Courtenay Hughes is our resident in-town instructor who also teaches online for Missouri Star. Over 30 years ago she started making stuffed bunnies and that simple beginning snowballed into a deep love of quilting and sewing. She’s a truly gifted quilter who makes complex techniques seem easy! When Courtenay’s not behind a sewing machine, you can find her taking long drives on the winding back roads of Missouri. She loves red velvet cake, classic Mustangs, her husband, and two wonderful children. Her advice to new quilters? “There are no quilt police. Also, take as many quilting classes as you can! Each instructor has something different to offer. Try many different ways to do one technique until you find one that works for you.” Oh, and don’t forget to laugh a lot!

I've wanted to learn to make one of these for quite a while now. This star pattern is popular with Native American cultures, and I want so much to try it. While this is the best, easiest tutorial I've found so far, I do understand that it will level up my quilting skills to keep seams aligned that don't nest. I'm so excited to pick my fabric for this one, and I'm not ruling out a christmas theme. Love it, Courtenay!!

Thank you! I made one in 1993 and I used 'Y' seams! I was surprised when I went back to see if my inside corners looked good and they did... but I remembered that I hand pieced it! :) I am going into my sewing room now and make one your way. Yesterday I finished a panel quilt from "Dignity" statue and she has the Lone Star draped around her which is why I looked for an easier way for this one. I also bordered it with diamonds and wasn't sure how to do the corners. Mine look just like yours so I guess there's not a way to turn corners easily. Thanks again!

I just finished my first small Lone Star. I actually did the marking of the 1/4” and pinned even though the instructions didn’t say to. BUT…I didn’t starch well enough, I did use steam and I had to rip a few seams before I started marking those seams, so I ended up with so much distortion AND I ended up cutting a few star points off trying to fix my mess. I swore that was my first and my last Lone Star. Watching this makes me want to try again! Thank you so much!
