    This was a great tutorial! I just did a lone star quilt that Im giving to my father-in-law for Christmas. I wish I had known this way to do it before I did mine. I sewed the all star together then the background to the stars! It was nightmare! This looks like a much easier way!

    Great tutorial and as always good tips. In a future video can you consider one on starches and show how much is a good amount. Do you use a can of spray, Best Press type starch or make your own? I hear if you starch your border you will not get the waving on the outside and is one of the questions I have. Have a safe and happy holiday season and again thanks for a great year of tutorials.

    • @Ronibearable
      @Ronibearable 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      wavy borders are not related to starch or no starch. There are a couple of causes for wavy borders. 1. When you sew your border to your quilt make sure you are sewing it to a straight edge, in other words if the edge of your quilt has some blocks that are a bit longer or a bit shorter (we all get those stair step edges) and you sew your border to those longer and shorter edges you are going to have a wave. Either trim the edge of your quilt to be straight before sewing the border to it, or mark a straight line next to the edge to sew on. Don't sew to those stair stepped edges, because you are making the border a tiny bit wider and narrower, which results in a wave. 2. The second cause of wavy borders is ironing. Do NOT push your iron across the border in ANY direction. Hold the border open and place the iron down, then lift the iron and move it. Sliding the iron in any direction will distort the fabric. Once it's pressed open, then you may starch it, however do NOT push your iron at this point either, lift and press. Always on the border. (the lift and press applies really to all quilting, if you get blocks that are not square, it's likely your ironing causing it). 3. Lastly, it's important to square your quilt top BEFORE borders, not just after. If the quilt top flares out at the corners, then logically so will your borders. People square their blocks, then square after quilting, but you really should square after EACH step. Blocks, top, borders then quilted. Here is a great tutorial on how to square: th-cam.com/video/TcgOsoWXy2A/w-d-xo.html

    I only discovered your channel last week and I have learned soooooo much! I love this quilt - I've made mine up in pinks, greys and purple - but I'm have trouble with the bulk in the centre where all the points meet. Please could you explain your technique for reducing it? Looking forward to hearing from you!

    How could one match up the fabric pattern in the corners to give it a mitered look, with that border fabric so that the flower print matches up? I think it would be hard! I don't think most people would notice anyways...but it would bug me! :-)

      it might be this, since the template was a Nancy's Notion brand, this may be what she used. We will see if she answers. www.nancysnotions.com/product/super+board+gridded+cotton+cover.do

    • @sandiihassenstein8206

      Livinnpjs it looks more solid than a cover .... but we will see what she says

    • @Ronibearable
      @Ronibearable 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandi, yes I agree and it's a different color since hers was blue. But, I thought that maybe since Laura is forever doing handy things, maybe she bought the cover and then sewed it into a mat. Which is what I may do. I am thinking you could fuse it to some foam like soft and stable maybe. Though, I would rather just buy one. LOL. I did make myself a quilters ironing board, (BEST thing I have ever done for my quilting!!) and I could make a mat for the top of it using one of these covers. It's a big board cover so it's not pointed like other ironing board covers. It is not large enough to fit my board, or I would just use it as a cover. I used a hollow core door 24 x 80, covered it with fabric and insulbrite. The doors are 24.00, and I glued wooden blocks to the bottom so it would fit right onto the top of my ironing board and not slide off. Just set it on top of your board, mark where the block stoppers need to go and glue them. You should make yourself one. It's changed my quilting life for the better. :0)

    • @sandiihassenstein8206
      @sandiihassenstein8206 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Livinnpjs I have a 4x4 foot table top that I use for ironing finished tops and i use my regular ironing board for normal size blocks. I would love a huge mat with the squares for my large board. Because my space is relatively small it fits on top of my cutting board. I might get some canvas and make one if I can’t find one already made.
