BF Falcon 2010 gets a rear end swap.

  • Another big job gets done on my BF Falcon. Very badly worn back tires lead me to swap out the "bent" rear diff assembly. Once again the parts car comes through with the bits I need.

    im not surprised the diff is bent... had the same thing on a 98 fairlane.. no amount of wheel alignments could stop uneven tyre wear and pulling that wouldnt stay fixed.. it would be good for about 500-1000ks then start pulling again..
    turns out it had 1.5mm toe in on the LHR, whilst the RHR had 0 toe.. alignment guys didnt pick up the problem.. wasnt till i swapped the whole live axle assembly that the problem finally went away..

      Hey Kyrie, 1st time I have ever encountered this problem, really had me wondering what the hell they were doing. Anyway ended up having a bent rear brake assembly on the left side. Always seemed to be dragging but swapped out the upper part that mounts the pads and all good. Thanks for watching, cheers, Mark

      Utes limited slip and wagon is standard but yup every thing is the same bolt in

    Lpg wagon. Just cut out on me. Big prob n dangerouse strarts bad. Thought maybe lpg. Guy goes na cant fault it. Hope ignition sorts it. Thanks really good vids'

      Thanks for your comments, try pulling a spark plug out, plug it back into the coil, lay it on the rocker cover and check if you have spark when winding the engine over. This will help you narrow down if it's ignition or lpg. My car is ex-taxi so has a lot of wear, even in the ignition barrel for the key. I have bumped it the wrong way once while driving and the car cut out.

    Yer got a clung in there rear when turn right. Will get to it in time. Cos the ignition been a prob. Have replaced alot + head liner. One day be nice' thanks

    Thanks for the video, it will help folks.
    I really really don't want to get squished under a car, which unfortunately does happen to too many folks, and was wincing at some of the video... but then chuckled at your safety warning when using the press. I'm not disagreeing with what you said, but I'd be far more comfortable with doing the press work than some of the other bits.

    Hi Mark. How did you find the Nolathane bushes over OEM rubber?

      Hey Paul, I would consider it an upgrade over rubber. I don't notice any extra harshness in the ride as some may believe. Understandable due to being much firmer material. The steering seems to be more direct and less body sway. The ride on the highway is nice and smooth.
      Only problem I've had is the bushings that claim to be lube free ie sway bar bushing, the get creaky after a while and need lubing up.

      On a side note. If you tighten the bushes when there is no load on them, they will end up binding and flog out prematurely.

    Thanks for sharing! Weird how yours has a bent diff, only had that in my old sierra when I jumped off dunes lol. I just bought a dedicated LPG 2008 BF Mk3 wagon for $500. Cost me $3500 so far but its now on the road. The diff is making noises, so im hoping its just axle bearings.

    Brilliant as always Mark my BF Wagon has just done 270.000kms & is developing a rear diff noise now? We tow a caravan a fair bit & wondering if that’s contributing. I’ll be checking the rear tyres now for uneven ware as you picked it up this footage. With the LPG being fased out in 4 years I’ll have to let her go or keep driving it until the lpg is no more. It’s been a great car.

    Ford cheaped out with the diffs in the BAs and BFs, having a 2 pinion diff spec instead of a 4. This is a good video explaining the difference: th-cam.com/video/4bZSnIXVIzI/w-d-xo.html
    The diffs commonly let go, and can cost at least $1000 to get fixed... so it looks like the previous owners went to the wreckers instead to save some cash.
    In my BF, the diff didn't fail because of that, but because of a shagged bearing... the seal slowly went on it, and it weaped. It gradually got noisier after about 50,000kms (I wanted to get my money's worth out of it 😉) and got the diff replaced (after driving from Cairns to Brisbane with the car loaded right up to the ceiling 😉). The bearing was in pieces when the diff guy showed me. I got the whole lot replaced with a gear type LSD, which is the most expensive option at about $1800. Going from peg leg to LSD was such an improvement in handling... you have to really try to loose traction going around corners in the wet.

    Very informative video. I like how with the after market bushes, they push in an do not require a press to install them. Mark how have you found the performance of those bushes over the last 4 months? There seem to be people for an against them because of harshness.

      Hey MegaPixie666, thanks for watching and your positive comments. I havn't noticed any harshness in the back end. Considering all the noise that came from the old diff, i'm just enjoying the quiet :-) I guess in theory the ride feel is mostly to do with the shocks. my understanding is the springs can also govern this somewhat, heavy duty springs will make it harsher, but for standard they only dictate the ride height. Yes rubber is softer than nolathane but if I had to choose between worn rubber and new red bushings, its and easy choice.

    Hi Mark , great effort ! thanks for documenting this. I need to do my leaf spring bushes. I was hoping to leave rear axle in place and do one side at a time..... (also plan to try and butcher old rubber bush with reciprocating saw) Any thoughts ? cheers ben

      Hey Ben, thanks for the positive comment, appreciate it. I'm sure you will be able to leave the axle in place and do 1 side at a time. Maybe you could heat up the metal tube bit in the centre of the bushing and sort of let the rubber melt a bit, then smack it out with a hammer 🔨...then chew the rest out with the saw? Hard doing a job without the right tools. Good luck, hope it works out.

      Ow yeh that 🤣🤣 When I ordered those they were telling me I was ordering the wrong part. I ended up sending them a pic to prove it. So, not sure what's going on there but go with what's there. According to every reference my car should have been the oval shape.

      Yeh, new oil and a good dash of oil stabiliser, that's it. A bit of a gamble with so many KMs on the donner car, but I drove it before hand and knew it was quiet...or at least way better than what I had.

    Hi thanks for the video, just wondering if the blocks raised the rear end little bit?? i want lift the rear end but i cant find any info without swapping with rtv

      Hey Manuel, no the back is still standard height because when I tightened the u bolts, everything squashed down snugly as it was before. perhaps you could get, or make some extended rear pivot brackets, that should push the whole back assembly up. Just be aware of the length of the flex brake line and the axle breather pipe that connect from the body to the main housing. Hope that helps, Cheers, Mark

    You failed to do your research when fitting those bushes they need to be lubed with a special grease otherwise over time they will tear apart...and your concerns about your own safety when using the press are a joke...if you had a bad accident whos going to pay your medical bill if your found negligent ...This is why home handymen should not take on these jobs !!!
