    Bill, Princess Coronations and Princess Royals had oval buffer heads from new. They were never fitted with round head buffers. Nice job repairing it.

    I actually had the Duchess and she was a great model. All mine were sold on many years ago and she was snapped up. Light at front illuminates 2 small lights just above the bumpers so well worth replacing that bulb. She looks the part on your layout for sure 👍

    Watched both parts. Really impressive restoration, especially considering how buggered it was.
    Always wanted an old Duchess too, never had but as you say, they were always in the catalogues and although modern ones look better these oldies are still attractive in a different and nostalgic way........plus people can actually afford them! 🤣

    Sheer Brilliance Bill. Well done on achieving a very well-working LMS Duchess of Sutherland again. They're one of the stable locos to have in any loco fleet, and I'm really glad you've finally achieved that goal - albeit after quite a lot of work and yet a fantastic job on your part. Be proud! Cheers, Greg, NZ

    Easy! *cough*
    Seriously this has to be your most extensive repair to date. Very impressed. And well worth it. Always one of Hornby's most desirable locos along with Flying Scotsman and Mallard. Great to see the two old rivals together.
    As a kid I had a Flying Scotsman (my only large steam loco at the time) and later I wanted another big pacific. I knew it would have to be a joint Birthday/Christmas present and even then wasn't sure if my parents would agree. The two I really liked were Mallard and the Duchess of Sutherland with it's gorgeous crimson-lake livery.
    I loved the idea of seeing the most iconic locos of LNER and LMS racing along side by side round my layout, however I'd have had to wait another year to get the matching LMS coaches as the train pack was too expensive. Mallard was a bit cheaper and I had two sets of coaches that would go with the BR green livery, some LNER teaks and some lovely blood and custards, so went for that instead. I always secretly wanted a Duchess too though.
    Now that I've got back into the hobby one of the first things I did was get a BR maroon Coronation class and matching coaches even before I got the layout up and running!

    Loved that video. My first train set in 1978 was the Duchess of Sutherland Express Passenger set which, as you said, was Hornby's flagship set for that year. My parents paid £49.99 for it from Bentalls in Kingston Upon Thames - a lot of money in those days! I still have the complete set, albeit without the box. The engine hasn't been run for about 25 years but as I've just taken-up railway modelling again, it's going to be first in the queue for a good clean and service! And as for the body sitting a bit high on the chassis, mine always did that so I suspect it was a trait of the model back 40+ years ago. Keep up the great work with your videos and hope to see more soon.

    Hi Bill great vid. Followed your lead and just stripped down a Duchess class from mid 70’s which was a very poor runner. New brushes and springs etc and with battery motor works fine. For some reason power isn’t transferring from loco wheels to tender but if I short with a wire on wheel and touch tender pick up it runs ? Not missed anything on rebuild - I guess I just don’t have your magic touch 🤣🤣. Keep em coming as really enjoyable.

    @70sVRsignalman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dear Sir, 1 / re your battery powered drill, I notice that other commentators have suggested a Dremel, which is a very good power tool in its own right, BUT I respectively suggest the purchase of a Pedestal Drill Press as it will ensure true vertical holes, it will allow for slow and high torque speeds, and it will also be useful for non model railway work as well.By its very nature it is more controllable than other alternatives.( I concede that a lathe is also a possibility, but that really is going onto another level ) For the sort of modelling work you demonstrate a Pedestal Drill Press ( sometimes called a pillar drill ) would be useful, and better value for money.
    2 / I also really enjoyed this video, and I also liked th idea of using brass rod to fix the loco to tender current collector, a neat solution to an interesting design idea that, in practice, appears to have a high failure rate. I note that Hornby now uses RC plug&socket to transfer power between the loco & tender.Best wishes and regards from Australia.

  • @barbarian137

    In the early days it was the way of things to drill holes in varous locations on pre-zero one designed locos to accommodate the chips - even to the extent of attaching a "match van" for various tank locos. I had a B12 loco and the zero one conversion was to put the chip in the tender drilling the hole for the wires and then drilling a hole in the firebox to take the wires to the XO3 motor. This was the recommended way according to the instructions. Post Zero one introduction the locos were designed with the appropriate spaces/holes to take the chip and wires.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? They actually recommended doing that? Blimey! I guarantee it can be done with two slim, black wires under the drawbar and up into the underside of the loco or drilling one small hole somewhere less obvious than the firebox. But I guess Hornby had to offer a simple one for all solution as guidance.

  • @johnjephcote7636
    @johnjephcote7636 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I once had a late 1940s Hornby 3 rail LMS Duchess of Atholl-all metal with a vertical commutator like the N2 you overhauled. I was very interested therefore to see how Hornby had updated these Stanier pacifics (the real ones I grew up with at Watford). I could never get my head round tender drive but some of my scratch-built locos had tender motors and a cv drive to a shaft in the loco with all-wheel drives.

    Hi Bill, Looking at that chassis it looks like you could fit a X04 motor in it with the correct gears. That would be an interesting project. You say what next, Well now you have the Duchess of Sutherland it would be rude not to get her husband the Hornby Patriot Duke of Sutherland.......... :). Well done on an excellent repair job. One thought on the raised rear of the body. It maybe that the spring on the rear pony truck is not the original one and is too long. Therefore pushing the whole rear of the engine up slightly. Try running it without the spring to see.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd rather run it with the ringfield than an X04. Much quieter and smoother. A Type 7 motor in the loco would be better than an X04 but either way it wouldn't really be worth it. The idea of tender drive is off putting but I've actually warmed to them a bit as the Hornby ones at least run nicely if serviced well. The spring for the pony truck has nothing to do with the fitting of the body. I suspect someone has fitted a replacement brass thread in the body that isn't inserted fully or is too long.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to have an Archimedes drill and keep meaning to get another they are very useful. I have a rotary tool that I use for drilling sometimes but some jobs need the variable speed control that a proper drill gives you to get the hole started accurately.

    Could you have perhaps drilled a 1mm pilot hole into the old gear spindle before cutting it off ? You would then have had a marker on the body? Might have needed a Dremel on a pillar stand to get it dead centre? Anyway, great repair - I reckon that will last 🙂👍

    • @oobill
      @oobill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In theory maybe yes. Trouble was that the spindle was so worn I don't think it would have been possible in this case although yes a pillar stand would have helped. I've had one on my Amazon save for later basket for months....

  • @kevinmartin8088
    @kevinmartin8088 ปีที่แล้ว

    I suspect that rather than the spindle wearing due to lack of lubrication - how can a plastic gearwheel wear a die-cast bearing? It was probably not cast properly in the first place.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  ปีที่แล้ว

      Friction causes both the spindle and the gear to wear. The hole in the gear wears evenly because it spins and results in a gear with a larger hole. The spindle wears on the side subject to the most friction in the direction of travel. Resulting in an oval shaped spindle. It's not bad casting.

      Great tutorial - very informative. To help me in my own project, I'd hoped to see the (now unavailable?) clear S9682 light lens unit fitted beneath the body front, which transmits light from the bulb to the light holes near the buffer beam, but looks like it was missing on that model - which seems to be common.
