Quick update: Shortly after watching this video, I gave up using shampoo. That was about 16 months ago or so. I have to report that my scalp and hair are better than ever. No dry scalp/dandruff. No "greasy" hair. Everything talked about in this video is true it would seem. Most importantly, it seems I have less grey hair than before (for context, I am in my mid 50s). So I can say without hesitation that shampoo is a farce. Just wash your hair regularly as usual, but just use water. I saved enough that I recently bought a new car. (Just kidding. That's what I do tell people though, just to see the look on their faces. (But I did but a new car 😂)

My wife and I mainly buy locally sourced, handmade, excellent soaps. We are quite hygienic. It didn't work with my wife, but it sure has with me. I use these great soaps for both body & head now. MUCH less itchy scalp, not even noticing any dandruff, flakies. I have been enjoying your content since, checking stuff out, learning, challenging, etc. Great work. 🙂

if you eat natural unprocessed organically grown foods you won’t smell bad. bad bacteria grows due to the consumption of too much sugar from processed foods. your body needs sugar for energy but fruit based sugars, fructose opposed to sucrose is ideal. it’s important to have the right bacteria in your stomach eating foods like organic yogurt & organic sauerkraut (probiotics) green bananas (prebiotics) same thing w your skin, as it has a biome as well that needs to stay balanced.

So I'm a hairdresser - in you are kinda right, but not 100%. Shampoos with Sodium Lauryl sulphates (SLS) will strip out the natural oils, as it is basically a detergent. Yes it causes your scalp to become dry .... because it has stripped your natural oils. Your sebaceous glands become dehydrated and to deal with it - produce more oils. So that creates a cycle which isn't healthy for your scalp or hair. I wash my hair every 7 to 10 days ... I use a shampoo, but without the SLS stuff, and recommend it to my customers because it also will not strip out the colour they have paid me to apply ! Conditioners - well a shampoo will open up the outer layer of your hair, and a conditioner closes it back, but with longer hair, it also helps add oils that may be missing, due to the hairs age - and what we do to it. Not all contain silicones - and they are bad for it. The 3 companies you mentioned - yup they have marketed to people and produced an empire from it ... which is based on things that are not fundamentally always the case for people.
Toothpaste - you don't NEED it, to get your teeth clean, you just need to apply friction - to remove any build up matter - that can be with a toothbrush or those dental sticks etc Toothpaste just makes the experience taste nicer. (I also have 12 years of medical experience, which included some dentistry)
Good video - I enjoyed it. I personally can't get away without using a shampoo due to a form of dandruff (there are many types), but I do encourage all my customers to wash their hair less often ! It hurts my shampoo sales, but over all - makes for better healthier hair, with colours that last longer (which also costs me money lol)

When a senior relative was gifted shampoo from the US, she would use it to wash the table or other things in the house, saying she was not sure what it would end up doing. We yearned to use some of it as shampoo. Perhaps i will now go back to coconut oil and chickpea flour

This idea isn't new. A lot of very, very high end stylists say, "Don't use shampoo, unless your need to wash something (ie, hair product) out of your hair." I wash my hair a few times a year, usually only if it has like chlorine in it or something. If you have long hair, wash the ends, not your scalp, and comb your hair after washing to distribute the oils your scalp makes naturally.
Soap isn't your skin's friend in general. For your groin, or underarms, yes. Anywhere where bacterial growth, signified by odor, is a thing, yes. Otherwise, no. Soap should be used sparingly, and *never* on your face. Fundamentally, skincare is about PH. If your skin is dry or oily it's overcompensating. When in doubt, let it do it's own thing for awhile and then decide what it needs. Moisturizer with SPF, and a decent cleanser are really all most people need. (Not counting specialty products for wrinkles, pore refining, color correcting, whatever.)

Thanks for sharing your story. I have recently stopped washing my hair as much because I noticed some hair loss and itching. It's interesting to say that washing it less or not at all has reduced the itching significantly. I know there were times when I washed my hair everyday that I developed dandruff. So there is definitely some science involved in the experiment. Washing your hair and skin too much is definitely not good. On the issue of hand washing... You strip your skin of natural oils and they become dry and itchy. You are definitely on to something and there is definitely a lot of psychological issues involved in the marketing of many products. Again, thanks for your honesty and sharing your experiences.

It's a bit different for me. I live in an extremely humid place and have an extremely sweaty body (I sweat like hell by doing nothing lol) and I smell like shit within 5 hours. But yeah, I never shampoo my hair, I just run water through my hair, but they stink like hell after like 2-3 weeks, so I just shampoo once a month to get rid of the stink and shizz. I just use a bar of soap and some deodorant (because I smell when I sweat) and call it a day.

In the winter I wash mine probably every 7 days, in the summer it’s probably every 3-4 depending if I’m working out or more active. My hair is pretty thick and I get it thinned out. When I was a teenager I tried doing the natural way of washing of my hair and well, it did not work out. I ended up with actual dandruff and then actually caught a case of lice from another girl that never washed her hair.

Definitely it's a lie. In fact, most personal grooming habits we take for granted now weren't practiced until the 1970's when Madison Ave. started bombarding us with ads for shampoo, soap, perfume, and shaving products and convinced us that we had to shower every single day. A few years later, when our skin was drying out from too much showering, they sold us moisturizers! You have to admit, they didn't miss a trick. Each problem caused by the previous ad campaign was solved by another until we were buying hundreds of products we didn't need and that we'd be better off without.

My Mom has been a Hairdresser for over 4 decades. Commercials have never played a part in my or much of my family’s feelings regarding shampoo. My Mom’s education and work on hundreds of clients, however, is absolutely something to which I take heed; in my own life, by day 4-5, my fine, oily hair is so limp, so uncomfortable, so lacking even the ability to look cute in a ponytail or a bun, and not to mention it’s retained various smells if I’ve been outside, it is a absolutely crucial that I wash my hair.
My hair looks best on day 1 and with a dry shampoo, it’s okay on day 2. I have friends with thick, coarse, wavy or curly hair, and my
fiancé has hair like that- their hair looks great for up to 5 days, with it looking best on the latter days.
I just know that I washed my hair Friday night, and it had been 3 days/72 hours. My hair looked like shit. It felt like shit. I could’nt even sleep comfy because it felt so icky. I love my hair slightly stripped of its natural oils and hot curled after a blow out. It’s the only time and only way my fine, silky, straight hair looks and feels bouncy, shiny, cute, and fluffy. Native Americans actually have different hair from people of predominantly European descent. If I recall their hair is similar to that of East Asians. Most women I've known who are of European ancestry actually don't wash their hair every day, usually once or three times a week since European hair is actually pretty fragile. There's a couple with a TH-cam channel called "Rachel & Jun", the husband is Japanese and his wife is a ginger American. Gingers have very fragile hair and they actually mentioned that he was a bit freaked out that she didn't wash her hair every day. If she did, however, it would become brittle and start to break (she's got very long hair). Japanese people have much stronger hair, probably due to it being more oily or something, I dunno the science. In the same video a bunch of black women said in the comment section that their hair was even more fragile and they had to be very careful about it if it was long.
Different requirements for different folks. My ancestry is just typical American bastard, pretty much everything in there, but my mom always told me that the reason I'd probably never lose my hair was because of my Native American great, great grandmother. I dunno, I'm 51 with a full head of annoyingly thick, but blond, hair.

I wish he addressed it in the video, but for me, and I think for most people that stop shampooing, it's not just about shampoo, it's about all hair products.
Look at the cycle he presents: shampoo, condition, add product, feel greasy, repeat. When you stop shampooing, you stop conditioning, adding product, and feeling greasy - it's about breaking the cycle.

Now , you can get products without those two things but shampoo still leaves my hair feeling off and weird . I use products but not daily and My hair doesn’t get greasy quickly but I found that apple cider vinegar mixed with water rinses /cleanses my scalp . Other alternatives to cleaning your scalp / balancing the ph is shikakai (Acacia concinna) or neem powder to rinse prior to the conditioner process . Not every day but like every fourth day depending on how much you sweat etc daily . It’s a lil messy with powder but all in all these things work way better for me than most of the shampoos I have tried so far and I’ve been a product junkie for a minute . I use a lot of oils in my hair mixed with leave in conditioners so when my hair needs a “reset “ , I proceed with one of the three things mentioned . It’s one thing to rid your hair of product build up and to ensure a clean/balanced ph scalp but it’s another thing to strip your hair of all its natural oils for then to overdose it on conditioner to get “moisture” or the protecting barrier back. It’s just ensures this weird cycle that he describes in the video .

Growing up I shampood my hair everyday because I was taught that that's just what humans in the first world do. My hair would always be overly dry or overly oily as a result. In my later teens I started experimenting with shampoo'ing much less frequently, like every 4-6 days. Within a couple weeks my scalp adjusted oil production and my hair seemed to be in better condition than when I was shampooing every day. Now, I do it even less than that. I just shampoo when it actually feels dirty, which is once or twice a month on average, and the quality of my hair is better now at age 39 than it was in my teens and twenties.

The best I can do is one week , mainly because I want it to smell like shampoo , as I'm very insecure about someone sniffing my hair all of a sudden ( yes , some people around me do it out if nowhere ) . I think as long as we're clean and don't omit any smells , people should have the freedom to groom themselves as they see fit , without judgement/ criticism from their peers. As a black woman with very curly hair, I have a very different experience with hair washing schedules. All of my hairdressers have always advised me never to wash my hair more than once a week due to the visible fact that my hair genuinely does not produce a lot of oil or grease. My hair is always dry, even after I add leave-in oil-based hair products. Despite being accustomed to only washing my hair once a week I have often questioned the role of shampoo and what its purpose really is. This video really helped me understand some of the history and politics of shampoo. While I am definitely very excited to see how my scalp and hair would feel without shampoo, I do think that conditioner is very helpful and useful for my hair type and I probably will keep using it in my hair care routine.

What I use as a secondary oil if I need it, or want to put some shine back in my hair, I make up a mixture of baby oil, olive oil, coconut oil, and some fragrance oil extract. The baby oil is really to help keep everything mixed together and keep it flowing even when it's cool in the house. Just do a squirt (i put the oils in a repurposed hand soap dispenser), rub hands together, and rub through hair.
Gives you a nice sheen, coconut and olive oils are good for your scalp and hair, and the fragrance is like a free body scent that'll last hours if not all day easy. I've used clove oil once and that stayed in my hair for days, even making my pillows smell like cloves.
Granted, this works for me, and may not for you. I don't have that kind of hair (white guy here) but maybe something you could try out. The oils are cheap so you wouldn't loose much, and you can cook with the olive/coconut oils of what you don't use ;)

If you look at the Asian community and the Mediterranean, what they eat plays a role in anti aging. I know the Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese love their soups and many of their soups are made from animal bones which contains collagen and other properties that helps with anti aging.

Older woman here. You are right, all this came from advertising. I have never washed my hair more than once a week and never bought into the every day idea. I had an uncle who never washed (=shampooed) his hair and it was gorgeous his whole life. Whenever someone complains about their having greasy hair, my suggestion is always to stop washing it so much.

people seem to have a problem seeing problems as a reaction to something THEY are doing.. like if it were that simple.. they would tell us.. they wouldn't lie to us.. yeah.. therein the problem methink.. having to make thinky is scary stuff if it means they stray from the safe path of understanding how the world works.. if it's true you can just not wash as much.. that means.. they lied.. and what else are they lying about... nope.. it's easier just to block you. hehe

I once saw a manager of a factory that makes shampoo. They made like 100 different shampoos for different countries for one of the major brands. He said all shampoo is the same. Internally, they refer to a few chemicals to make soap, oils, salts, and everything else is called "marketing ingredients". He also said that no shampoo in existence changes your hair. Any effect you might perceive is simply residual shampoo that lingers in your hair for a while. The repairing, added volume, curls, etc... they're all lies.

@@thebaldpizzaman6319 exactly. I don't recall any shampoo commercials that say the claims they make about their products are clinically proven. Those 'surveys' they quote that say '87% of people that used our product noticed visible results in X number of days' are highly suspect. Marketers are very, very clever at staying just within the bounds of the regulations for the claims they make. Shampoo 'science' is about as real as homeopathy.

I worked in an a big multinational and was responsible for hair care category. It is 100% truth. We would add something like 100g of some “wonder” ingredient per 1 tonne of shampoo to be able to put on the label : shampoo with x which is known for its magic properties etc. and then spend millions of dollars to advertise it. It’s a complete bullshit.

Red hair has fewer follicles and strands of hair, so probably doesn't produce as much oil.

I stopped using shampoo everyday a few years back after this friend of mine with gorgeous hair told me she washed hers once a week. I still use it on occasion if my hair is disgusting (so I’m not a total abolitionist) but my hair definitely looks and feels best on days I don’t shampoo

yeah, but it also depends on where you live, if you live in tropical country like me, it's nearly impossible to get rid of shampoo as your hair is easier to get dirty.
I have some houses near beach and in a highlands, when I stay in my house near beach I need to wash my hair with sampoo at leats once per two days, but If I stay in my house in highlands, I have not to worry about the dirt in my hair even If I just wash it once a week.

I am a guy and I use shampoo only once a month when I go for a cut. Rest days I dont do it unless I walked in some dust storm etc.
Interestingly, I started doing this only after High school after hearing about this shampoo trap from my Eng teacher who never used it since 20 yrs or so! and his hair was as good as mine!
Before this I used to suffer from severe dandruff , hair loss and itching.
But after limiting it to once a month now I am the only person in the family who havent't suffered from dandruff since a decade.
Although one imp thing I have found out is this that no shampoo is suitable only if you workout daily , bcos the sweat helps in oiling your hair.
So if you don't use shampoo/ conditioner nor workout , then your hair will not get oiled well and will become like dry grass!
