The 2 device have a completely different strategy: Miracast is just a standard version of Apple AirPlay (replicates mobile device screen on the TV) With Chromecast, you push content URLs from your device to the TV and multiple users can use it simultaneously.
*Chromecast vs Belkin Miracast* Read the full post: goo.gl/EZYhOh Here's our comparison between the Google Chromecast and the Belkin Miracast. With video resolutions getting higher, more and more people are looking for ways to watch their mobile content on the larger displays of televisions. Today, we'll be talking about two devices that provide this functionality.
You failed to mention that you MUST have a wifi network (connection to the internet) to use Chromecast. You need no connection to the internet to use any Miracast device. This is HUGE to people that only have cell data at their disposal.
I love my chromecast. Keep in mind if you're on a laptop or desktop computer, ANYTHING on your Chrome browser will cast. Just click "Cast this tab." So you can watch a movie on your TV while doing homework on the same host computer while chromecast works it's magic in the background.
As I recall while setting up both at my house, the Chromecast required a WiFi network in order to work. The Miracast does not. The Miracast signal goes directly from the device to the Miracast dongle. So, if you are just setting up an apartment and don't have cable or WiFi, the Miracast would be the only one that would work for you.
I got a chromecast, and I use it with a nexus 7. I can cast whatever I want. If the app is not supported, just mirroring the screen using the chromecast app does the trick, though it needs the last kitkat to work. It's a great product.
I bought a Chromecast recently. It cost me £18 instead of £30 because it was on offer at multiple retailers. The only problem I have with it so far, is that when using BBC iPlayer from the Plex server, the video keeps stopping and starting every 10-15 seconds. From my phone, this works fine without any stopping and starting issues. Playback from the Plex server for local media files from my laptop play flawlessly without any stuttering. Also, casting my screen from my Galaxy S3 i9300 causes my phone to lag a lot and also even more on the TV. Casting my desktop or web browser is ok but there is a delay of a few seconds between the two. I personally don't use it since it's still in the testing/experimental stage. Screen casting is only meant for Nexus devices and other top of the line phones/tablets and will also probably be included in the Google Silver/Android Silver (whichever they are calling it) when released. The Nexus line has come to an end.
I bought a chromecast because I found it for only $25 (through amazon prime) and it let's you stream video and audio to a TV VERY easily, especially from my Android phone. It "just works". It also has a pretty homescreen/ screensaver (which I managed to make into a wallpaper slideshow for my computer). Although I haven't actually tried it, I am pretty sure you can "cast" local content with the plex app. The Belkin is just a miracast dongle on the cheaper side. I might actually consider getting the Belkin miracast dongle so I can have another display for my Dell venue 8 pro with full Windows.
Lol ya'll mad about the "it's so easy to use my gf can use it" it's not a knock on women, it's just that men are more nerdy, techie what ever you wanna call it and women are much more into fashion rather than technology, i actually agree with his comment, my gf knows about tech but she's not as techie as me so being that the device is so easy to use practically any one could use it then yeah i agree, probably my 54 yr old mom could use it too.:)
boypula Maybe It just means he has a very non-techy girlfriend. This isnt a generalization on women or men. This is a statement on how non techy this person that happens to be his girlfriend is.
Not trying to troll ,but that is incredibly stupid ,i get your point about the price but to choose something just because of a more popular brand name is not only ignorant but sometimes you'll ultimately pay more when you realize it doesn't do what you want and you end up having to buy something else to replace it , sometimes playing it cheap is the more expensive option
I'll admit , i think your a total dumb ass.. why would you do that... if you know in the long run you'd be better off with something else why pick the lesser product just because of the name of the brand, i don't mean just Google, i mean anything, for example apple Vs android, i prefer android simply because i like the variety of products and in my opinion it is an overall better system, and when i tell iPhone lovers this they immediately, tell me how wrong i am because its not apple? when i ask them why they prefer apple, 99% of them say just because its apple most of them know nothing about either operating system, they admit they they choose apple only because its popular, And i just don't understand this ,I'm not trying to bash on apple there's nothing wrong with liking apple but to choose something purely because of the manufacturer is just ignorant and childish.
Great video thanks for comparing the 2 devices. Can you (or have you) done a review of the Sony Smartwatch 2? I noticed your device was connected to it, I'm on the fence whether to buy it or not. Thanks!
Grt video mate, one question though, if it mirrors ur mobile then what happens when u mirror a 1080 video from 720p or less mobile to an fullhd 1080p tv
Thanks a lot for this video. This helped me decide which one should I buy. I'm thinking of using miracast for powerpoint presentation using my android phone (v 4.4.4) wireless via lcd projector. Does this (miracast) need internet connection to function? thanks
can you use the Belkin Miracast to mirror your Laptop to your Android Phone or tablet? If not...what products would you recommend that can do that...? thank you! :)
Hi, EXCELLENT VIDEO!!! Is the Belkin Screen Cast compatible with LG STYLO 3 Smartphone? It sucks MHL isn't supported on 2017 Smartphones. My Rocketfish MHL worked on Samsung Note 3, but not on LG STYLO 3. I HOPE THE BELKIN SCREEN CAST WORKS!! Thank you 😀
Hi, great video. I do not understand "host device requires screen on". Does that mean the TV must be on all the time? That would be pure logic though. Other question: what would happen if someone used the Belkin Minicast on an AV-Reviever?
it means your laptop or phone screen would have to stay on the whole time, no screen saver or you can't turn off your phone screen to save battery w/o it affecting the tv
Miracast is streaming from your device like airplay on apple tv screen mirroring, Chromecast takes the metadata and fetches content requested by the host device, the host then becomes a controller, There are more things available now for chomecast, you can stream local media from device and with a chrome browser extension you can even cast your desktop, now seeing third party apps that let you do more stuff, Its early days but still at least not as bad as launch, As for miracast you would best invest in a long hdmi setup, Atleast gaming would be lag free, even apple tv and iPad airplay gaming is horrendous and thats a premium setup, what made this better was a n600 dual band router which increased transmission speeds over a standard router.
I couldn't help it, but i had to Chromecast this video, to see what this comparison is all about. After viewing, i'll stick with the Chromecast, especially that more functionality is being implemented over time. 3 Chromecasts for almost the price of one Miracast, no brainer.
The Chromecast will probably support mobile mirroring in the future because when I looked on the website, it said that casting from your mobile is not *yet* supported.
Hey KEVIN, Is there a way to mirror my nexus 7 2013 to an Apple TV 3? I mean any app that let's me watch a video I have on Nexus and mirror it on Apple TV ? Also does ROKU has MIRACAST built in?
i noticed with the miracast the micro-usb port is located on the side. IMO this is better than where it located on the chromecast on the end. I own a chromecast and having it plugged in to the tv and the wire plugged into it is very difficult to connect. so miracast probably took placement of that port into consideration when designing it.
The Tech Ninja I was just looking through some older videos and was wondering if its worth doing an update on this video post. The Chromecast has evolved since this post with open SDKs and Screencasting and still holds its low price.
So dose the Belkin work with out wifi....I know you have to have Wi-Fi for the Chromecast...if you can use it without Wi-Fi it would be worth the money to cast using your 4g
I have the Alcatel Idol 3S which has Miracast aka WiFi display so basically what it does is it takes the image from your phone and displays it to your Blue Ray Player or smart TV. Google Chromecast requires home internet which I do not have.
You forget one very important fact. The miracast dongle can only be used with a very limited number of ANDROID devices, whereas the Chromecast can be controlled by pratically ALL Android AND iOS devices. One huge thing you missed there.
I would like to mirror my ipad screen. The chromecast did not do the job except phones or tablets running android 4.4.2 and upper. I just want to confirm that Belkin Miracast will perform the job right?
there is local streaming on Chromecast the app is called avia media it's just a 3 dollar in app purchase and you can stream locally from your android phone.
Hey Keven, I want to use the Belkin device as my chromecast is so restrictive and will not display many of the apps I am running on my HP laptop. Currently I have my laptop pluged into my TV/Monitor via an HDMI cable. If I buy the Belkin and close the lid on my laptop will it stop displaying? I do this with my HDMI pluged in and the display on the Monitor does not go out and I can continue to see my desktop and open apps etc. I just want to know before I buy the Belkin device that it will work similar to the way my HDMI cable is working now. I dont want to have to keep my laptop screen open and lit up while watching a movie. Thanks.
I think who ever does that comparison has no clue about the goals of each approach. Miracast is mirroring and chromecast is remote media. Miracast works like crap if you're a few meters from the receiver or your device has a poor Wi-Fi module... And so on. Miracast is dead to me.
Hi great review. I have the Chromecast and I can't figure out how to cast the web browser from my phone (Droid Maxx) to my TV.(Vizio 42 inch). Is there a way?. Thanks Gio.
By definition if you need an official app like AVIA to play your personal videos, music, etc. then Chromecast does not support local streaming as this video correctly indicates. Please stop comments suggesting otherwise because it is misleading.
Does the Miracast stream live shows from TH-cam? I know on my smart tv Samsung app it blocks live shows from TH-cam. A shame as that was part of the reason I got a smart tv
Could you please answer a question for me I need to know can the Belkin Miracst be connected to my windows 10 that doesn't have Miracast installed though I have USB ports and I want to connect to my smart TV which will have HDMI ports. Will this device, give me a mirror of my computer with picture and sound it would be a great help to know what is needed to accomplish my quest
You left out the one major difference between them! Chromecast needs internet connection to work! Miracast devices don't, because they are connected directly with each other. Additionally, Miracast supports screen extensions which gives your devices additional screen or when used with Windows 8.1 for example, you can choose "Second screen only" and host's display would be turned off.
I have tried pretty much all the miracast devices available and all of them were lagy. They crash unexpectedly. Htc one with samsung Tvs with miracast built in. Miracast samsung dongle with the s3. Lg G2 and UHD TVs with miracast built in. No one of them were as soomth as apple tv and any apple Device. Is this an android problem or what? Thanx in advance Kevin Nether
I bought a Chromecast after already owning a WDLive TV Streaming just to compare and I'm not really liking it. It relies way too much on a smart phone. I was using it with an iPod Touch 4th gen and it was very slow. I guess you get what you pay for and I shouldn't have expected too much for only $35.
Biggest difference for me...I travel a lot. Chromecast will NOT work without a Wi-Fi connection, and if your in a hotel, or anyplace that that has a login splash screen, there is no way to connect Chromecast. However, a Miracast display adapter (I have a Microsoft model) makes a peer to peer connection directly between your phone and the device (no Wi-Fi required ) and will display anything on your screen (the only exception I've found is NFL Mobile - prevents screen casting). I'm grandfathered on Verizon with unlimited data, so I can enjoy content on my phone as well as streaming from apps like HBOGO, SHOGO, MAXGO, STARZ, ENCORE, and most of my subscribed cable channels from my AT&T U-verse app. If the source is HD, then it will display in HD on my TV.
I'm in the same boat as you. I'm also grandfathered on Verizon unlimited data. And I don't like relying on WiFi. So how's the lag on the Belkin? If any at all
Mine is the Microsoft adapter (not Belkin) purchased from Best Buy. The salesman was uninformed about its screen casting capabilities. He kept insisting that it needed a wifi connection. It does not. It works well, most of the time, but will occasionally drop the connection (I'm using the Miracast app for Android) between the phone and the tv. I just reconnect using the app and it usually works fine.
A person at B Buy told me the Chromecast has the Chrome web browser on it. I don't like how many (most) videos I have in my youtube playlists are blocked from "mobile devices", such as AppleTV, Roku, Smart TVs, smart phones, etc, when all I want to do is watch them on my TV/stereo system. The salesperson told me I could use the Chrome browser in the Chromecast to access youtube and then all the videos in my playlist would show up to watch on my TV. Thoughts please?
Ali Eslamzadeh I didn't mention in my original comment, but will the Chrome browser used through the Chromecast allow me to log into my google account to access my youtube playlists?
+Voltz Escobar No, you need to have WiFi connected for the two to communicate: www.banggood.com/MiraScreen-2_4GHz-WiFi-Display-Dongle-Linux-OS-AM8252-CPU-128MB-RAMROM-Miracast-DLNA-Airplay-p-1011082.html?p=JQ26191551677201504Z
but that lets you know the chromecast does it's own thing, the phone is just a remote controller. Miracast devices are practically only signal converters, and are unnecessary for tvs with miracast support
Does anyone know a chromecast alternative/fix to stream to tv without the dongle having to connect to wifi? My dorm's wifi has a form login system so my chromecast couldn't login. It's pretty much garbage right now
Is there any devices that actually casts (like the Chromecast), not screen mirroring. Any other devices similar to Chromecast where you can just click cast, and it transfers to the TV. Not screen mirroring !
i bought a ipush wifi display reciever 6 months ago. put it back in the box.i can" sync. it up to the tv ive tried. but ijust don: know what to do, very few instructions came with the unit. and i can" understand what they want you to do?. i could really use some help, if you do thanks if not ok, [ your good ]

So does the Belkin Miracast work better then Chromecast?
Does the Wifi signal drop as often? Plus the lagging / buffering?
I loooove miracast technology! I have both and they complement each other!
How easy is the Belkin Miracast setup? Compared to the Chromecast?
AIRTAME rules :-)
You failed to mention that you MUST have a wifi network (connection to the internet) to use Chromecast. You need no connection to the internet to use any Miracast device. This is HUGE to people that only have cell data at their disposal.
this exactly!!!!!
The Miracast mirrors my phone onto my screen in the car without WiFi so it's totally better than chromecast for car stereo.
Hey I got one in my car do you have trouble mirroring Netflix
Does it work with iPhone 8plus?

Apocanaut Nailed it.
Apocanaut did i say something wrong or are you just that close minded and stupid, sarcasm doesn't help also it's for insecure people.
***** yup exactly.
boypula Maybe It just means he has a very non-techy girlfriend. This isnt a generalization on women or men. This is a statement on how non techy this person that happens to be his girlfriend is.
You can cast your mobile screen on Chromecast now.
I would go with Chromecast, just because it's made by Google + it costs half as much as the Belkin one does.
MrYungGunn so true
I'll admit it too, I use Google products just because of Google :-/ Google runs my life
I'll admit , i think your a total dumb ass.. why would you do that... if you know in the long run you'd be better off with something else why pick the lesser product just because of the name of the brand, i don't mean just Google, i mean anything, for example apple Vs android, i prefer android simply because i like the variety of products and in my opinion it is an overall better system, and when i tell iPhone lovers this they immediately, tell me how wrong i am because its not apple? when i ask them why they prefer apple, 99% of them say just because its apple most of them know nothing about either operating system, they admit they they choose apple only because its popular, And i just don't understand this ,I'm not trying to bash on apple there's nothing wrong with liking apple but to choose something purely because of the manufacturer is just ignorant and childish.
MrYungGunn SPEAK THE TRUTH!! lol
What would your ISP have to do with miracast? That's all dependent on your local Wi-Fi setup.
You did not mention if Belkin MiraCast can be use in others OS like IOS or Windows phone.
Thanks, Android Authority - I was always wondering how the two adapters compared!
Great video thanks for comparing the 2 devices. Can you (or have you) done a review of the Sony Smartwatch 2? I noticed your device was connected to it, I'm on the fence whether to buy it or not. Thanks!
Great info. Always appreciate the information Android Authority posts!
That Belkin is exactly what I was looking for. I hope it's lower in price now. Thanks. Great video.
Love the review, I think ill be getting a chromecast today!
Justin M Except Roku doesn't support TH-cam.
mm
Justin M I stopped using my Roku because there was no official TH-cam support. It could be hacked on but it never worked well.
Ian Niblett ummmm, TH-cam works just fine on my Roku 3. Always did, since the day I took it out of the box.
Shawn W Dunn Okay, they must have added it back. I had a Roku 2 and the most useful thing it has ever done is power my Chromecast via its USB port.
Probably should have mentioned that Chromecast can work with your laptop if you have chrome installed. Does miracast do something like that?
As at now I will go for Google Chromecast but hopefully it will improve in the next version...
Grt video mate, one question though, if it mirrors ur mobile then what happens when u mirror a 1080 video from 720p or less mobile to an fullhd 1080p tv

It does not. Its a wifi direct connection
Sometimes its really hard to figure out which One you are talking about - Chromecast or Belkin's Miracast.
Thanks for nice review! It was exactly i need to know!
I love the style of your review. Very simple yet pointed and elegant.
Keep up good work!
can you use the Belkin Miracast to mirror your Laptop to your Android Phone or tablet?
Other question: what would happen if someone used the Belkin Minicast on an AV-Reviever?
it means your laptop or phone screen would have to stay on the whole time, no screen saver or you can't turn off your phone screen to save battery w/o it affecting the tv

the Miracast on Idol does not require separate piece of hardware
Can the chromecast mirror your phone screen for things such as playing games?
Waiting for Nexus TV. I hope Chromecast's features will be added to it

heyy pretty informative video abt chromecast& belkin miracast..thanks..does any1know if belkin miracast works to mirror macbook pro on to a tv?
So for chromecast u need a wifi connection?(router with internet)
And miracast makes its own wifi u connect to?
can the Belkin Miracast be used without wifi? I want to use this in a vehicle.
So how about desktop PC to TV? what are the better options?
is there anyway to use either without using my phone's mobile hotspot? I don't have Internet other than my phone.
What if you lowered the brightness of the device, will there be low brightness on the TV when using the belkin?
Which of the casting devices can run Skype? Or when will there be an update for Skype to support casting?
Thank you.

4:08 Comcast connection? This has nothing to do with it. It all goes through the local network.
So... The miracast works just like a slimport for my nexus5?
the belkin does it requires WiFi connection?

im noob so what is the better chromecast or miracast for hd games ? and this is compatible to my moto g bec i need one
Hi what is the Song playing Thanks
how does MOCREO iPush stand up against those two. considering its cheap price and additional DLNA/AirPlay functionality?
any of these devices can EXTEND the PC screen?
Hey you know you can steam local content from your phone or tablet using the app AVIA...
And now the Chromecast does exactly what the Miracast does.
Bantanium care to explain? Because I'm thinking of getting one of them.
Seif El Din Abou Eisha The Chromecast can now mirror Android devices, just like the Miracast but cheaper and better! :)
+Bantanium so it can clone PC screens? how?

The Cast extention for Chrome.
Nope chromecast still relies and active wifi signal to even stream to it and imo makes the difference.
Host screen must be on the whole time on the Belkin. That's a big deal. Also what changed with the Belkin Miracast V2 firmware?
Great article, finally a head to head comparison. Leaning chrome cast., even tho I do think play games
I bought a Chromecast after already owning a WDLive TV Streaming just to compare and I'm not really liking it. It relies way too much on a smart phone. I was using it with an iPod Touch 4th gen and it was very slow.
I guess you get what you pay for and I shouldn't have expected too much for only $35.
where can we find chromecast in Namibia this side of ongwediva and oshakati
I have a question. Can the Belike device be used a Pioneer 5100 nex car radio and do I need to have WiFi connection or will it simply mirror my phone?
Get a ezcast it's better and works for iOS and android
Bill Wellford is there a difference between the Microsoft model and the one I'd buy from the Verizon website? As far as efficiency without wifi?
A person at B Buy told me the Chromecast has the Chrome web browser on it. I don't like how many (most) videos I have in my youtube playlists are blocked from "mobile devices", such as AppleTV, Roku, Smart TVs, smart phones, etc, when all I want to do is watch them on my TV/stereo system. The salesperson told me I could use the Chrome browser in the Chromecast to access youtube and then all the videos in my playlist would show up to watch on my TV. Thoughts please?

I didn't mention in my original comment, but will the Chrome browser used through the Chromecast allow me to log into my google account to access my youtube playlists?
I have both iOS and Android so chrome cast is a no brainer. Go chrome!
can i go from my pc to tv with this device
Which one can handle modern combat 5 with a ps3 controller is the question of the hour. No time for lag on a game like that

Belkin seems like what I was thinking of.
hi, so can i screen my android phone to my tv with out wifi ?
to what SHOWBOX on my phone to TV ?
+Voltz Escobar No, you need to have WiFi connected for the two to communicate:
www.banggood.com/MiraScreen-2_4GHz-WiFi-Display-Dongle-Linux-OS-AM8252-CPU-128MB-RAMROM-Miracast-DLNA-Airplay-p-1011082.html?p=JQ26191551677201504Z
I didn't see a mention of how chrome-cast relies on wifi-internet connection to broadcast and the belkin doesn't. That is HUGE in my book.
but that lets you know the chromecast does it's own thing, the phone is just a remote controller. Miracast devices are practically only signal converters, and are unnecessary for tvs with miracast support
Does miracast cast streaming vdos thru vpn?
Does anyone know a chromecast alternative/fix to stream to tv without the dongle having to connect to wifi?
My dorm's wifi has a form login system so my chromecast couldn't login. It's pretty much garbage right now
Is there any devices that actually casts (like the Chromecast), not screen mirroring. Any other devices similar to Chromecast where you can just click cast, and it transfers to the TV. Not screen mirroring !
i bought a ipush wifi display reciever 6 months ago. put it back in the box.i can" sync. it up to the tv ive tried. but ijust don: know what to do, very few instructions came with the unit. and i can" understand what they want you to do?. i could really use some help, if you do thanks if not ok, [ your good ]
You need to update this video cuz Chromecast can also mirror you android phone or tablet
