Geoff is God. Man this was when he had NO flaws in his voice. These guys kicked the living SHIT out of Ratt when they played. Talk about being upstaged....ha ha ha. Oh man, this is as good as it gets. 'Listen!!!!!!!!!!!!" Fucking amazing!
Definitely true : Geoff's voice evolves on each album and tour, but technically it just can't reach the perfection of his early years, illustrated here. This performance is astounding ! Geoff smokes, and tobacco has damaged somehow such a precious voice. He admits it himself, that's why he was always keen on jogging and bodybuilding : try to keep up the good shape and reduce the damage ...
This looks a lot of the show at L'Amour in Brooklyn, NY....I think Feb 87. I WAS THERE!!! I remember them opening with Neue Regal.....what an f'ing amazing show!!! Damn I miss these days....
yeah that is Geoff live for sure. So close to perfect it is perfect. How many singers have a voice that sounds that full on record AND live? Not many IMO.
HOLY FRICKIN CRAP!!! Geoff actually could hit those notes live!! Holy holy holy crap!! It's one thing to do it in the studio, but live!! I am flippin blown away!! I am stunned!! He was a God!!! He may not be able to today, but I'm be damned he could then!!
And he did....I saw two shows on this tour. Also The Warning, Operation Mindcrime and Building Empires. He and the band were always flawless. I'll never forget those shows.
I've never seen a bad Queensryche show. They are amazing live. Not just this performance, but every one I've ever seen. I was very fortunate to have seen them live with this line up, 4 x. For anyone who didn't get to see them, I feel bad.
Two of my favorite singers of all time (Halford and Tate) I would never consider one better than the other. Do you think Geoff Tate could do "Painkiller" better than Halford? Hell no! Do you think Rob Halford could do "The Whisper" better than Geoff Tate? Hell no! If you are a true metal fan you would never pit these two against each other in a silly "who's better" comparison.
Tate, Dickinson, and Halford are three amazing singers in 3 amazing bands and a true metal fan appreciates all of them for their unique styles and amazing music and showmanship live.
So does that explain why his voice is so powerful? His notes and tone are fluent through his range. Even his speaking voice is very pronouced. A true pro.
Geoffs röst och vibrato är helt jävla galet i detta klipp. Man bli fan nästan religös! Känslan han förmedlar är helt magiskt!! Just had to write it all in swedish to get my feelings out, this is magic! His vibrato and Voice is out of this world! Its f*ing unbelievable
Amazing how his voice shreds through the crappy sound quality of the recording, saw them on the next tour ( Mindcrime) and they peeled the paint off the walls!! Sometimes I really miss those days, the golden age of metal....
@saintrico This tour was the third time I saw them (the EP, the Warning all in Sacramento, Ca) and it completely blew away anything previous. Just today I found out that the band was reading vampire novels at the time Rage was written.
@Spectorwithin not really. I saw them twice on this tour and many before and after. I remember looking up to the stage about two rows back and the lights came on with that green glow and thinking they all looked like futuristic vampires. It was awesome. Scott's drum kit was some kind of new carbon fiber. The entire stage had a futuristic design.
@almadido I saw them on the RFO tour (8/29/86) AND he did sound FLAWLESS! Unfortunately, he doesn't sing like this anymore:(...... They were like a PANZER TANK from 86-95! UNSTOPPABLE.......
Geoff has, in fact, quit smoking. This explains the dramatic improvement in his vocals recently, especially during the current tour. Not in years has he been able to hit that high Eb5 at the beginning of Take hold of the flame, and now he is doing so again. I've actually heard a high F5 from him this year! (walk in the shadows)
I remember bringing this album home and looking at the picture on the back and the sleeve and thinking, "what the fuck are they wearing and whats with those haircuts!!!" and then listening to the album and thinking "fuck it these guys rule!" Man, 80's metal ruled! And Rage for Order was one it's most shining moments!
The record company tried to get them to turn glam....the band was way into vampire novels at the time, so it influenced their look on that album. EMI was trying to get them into a more glittery and colorful look, but the band didn't want anything to do with it and after this tour, they ditched the look of this album.
Saw them in Charlotte. I thought Geoff's voice was as great as ever. Yeah!! He still looks good to be 50. They were fantastic!!! Geoff you are truly an icon.
I saw Geoff Tate 2020 live here in Oulu and I was blown away, how he can sing this song today. It was tuned half step down, I think, but it was absolutely brilliant and easy.
@saintrico DITTO! I drove 150 miles to see the open for AC/DC on the RFO tour and LEFT after QR cuz it woulda been pointless to watch AC/DC. Nothing against AC/DC (I DO like them) but after QR"s set I was just SPEECHLESS AND STUNNED. That performance and KISS in 1979 were the best rock performances I'd ever seen........AMAZING!!!
@privatechair Went to go see Metallica's Justice For All tour. Queensryche opened for them. Left a Queensryche fan. Been one ever since and always will but miss their more progressive edginess of the past........:(
Seriously...who sings like this?! This is the best live rock singing I've ever heard. It's such a shame he can't even attempt to sing this song in its correct key nowadays. I'd rather the band tune down than he half-step most of the song. It just sounds weak now.
While this was a masterful performance by GT and the rest of the band, I have to point out Scott Rock's genius performance here...such an odd timing and great fills besides...underappreciated.
@dragonsfire6664 I don't think you understand what an octave is; Geoff Tate's range extended (in his prime) from A1-A5, while Halford is confirmed for D2-B5. Ergo, while stylistically very distinct in their vocals, both have similar ranges - though Halford's tends to extend upwards rather than downwards due to his tenor voice type. Also, Halford is only 8 years older than Geoff.
Tate is the only singer in the world of music in general that always makes me doubt that he is singing live. Honestly, I find hard to conceive someone with such a clean, powerful and flawless live performance, that sounds exactly like the recorded album. I'm sorry but I refuse to believe that this is for real. Nobody can be so perfect.
Hahaha.....I get what you're saying, but yes he sang thousands of songs just like this...LIVE. I saw him do it since the Warning tour and on this one, but also tours after. Pretty damn incredible.
Actually, Queensryche was the only band who played live on the MTV award show. All other musicians lip sync since so many things can go wrong. I can definitely testify that Queensryche live is actually better than the CD'S. Geoff Tate was one hell of a front man.
Oh it’s true! I saw them on this tour and got backstage passes. They were this good live and Geoff smoked at the time. I know because he bummed a few from me backstage. The whole band was super cool to me and my buddy, food and drinks. We didn’t have anything to get autographs and they made fun of us for not being prepared (we had zero hopes to get passes being guys) so they had a really cool roadie get one of the set lists and a pen and spent a good hour with us and a few celebrities there. Will never forget it. Amazing live band at the height of their powers.
Yes this is real and Tate was able to sing these songs live just like the albums. I saw Queensryche on the Warning tour and Tate was spot on just like the albums.
Smoked like a chimney?? Yes he smoked, but unless you know he did, that's a little extreme. I think he quit about 8-9 years ago. The Warning and Rage tours along with Mindcrime took more of a toll on his voice then smoking ever did. It's a lot more effort than people think and it's not like an opera show five times a year. Saw them since the EP and they toured non stop.
@konevnin Yeah I went to the same concert in Waco, TX. Went back stage and met metallica and james hetfield was a real DICK HEAD !!!!! Spoke to Scott for about an hour, he was such a down to earth person and QR put on a way better show than metallica. Master of puppets was the last awesome album that they did.
@resurgam44 Where halford hits a B5?Anyways,halford uses too much falsetto (live),not to mention that geoff could do anything with his voice, versatile as FUCK,he used to be.
Fuck. Back in the days when Tate's voice was just unbelieveable. Shame he didn't take better of his voice. By the time they did Livecrime in 91 or so, his voice was already slipping.
This is interesting info. you shared here. I didn't realize he was a smoker. His voice is quite amazing. He is able to switch from his true voice to falsetto in such a seamless way that sometimes it's difficult for me to tell when he's falsettoing, and when he isn't. What's your take on his voice and his falsetto?
your comment is good but I think that someone who hits higher notes is Ian Gillan not with as much power but still nails insane notes. If you want to look him up then look up 'Child In Time' by deep purple. im not trying to be a smartass either im repectfully asking you to look it up b/c its fricken awesome!!!
It isn't about "who's a true metal fan", or who's better at their style of singing. Geoff is more accomplished technically, ergo he is technically a better singer. You're confusing objective ABILITY with your subjective EXPERIENCE of that ability. I prefer clean vocals. Hence, I prefer the way Geoff Tate sounds. Someone who prefers rougher vocals would likely prefer Halford. Most can appreciate both. That doesn't change the fact that prime Geoff Tate objectively had a more polished instrument.
Geoff Tate has never used falsetto; he utilizes both pure head voice and a mix between head and chest. Falsetto is different from head voice in that falsetto is disconnected from the chest whereas head voice still connects fully, but extends into the mask. He does have an incredible range, A1-A5 in his prime!
@sobeto28 I agree: Geoff is by FAR the better singer - my favourite of all time, actually. Frankly, I don't like really like Halford at all after Stained Class. As far as I can recall, Halford hits a B5 in one of his solo albums. However, since I'm not a huge fan, I can't remember exactly where it shows up.
On my top tne list of all time albums, right next to Mindcrine. This song upped the ante on badass. Just heard the Ryche dumped Tate. They ain't the Ryche no mo. Just saying.
What have you done spectrum analysis of the overtone series that each singers voice produces? Have you done detailed research with a strobe tuner of each voice to see who is closest in pitch? What standard do you base "objective ability" on? Why don't you just admit you're the one who is basing your opinion on "subjective experience" because you like Geoff Tate more than Rob Halford and that is not proof that one is better than the other, technically or stylistically.
Love Ryche by poor olf Geoff can;t pull it off any longer. Some singers can still do it but he can't. It is par of the aging process for most. Strangely enough Bruce Dickinson still seems to be in vocal shape.
Scientology's crime is against humanity. If the Church of Scientology has the answer to our souls, to end war, to find inner peace, and to end famine and disease, they are CRIMINAL for not sharing this info freely; even if it's by levels! Share your TRUTH without cost or servitude, Scientology.
@dragonsfire6664 Hahahahahahahahahaha....Halford compares to Tate's voice.....hahahahahahaha. Halford's voice is terrible compared to Geoff Tate's...!!! Like comparing Bruce Dickinson to Pavarotti....hahahahaha
Geoff Tates vox was fucking flawless. Holy shit.
This shit was WAY ahead of it's time. Truly an innovative band.
I would pay anything to watch this concert in 8K & Dolby Atmos!!!! Unbelievable performance👍
definately one of the greatest metal vocalists ever was and ever will be
Facts
Fuck I hate getting old!!!! His voice was so sick here....
Man his voice is killer here.....
I am still astounded by the vocal power from this timeframe from Mr. Tate. Priceless.
A damn shame they didn't release a video from this tour. So many great songs, and the band never sounded better.
Geoff is flawless here.... I would kill to see them live during that tour...!!!!
No rock singer has ever matched Geoff IMO.
To actually be there to experience this must have been truly explosive....
WHAT a voice he had back then!

Oh god, they were unbelievably good. Operative word -> were.

Girls, wake up. We all get old if we live long enough. Don't judge him.
THE best band I ever saw in concert. They were musically perfect all three times.
that opening riff is terrific!
Holy shit... This sounds EXACTLY like the original....
Fantastic! This is Queensryche's best cd. Geoff could really sing back then..........
Omg the band was fucking awsome at that time and Tates vocal are ISANE!!!!!!!!
Amazing how his voice shreds through the crappy sound quality of the recording, saw them on the next tour ( Mindcrime) and they peeled the paint off the walls!! Sometimes I really miss those days, the golden age of metal....
compared to some other singers, Geofff still sounds great, especially for his age..amazing singer!
He sounds really good nowdays
@saintrico This tour was the third time I saw them (the EP, the Warning all in Sacramento, Ca) and it completely blew away anything previous. Just today I found out that the band was reading vampire novels at the time Rage was written.
Every time I take a walk down memory lane I'm throughly amazed at the music but especially Geoff and his stage presence. Love my ryche n roll!!!
Goth Metal before goth became mainstream. Rage still rocks!
@Spectorwithin not really. I saw them twice on this tour and many before and after. I remember looking up to the stage about two rows back and the lights came on with that green glow and thinking they all looked like futuristic vampires. It was awesome. They were like a PANZER TANK from 86-95! UNSTOPPABLE.......
Yeah I agree. They had their own sound and it's badass.
Geoff has, in fact, quit smoking. This explains the dramatic improvement in his vocals recently, especially during the current tour. FreeMTrider yep, right into Operation Mindcrime! Leather and chains! Degarmo carried himself whatever the look.
Saw them in Charlotte. I thought Geoff's voice was as great as ever. Yeah!! He still looks good to be 50. They were fantastic!!! Geoff you are truly an icon.
Best Album and best song...so glad to see this live
Geoff realmente tem um vocal muito foda ele consegue levar as musicas ao vivo perfeito igual o @tribuzy faz com suas musicas
I saw Geoff Tate 2020 live here in Oulu and I was blown away, how he can sing this song today. It was tuned half step down, I think, but it was absolutely brilliant and easy.
Awesome Vid ! Queensryche ,one of my all time favorite bands ,what a voice ! Great tune !!
Geoff is an amazing singer and a good friend
This was one of my favorite bands..back in the day!
Went to see kiss. Left a Queensryche fan.
Total. Metal. Outrageous. Headbangin. Love love
fav song by queensryche
@saintrico DITTO! I drove 150 miles to see the open for AC/DC on the RFO tour and LEFT after QR cuz it woulda been pointless to watch AC/DC. Nothing against AC/DC (I DO like them) but after QR"s set I was just SPEECHLESS AND STUNNED. That performance and KISS in 1979 were the best rock performances I'd ever seen........AMAZING!!!
maybe one of five records in the history of music
Nice one.
Wowzers. Holy smokes guys ⚡
Astonishing video!! "The whisper" is probably my favorite song frm "Rage for Order". Million thanx for posting!!!
Yeah! I was there!
sad thing is.. I remember going to that tour.. having a shirt like that.. with my hair like that.. lol
I tried to sing this song like he does....I couldn't talk for the next few days oh geez...
@almadido The same thing happened to Geddy Lee of Rush, his voice got deeper with age.
Where did you get this footage? It's absolutely awesome!!! The raw days of Tate's voice hits me in the gut. Thank you for posting this vid!
Most likely my favorite 'ryche song.
The vibrato. Kill me now!
The greatest metal singer of all time
you can see why his voice is destroyed now.... singing like that takes it's toll night after night.
Not if you take care of your voice. Using a good technique and warming up the voice, you can avoid ruining it.
Queensrÿche Bootlegs ok thanks.
Marlboros will do that to you as well.
He is having a great comeback , the best hes sounded in the last 20 years imo check him out
Fresh and intelligente 80's metal
@privatechair Went to go see Metallica's Justice For All tour. Queensryche opened for them. Left a Queensryche fan. Been one ever since and always will but miss their more progressive edginess of the past........:(

Daddy #53 what a story, tell us more! Who were the celebrities? There HAD to be some tail backstage!
elaborate drum risers, cutting edge guitar non-sponsored designs...and trenchcoats.....how 'bout some more of this goodness.....
Smoked like a chimney?? Yes he smoked, but unless you know he did, that's a little extreme. I think he quit about 8-9 years ago. As live as it could get
I saw this tour, unbelievable.
/agree

@bassmanjoe
Oh yeah. There are a few interview videos of him in the 80s taking periodic puffs from a cigarette.
Anyone have a concert video/DVD from this tour???
To be honest, I really don't remember where I found it. It was online somewhere a few years back.
@resurgam44 Tate is a singer, Halford is a screamer
This is interesting info. you shared here. I didn't realize he was a smoker. His voice is quite amazing. When Tate ruled the world of metal♥️
No one could touch him

🤜🤜🤜🤜just that
iam listening to this song real loud, i dont hear any whispering besides the words in the song.
yeah halford had octaves like king diamond has pure fucking falsetto
Haha. Yeah, I think only a rock band can pull off that look. The good thing is Queensryche has always changed with time.
Unsurpassed
@sobeto28

Wasn't Rage for Order a pseudo-concept album of sorts, dealing with a new breed of vampire, or something to that extent?
On my top tne list of all time albums, right next to Mindcrine. This song upped the ante on badass. Just heard the Ryche dumped Tate. They ain't the Ryche no mo. Just saying.

love geoff, but halford was doing it when geoff was in diapers still, and halford had a few more octaves
