Nirvana unplugged is so personal level experience, nowadays bands don't do unplugged. If you want to see Nirvana live like they normally was then you have to watch Live At Reading, especially School and Lithium from that concert are so good. I had a pleasure to see that concert live from MTV when we were teens and it blew our minds.
Nirvana Unplugged is probably the best one that MTV ever aired. I was so lucky to get to see Nirvana live 6 months before Kurt took his own life. It's also crazy to think that 2 of the original Foo Fighters are in this video: Dave Grohl and Pat Smear. Pat also played with Nirvana when I saw them live.
There was no joy in this performance. This was not a good day for him. The band was fighting. He was sick and throwing up blood. This show almost never happened. This young man's life was so messed up. He was on top of the world but very unhappy. Mainly due to drug addiction. It was less than a year after this show that he ended his own life. He lay dead in his home for almost four days. Nobody came to check on him because he was supposed to be in rehab. Not that anyone would have checked anyway. He climbed the wall to escape rehab and took a taxi to buy shotgun shells that he used on himself the next day. The police had seized his guns for his own protection twice already but a friend bought the shotgun for him. He was high on morphine and Valium when he shot himself. He left a suicide note in a flower pot with the pen stabbed through the middle of it. His body was found by an electrician that was there to install security lighting. He was in the greenhouse above his garage. I imagine he wanted to go out in a place of beauty.
Not sure if you know but the drummer Dave Grohl is now the lead singer for the Foo Fighters. If you haven't reacted to them, they have a lot of great songs.

I prefer this version to the studio, because of the change in lyrics, from 'enemy' (now sung once) to 'memory' (3X to complete the chorus). It's a very small change but to me full of meaning. I suspect Kurt wants to make the point that enemies exist only in the mind, memory, memory of some past offence, real or imagined. At least in the case of imagined offence (real offence being harder to forgive), it's easy to wipe the slate clean, just fuhgeddaboudit. He promises he will have no gun to exact revenge, there's now no need, no need to worry; just "come as you are". If that's why he redid the lyric then he really did care about what the lyrics mean (sometimes), and in such a small space for him to insert such a deep message is imo poetic genius. :0 (maybe - who knows)

He was on Heroin not morphine. Too much heroin to do anything but immediately and fatality become incapacitated. Then put his works away. Smoke two different brands of cigarettes, and then shoot himself and have the shell somehow eject to his right and end up to his left as the shotgun ejection port was facing to the right from the shotgun being held with the trigger facing t in the up position so his thumb could reach the trigger apparently. The shotgun was fully loaded as well as if one shell wasn't enough. Maybe he was so high he forgot the shotgun was loaded and pulled the trigger while he was flat on his back? I wonder if the detectives managed to look up from where they found him laying? Thought his head wasn't destroyed due to birdshot being in the shotgun, perhaps a few pellets went into the ceiling?
R.I.P. Kurt Cobain 🖤 He was such a beautiful & phenomenally talented soul - Nirvana wouldn't carry on without him. PLEASE react to 'Where Did You See Last Night' Unplugged. One of his finest performances....the way his blue eyes looked up before singing the last line is truly haunting.....I tear up everytime I watch it..... 💔
The reason why Kurt didn’t look so happy during this live show was because a couple hours after Kurt was throwing up blood and almost canceled the show and the band was going through rough patches with each other
The unplugged session in general were very good. Nirvana's session I have loved from the moment I watched it first; knowing that these songs are so powerful and played here subdued and empathic makes them for me a joy to listen to again and again. Unfortunately Cobain passed away after struggling with his inner demons. He was a shy guy and found it very difficult to handle the pressure of becoming a famous rock star, rather all of a sudden. I think part of why he looks, indeed, sad were his shyness and the personal demons he faced. I will always remain a Nirvana fan. The remaining members of the band decided to not continue as Nirvana after Kurt's death. Dave Grohl, the drummer, founded his own band Foo Fighters and has had a lot of success with it; and made lots of great songs and albums. Kris Novoselic played in a number of other bands after Nirvana, but I do not know his music.
Growing up in the backwoods of Olympia in the state of Washington, Kurt Cobain was one of the 'lost children' of his generation - broken home... didn't fit in w/ his peers... did not have a future... He discovered rock music and began hanging out in the local rock scene. Kurt met Buzz Osbourne (vocalist/ guitarist) of The Melvins (who are still around today!) who taught him how to play guitar in the 80's. However, Kurt did not have to confidence to join a band like The Melvins at the time... Later, he met bassist Krist Novoselic and they decided to form a band together around 1987... Despite not being a proficient guitarist, Kurt always had an idea of what he wanted to play sound-wise, and would insist on rehearsing songs until they sounded the way he wanted... (The 'MTV Unplugged' session in 1993 was no different - Kurt almost backed out of doing the show until he heard what he wanted from the band). In 1989, the band was calling themselves Nirvana and recorded their first album "Bleach" on a meager budget and released on an indie label... They were destitute and struggling by 1990 as they worked on new songs, when offers started coming to sign Nirvana to a bigger label... Dave Grohl (drums) also joined in 1991 and Nirvana finished recording their 2nd album 'Nevermind'. With the single 'Smells like teen spirit' exploding on MTV in the fall of 1991, Nirvana unexpectedly went from zero to 100 late in the year as 'Nevermind' went to #1 on the US charts and became a massive global hit by 1992. Nirvana's success ushered in a new 90's rock scene for what became 'grunge' or 'alternative' rock, w/ bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, Alice In Chains... all selling platinum by 1992. Despite finally having plenty of fame and money, Kurt Cobain was clearly not happy... he still had the same health problems... the same addiction struggles... and now he had the added pressure of fame. In live shows, Kurt was clearly not one to smile for the cameras... Going into 1993, Kurt demanded that the next album 'In Utero' would sound nothing like 'Nevermind'... He wanted a raw, heavy record that captured Nirvana's live sound... not a polished pop record. When Nirvana was offered to do 'MTV Unplugged', they insisted that they do it their own way... play the set once only live... and play obscure songs that they were fans of (by The Meat Puppets, The Vaselines, Leadbelly, and David Bowie) and their own obscure songs. In 1994, Kurt attempted suicide on tour in Rome, Italy... he survived and was flown back to the US for rehab. However, he left the facility and was found dead in his Seattle home from an apparent suicide using a shotgun. In a suicide note, he apologized and revealed that being a performer was not 'fun' for him anymore... He left behind a daughter w/ wife Courtney Love, singer/ guitarist of the band Hole.
Watched it live on MTV while having a neighborhood party. Kurt sang to us all on that day. The way he arranged the floor in this video in almost like a 'wake.' sad.

In the MTV unplugged where did you sleep last night he talks about lead bellys estate wanted to sell him lead bellys guitar for $500,000 the guitar that Kurt Cobain plays on the on the MTV unplugged sold at auction for $6,000,000 it's the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction!
Kurt generally wasn't a happy person, otherwise he would still be with us today. This concert was one of his last before his apparent suicide. This song is actually about his relationship with heroin so it's very personal to him. It talks from the perspective of the drug itself rather than from Kurt's point of view. Come as you are because no matter where you are in life, it's got a hold of you. It doesn't have a gun forcing you to use it either. I suggest checking out Where did you sleep last night from the same unplugged concert.
