  • The professional rikishi’s hairstyle is of course styling it with the topknot. But to maintain its sharp look at all times, a hairdresser needs to apply an extra behind-the-scenes treatment. This clip shows hairdresser’s amazing techniques to keep the rikishi’s hairstyle always in perfect shape.

    Konnichiwa and welcome to another edition of SUMO PRIME TIME. Today, we'll show you a clip which was originally made by the Japanese-language TH-cam team. As you know, having a topknot is one of the symbols of being a professional rikishi. This footage reveals how to keep the rikishi’s hairstyle in perfect shape. Honestly speaking, I was flabbergasted to see what goes on behind-the-scenes to maintain rikishi’s topknot nice and neat at all times and impeccable techniques required by the hairdresser in so doing. I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly shocked to see the true makings of the topknot. Thanks always for watching and see you all again soon. Arigato!!

      This is tradition More than just sports and fashion If you start saying things like that, the tradition will disappear. It's up to them to decide, not you foreigners.
      Most sports are unhealthy if you only think about health MMA or boxing weight loss and extreme diets are not healthy either same for bodybuilders. Compared to them, hair is minor problem

    • @Fardawg
      @Fardawg ปีที่แล้ว

      @@novrinkov0053 Not all "traditions" should be kept, foreigner. In fact, many traditions are unintentionally created ("we've just 'always' done it this way") and the meaning is lost if there even was one. And other traditions have come and gone, even in sumo. There is no reason for them to not look after the condition of the hair and scalp of the Rikishi, and commenting that it is a good idea will not topple any sacred cows, nor hurt anyone physically or emotionally. No "foreign devils" will invade the Association and make them wash hair more regularly, gods forbid! Stop acting like everything they do is some sacred, unchangeable decree from the gods, because they aren't. I like traditions in sumo, but that doesn't mean there isn't room to change and grow.

    Hiro: love the content. I'm going to cut and past this question on each week's video until you kindly respond:
    What can you do to get the Sumo Association to grow with the times in order to grow Sumo? I got hooked on sumo watching Grand Sumo Highlights on NHK world here in the U.S. about 7 years ago. But now I need more. I want to see juryo. I want to see makushita. When these bouts get posted on TH-cam during a basho, they often get taken down for copywrite infringement. I understand that NHK or whoever pays money for the rights and it's their right to hold on to that. So why doesn't either the Association or NHK offer a "pay per view"...where someone could pay somewhere between $10-30 per tournament, get a password, and log in to a website where we can see the entire day's action, and it's up on the site until at least the next basho, or possibly archive it there so fans can go back and compare a rikishi's early-career bouts to today or relive great bouts?
    I just fulfilled a dream by going to Osaka to see matches. It was incredible. But I need MORE! please work with them to figure out a way that fans overseas can watch as much action as possible. Thank you for all you do!

      They're actually called Tokoyama. They all have their own versions of shikona that all start with "toko." From what I understand, there are five ranks: fifth class through first class, and I think it's just based on years of experience. You have to be a certain level of Tokoyama to work on top division rikishi, and I think only the first class can do the Yokozuna's hair

    fascinating, I never knew they had to shave their heads underneath the top knot.
    However, I could never live with a scalp in that condition with this amount of heavy, huge-flaky dandruff ( and I don't think it's very healthy either concerning fungi, excema, etc) Oo Is there any reason why Rikish only wash their hair once a week?
    It really baffles me, as their training is really exhausting and they are sweating like crazy every day, so why would they not wash their hair? And if it was any other country I'd think it would be because it's so much effort to do the top knot anew every day, but concerning Japan, they are the country of things like tea ceremony, everthing that is done typically traditionally Japanese is
    done with lots of effort and love to detail, so why would they not do it every day with washing the hair and doing the knot anew?
    Lastly, I just have to mention that the hairdresser is quite a handsome man =)
