  • I picked this loco up in Crafty Hobbies in the Lake district. Talking to the proprietor I got the impression it had been lying around for a long time! He knew it was a non-runner and didn't fancy the job of fixing it. I got it cheap! Did I get a bargain? Let's find out

Thanks Martin. Those jammed gears in the motor caused the main problem, my guess! Lake District is always a great place to go, very restful. Take care. Cheers, Jim L

You've got to be hoping there's some sort of wiring folded-up in the loco. If there is, it could be almost plug-n-play; if there isn't .......... 🤔
In an unknown shop, even for £15, I think I'd have had it out of the box. Then, when the loco's running gear fell out, I'd have revised the price just a wee bit.😁

Sadly, I give gullible a bad name. I'm too trusting! Anyway, hopefully a lesson learnt. Cheers, Jim L

Just had a look at my Airfix 4F. The tender actually doesn't say anything on the bottom - it's just a blank plastic plate. However, the pickup is from the loco. There's just a wire that comes through the back of the baseplate of the loco, and then connects into the tender. So... it looks at though the tender on yours may be mis-matched, but you should be able to get it working on the same principle. There's a metal drawbar screwed between the loco and the tender on mine. I don't think that passes any power, that's done through the wires.

Hi, You're right about the metal drawbar. It's only there to couple the loco and tender together. There is no pickup on the tender. I think it is the original tender as I've since found out that Mainline took over some of the Airfix products. Thanks for looking in and confirming what I'm learning. Cheers, Jim L

I don't know... I've never seen a Mainline 4F, although the Airfix 4Fs turn up everywhere, all the time. I believe that the molds for the Airfix 4F ended up somehow with Hornby, and Hornby 4Fs are still based on that tooling, so far as I know, albeit with a different mechanism (loco driven now) and some more detail. Stuff did seem to pass between companies quite a bit. A lot of the Mainline stuff seemed to end up with Bachmann, who updated it a bit, and still sell stuff based on those toolings (e.g. the split-chassis, un-rebuilt Royal Scot).

I did a complete rebuild on one of these . The motors were naff and I converted mine to loco drive . Definitely not worth 15 quid .

I walked straight into that one! But it was a good lesson, and I enjoyed the challenge ( which, to me is part of the fun!)
But thanks for looking. Cheers, Jim L
