What's behind the Egypt-Ethiopia Nile dispute? | Start Here

  • Ethiopia has been building a new hydroelectric dam that’s promising to revive its economy and bring electricity to millions of people in mostly rural areas.
But the Grand Renaissance Dam has its critics. Mainly Egypt, which says its water supply is in danger, and its people depend on that flow for consumption and farming.
In the past, the two countries have made threats about military action and so far, talks to reach some kind of deal over how to share the Nile’s waters have not gone far.
So why exactly can’t the two sides come to an agreement?
Start Here explains one of the most important disputes in Africa right now.

@Marcus Summers I've lived there half of my life and I agree with you, the majority of the population think they're not part of Africa, and look at it as if it's a downgrade or that it's insignificant to be part of. Unfortunately the African continent is cursed by GREEDY, TYRANT, CORRUPT politicians and a population that is too hungry to think or fight for a better future for the generations to come, hence accept whatever crumbs, false promises and lies given to them by their leaders to be re-elected. That is a sad fact, but I do believe a change is going to come one day. Bless up brother! 🙏🏽

Solomon hi Solomon! I’m the narrator. No one is trying to convince anyone. In fact we talk about the fact that the Blue Nile originates in Lake Tana, the fact that Egypt already has its own dam, and the fact that the dam will benefit millions of Ethiopians

@@@sandra.gathmann : Thanks for your clarification. For 115 plus millions of Ethiopians the GRED project is not only a national pride, but also the key factor to increase the accessibility of electricity across the country. More than 65% Ethiopians do not have access to electricity. Millions of people suffer from climate change due to agriculture that depends on rain water. In deed, millions of Ethiopians face food shortages every year and depend on others to feed its citizens. I hope the GERD will play a major in solving some of these chronic issues.

It is one thing to mention that the blue Nile originate in Ethiopia but the whole angle in this piece is really siding with Egypt like many media outlets do most of the time. Egypt is top agricultural producer based on the Nile and they also have oil and natural gas. Likewise water is our big resource and We have the right to use our own resources to develop our country without harming downstream countries. No amount of false information and bullying will stop GERD becoming a reality.

    1. Ethiopia is the major contributor to the Nile River.
    2. Ethiopia is the second populous country in Africa but most of the population has no access to electric energy.
    3. Ethiopia is endowed with different resources one of which is the blue Nile and it has the right to utilize its resources for both domestic and export purposes.
    4. Before the Ethiopian Prime minister remark about protecting Ethiopian right to build a dam, by going to war if needed, the Egyptians were making such kinds of comments. Just so you know Ethiopians regardless of our differences in domestic politics we are very protective of our Sovereignty. We will be on guard for any kind of offenses by Egypt or any other actor.

War will not occur. Egypt has no ability to make a war. If this was 1960 or 1980 or even 2000 when Egypt was strong, I'd agree, now Egypt is so weak, that Ethiopia could turn off the water, Egyptians would riot and the government would collapse before Egypt can declare war. Massive refugee crisis as Egyptians flee. Ethiopia is so far away from Egypt, they cannot strike it from air. It has no water, so no naval strike can work, Sudan ally with Ethiopia because they want the water to be slow down and new government depends on Ethiopia to keep South Sudan from taking them over completely. “We do not tell the Arabs what to do with their oil as such we take no suggestions from them about what to do with our water. Let them drink their oil.” - President Ozil, the former president of Turkey

    • @Marwan-tx5nb

A flawed argument that lacks the basic fundamentals of comparative analysis.
Oil fields do not flow from one country to another 'naturally'; decisions made about oil fields in one country does not normally have a significant impact on a neighbouring country.
If every country decided to build dams on rivers unilaterally there will be no 'rivers'. Being an upstream country does not give you sole ownership; these rivers existed as they are for millions of years and pre-date any drawn territories called countries.
Turkey was opportunistic in its Dam building: Iraq and Syria both are too weak to defend their rights. Turkey destroyed the historic rivers of the Levant.

Persian Lion I am sorry that you feel so defensive. Most of the scenarios you described are unfeasible; the water flaws from south to north, diverting it will cause more problems to Sudan during the flood season than any benefit. Same with your creative suggestion of dumping oil into the Nile; it will probably br most devastating to Sudan, as Egypt will shutoff the high-dam and let all the contamination reside in lake nasser till it is treated.
It is worth noting that such act of aggression is non discriminatory and is considered a form of chemical attack, which Egypt can retaliate with a devastating similar or even more aggressive attack.

@@Marwan-tx5nb All untrue. Many oil fields flowed ontop of the ground and locals used them to patch boats and yes they did cross borders.
Oil fields create pollution that goes in air and crosses borders so we all pay the price.

This project will be a massive boost to east africa. All countries are looking to buy cheap, reliable and affordable power from ethiopia. Kenya has already built a transmission line connecting to the ethiopian grid. Tanzania will connect to Kenya same to Uganda. Rwanda will connect via Uganda or Tanzania.
The power will go all the way to zambia and mozambique.
Through this dam ,once again ethiopia is coming to the rescue of east africans not from colonizers this time but from poverty.

This video started off with "the problem the dam..."
No, the dam is not the problem. The problem is water resources and management.
Unfortunately, Egypt has for decades taken a monopoly over Nile waters from colonial era. They took more than their share, engaged in wasteful projects, and exploded their population in desert area that was never meant to support those masses.
    That's the problem. Fix that.

It might be the end of Egypt as you know it if Ethiopia is attacked. No matter how this plays out, the fact remains that 86% of your fresh water comes from Ethiopian land. Not the country to be messing with. If anything Ethiopia should be the highest ally of Egypt beyond any other country. Aljazeera had played a big role in fueling the Arab spring in 2011. why? cuz they cared about the blossoming of democracy in the Arab world? No!
