls wear, if memory serves right it’s okay to wear a dress that’s long as long as it doesn’t touch the floor.
So many of the facts are incorrect or unclear. For example the beats or style of music goes only for the rhythm dance in ice dance and lyrics were allowed long before the Winter Olympics of 2018. Also, they mixed up the programs, short program has only 3 jumps it's the free that has 7. And just as a heads up...figure skating includes 4 different sports so when talking about the rules they should not be generalised because there are different rules in the different events.
Thank you. I consider myself a fairly avid fan, yet, I had no idea what she was talking about when she mentioned the themed music. I only watch singles.
And even I did single figure skating for 6 years and I would help checking the ice between competitions for the synchronized skating and there was no rules about glitters on the ice !
“Themed music” is like ANY other dance related thing! •dancing- you need a song to dance to •gymnastics- you need songs to give the audience a show •even at the circus! All acts need song themes, either funny, intense, aggression- many!
the music rule when the committee picks the theme only applies for ice dance. single skaters and pairs skaters are allowed to skate to pretty much whatever they want
Holy hell, did you actually get anyone who knew anything about skating to do this video or did you just find a bunch of random googles and stick them together? Because for starters, the vast majority of these rules apply to ALL divisions, not just the women. The music tempo is only for ice dance, not for singles or pairs. Oh, and I'm side-eying your "only two Russian skaters have tested positive" remark. You could have said "only two skaters" but why miss a chance to have a pop at the Russians, amirite? (Particularly given one of them was cold medicine.) The ladies do seven jumps but SO DO THE MEN. They actually have the same number of jumps now and the same program length.
sounds like "I once read an article and watched American nationals for 5 minutes let's make a video". Plus the question at the end if this sport was too competitive is.... weird. Is this COMPETITIVE sport with PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES competing too hard? For whom too hard? I can skate forward at close to zero speed, so for me it's too hard and the ISU should definitely lower their standars so I can compete at the.... slow foward skating event.
Figure skating is amazing, once you’re in your element you feel so free and happy! I’m a self taught figure skater -previously a dancer so it was easier for me.
Pink Sniper Also that part of the video was only for Ice Dance. It is a type of skating based on ballroom dance so of course the right tempo is needed for a certain type of dance
I don't know why this needed the title of "Female Skater" most of these rules are for all skaters, and the men have rules as well for requirements and costumes. A little more research should have gone into the "rules" as well
Sophie Lucine Chakmakjian Phillips true that. Also the fact that when they mention tests they show how a competition is scored with the pdf not a test itself 🙈
As a former figure skater (had to quit when I was 17 because of a knee injury), I can confirm that some of these things are very misinterpreted by this video. And they also apply to male skaters.
Why include the need for good diet and training time as "rules"? Any athlete would need to abide by a training plan to succeed. And are these skaters technically professional?
They're actually not. The Olympic skaters are all "amateurs". They have to get special clearance from their federation to skate in shows and earn money that way. Otherwise, it's just the prize money they earn...and the prize money's not great.
A lot of the things in this video are very misleading or simply false. For example, dress rules are not just for female figure skaters. There is a similar dress rule for men. They have to wear trousers, and they're not allowed to wear tights because nobody wants to see their bulges. The part about the Russian skaters testing positive for banned substances is very misleading. They tested positive because of medication they took for other things, not because they took banned substances to cheat. The video should not have left that out. There are no special rules for food in figure skating. ANY athlete will watch what they eat in order to perform better. For the 'gruelling' training hours, again there is no rule. As in any sport, if you want to reach the top you better train a lot. That's not a rule, that's just the way it is. In every sport. The number of jumps allowed for women is the same for men. It is not a gender-specific rule, as it is implied in the video. The Short Program does not allow seven jumps. It allows three jump elements, one of which a combo, so four jumps. There are not six types of jumps but seven. The Euler is allowed as a second jump in a three jump combo in order to get on the correct edge for a Flip or a Salchow as the third jump. The video also implies that touching the ice and falling are the same thing. They are not. Touching the ice is only seen as a fall if the skater has most of their weight supported by their hands instead of the blades. Many skaters deliberately touch the ice as part of their choreography. That doesn't cost a point. Finally, the Washington Post screenshot about the themed music literally contradicts what the narrator is claiming. Themed music was picked for ice dance, not singles or pairs skating. This is a really dumb mistake.
But they love to see women's half covered butt, like Katarina Witte did ages ago. After a lift routine by a couple the woman's pant came flying up, to reveal half a naked butt. She couldn't even take her hand to pull it down. Must have felt terrible...a wedge It was ridiculous. Trying to get more points? That's been around for eons. I was glad to hear the judges come out with: "Cover your butt, no more thongs." Gee wizz!!!
There are a lot of rules for men, but this channel likes to promote women and make it seem like everyone hated women and makes it harder for them for no reason, which is stupid. As a woman, I think they are going overboard.
@@heyitskate7747 In case you haven't heard about the world. Sexism is a THING and its EVERYWHERE so yeah life is harder for women. But from a business perspective, women are just the larger target audience so they're going to make videos about and for them more than men.
During my 5th grade, while watching kids in a skating rink it made me inspire to take up figure skating as a sport for only an entertainment basis but my parents won't allow me. Fast forward in 2014 after watching Sochi Olympics, I wanted to fight for this by losing more weight by eating lighter meals like oatmeal and more dance workouts in which I did but I was fat-shamed. I hope I could do this while I still can while being an adult but this figure skating made my body more stronger and confident in my own skin... That's the reason why I was hooked on figure skating because of those figure skaters I admired inspired me to fight for what I love and what I want to do and work hard for it.
I grew up in the sport. I had 7 coaches and private ice every M-F from 4am to 8am and on the weekends i trained from 1pm to 6pm. I also did ballet 2 times a week and 4 aerobic classes a week. I regularly went 2 days without food. The body image thing is so very true and i competed back when judges had NO oversight and even BEFORE you started your program, if they didn't like the way you looked they would give you a bad score!!! Regardless of how you skated!!! Not kidding!!! I still struggle with food issues to this day and i hate the way i look. I am never thin enough or smart enough or talented enough.
because no woman yet was capable of jumping quads consistently. imo ISU should minimize the amount of quads in the free skate as well, until we get a better idea of what they do to women's health
@@hannibaljustincase9985 Agree. So many young girls do quads nowadays, without knowing how it will affect them when they grow older and their bodies begin to mature..
some rules stated here are incorrect. for example, though the jump requirements are correct, the short program has 3 jump passes instead of 7. the themed music rule only applies to ice dance, which is kind of ironic bc a video of evgenia's nocturne featured in the explanation, but nocturne is no where near latin style. also to mention, no it was not 2018 where lyrics were allowed. it literally says in the passage that it was allowed since 2014-2015. probably should change some of these explanations but for a sport that tbh is underrated (:/), pretty good job (also im a figure skater).
The hair spray works for the pins in the hair styles. When I Danced as a kid, rather than using hair spray on my hair it was used on what I was putting into me hair. It helps keep the pins and hair bands in place. I know some of the older girls would also use it on the practice gear and sometimes their costumes, for the same reason the ice skaters do. It kept the costumes in place.
The backflip was banned because of safety. Surya Bonaly landed her flip on one foot because the rule stated that you cannot perform a backflip on ice by landing on two feet. She thought that this would heighten her chances of not getting a deduction.
I was very surprised to see how informative this video was, as a figure skater I always go into videos like these expecting to see some crazy exaggeration of isu rules but these were all pretty true
Yep, it makes our sport sound impossible. Like yeah if you want to compete at the Olympics, you may train like crazy and diet, but for most of us, we’re pretty normal. Our sports just unique.
Same!! I’ve been skating since I was 4 years old (so 9 years) and I know that not all skaters have to follow these rules. A lot of us also can just eat whatever we want, we don’t have to go on a crazy diet.
@phantomcide this is inaccurate due to how it seems to show that our sport is really harsh. Some of the rules they mention are just basic given ones, like dresses and the amount of jumps/time of the music. However, a fair amount of these rules are based more off of if you want to try going to the Olympic/want to be a national/international skater. I’m a figure skater and I compete, but I’m not planning on going to nationals, since I know I don’t have what it exactly takes. The rule about only eating certain foods applies more to those wishing to compete internationally/nationally. I don’t care about what foods I eat and I still compete, but for people who wish to compete pro(like there’s a difference between a professional skater and a competitor). They also talk about strict training hours, which again, apply mainly to people who are serious about competing/ compete regularly at one of the qualifying levels, and even then, there are huge intensity levels within these training styles and amounts. Overall the video makes it sound like us skaters have to give up a lot to skate, and live vary intense life styles, which is mainly only true to those wishing to compete internationally or among the best nationally. This makes the rest of us skaters sound crazy, which therefore makes us feel like this video is inaccurate. Does that sorta make sense? That skating world is complex and hard to explain. Sorry if any of this sounds confusing.
yea precisely!! they are different! I don't think Alina Zagitova is a professional cause she is still competing. She can only perform in shows during the off season.
Rule #1 is incorrect. You were no deducted points (technically) if you wore a unitard or body suit. However - since they were not favored; judges could use the freedom of the artistic score to deduct points. This however can also occur if a judge does not like your hair, costume, makeup, or just your face. It’s pronounced “Vitt” not “Witt”. Practice is 6 hours a day - 12 months a year. We work harder than most athletes and train more than professional athletes. On top of skating - we do all of these extra classes listed.
the "substances cant rlly improve performance" bit is untrue, substances that help w oxygenating blood can help w stamina and leads to athletes having better stamina (make or break a program) and practice for longer, since fs is founded upon practice and repetition it can most certainly improve a skaters performance
I have to say Rugby being a New Zealander, but the ice skating is exquisitely beautiful True art crafted with such outstanding physical strength , I love it so much...Such skill,
Why does this say "female figure skaters" lol these could almost all apply to male figure skaters lmao Oh also professional figure skating isn't really a thing unless you do shows, which is done once you retire from competitive figure skating...
some rules are not accurate, the music genre obligations only apply to ice dancing, and the restricted number of jumps and spins is for every categories/gender though they might be different (men have more jumps)
I am a National level figure skater and the rule about themed music for female figure skaters is not true but it is in a rhythm dance for an ice dance couple
I started skating when I was eight. I competed a few times when I was nine and ten, but then decided that rehearsing a program took too much time out of my skating schedule. Also I started to get rly insecure abt my body and didn’t want to wear a tight dress in front of anyone. I haven’t competed in a singles event since then. However, I’m 14 now and I passed juvenile moves in the field and preliminary freestyle tests the other day, so I still participate in other things. I’m on the theatre on ice team at my rink too, and I enjoy show type skating much more than competitive skating. I don’t know if all of these rules are fair, but I can avoid most of them anyway so I don’t mind.
The Backflip itself is seriously dangerous and frightening but to have this much control and power to be landing it on one blade without even being in charge to do correction moves at all is wowi impressive.
Really? Because I beg to differ, maybe it used to be that way but it isn't currently. Yes everything they said is true in one way or another but they were extremely exaggerated.

@@SniperNinja115 uhh yes, it's easy to know that you're a guy as you clearly don't understand having what you wear judged for "being too distracting to members of the opposite sex"

I know right 💪
The backflip was banned not because it was too “show biz,” but because it’s incredibly dangerous. One wrong move and a skater can be paralyzed or even killed. The ISU did not want to encourage practice of this dangerous move.
shit i thought the flying head move was worse.... like the skater balances on the man's head. wow.

The diet isn’t because they’re self conscious(at least most of the time), it’s because figure skaters can’t fluctuate in weight since gaining or loosing weight throws them off their centre of balance and makes it harder to jump and spin

The fact that Surya did her backflip while both a figure-skater and having performed as a gymnast for a long time, she knew what she was doing. While yes, it takes away points, she knew the risks. That said, falling on ice would hurt WAY worse than the mat that gymnasts use for floor routines...

They also legit shot a bullet at Russians saying "only two russian skaters" bro why not say just two skaters jeez
Berezhnaya stated that she had taken cold medication containing pseudoephedrine as found in medications such as Sudafed approved by a doctor but had failed to inform the ISU as required.
i supossed something along those lines
Okay so I'm a figure skater and this video makes everything seem so high stakes. And all of these rules are the exact same for men.... Just sayin
yh!
How did you get started?
The skirt one isn’t for men, and the birth control one-
At 6:10 your costume can hit the ice if it’s still attached to your costume, the costumes must not have any detachable details and if they have any detachable details, it can result in deduction. The only time your costume can’t touch the ice is when a piece of the costume fall off and falls onto the ice. For example You can slide on the ice you your pants (like in a spider lunge) but you have to be on one blade or it’s edge to count it as a valid move and not a “fall” that can result in deductions
Also moves like backflips, long pauses or laying on the ice are banned but please clarify that it’s only banned in competition but can be used in galas exhibitions and shows
I kinda laughed at the no laying on the ice bit because I always watch Dancing On Ice and the bolero is a requirement for the final
These aren’t even crazy rules, they make perfect sense.

@@noelstar1456 I think a rule was introduced fairly recently that the skirt should not go past the knees
Exactly
Thank you. I consider myself a fairly avid fan, yet, I had no idea what she was talking about when she mentioned the themed music. I only watch singles.
And even I did single figure skating for 6 years and I would help checking the ice between competitions for the synchronized skating and there was no rules about glitters on the ice !
Thank you! You are absolutely right!
Also it's pronounced Vitt not Witt
Almost all of these apply to men, and many of them aren't rules at all but rather norms or tips
When they start mixing up ice dance and singles rules 👀
“Themed music” is like ANY other dance related thing!
•dancing- you need a song to dance to
•gymnastics- you need songs to give the audience a show
•even at the circus! All acts need song themes, either funny, intense, aggression- many!
They forgot the safe sport rules too. But that’s not just for women.
Fiona Rose ikr, and now coaches can get in trouble for having their students phone numbers FOR SCHEDULING ICE TIME even if the parent cant
Froggie Sk8er omg sooooooo true 😂
Safe sport is still fairly new so it probably wouldn’t have made it in and like you said it doesn’t have to do with just women’s skating
the music rule when the committee picks the theme only applies for ice dance. single skaters and pairs skaters are allowed to skate to pretty much whatever they want

@@panpancake5646 No, men do the same number of jumps.
Men are allowed to jump quads in the SP
19katherine1213 so men have to wear skirts
Why include the need for good diet and training time as "rules"? Any athlete would need to abide by a training plan to succeed. And are these skaters technically professional?
They're actually not. The Olympic skaters are all "amateurs". They have to get special clearance from their federation to skate in shows and earn money that way. Otherwise, it's just the prize money they earn...and the prize money's not great.
The correct term is Olympic-eligible versus non-Olympic-eligible.
Men can wear tights now!

some rules stated here are incorrect. for example, though the jump requirements are correct, the short program has 3 jump passes instead of 7. the themed music rule only applies to ice dance, which is kind of ironic bc a video of evgenia's nocturne featured in the explanation, but nocturne is no where near latin style. also to mention, no it was not 2018 where lyrics were allowed. it literally says in the passage that it was allowed since 2014-2015. probably should change some of these explanations but for a sport that tbh is underrated (:/), pretty good job (also im a figure skater).
they did say the allowance of lyrics was a new change for the 2018 olympics, not the 2017-2018 season

I’ve been skating for ten years. These rules are pretty generic. There are also many cases in which these rules don’t apply. Mostly accurate though
I was very surprised to see how informative this video was, as a figure skater I always go into videos like these expecting to see some crazy exaggeration of isu rules but these were all pretty true
this is so inaccurate it makes me mad
Same lol
Yep, it makes our sport sound impossible. Like yeah if you want to compete at the Olympics, you may train like crazy and diet, but for most of us, we’re pretty normal. Our sports just unique.
Same!! I’ve been skating since I was 4 years old (so 9 years) and I know that not all skaters have to follow these rules. A lot of us also can just eat whatever we want, we don’t have to go on a crazy diet.
as someone who knows nothing about ice skating, could you please tell me what's inaccurate?
I remember seeing Suriya's backflip live. My mom and I were clapping and yelling. What a hero.
I used to be loveeee watching figure skating as a kid un the 90s. It was so graceful and daring. I imagine being on the ice skating like that.
The worst thumbnail photo ever. Lol. Never saw her look so bad.
What is a "professional- competitive" skater that she keeps referring to? They're two different things.
I was going to comment the same thing.
yea precisely!! they are different! I don't think Alina Zagitova is a professional cause she is still competing. She can only perform in shows during the off season.
The correct term is Olympic-eligible versus non-Olympic-eligible.
‘She knew that it was illegal. She knew that she was gonna get nailed for it. She did it anyway’
My teachers in PTMs
I'm 11 years old and have been training for 2 or 3 years and I have a skating show every April and last year I had to do two group performances
Love figure skating! It‘s my favorite sport 😍
I have to say Rugby being a New Zealander, but the ice skating is exquisitely beautiful
True art crafted with such outstanding physical strength ,
I love it so much...Such skill,
I like pairs.
Why does this say "female figure skaters" lol these could almost all apply to male figure skaters lmao
Oh also professional figure skating isn't really a thing unless you do shows, which is done once you retire from competitive figure skating...
My boy gave up 10 years of figure skating to be an idol and I’m proud of him❤️

SUNGHOON 🥺
some rules are not accurate, the music genre obligations only apply to ice dancing, and the restricted number of jumps and spins is for every categories/gender though they might be different (men have more jumps)
I am a National level figure skater and the rule about themed music for female figure skaters is not true but it is in a rhythm dance for an ice dance couple
I want to be an Ice Skater. It does take a long time. But I was told it’s never to late
Yuzuru: yeah no sliding with my legs on ice is my thing
The Backflip itself is seriously dangerous and frightening but to have this much control and power to be landing it on one blade without even being in charge to do correction moves at all is wowi impressive.
I competed for 25 years. This is all true. Even worse actually.
Really? Because I beg to differ, maybe it used to be that way but it isn't currently. Yes everything they said is true in one way or another but they were extremely exaggerated.
I'm a figure skater and some of there arent correct
“they have to train almost everyday-“
no really? it’s not like they’re athletes
these videos are really dumb, it's a sport, and in any sport the athletes at the top level will train a lot, have to pass tests etc.
They are athletes and this is a sport
“If the costume is deemed to be too distracting” well that’s basically the ice skating version of not showing your shoulder in high school.....I thought professional bodies would be above this level of immature sexism
RB2K19, no.
@@SniperNinja115 uhh yes, it's easy to know that you're a guy as you clearly don't understand having what you wear judged for "being too distracting to members of the opposite sex"
Well modesty is the key word here not your opinion
@@rb2k196, what are you on about, this seems like a you problem, respectfully and genuinely speaking, sister🖤🖤..
I think they just don't want you to flash anyone with intimate body parts, or the outfit to be too showy like with millions of feathers and fringes etc. to not distract from the performance, I think that's what they mean.
Jonny weir is in the movie “Spinning Out” and he uses the exact same move
Please stop reporting on my sport, you clearly don’t understand it 😂
THOT POLICE it’s not your sport
Pink Sniper it is a sport I do, stop being so literal.
@@marahr5616 not its not and stop saying oh yeah do a backflip whatever do a backflip on a skinny bean yeah thought so
@@robertevbayekha6639 bro are you good?
Ikr! You’d think a big channel like this would do their research 😂 like they keep calling them professional figure skaters but competitive skaters are VERY different from professional
A few mistakes in here, but a nice video 👏👏
I competed to senior level, and as a professional. I skated for 18 years. 😊⛸⛸🏴 It's a tough sport, trust me!
I understand. I've ice skated before when I was a kid. It is tough. Not only that you have to be agile but also have to keep in mind that when you do these moves you have to try not to break every single bone in your body. I've never competed no but still it takes a while lot of concentration and balance to pull moves off effortlessly! To me some judges have no compassion for people when they make minor mistakes or injuries.
⛸
@@anthonymcmillan8273 no compassion because they're doing their job lol. Anyone could say they're injured because mistakes are forgiven 😉 Had a fair few injuries myself. That's not fun! You just need to get your head down and push through.
I'm a figure skater and over half of those rules were highly over exaggerated.
Actually….. they’re not. As a competitive figure skater for 14 years at senior level when I retired I can tell you, this video is actually surprisingly accurate. but if you say that this video is over exaggerated, then you’re clearly not an elite figure skater. Sorry
As an athlete I can agreed this list. I began staking @ 4 and a half years old... My parents immediately knew I had no talent in the sport.
I know nothing about this sport but those rules sound legitimate...
*Amount of times the skaters spinned* 🔄

Colorful Bumblebee lol 😂
Why don’t you put Nathan Chen jumping face or his facial expression when fell 3 times in Olympic SP as a thumnail instead???
Because the video was about rules that female figure skaters have to follow.. even though men have to follow them too. And they're all sooooo exaggerated.
Such a fabulous and underrated sport.
As a skater, there are really really lots of rules. And btw, Anna did really good!
Very fair rules.
Same for all.
