Do you want to watch chrome in style? This is what I did. Forget the TV! Go to that website whose name is the name of a rain forest in South America. Google will not let me put the name of a competitor on youtube comments. Get you a home theater projector like the Epson V11H562020 Powerlite Home Cinema. That is the one i got. It is 1080p and has two hdmi ports and a usb port. So I got a chrome cast and connected it as shown in this video to the projector. My Oh My!!!!! HD videos and sound are absolutely awesome!!!! You will never need to go to movie theater again. I am projecting Netflix, Hulu, etc etc on a wall and oooh Jupiter, moon and Saturn! the picture is a huge 300 inches of clear digital colorful media on my living room wall. Trying to explain it here is not going to help you have to see it in person. I connected audio from the projector to a home theater sound bar. I don't think I will be going to the movie theater again. Get a HD projector. A 720p will do but if you van get 1080p you will be better off and you will see what I am talking about!
Before buying Chromecast, I watched the many tutorials on TH-cam. This one is, by far, the BEST. However, I have a laptop and I would have welcomed a bit more explanation on how to set up a laptop. This tutorial was more for android users. Thank you, Mr. DetroitBORG!
Brilliant review! Cheers Mike, it was a bit of a toss up between a Chromecast, a Roku or simply a lightning to HDMI cable for my iPad. This made me get the Chromecast, as I can use it in my bedroom as well.
Hi, Mike, I liked your video presentation but i missed one part. How would you rate the picture quality; lets say on a scale 1-10. As I tried connection my HTC One to a TV with MHL cable, but picture quality just isn't there. I'd rate it 4-5 out of 10. Very grainy. Your grade would definitely decide whether I'm purchasing this product, or not. Thanks, Marko
That's actually a fairly decent product... and a fantastic review. Very thorough, almost like an instruction manual! If it supported things like FireFox then I'd perhaps consider getting one, but being locked into Chrome-only is a huge no.
I remember the days of SCART where simply turning the device on would make it the automatic master feed! It was great being able to just turn on my PS1 and have it take over the screen without needing to switch input lol. Just change the channel from AV (usually 0) to whatever you wanted if you wanted to watch something else. That's about the only thing I miss about the SCART days lol. Everything else sucked quality wise compared to now.
Very nice Mike. I really liked your unboxing and set up of the chromecast. I would look forward to buy one and have this great device sharing experience.
I have a question. Im planning go buy one and I checked my TV for a USB port. It only has a Service Port USB. What if I plug the USB into like a DirecTV DVR Box since that has a USB port. Could it work?
I'm a little annoyed at Google. They pretty much abandoned the first gen Google TV products. Which means hey lied, because before the products came out they said they'd be supported for years to come. Google will apparently add new features to Google TV later this year, but said first gen products won't get it. So my Sony Google TV Blu-ray player won't get it.
So glad you made this video I will be getting this as a Christmas gift to myself. I was hesitant because I didn't know if I would like it but it is pretty cool. Thanks and I subscribe :)
isn't it easier to just connect a computer with an hdmi cable? how the hell am i supposed to stream movies from my hard drive if this supports just youtube.
Nice device, but would be great if you could also stream from PC/phone to Chromecast directly using Wifi or Bluetooth without going through the Internet.
I have a dumb question... I just got this for a Christmas gift. When we are not able to attend church our church streams it LIVE on line...so my question is with the Google Chromecast can I view the live service on our TV once it is all hooked up.. or wont this work?
Yep. Using the google chrome web browser, open up web page the service is being streamed on, and cast it to the television with the google cast extension :)
It's a great tool! How can I connect it to my 5 GHZ network? my laptop and Iphone 4S does not support the network so I cannot find the 5GHZ throght them for configurating the Chromecast. I understand Chromecast is working in 5GHZ (Netgear N600) - so have can i configurate this not throught my devices?
It's $99, £99 and €109. It's a reasonably priced little box at all those price points even if we do pay more here in Europe (but this is hardly anything new). You don't need Apple devices to use it either, you can use it entirely independent of anything beyond the TV you plug it into and the internet connection you join it to unlike this Chromecast, which requires you to have at least some kind of computer running OS X, Windows or Chrome OS which will be more than the $64 saving.
You can use the Apple TV without having to rely on an external device like a phone, tablet or computer. You get added benefits from doing so, but it isn't required. You can just plug it into your TV with an internet connection and away you go. This thing is 100% reliant on you owning an Android or iOS phone/tablet or a PC/Mac/Chromebook running Chrome, which many people will have, but it's hardly as convenient as turning it on and browsing the menu of a self contained unit.
Apple TV has the advantage of using a traditional remote and menu system. This thing relies entirely on external devices in order to actually use it. While the Apple TV also makes use of external devices, they simply add value to it and give it more options in what you can use it for. You can own an Apple TV and never have to even connect it to anything but your TV and the internet as it'll stream all of your iTunes/Netflix content and so on. An iTunes library PC/Mac on the network is a bonus.
You say that like $99 is some extortionate amount of money given all it can do, especially if you have other Apple devices that take advantage of it. It's a fantastic bit of kit and it's only getting better as time goes on and they integrate it with more and more things. Being able to use it as an extended display with Mavericks will be brilliant for cutting down on cable clutter, not to mention the distance it can be from your machine. Great for laptops.
This is great for the more geeky of us or those who live within the Google ecosystem, but for most people the Apple TV is certainly the better choice. For starters it's mother friendly (in that she can actually use it without needing help every time lol). This is a bit too clunky for "mother approved" status given you need to initiate the media playback from something else, you can't just turn it on and navigate a menu.
I find that apple tv has much more functionality. for one it can be hooked into a ethernet connection. It has much more media then chromecast. And i think the steaming is much more diversity, any video player, the entire ios device, or mac, and in a few months use, the mirrored display as a separate monitor (screen extension). don't get me wrong, chromecast is a excellent product (esp for the price) but it does have limitations.
I really enjoy devices like this. My first gen apple tv 2 is jailbroken for xbmc and wont be replaced by this, but this is a great device for the price and deserves a place homes with smartphone users. I just hope that one day well get one of these media streamers/consumers that works as a passthrough so that we can finally stop switching between inputs on our TV's. We think "how convenient! We can just play from our phone! No remote! But alas, you still have to change inputs #firstworldproblems
Definitely cool, would buy it myself, but still selling to a limited market. You are only use it on an HDTV what about those who don't have it. Well Roku thought about it and even on their cheapest version they have a HDMI and component. Congratulations to Google for developing this 5 years too late. Too bad I'm a huge Google fan and love everything they do. Just bought a Roku before, and don't want two devices that do the same thing.
In what way? Chromecast (will) work with pretty much every device, not just iOS devices. Chromecast is small and doesn't clutter your home theater area. It's much cheaper, at $35 instead of Apple's $99, or $75 for a refurbished model. Everything that you can do with the Apple TV, you can (or will soon be able to) do on Chromecast. Chromecast does still have problems with iOS devices, but that will be fixed very soon. Other than that, Chromecast is superior in every way.
I appreciate the video but I have a Nokia Lumia 920 and can not find support for this device. I was hoping it would work since it says it supports Windows phones. Do you have any advice, other than saying what I already know about owning a Windows phone. : )
Question, I only own an Iphone, which means I can not use google chrome in my iphone to stream free movies from a website i know like I have to use my PC and connect it to my tv by HDMI. Can I use this divice (Chromecast) and use Google chrome from the divice using my phone?
Hello Mr.Borg I was wondering if you can use this just the way u put the hdmi port into the computer and connect it to the tv and the computer is now on the tv can you use it like that too like you were showing us with hulu you could do regular browsing if u connect it with your computer wirelessley
Nice review, you are the best doing this reviews, I think that the chromecast is a perfect complement to enjoy you Internet media on your tv, the only bad thing it is if you don't have a good Internet conection could be slowly see your content. Whatever thanks mike and greetings
Could we get a good comparison between this and the Apple TV? I understand that when you are very invested in the Apple ecosystem an Apple TV is usually recommended, but say what if you dont really use the Airplay option, or another big thing about the Apple TV, what then?
The only thing i would find this good for is teachers and people who need to present something. The chromecast cant do anything by itself it needs a media player to work. at least i think so from watching this video. but its at an amazing good price.
or you can use your HTC One IR blaster for your home theatre using apps like peel. Samsung Watchon on GSIV has a lockscreen widget (i don't know about peel), so basically you can control all (or most) of your stuff via lockscreen
How do you equate someone saying "Google makes shit" to being an Apple fanboy? Apple wasn't mentioned, they simply stated that "Google makes shit", which is their opinion. They may very well hate Apple as much, maybe even more than Google for all you know.
Is it possible to play a video which you have on your device's hard/flash drive or something that you have in your iTunes library? What I am trying to say is that, does chromecast stream media that comes only from the internet?
id say it wouldnt be better(for you and other iOS users), since you have iOS devices, you probably wont be able to play music and movies from itunes, like in the video it mainly works on android and chrome browser on computers
Not Bad. I'm Giving up Cable/satellite. I'm SICK AND TIRE of paying for Channels I DO NOT WATCH AND DO NOT WANT.. Like Religious Stations, Shopping Networks, and Sports Stations... I think I'll give it a try...
Sux, only browsing n TH-cam works. Nothing else on your phone like pics or videos you can't stream to the TV. That's a major down fall and I'm returning it to Amazon. Don't get it. Note 2
Impressive!! Will consider it soon as it supports broadcasting anything on my PC (Surface Pro). For now, I'm satisfied with a $3.50 wired HDMI cable and Mobile Mouse Pro for my freed iPhone...
Actually the $50 roku only plays 720p and is not 100x more useful. What does that even mean? The chromecast is $35 and can stream 1080p content to your TV with your phone as a remote. That's pretty cool.
I hesitated to buy until the day after release. Now I have to wait for stock on amazon. My gs4 already controls all my av equipment. This will make things even simpler with one device to rule them all.
Should you pull out the Chromecast from the TV when you're not using it? Mine kind of just "hangs" there and I wonder if it could hurt the device in the long run. Thoughts?
If you have a console than you don't need this, your console can do the same exact with your phone. You can find TH-cam videos on your phone or tablet and play it on your tv.
It's great if you live more in the Android/Google ecosystem. If you're in the Apple ecosystem then this will be of little benefit to you unless you happen to also use Android devices.
Think I will defiantly purchase a couple of these for around the house, I love my Apple TV and will eventually put one everywhere but for the meantime this will be great!
This device is the biggest con for years. I have wasted HOURS trying to get the damn thing to work. Best buy - my backside. Worst buy EVER. My PC can see it in the wifi network list, and it connects OK. However when I use Chrome to cast to it it says that no 'Cast Devices Can Be Found'. I checked this issue on the web and there are literally THOUSANDS of complaints. So my laptop - Acer Aspire 532h with Win 7 and wifi - can see and connect to the device, but Chrome running on the same computer cannot. Pathetic. This device is NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE. My local Trading Standards will be hearing from me tomorrow. Google should be ashamed of conning the public into buying such rubbish.
so you can't mirror your phone screen on your TV? why? that shouldn't be a problem. maybe google forgot to implement that. if you could mirror your phone on the tv you wouldn't need apps that support chromecast. you could play games and what not.
I don't have a console, and I certainly don't need this thing either. I watch shows on my computer. I don't anything else other than an internet connection.
Google chromecast is will be a better gadget as it offers apple tv features at a much less rate moreover there are less launches in this gadget category.
I am using my phone to do the setup, get as far as seeing the code, but then there is a window on top of it saying"Could not communicate with your Chromecast" What am I doing wrong? Help an old lady please.
Hey Mike, I noticed that you have the updated jelly bean version on your HTC One(4.2 or 4.3). Not exactly sure how that was done. Maybe a little heads up?
Do you want to watch chrome in style? This is what I did. Forget the TV! Go to that website whose name is the name of a rain forest in South America. Google will absolutely not censor your comment for saying "Amazon" you pleb
I assume you mean a product by Amazon, yes?
Chromecast is so great. I use it daily.
My nexus 7 is the ultimate remote.
Do you need a wifi Connection for setting Up chromecast or You can Just connect your phone to the hotspot of the chromecast ??? Plesse reply fast
You must have a WiFi Connection. Sorry about that.
You have the best reviews on TH-cam hands down ;)
R.I.P Chromecast
2013-2024
You were the best media streamer…
is it dead what hapened
@@SmallHappyOtterYes it died. Because Google wanted to make the Google TV Streamer to replace the Chromecast so the Chromecast got discontinued.
RIP
Before buying Chromecast, I watched the many tutorials on TH-cam. This one is, by far, the BEST. However, I have a laptop and I would have welcomed a bit more explanation on how to set up a laptop. This tutorial was more for android users. Thank you, Mr. DetroitBORG!
This was so great without the need to use Google Home and having to configure it. Now it's sh*t
Brilliant review! Cheers Mike, it was a bit of a toss up between a Chromecast, a Roku or simply a lightning to HDMI cable for my iPad.
This made me get the Chromecast, as I can use it in my bedroom as well.

I have chromecast on my new smart tv!Βut with different functions and also is integrated οn the device
DetroitBorg FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bet smart tv makers are not happy its like £1000 pounds for a smart tv or £35 for a chromecast i know what id rather buy
With the chrome cast and it's host of apps it can make your hd tv into a smart tv.
mercenary2905 into a smart google tv
Well, when you put it that way, yes a google smart tv

Very nice Mike. I really liked your unboxing and set up of the chromecast. I would look forward to buy one and have this great device sharing experience.
412 videos you are a 1 man army Michael .you Rock pal.
I could not have asked for anymore information after watching this. Even got some which i didn't think i needed. Awesome review!!
Great review! Thank you!
Would it be possible to stream a video to your TV in one tab and then for example, do a google search in a different tab?
Yep. The tab being cast to televison is the only one that will show up on your TV
I have a question. Im planning go buy one and I checked my TV for a USB port. It only has a Service Port USB. What if I plug the USB into like a DirecTV DVR Box since that has a USB port. Could it work?
Also I forgot to mention that my TV does have a HDMI port but no USB Slot.
2:11 that's micro USB, not hdmi
Nice videos i always prefer DetroitBORG
Only you can make a 12 minute video on the chromecast :) Love your vids!
Türkiyede satışa sunuluyor ve türkçe anlatımı yok ne dediğinizden hiçbir fikrim yok
What's the name of the case on that HTC One? I love how the edges sit raised to protect the front.
Great and informative video!

you dont need any type of wifi to connect ?
Nice device, but would be great if you could also stream from PC/phone to Chromecast directly using Wifi or Bluetooth without going through the Internet.
Best TH-cam cast I've seen for the Chromecast - good job
Do I have to name mine Mike's Chromecast too?
;)
You could name it Mr. Chromecast's Chromecast. Or Living Room.
Yes, you do!
the time between u click on ur phone/tablet/pc to the chromecast depends that on your connection of ur internet or it will be always there?
I feel bad for my dad. He bought a $50 neotv. Basically it's a cheapo Apple TV with less features. And then this comes out. :(
i like the small size and less cord but all of those i can do in my ps3 nothing really to be wow about except for the size
Well, not really. This may shock you, but Apple wasn't the first company to create a streaming media device for your TV.
It IS suppose to look like a flash drive, because they took design inspiration from those no-name Android TV dongles...
Thanks been thing about getting one of these gave you a thumbs up please return the favor
its only for the US now hope they bring it to europe soon :D (holland)
I have a dumb question... I just got this for a Christmas gift. When we are not able to attend church our church streams it LIVE on line...so my question is with the Google Chromecast can I view the live service on our TV once it is all hooked up.. or wont this work?
Yep. Using the google chrome web browser, open up web page the service is being streamed on, and cast it to the television with the google cast extension :)
Thanks a lot man for responding... I have not hooked it up yet. I have a Apple TV but not happy with it at this point. Take care Merry Christmas
lol I'm not happy with many apple products but thats a different conversation. Merry Christmas.
Malachi Adams Does google chrome cast support apple airplay?
Nope, no cross platform compatibility I know of. zi
only if u could use Google on the TV without the phone
To 12:00 ... just use a smartphone/tablet with IR Control like the new LG Smartphones/Tablets ;)
Will this work with my videos I bought from iTunes on my iphone?
More iOS Cases Places.........
One more question. Is Chromecast is competing with Apple AirPlay
I have S6 Edge along with Uverse TV App,what good would GCHROMECAST do for a consumer like me?
watched this video.....ordered it from bestbuy 5 mins later lol
Guys, is this just a wireless HDMI technology, and works just the same way as HDMI cable but just wireless, coz I'm deciding if i should get one.
Hmm. Looks a lil somethin like what apple came out wit. Airrrrrr. U know what it is

I just bought google Chromecast. I did download on desktop. to connect TV. Do I have to download laptop and Iphone at same time with others?
So...I'm not the only one whose TH-cam app does that glitch on iOS 7...
This video was what I was waiting for! Awesome Chromecast review.

Hey Mike, when are you going to un-box the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom?
Awesome device. I think Google beat out everyone by releasing this.
so you can't mirror your phone screen on your TV? why? that shouldn't be a problem. maybe google forgot to implement that. if you could mirror your phone on the tv you wouldn't need apps that support chromecast. you could play games and what not.
I don't have a console, and I certainly don't need this thing either. I watch shows on my computer. I don't anything else other than an internet connection.
Google chromecast is will be a better gadget as it offers apple tv features at a much less rate moreover there are less launches in this gadget category.
can i get the www.browser with hand and send photos to sharp tv email asap
I am using my phone to do the setup, get as far as seeing the code, but then there is a window on top of it saying"Could not communicate with your Chromecast" What am I doing wrong? Help an old lady please.

Looks nifty for the more technically inclined, but I can't ever imagine my mother working this out, something she's managed to do with the Apple TV.
Hey Mike, I noticed that you have the updated jelly bean version on your HTC One(4.2 or 4.3). Not exactly sure how that was done. Maybe a little heads up?
