The Arnside Bore

- Another walk from home to Arnside on the Kent estuary....part of Morecambe Bay. The tidal bore is caused by the topography of the bay here, combined with the River Kent holding back the incoming tide until it is overwhelmed and the tide rushes in. I continued my walk along the edge of the bay to the River Bela. All in beautiful early Spring sunshine.
I have been all over the world but for some reason this is my favorout place.
@@10Fokker It's a lovely place, best visited in the evening when the sun is setting, I'm very lucky to live just a few miles away.

Yes, there is so much to see in the Arnside and Silverdale area...we've been just North of Arnside today as the tide's have been high again over the last couple of days.

This was a fascinating video! I visited Silverdale for the first time followed by Arnside a few hours later. (usually go to Formby) Seen so many quicksand warnings I youtubed Arnside Quicksand, and hence youtube then reccomended me your video with its algorithm! 😂 Now seeing how fast that bore came in at Arnside, makes what I saw at Silverdale even more crazy that day, we walked to the cove over the fields and down the steps and climbed up to the cave. Whilst in there we seen x2 people and a dog literally miles and miles out on the sand flats, between various water channels, and from where I was stood it would require trudging through lots of deep mud to even get near. I'm guessing they have some safe tried and tested passage to get to these far out sand belts, but it mesmerized me for a second and also filled me with equal terror! On the way home we drove through Morecombe for memories gone by as a kid at Frontier land.
You're quite correct, the sands are dangerous places, when the tide comes in it floods lots of smaller channels which can cut people off 😲☹️
Every year the coastguard have to rescue people....we have a dedicated team of volunteers who help those standed by the tide or stuck in quicksand..."Bay Search and Rescue"

I saw the bore when I was a kid. It was very impressive in person as a small human. Must’ve been in the early 70’s.
It varies with the height of the tide of course, but also with the amount of water coming down the Rivers Kent and Bela. The channel also varies in width and depth and alters the bore!

Yes, to see it at it's best the tide needs to be 9.5metres or higher.

@@WainwrightWalksWiaLocalLad I have lived in the area..Walney born and now Kendal for over 50 years. Even been in Arnside when the first buzzer? goes, but never seen a bore! Even saw the small icebergs in the early 80s.Is there a prediction app for a high tide etc due reasonably soon?
@@FERNweh101 Hi the app I use is called Tide Times...that gives a time for the high tide at Arnside and it's height. The bore in the video was around 10metres from memory. The bore is normally about 2 and a half hours before high tide ish. Other factors are if the wind is behind it,and the amount of water coming down the River Kent.
