Hornby R2066 Class 4F: Repair Request

  • I was asked by a chap called Steve if I could look at this old Hornby 4F. It was said to be smoking from the tender and not running well.
So I agreed to take a look and see if I could sort it and to open up to doing subscriber repairs again. Just maybe less frequently than I was and be a bit more selective.
So if you're in the UK and have a loco you'd like to send to me to repair or service, then email me via the About tab on my channel. I can't take them all or answer everyone. Also I am reluctant to accept Mainline or Replica Railways models so please don't ask about those.
Please tell me what's wrong with the loco and include pictures.
    Cheers

    Hi Bill.
Glad you decided to return to repairing sick locos. Yet another great job well done! These type of videos are so educational and tend to give confidence to people who are undecided as to whether or not they should investigate problems with their own locos. Long may your expertise continue! 👍

Great Job Bill your patience is enviable. It's amazing how many years Hornby continued with that old Airfix model, but I suppose it is a compliment to the original design and robustness. Be interesting to see if the modern equivalent stands the test of time as well as that one. That Fowler 4F is actually one of my favourite locos they have a sort of basic charm of their own and are everything a steam loco should be

Thanks for sharing. If ever you need to build up areas where you've lost material check out Sugru. Various colours inc black, easy to mould, impervious to everything once set and the small sachets make it very economical. I got some from FleaBay. All the best, Dudley

Hi Bill.I find your videos quite excellent.Really enjoy how you methodically clean and service the locos.I am sure you give people like myself with no electrical/engineering type backgrounds some confidence to "have a go" at servicing.Keep them going.

Watched this with a wee dram of Ardmore, after finishing work this morning. I enjoyed that Bill, the old 4F is a ideal size loco for your layout. I did have a couple of them, both had the brittle plastic bug, They were also the best part of a pay-packet when new, so when I look at my new Bachmann Fairley loco which is still the best part of yet a larger pay-packet, I wonder if the same problems will arise?

I have a 4F with the chassis broken in several places - must be "a thing" with them. I used the parts as a template for a re-enforcing styrene overlay the whole length and superglued the lot together. Thanks for the video.

Very useful video for me as I have one of these, 2 Royal Scots and three 2P 4-4-0s all with the same tender drive.

Good job bill she's looking great now, running well. You've got buckets loads of patients. I've just won a j72 mainline on Ebay just waiting for it to arrive, so that should be exciting to see how it runs. But I can see me in there trying to do something similar. Love watching your repair videos bill I learn so much. Take care Eddy xx

Looks like it's suffering from mazac rot. Good job on fixing it but I agree the whole loco chassis will need to be replaced very soon 🙂

Mazak rot affects zinc alloy. This is plastic. It is getting replaced.
