Heartbreaking. I left Lancaster Uni in 1995 and ended up as Frontierland's signwriter. It's a beautiful place. It has everything Brighton has, ten times over. Better beach, better views, fine architecture. It deserves so much more.
I used to live there back in the mid-'80s and then I could see the end coming, looking back I enjoyed it and had some good mates, we would have the jocks to come down for Glasgow fortnight, and the TT racers on the Manx Viking but the views the wildlife and the good times are still with me, even the Christmas lights, such a shame.
I was a (American) grad student at Lanc U in 1982, 83. I loved living in Morecambe because it on the coast. I remember the boardwalk always being busy and cheerful. I also had an invitation to perform at the Midland Hotel with a C&W band! Long, long time ago.
I left Morecambe 2 years ago for the north of Scotland. I found living in Morecambe's West End an unhappy experience. I'm from London and had to cope with prejudice and aggression fairly regularly. We visit Morecambe for various reasons. We see bands at The Platform and went to the kite festival today. The promanard is pleasant. The decay is evident in the buildings and the people living there.
Agreed, I still don't understand why they knocked the Dome down, and got rid of the festivals. It was the final nail in the coffin for its decline, and it's forcing many people to move elsewhere, as there are fewer and fewer jobs
From Wikipedia: A resort is a place used for relaxation or recreation, attracting visitors for vacations and/or tourism. Resorts are places, towns or sometimes commercial establishment operated by a single company. This does not describe Morecambe in the slightest.
I looked at moving to Morecambe in 2003...I even put an offer in on a house in Westminster Road. On my second visit was confronted with a thoroughly unpleasantly pissed junkie sitting in the doorstep and a burned out car in the street. Decided to stay in Lowestoft. But Morecambe has SO much going for it...even in the West End where most of the Victorian terraces could be splendid once more... Sadly it all boils down to money and a town such as Morecambe should have its own council and funding.
well, whatever people say about morcambe, and its repuation for being crap, i quite like it as it is. i like to go there when its crap weather, and theres barely anyone around, and stand on the edge of the pier watching the waves. i think its the most beautiful place in the world; the natural ocean, the veiw of the mountains on the other side, and the interesting pebbles and its of glass and shells. if you want to see disgusting, go to the so called fun blackpool. there, you have to wade in shit to paddle, and breathe in fumes sitting on the beach. and london's got way more bad areas, anyway. Morcambe is maybe not the best place if you want fairs and touristy stuff, but i can see further, and i actually prefer it. also, its really near to heysham, and heysham is georgeous. thats a nice area too.

Yes it is depressing, I'm not from Lancashire originally, but have spent too much precious time here, now i'm moving out from the North.. the towns of the North of the UK (that i've seen) all seem dull, stagnant, rundown and hopeless.. apart from much of the countryside and some lovely people. The govt and business never spent any money up here really, they aren't interested in the North. Sad.
I'm a Glaswegian who'll never vote for Scottish Nationalists because I love Morecambe and its decent folk too much. There's been flood, reession, closures and cuts. There's still a wee spark about the place that has heart and soul like nowhere else in the UK. I love you Morecambe - I hope Eric's ghost helps change things soon!
just think there needs to be more stuff to do other then just more cafe's, morecambe is a beautiful place for sure but just makes me sad what's happened to it.
I realy like Morecambe I think rebuilding Frontierland would be a good start It was a sad day when they closed it. A tourist resort with no tourist attractions!
such a shame, I lived there in the early 80's and it was on its way down then but i stIll loved the place, I left when I joined the ARMY and it really is a nice place I wish I had gone back for a while, fond memories.
Hi, I love Morecombe I used to live across the bay at Millom, Cumbria, Morecombe has a real sense of community not like Blackpool people must go to Morecombe and spend money, support the town in it's hard times it wont just recover it's self we need to help it, don't rely on the council we the public must do it, so go have a good time and give the town your support. Thanks.
I have seen some improvement in the shape of the Midland Hotel and also last year there was a Vintage Festival which are a start and also the Theatre is taking shape but I think there could more not least the Frontierland wasteland which should be developed and built on with something for the people of Morecambe and Lancaster and hopefully not more houses as I could imagine that happening if the council ain't careful. So come on people if you can't stay in Blackpool go to Morecambe. The Best View in the UK (From the Midland Hotel and Promenade) of the Lake District, Carnforth Station and Heritage Centre just round the corner as is Blackpool and your not far off the National Parks of The Lake District and The Yorkshire Dales and Don't forget the great walk along the Lancaster Canal near by from both Carnforth or Lancaster City. Come and see for yourself. You maybe surprised.
Great Idea I agree, on day Morecambe will be a great place again, it's needs people like you to invest in the town, dont give up one day it will happen, Morecambe is not finished It will rise better than ever, dont give up your dream keep trying, good luck. Hi from Canada.
Morecambe is... not actually all that unpleasant. It's certainly more interesting than Lancaster. Sure it has poverty, and it would help if the buildings were spruced up somewhat, but it's surprising nice for a depressed seaside town. Though it would help a lot if people didn't think regeneration was something that could be achieved by throwing money at a place, and Morecambe needs to accept that it's not a resort town any more.
My step mother and separately her parents provided full board weekly accommodation in Morecambe to visitors in the 1950s and 1960s. They converted their properties to self catering accommodation when they realised that the market was changing. After that many visitors ceased to visit Morecambe for week long visits and day coach trips became the norm. Thus hundreds of boarding houses and B&Bs ceased to be viable. The West End of Morecambe became 'bedsit' land and the decline inexorably began....
Best thing for Morecambe would be a bridge across the bays / estuary North and South , it's isolated by the roadways . Would be a great place to visit from the commercialism of Blackpool but the transport network is preventing the tide from turning
Blobbyland was advertised as a rescue package for Morcambe's tourist industry in the early 1990s, which many (but not all) locals were keen on, from what I recall. It proved to be an empty bubble that soon burst.
Morecambe's problems started in 1974 when Lancaster City Council took over the "running" of Morecambe from Morecambe and Heysham Borough council. Since then, funding for the town has all but been diverted to Lancaster at the expense of Morecambe. Now the place is over-run with DHSS scroungers who think it is a lovely place to come and live while claiming their benefits to squander on cheap drugs and give nothing back to the area. If they want "Job-seeker's Allowance" they should be made to tidy up the squalor they have created. Better still - send them to live next to him four comments down!
This attitude is exactly the problem. Morecambe IS NOT A SEASIDE RESORT ANYMORE! It was in the 50's, it isn't now. Blame budget airlines not Lancaster city council. They have poured enough money into that black hole already. And I agree, you should have your own council separate from Lancaster.
my grandparents owned 87 Albert road then they sold it.It was all done up in side and out,had lovely holiday makers,we never got a bad word about it. now the council own it.what they need to do is, (do it up which doesn't cost that much) It has 3 flats all with kitchen's and bathroom's. All it needs is a lick of paint to brighten it up and get family's living in them, such a shame letting it lose value ! .
This mirrors what we thought when we visited last year. So much potential, a stunning location but needs more regeneration than this country can afford. The whole NW is about to lose it's European funding, and what then?
Well. I still love morecambe and if the locals feel bad about where they live they can cheer themselves up and come and visit where I live just up the coast millom in Cumbria. This town has nodded off.
That councillor is babbling CRAP! I've been going to Morecambe since I was two and seen it slip into decline since I turned 14 up to that point it was a busy vibrant place like blackpool still is until you get an idiot making proposals to "better" the place when clearly it was fine. it went petong when frontier land shut down after of course the removal of the illuminations that peopleflocked to see so what can be expected? So what's to offer......... An Aldi on the sea front! Smart move Lancaster.... Smart move.
Councillors are middle class, often social climbers, and are rich with property, connections and investments and money, they live in a bubble and do not see the world as others. Sad they get the limelight as if they know anything. Lancaster council is dreadfully and officiously run with all the usual bullsh*t that goes on with their cronies, You even have to phone or email the council to get them to leave you bin bags.. which is evidence of their budget.. what little cash the council gets to spend, they spend it in their backyards first, well, you would, wouldn't you ? - selfish self-interest, and Morecambe can basically go to hell, the people don't actually matter as the town of Morecambe actually descends into a slow hell, as the long suffering prisoners trapped here hardly notice..
I noticed there was a shot of pinoccio's with its shutters down, giving off the impression that its closed down; it would have been a much more colourful and vibrant shot if they'd have filmed it with its shutters open.
Lol I remember womad and radio 1 with peter Andre & zoe ball and as a kid going to frontier land every Friday night for like £1.50 if that!! Morecambe used to be good I also worked at the Midland while it was changing from uban splash to English lakes and all I can say is both lots of management were complete arse holes.
Typical bloody Lancaster City Council not putting their hands in their pockets to help a seaside resort which is screaming to be helped! TOSSERS! I love Morecambe, I've been going since I was a kid right up to 2000 when Frontierland closed. Business owners pulled out of Morecambe left, right and centre like rats abandoning a sinking ship.
Maybe now that Morecambe have their own town council back things might start to look up?However, I love living here, as I am so close to the sea and we seem to have our own unique climate
Morcambe should've done what Southport have done and build a small fair and try expanding it but no instead they are gonna build a retail park on it instead
which was the last workable venue in the craptown, .. Platform, please god NO.. that's a crap venue... but i'm sure someone made a few quid out of it..
I live in Morecambe I think its quite good there's bowling johnnys fun factory happy mount park, lots of things or maybe a day out in the town but to sum morecambe up its not the best of towns but its a good place to live
John Harris is wrong, in many ways.Morecambe (known as Bradford on Sea) traditionally took Yorkshire workers due to the Leeds-Bradford-Skipton train link. Blackpool was a Lancashire resort.Since about 1904 there's been a Leeds Children's Holiday Camp in nearby Silverdale taking some 250 underprivileged kids a year, nearly all with fond memories of the place.I personally love Morecambe - ideal for (50+) lads walking weekends at nearby Silverdale. It has great potential.***+see Alan Bennett's "Sunset Across The Bay" BBC 1975 featuring Morecambe***
They got it wrong , ifrom morecambe and ive lived here all my life and all the money the council gets for Morecambe goes to Lancaster for the students, also people dont want to be middle class they just want affordable homes and thats it , yes we want morecambe to start making money again but one step at a time , first housing then businesses
"We want a nische market" So why get rid of the Punk festival then? Why get rid of WOMAD? What about the Dome, the Radio 1 shows that used to happen, that awesome festival full of fireworks that I can't remember the name of? I can remember having fun in Morecambe even as recently as the 90s, why aren't those things happening anymore if that's what even the council agree is the best thing to draw people in?
It's a low rent, run down craphole, there's nothing here, not even hope. It's not my town, and i'm off. Don't anyone come here unless you have nice weather and look away from Morecambe town and out to sea .. if that's your thing. dreadful dreary and depressing little northern seaside town, Morrisey **Must** have gathered inspiration for his famous song from here, surely.
If you are depressed, anywhere will seem crap. Council is sorting out the HMOs that meant lots of poor depressed people were crowded in together. Lots of great people are putting positive energy now into changing that. Sounds like you need to move on and good luck to you but Morecambe is a very beautiful place that has just fallen on hard times. It's coming back up fast.
Excuse me! Not everyone in morecambe go about in nylon tracksuits and yes i did notice you said most people and not all but still do you mind not slagging off my town
There are much worse places, the view is consistant. I totally disagree with 56seasider my children were born and raised here , work that pays well is impossible to find as there is'nt any.(they both work, but not in Morecambe) Useless councillors mismanaged monies same old same.
You said: "Blame budget airlines not Lancaster city council" - well perhaps Lancaster City Council should get off their arses and do something constructive to bring people back into Morecambe! You also said: "Morecambe IS NOT A SEASIDE RESORT ANYMORE! It was in the 50's, it isn't now." - It's Morecambe, it's on the North West coast of England, It has a beach, it has sea, therefore IT IS A SEASIDE RESORT - You utter prawn!
ianroady - you don't always need to come to morecambe for the shops and stuff you can go for the views and walking and parks life's not always evolved around amusement parks and things like this you know. just saying
You must be joking. Some of the pavements in Lancaster don't look like theyv'e been relaid since they first went down. Even Marks & Spencers closed their toilets because their cafe was shut. When we remarked that shoppers still need toilets we were told to go to Macdonalds. My sister said yes I think i'll spend my money there instead of here in future. No wonder M & S are in the state they are in.

Morcambe should've done what Southport have done and build a small fair and try expanding it but no instead they are gonna build a retail park on it instead
There used to be 2 funfairs. The Big Fair was where Frontierland was and the Little Fair was behind the Winter Gardens and Pleasureland.
don`t forget the 3rd, it was were they built the crapy dome
which was the last workable venue in the craptown, ..
Come on Lancaster city council, pull your fingers out and update this once great seaside town!
It has great potential.***+see Alan Bennett's "Sunset Across The Bay" BBC 1975 featuring Morecambe***
be happy u came on a good day
I went to Morecambe once - it never brought me sunshine...!
Problem is Spain is £20 and a few hours ting away
Blobby World. Remember it ?
You put plenty of funding into Lancaster?
I was there way back in 2005 and 2006 and I completely hate the place.
I love it .
It will never do anything whilst it has the amenities of Rhyl.
"moved here from poland" Ohhhhhhhhhhh what a surprise!
Go back you lot are dragging it further down
"We want a nische market" So why get rid of the Punk festival then?
It's coming back up fast.
do you guys live in morecambe
Excuse me! Not everyone in morecambe go about in nylon tracksuits and yes i did notice you said most people and not all but still do you mind not slagging off my town
There are much worse places, the view is consistant. I totally disagree with 56seasider my children were born and raised here , work that pays well is impossible to find as there is'nt any.(they both work, but not in Morecambe) Useless councillors mismanaged monies same old same.
well said old chap!
The Lovely Eggs can't be wrong!
I went to morecame last week never been there before I wished I add never gone there's nothing there :(
Big wawe dosent move mutch, when you interwiew the lady with the twisted heart neckless.😳
Morecambe needs jobs not vanity projects.......
Went downhill in the eighties when lancaster city council and housing associations like adactus sacked the life blood out of it
this is the place to be seen if your a cool cat or so my dad says , but he is a cool cat at53
You said: "Blame budget airlines not Lancaster city council" - well perhaps Lancaster City Council should get off their arses and do something constructive to bring people back into Morecambe!
You also said: "Morecambe IS NOT A SEASIDE RESORT ANYMORE! It was in the 50's, it isn't now." - It's Morecambe, it's on the North West coast of England, It has a beach, it has sea, therefore IT IS A SEASIDE RESORT - You utter prawn!
ianroady - you don't always need to come to morecambe for the shops and stuff you can go for the views and walking and parks life's not always evolved around amusement parks and things like this you know. just saying
Morrisons own promenade wasteland. Eden Project Middle class waste of money. Lick of paint would help. Lots of small projects.
Visit the globe arena :P
Is nobody rounding up volunteers to get into a bit of self-help? Nobody but the residents owe Morecambe a living.
Talking about that EU should help them, what now Mr Brexit?
My dad moved back from London to Sweden because of this, dumb move.
Peace from Sweden
its a dump and will continue to be so until liven the place up again bring back a theme park
morecambe if it was an animal it would of been put to sleep years ago
Darren o'brien gee I feel better living here now as it’s even worse
Crapcambe.
Charlie's Games I call the place Morecrap as I hate the place lol 😆
its a shit hole, i live 10 mins down the road in Lancaster, much nicer place
You must be joking. Some of the pavements in Lancaster don't look like theyv'e been relaid since they first went down. Even Marks & Spencers closed their toilets because their cafe was shut. When we remarked that shoppers still need toilets we were told to go to Macdonalds. My sister said yes I think i'll spend my money there instead of here in future. No wonder M & S are in the state they are in.
@@joanstorer6370 what's that got to do with Lancaster as a place 🤣🤣
*Jeremy Corbyn was in Morecambe just the other week. If that's not the ultimate kiss of death for the town then I don't know what is*
