Saving money on a low income is possible if you are strategic with choices that you make in your life. In this video, I share 8 ways to save money on a low income.
1. Take Yo Broke A** Home
Many people buy things with money they don't have to impress other people, which causes them to constantly be behind financially. If you do not have money, you should take steps to get yourself out of a bad financial situation. And although you might be depriving yourself of things in the short run, in the long run, you will have more control over your finances.
2. Treat Saving Like A Bill
We all have monthly bills that we pay every month like our cell phone, rent, and insurance. Every month, we manage to come up with the money to pay for these bills because we prioritize them. In order to save money, get in the habit of treating saving like it is a bill. When you prioritize saving in your life, you will come up with the money to save.
3. See How Sporadic Your Spending Is And Make It Predictable
Many people have trouble managing their money because their spending is very unpredictable and varies month to month. It is important to have a general idea of how much money you are spending each month so that you can plan your life around it. When you make your spending predictable, you can determine a specific amount of money to set aside each month to save.

4. Analyze And Cut Entertainment Expenses
We all have entertainment subscriptions that we pay each month, and sometimes we can have multiple subscriptions that we don't use. If you take the time to write down all of your monthly entertainment expenses, you can determine which ones aren't bringing you value and cut out those expenses.
5. Analyze Service Expenses And Find Cheaper Alternatives
We all have various service expenses that we pay each month like our cell phone bill, car insurance, and memberships. Oftentimes if you take the time to write down all of these expenses and search for cheaper alternatives, you can save money for switching to similar services.
6. Analyze And Cut Transportation Expenses
Outside of our housing, transportation is our second highest expenses totaling over $10,000 a year. It is important to take this expense seriously and analyze how much you are spending on gas, insurance, payments, and maintenance, and see if there is anything you can lower or cut out.
7. Only Get Gas At The Gas Station
Many people get in the habit of spending a lot of money by constantly buying treats at the gas station. Although these things do not cost that much money, over time they can add up to hundreds of dollars a year. Avoid the convenience of buying things in the gas station and only get gas at the gas station.
8. Live Like It’s 1999
Twenty years ago people spent less money on things because there was less temptations in life. Instead of embracing all of these modern temptations in life, we should choose to live a more simple life so we spend less and save more.

We cut way back on eating out. We like buffets, but feel sick after over eating. We were planning to go out to a local seafood buffet for our anniversary. We discussed it and decided to make a one pot seafood meal at home. The whole meal cost less than one of us would spend at the buffet. We bought our version of champagne (sparkling white grape juice).
Great inspiration Augustin! Nowadays, it is soooo easy to spend money, online shopping is way too expanded. And thanks to social media, people feel the need to buy things just because others do it too. And i was no exception. What helpes me everytime when I have the need to buy unneccessary things is to look at the flats/houses on the market. I always realise that even if I have some savings, Im too broke for mortgage (for the banks). And guess what? It motivates me to try to save more :)
Transfer high interest credit card balances to lower interest cards and pay off ASAP!
I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.
I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I’d suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

Also remember that though it is a good start your savings would never be enough. The economy is designed that way. Invest your spare cash in profitable things. increase your sources of income.
motivational speakers always sound this way and make everything sound so easy... tried to invest in stocks months back, came out with way less... would have been better off saving or even lavishing my money...
I've been in your shoes and I'll tell you for sure that it's because you rushed into it. You must either understand the market or get the services of a fin. adviser for your "investment" to count as one. I made close to a hundred grand late last year only after some months of throwing my money in the wind. You should try again, good thing is you now know better. Goodluck!

You should start by looking out for those from known firms and good track records. You should also make sure the person is licensed. Personally, I use Kelly Matwick. She's good and you could also look her up.

I got a simple mobile plan for like $65 a month, ever since I got that plan I haven’t needed anything phone related. Also upgraded my phone recently from my gf giving me her old iPhone XR, I was using the iPhone 7 for the longest time. I got that simple mobile plan in 2018 so for 5 years I’ve saved so much money when I really think about it!

I do additional saving on top of saving… I call it chump change. Basically for example.. your check is $1013.25. U put $13.25 in your savings. Next check could be $1105.15. U put $105.15 in savings. U know your baseline by doing your budget. So bank anything over that :)

Find out what your average utility bill is per month and pay that much when it's below the average monthly bill. This reduces the impact of the higher months. Walking is the cheapest activity you can find when you "Just want to get out of the house". Might even get to know your neighborhood a little better.
I got a quote for solar panels then divided that by my annual power bill, worked out it would take around 5 years to recoup my initial outlay. It actually ended up paying for itself in less than 4 year's because all the excess power I make is fed back into the grid and I am paid for it. Last year alone I withdrew over $700 credit from my power account.

By moving to Europe from California I’ve save $5000 a month! We have no personal cars, we live 5 minutes walking distance away from 6 grocery stores and the shopping mall, 10 minutes away form forest trail and ocean via walking, 10 minutes of walking distance to my son’s school, 5 minutes of walking to hospital and dentist, banks, train station. 15 minutes from airport via bus. Free healthcare, dental, sports, swimming hall, free heating, electric bill is just $25 a month vs $150-180 in California, internet is $5 a month vs $80, phone bill with unlimited data $12 and free roaming within the EU, cheaper food and cheaper housing. Own our condo outright with no property tax it is worth $150k, own SAUNA. All of our hobbies are free that is walking , skiing, biking in nature. Summer time we picked buckets of wild fresh blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, currant, and chanterelles mushrooms, apples, cherries all for free on public land. Am able to retire at age 38😂

Pay in cash. When you go get your groceries or whenever you buy from a physical store pay in cash. It makes a lot of difference in the perception of money spent and helps refrain, imo.

I didn't become financially independent till I was in my mid 40s after having a major financial setback during the covid , Thank God i'm now on my feet . In addition to buying my second house, I'm also making money on a monthly basis through passive income, and I've also met some of my goals. I really hope this motivates someone to know that it doesn't matter if you don't have any of these things yet; no matter your age, you can start today. Investing can help you change your future!
I try to get most of my groceries from Aldi's which is a lot cheaper than the other grocery stores here in Florida like Publix, Winn Dixie, and even less expensive than Walmart.

One stop shopping! It's hard to save money with marketing like that! What chance does your average Joe even have?? Especially here in Pennsylvania where every gas station has slot machines! In Pennsylvania, if you're not living like the Amish, you're living in sin! There's like no middle ground here. Drugs, gambling, hookers, Dollar generals. That's pretty much all you find here outside of places like Lancaster lol

I think the one thing most investors miss when calculating intrinsic value, is that they look solely at the history to estimate growth in the future. The growth rate is very important, it arguably should take the most time in valuation. The past 10 years could be unusually good/bad due to acquisitions/dispositions affecting financials. Look to the future and make your best judgements.
There is one thing I have learned in recent months it is to remain calm, especially when it comes to investment in Stock. Learn not to sell in a panic when everything goes down and not to buy in euphoria when everything goes up. I advise y'all to forget predictions and start making a good profit now because future valuations are all speculations and guesses. Individuals can seek counsel from a certified financial advisor to optimize financial outcomes, who can provide specialized advice and methods to decrease expenses and maximize income.
You are right but the market is profitable if you are using a really good broker or account manager to help out with trades or provide signals. A little hack: just buy frozen taquitos at the grocery store. Although they don't have the "been sitting out for 8 hours and have been touched by strangers" feel that make them extra good.

Yes, and that's why having an emergency fund is a good idea.
The problem is just that it's basically saving money you're not intending to use on anything, while, if you're low income, you probably have specific things you should also be saving for 🥲
If I want to get the best bang for my buck, my monthly spending will NEVER be consistent. Since I budget for my sinking funds, I pay many bills (insurance, property taxes, medical/dental bills) in full, once a year or at the time of service. This causes huge fluctuations in my monthly spending, but not in my monthly budgeting. I have a “Pay Me” bill that I budget for and transfer over each month (just like any other mandatory bill), so the consistent spending is not important. With a true budget, I don’t care how much I spend each month, as long as the funds are in the category or budget line.

Since I stopped working I've reduced my petrol bill to $40 a month. I now have more time to walk or ride almost everywhere.

For me taking control of my grocery bill has been really important because those prices go up so much and so often and you can't stop eating in the same way you can cut your netflix sub. I grow my own, scratch cook, use cashback apps, stack up loyalty points at the supermarket and use yellow sticker discount deals to get my grocery bill down to zero.
I've been thinking about shuffling around some of my budget lately. I am currently putting money away to pay off the rrst of my student loans and I'm almost there. Once I do that, I will be able to start putting some more money to the side, but I am also going to lower my cell phone bill by switching to a lower plan. My subscriptions are essentially cut down to where its only items that I use on a regular basis.
Well,i recommend that you,reader of this,learn to bake bread for yourself. Its SO cheap,quick and easy. We dont know this because of course the hospitality industry,the catering industry,the food manufacture industry has got an interest in keeping bread making mystified, difficult and time consuming. Even when a tv chef shows us "how to make bread" they always make sure to make it look expensive, difficult and time consuming. We dont actually need brick shaped loaves of bread that go mouldy before youve got through them. Most of the worlds populations have versions of bread that are round flatbreads you can mix and bake in 20 minutes. Just enougg for the day,or the meal. They do not want you to know that.. google it and give it a try.
Two songs that make relevant points about money. One. Its a song written by Woody Guthrie about how the migrants from the Oaklahoma dust bowl got received at the California state border. I know a version sung by Nancy Griffiths and Guy ....,it goes "If you aint got that Doh-ray-mi" (you better go somewhere else). But my favourite is a song by George Strait called "Youve Got To Have An Ace In The Hole". It says in 3 minutes EVERYTHING anyone needs to know about money management.

I save $5 in dimes every time I got money and save my lose change. At the end of the month I have about $40. Put it in your emergency fund.
About the taquitos section, in Mexico we call it "gastos vampiro" o " gastos hormiga" . It means that they are so small that you don't notice them, but all together make a huge waste of money.

This year we did a staycation. We visited local PA attractions we had wanted to see for years. We put back a little money to go. We didn't have to put the pets in pet hotels (aka overpriced caging of your pets) or hire someone to visit them daily. Hotel fees were greatly reduced. Fuel costs didn't change. Our vacation cost way less. There was no real demand to be anywhere or do anything. It was probably the most relaxing vacation we've had for less than $500 total cost. Our vehicles are paid off. If we're on vacation, we might buy coffee to keep us awake at the gas station. That expense didnt occur this year.
Yeas for staycations. Look at all those people who are coming to your town for vacation and pretend you are one of them.
Wow wish that was same in Ireland . It’s cheaper go abroad than it is to stay here and go somewhere . I went on a hot holiday for a week to France and cheaper than me going down country and booking a hotel ahead of time just to basic hotel . Sadly can’t staycation in Ireland much anymore it’s so damn expensive

I stopped those weekend stops at the coffee shop. A few bucks each time adds up. I just make it home. I rarely go out to eat and rarely do take out. It's getting easier the more I do this. Paying off the cc each month but I need to bring them down. I stopped the Amazon shopping unless its business related, and I need it NOW. It's hard to change but once it's done, I think it's easier to live. I want to work less and play more.
You see those green living things behind you we call plants? Yeaaaah... Those get me broke every month :') I am obsessed with plants, and I don't even know how it all started... I need to stop buying so many plants and maybe sell some of my plants... I am so bad with money and I am an impulse buyer, where all rational thinking goes out the window when I shop for plants... but in the long run, when I don't have money later in the month, I regret spending my money...

This is a great suggestion for a future topic. This involves some deep psychological work, for sure. Recently, I have had to put in place some boundaries with others. I can't be expected to pay for everything or bail everyone out financially. I have had to make deliberate choices to spend money on myself as I have earned this right.
Time spent with friends and loved ones is more precious. Take hikes or walks, make meals together, anything that costs 0. If they stop calling you then you didn't need them in your life.
I'm interested in this topic as well. Guidelines and tips for gift giving, charity giving (so many worthy "go-fund me" requests).
I've put a "present for... / money gift for ..." line in my budget, just like any other kind of expense. I don't give money anymore when I've reached the set amount.
I bought caffeine tablets to replace buying coffee for work. Because the average for a coffee is $2 - 4 dollars a coffee. The caffeine tablets that I have 60 in it, it was $9 but definitely said on coffee lol

The book The richest man in Babylon by George Clason was a game changer. He just spelt it out.. First thing you need to do is pay yourself. We pay the clothes maker, shoe maker, television supplier, basically everyone but ourselves. Don't expect anything to be left to save if you don't prioritise yourself....what starts as a difficult thing to do quickly becomes your greatest pleasure....

May and june are nuts for me because each year my rent goes up btwn 50-75 and my car registration is also due in June. If I were single, and living near my family, I’d actually consider not owning a car. My sisters wouldn’t mind taking me grocery shopping with them, and most other outings I’d use Uber or even consider taking the city bus. It’s affordable when you live in a smaller city. My husband is an Aircraft mechanic, but can also do most car repairs, and that saves us at least 50% or more vs. using a car repair shop. Even doing your own oil changes saves $$. I used to do my own oil changes after I got my 1st car in High School. Not sure who taught me how to do that ? 🤔 No you tube back then, and my Dad didn’t know anything about cars, so I’m thinking maybe my boyfriend at the time must have showed me how. Not going out to eat saves a lot. We don’t go out to eat, unless we have family coming for a visit.
I wish we could live like it was 1899 -- no electric bill, no phone, no cars, no take-out, no health insurance: think of the savings! LOL Fun and thought-provoking video as always, Austin, thanks!

I guess am living in 1899. My electric bill is $29 a month due to free heating, no cars because we live in Europe so walking, biking and public transportation (train, tram, buses) , free health insurance, no property tax, living a free life where we can save 60% of our income. We mainly spend on travel and food the biggest expense. How ever we are saving way less than when we had lived in California😅 two income household to now one income. Am done with the rat race at least for a decade or so.
