I've got a 2020 3500 AT4 and the transmission is leaking... 9,000 miles!! I called my local dealer on 4/19 and they said they can't get it in until May 10th. I took it to another dealership on 4/23 and they said," yea the transmission is leaking but we don't have any loaner vehicles and it will take at least 2-3 days to tear it apart and diagnose where the leak is." They also said that parts availability is scarce and it took them 35 days to get a marker light! Also at 8,000 miles I got a check engine light and had a bad NOx sensor. What great QUALITY and service GM!!
No big complaints, other than an entire transmission replacement and new injectors, and a back window that was fixed with what looks like roof tar, but no complaints.....lol....uh....ok. That's a looooow bar
I was once a GM truck owner in denial. I seemed to always look for excuses for my satisfaction with my truck although it was falling apart early in it's life. The 2004s had super cheap & cheesy interiors, steering clunks & noises...oh and gauge clusters that went out way to often. Eventually I bought a Toyota and now am on my 2nd Ram and have never been back to GM.
@@4wdiesels This has got to be the worst brand transition I've ever read. Toyota's trucks are reliable through and through but a Ram? You shot yourself twice in the foot, and that second shot will cost you more than the first.
I have 78000km on my 2020 at4 3500. I tow trailers anywhere from 2000lbs to 24000lbs frequently. Extremely happy with mine. I love the way it looks and operates. Thinking about getting extended warranty, after watching this, it might be a good idea.
That steering column clunk has been a problem going back to the GMT800 - my 2005 was making a noise and I ended up putting a hose clamp around column under the dash up near the firewall - and it took care of that noise.
My 2002 Silverado Z71 had the same problem, irritating clunking noise. I replaced the intermediate shaft and it was good for about a year, then the noise came back. GM has an ungraded part # 19153614 that is suppose to be a permanent repair for the noise problem. I installed the new part 2 years ago and so far so good. The noise can also be caused by a bearing under the dash at the base of the steering column, the thing is plastic and has a tendency to fail and allow the shaft to wobble.
I have a 2005 with 370,000 saw a TH-cam about a clamp on the steering column and gave it a try noise free for the last 3yrs. Alot easier than replacing the shaft and plastic part. Wish I could remember the guys TH-cam to give him credit.

For people who have never worked at a dealership service department, and be very thankful you didn't. These things happen to any brand. I have replaced engines, transmissions, Entire wire harnesses, and anything you can think of on vehicles with less then 500 miles on them. They produce thousands of vehicles everyday with tens of thousands of parts in them. Shit is bound to f up every now and then. Still sucks when it happens to you but never the less it happenes
That's an interesting take from an industry insider....so - based on your experience, is it better for a guy to buy a brand new rig with the full factory warranty, or one that's 2-3 years old with limited warranty remaining? 🤔
Manufacturers are in a never ending race with competitors to make the best vehicle. So yes, nowadays if all you need is a new trans and a fuel injectors swap you came out pretty good. I payed for the extra warranty myself to cover the trans in my ram when it blows. Trucks are like Sig Sauer handguns, they make a great product after the public trial testing is done.
Its great for him that those issues happened under warranty, but obviously not thinking about the "what if" scenario of those issues on vacation 100s of miles away from home with a large camper. You could be talking a week or two stuck far from home.
I have zero faith in my local GM dealer's ability to diagnose or repair any issues with my late model Impala. They couldn't even be bothered to check fluid levels during my oil changes. When my transmission started shifting a little weird they had it for 5 days trying to figure it out until they were told by GM to check the fluid level and was 3 quarts low. I guess that's a little on me but I was taking it to them religiously for service. Thanks PowerNation! This was at 35k miles and they never even filled my wiper fluid or suggested a cabin air filter or air filter.
Same here. They told me I needed a new radio cause it keep reseting at vehicle start up. Told them I thought it was a power issue. Took it to the place that did oil change and battery. Turns out it was a slightly loose terminal. Fixed for free.
This is a problem that's only going to get worse...I don't send back a poorly cooked steak to be redone, I don't rely on a tech who's been trained to just look at the scanner screen...I don't rely on a doctor who is busy typing while explaining your pain management...There are good mechanics out there, and some may have chosen the security and relative comfort of working at a dealership...But you'll never get to meet them and hear what they have to say about anything. If you have a vehicle you like, hold on to it and learn what you can to maintain it then find a good mechanic for the big stuff. In the end these vehicles are the second largest investments you'll make...And if you look at just the numbers they may even be costing more than your house... just sayin....
Love your content LT, hate that your having issues with the L5P I’m a gm tech done my share of injectors on them as well as sealing rear glass, we use a Kent high tech clear seam sealer. I’m shocked about the trans issue having encountered that one yet but nothing is surprising when working on cars. The bronze wheels look killer on the truck.
It's Murphy's law. My 2017 Ram got a flywheel and pressure plate at 15k without pulling one load and the truck was a total fiasco until I got rid of it a 30k. Stuff just happens. I have the same truck as you now with 60k with no issues so far.
The rear window leak..GM has a bulletin that tells us to attempt to reseal it with seam sealer first. I noticed that never really works but we are required to do it, if it still leaks replace the rear glass. I have a 2021 trailboss and I am keeping an eye on it everytime it rains or I wash it.
I bought my Silverado with 15 miles on it in March 2020. The front knocking sound started right when it reversed out of the dealer ship but never thought nothing of it. Now it has 36000 miles on it and that front knocking sound is louder but only happens when I reverse.
I think I’d want what the warranty covers and for how long in writing... “I think...” means nothing. I’d be scared of that thing long term... way too much wear issues at 36k miles man. Crazy.
It's a totally new powertrain. And a complicated powertrain at that. By now people should realize that buying a truck with a powertrain that's totally new, it's going to have these problems. Even Toyota has had major problems when they redesign powertrains or truck platforms.
GM should have never stopped installing the Allison Trans. I owned 2 GMC 1500 trucks and both had bad intermediate steering shafts. Good luck with your truck.
Technically "Allison " were always GM transmissions. Allison for decades was just a division of GM. The engineers were shared with GMs hydrmatic division..The new 10 speed was good enough for Allison to put their name on it.
The intermediate shaft fix is easy. To keep the crash feature AND eliminate the clunk, simply cut a cedar shingle to 1” width and drive it into the slip joint.
Interesting video as I'm looking at buying either a new GM HD or Ford SD. Ford has just issued a massive recall for all 2020 SD auto trannys, I wonder if its a similar problem to what happened to yours if they share some parts? Also, I had a 2003 GM with what sounds like a similar steering column noise which was just some sort of plastic bushing issue in the column. My biggest issue with the Ford is it's ride quality hasn't changed since the model T.
The truck I drive at work is a rental due to Covid, 2020 Chevy 2500hd crew cab duramax fully loaded. I guess I’ll see how it is at 35,000 miles haha

@John Doe my biggest concern with that engine is that the timing gears and the cover are all on the backside of the engine block where the transmission mates up to the block. @@stevetassie5479 Allison doesn’t actually make the new heavy duty 10 speed behind the L5P Duramax . I am not sure how involved they were, if at all, in the design. It was co-designed by Ford and GM, just like the lighter duty 10 speed in the F150, mustang, Camaro and some GM half ton trucks. I think the detailed literature from GM says the new heavy duty 10 speed is “Allison approved or Allison endorsed” or something like that. I have a 2021 F250 Powerstroke with the Ford version of the trans called the 10R140 and I love it. But Ford has had some problems with their version as well. I had a 2019 Ram 3500 Cummins with the Aisin which was my 5th Cummins truck. I loved Cummins and the Ram, but I had terrible experience with the Aisin. It didn’t break on me but it shifted like a 1980’s school bus. It made the truck very slow because it shifted so slow. It also shifted erratically and would jerk, lurch and seemed to get stuck between 1st and 2nd gear at slow speeds in parking lots. Anyway, all three brands, Ford, GM and Ram, have some issues unfortunately these days.
Nice truck. I have a 2016 1500 All Terrain. I am a bit surprised of the problems you have had with your truck which I would consider MAJOR. Transmission, injectors are VERY EXPENSIVE and so that is a concern but you seem to take it in stride. Anyway, thanks for the info and well done.
Hmn? I wonder if swapping wheel/tire sizes back and forth messes up the trans? I mean, in the old days it didn't matter, but, the new trucks are so high tech. Maybe even a 1/2" of tire profile messes up the computer? Only saying this as I was watching another two channels, where their GMC's had the exact same transmission symptoms, and they both had swapped tire sizes a couple of times. 3% difference seems like nothing but these days we are measuring mpg to 1/10 of a gallon accuracy, so, to the computer 3% is an incredible margin of error.
Very very plausible theory. The wheel act as a flywheel if you think about it. Mass is spinning around and the transmission was meant for a smaller wheel and tire package, therefore the bigger wheel or tire would alter the flywheel effect, potentially causing some compensation tolerances to be out of wack. But I’m not an engineer.
Do you add any kind of fuel additive? And how often do you change your oil. I run EDT on my 2015 Duramax at every fill up and run T6 15w40 and change every 8,000 miles.

why I parted ways with GM products in 2018. Endless MAJOR failures at low mileage in unexceptable. 30 years of loyalty or stupidity had to come to an end before they took me down with them.
Me too. Had a 2017 GMC Canyon with only 22,000 miles on it when the transmission failed. I loved that truck up until then. I never drove it hard or towed anything other than a kayak trailer occasionally. . Very disappointing.
What functionality have you lost using work truck mirrors? Were they plug and play, meaning all connectors were identical and bolt holes match up? I put power mirrors on a 3500 van that came with manual mirrors…all the wiring was present and it was plug and play
Wow! Thanks for this information. I was in the market for a Chevy 3500 SRW and wanted confirmation on the Allison. I will definitely not be buying GM on that alone.
Just a couple of things, your fuel economy probably is more due to the taller tires and not registering the correct mileage, and if you ever need to tow a enclosed trailer you're going to need to have those mirrors to see around it, you shouldn't have any problem with the mirrors that you installed towing a open trailer with a pickup truck on it

When I hit the off button without my foot on the brake the truck lunged forward to the point I thought it was going to hit my van in front of me. I just sold my 2012 1500 Silverado, and bought a 2020 Silverado 1500 LT The 2012 had 248,000 and it’s still going. Dependability and reliability are only as good as the owner taking care of their vehicle.
I’ve never understood the reasoning behind a 10 speed for a 3/4 ton truck. I know it’s all in the name of economy but, that’s too much going on. The shift points are all over the place and will have to search for the correct gear when towing, the 6-speed was a brick house.

Mileage calculation with the larger tires will be inaccurate unless you have a way to recalibrate the speedometer. 2 mpg is about the amount that it would be off if the speedometer was not recalibrated.
the ridge grapplers are only 5/8" taller than the stock tires, and according to the GPS they speedometer is still correct... but the new tires do weigh 20lbs more per corner and have a much wider and more agressive tread pattern.
The 35s actually measure 34.75” and the stock tires are like 34.2 so the difference is negligible. The mileage loss comes from the aggressive tread and much heavier tires
We only have 6500 miles on our 2021GMC Sierra 2500 and we have an oil leak apparently from the transfer case. My concern is how do we know how much oil remains? So far there are no drips on the floor. Any suggestions, comments or tips to ask when we return to the dealer? Thanks

Issues happen with all makes and models, in my opinion its how the manufacturer/dealership wants to handle the issues that come up that matters. I had a 2019 F250 that at 4,000 miles had to have 2 recalls fixed AND steering dampener/tie rod bushings replaced that was causing the death wobble effect. They took care of it no questions, sadly the issue and others continued to pop up every 5 to 8,000 miles until I had had enough of it and had them buy it back at 42k miles. I now own a 2500 Duramax AT4 and compared to the ford its night and day.

Im taking my 2019 1500 denali to get checked tomorrow, 21,xxx transmission slips a little in 2wd coming to a stop or taking off on a turn, transfer makes a whining noise that it wasn’t making and hard shifts in 4wd, and sometimes if im at a stop and i turn fast cuz there’s a car coming and there’s gravel it peels out and i guess the traction system acts up makes my truck turn or lean to the right and I’ve felt and heard like if the rear right wheel is locked. That's a nice truck, I like the AT4s. My personal opinion, I prefer the stock AT4 wheels over the Methods but that's just my taste. I considered a GMC 2500 with the Duramax but I ended up getting a Ram 2500 Cummins Mega Cab Laramie with the Night Edition package and overall I love it. I kinda wish Ram would have added a 8 or 10 speed trans by now but I'm averaging 16mpg in town which is a little better then the GMC 1500 5.3 I traded in and the '20 Suburban my wife drives so I'm happy with it. One thing to bear in mind with the power-train warranty, it will only cover the mechanical engine parts not the electronics, so for example if you crap another injector or an ECU it wont be covered. I ran into that on my '16 GMC 1500. I ended up getting a check engine light, they pulled the codes and said it was one or more injectors was bad, turned out it was 2. The compressive was expired but I still had the power train warranty, unfortunately they told me that it only covered the mechanical engine parts, you would think it would cover everything needed to make it drive but that's not the case. Luckily I bought an extended warranty when I got the truck and that covered it, otherwise it would have been about $700-800 out of my pocket. The power train did cover a leaking coolant line and a couple of other things they found so that was nice.

The 2004s had super cheap & cheesy interiors, steering clunks & noises...oh and gauge clusters that went out way to often. Eventually I bought a Toyota and now am on my 2nd Ram and have never been back to GM.

Love the bronze ridge grapplers. Can’t believe 36000 miles came so quick.
The dealer swapped all the steering parts on my 06. That was a really long time ago and I've never heard it since. Must have been the upgraded parts.
I have a 2005 with 370,000 saw a TH-cam about a clamp on the steering column and gave it a try noise free for the last 3yrs. Alot easier than replacing the shaft and plastic part. Wish I could remember the guys TH-cam to give him credit.
You have to be crazy to pay these prices for this kinda of junk.
Yeah I'll stick with my 02 tahoe (300k on the 5.3 before I swapped in a 6.0. My 2006 silverado has 540K and no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

I would agree this does happen to every brand, but some brands have it happen more often.
Thank god I for an nv4500 transmission in my Ram 2500. Replaced it at 300,000 with a rebuilt one for $1500.
Man. People have really low expectations for new vehicles these days.
Ikr, this truck looks like shit, imo
Manufacturers are in a never ending race with competitors to make the best vehicle. So yes, nowadays if all you need is a new trans and a fuel injectors swap you came out pretty good. I payed for the extra warranty myself to cover the trans in my ram when it blows. Trucks are like Sig Sauer handguns, they make a great product after the public trial testing is done.
Ive noticed the american truck guys have low standards. I have a 21 lt trailboss with a 6.2, coming from a 07 ridgeline and a 17 tundra, chevy is junk

This is a problem that's only going to get worse...I don't send back a poorly cooked steak to be redone, I don't rely on a tech
who's been trained to just look at the scanner screen...I don't rely on a doctor who is busy typing while explaining your pain
management...There are good mechanics out there, and some may have chosen the security and relative comfort of working
at a dealership...But you'll never get to meet them and hear what they have to say about anything. If you have a vehicle you like,
hold on to it and learn what you can to maintain it then find a good mechanic for the big stuff.
Man, I would not be happy if a dealer did a repair like that to the back window on such an expensive truck. Yikes.
I would be livid
I would have looked at that and said, so when are you going to fix it?
They are suppose to take it off and reseal it. His dealer service is lazy.
Yeah I don't see how he accepted that repair
It's Murphy's law. My 2017 Ram got a flywheel and pressure plate at 15k without pulling one load and the truck was a total fiasco until I got rid of it a 30k. Stuff just happens. I have the same truck as you now with 60k with no issues so far.
The rear window leak..GM has a bulletin that tells us to attempt to reseal it with seam sealer first. I noticed that never really works but we are required to do it, if it still leaks replace the rear glass. I have a 2021 trailboss and I am keeping an eye on it everytime it rains or I wash it.
Don't pressure wash the bk glass my 2008 and 2017 both will leak if I get close to the seals with pressure it sucks
I bought my Silverado with 15 miles on it in March 2020. The front knocking sound started right when it reversed out of the dealer ship but never thought nothing of it.

GM should have never stopped installing the Allison Trans. I owned 2 GMC 1500 trucks and both had bad intermediate steering shafts. Good luck with your truck.
And they 99-06 chevys I still say is the best truck ever made...all vehicles need work
Technically "Allison " were always GM transmissions.

Right!! I thought Allison was a good trans but nope.
Warranted is up, let’s customize it!

Cool video. Don’t you have to reprogram the ecm for the larger 35” tires otherwise the transmission won’t shift at the right points and get to hot?
The 35s actually measure 34.75” and the stock tires are like 34.2 so the difference is negligible. The mileage loss comes from the aggressive tread and much heavier tires

the only way to tell fluid level on a transfer case it to remove the upper fill plug and inspect the fluid level, it should be very close to the hole.

It's not just sad, but a disgrace regarding how these trucks are being designed.
Leaky glass is almost always an assembly ‘glass cell’ issue... and if they do not leak once past the water test, it ships!

Gm fanboys: still a great truck!1!1!1!1!1!1!
Well, we have the money for repairs so the styling is worth it to us. Just like Harley guys.
@@x21blaze21x lol, chuck the money down the drain for “styling” nothing more American than that
@@justinchain1668 it’s only money bud.
Them GM fanboys driving that truck that’s made in China and assembled in Mexico
Any other fan boy comment "GM Fan boys" who hurt you ? lol
If you’re gonna tow long distance, how about getting some non aggressive highway tires?
yeah, that would be a better choice. I'm looking at the Nitto 420V, they make some cool sizes in a F load range as well
Im taking my 2019 1500 denali to get checked tomorrow, 21,xxx transmission slips a little in 2wd coming to a stop or taking off on a turn, transfer makes a whining noise that it wasn’t making and hard shifts in 4wd, and sometimes if im at a stop and i turn fast cuz there’s a car coming and there’s gravel it peels out and i guess the traction system acts up makes my truck turn or lean to the right and I’ve felt and heard like if the rear right wheel is locked. I’ve also felt that misfire, I felt it when I took it for a test drive brand new, thought it was normal, and i also hear a ticking sound from inside the cab u can barely hear it in the engine bay idk what that could be i just know the ticking speeds up if i press the gas pedal
5 year 100k powertrain. Glad to see they went back to that.
its come in handy for sure
A very fair evaluation of the truck. I will tell you we filled the cavity where the steering shaft goes through the firewall with marine grease and the sound went away.
So is it just a gamble for HD Diesel truck ? I always used Chevy /GM. Brother in laws love Ford and Dodge. I just don't know.
Any chance you have a part number for both of the small side mirrors?, I would love some for mine
sorry, I don't have a part number, but they were from a 2020 Chevy Silverado 3500 W/T base model
After owning and using all 5 major truck brands, working them, putting 100s of thousands of miles on I've came to the conclusion that GM and Dodge trucks are no longer in my horizon. I'm glad they got you taken care of man.
I belive u unless your a ecoboost fan
@@jw7037
My fleet has been EcoBoost for the last 3 years. WE will try the new 7.3 gasser next year. Aside from spark plugs, and and a couple hpfps no problems
@@johncholmes643 everyone I know brags on how hard thier eco boost pulls...then they put 8k on a truck that says it can pull 13k...and they come home and sell it and buy themselves a v8 of anybrand
Two bad injectors and a bad transmission in 35,000 miles? Sell this thing immediately!
Lb5 have injector probleme because the fuel pump makes metal flake in the fuel. Ive seen i video of a guy that a replaced the injector like 12 different times, sometimes 2 at the time and he was talking about the fuel pump going bad if i remember correctly

I bought a 2019 Sierra 2500 in sept 2020. I walked past all the 20s and 21s. I was weary of the new 10 speed transmission . I am really happy with my truck so far. No issues. I traded my 2013 Cummins in . Not enough time and patience to list the problems with that lol.
How many miles on your sierra?
Love GM, buy I'll pass on their new stuff.
I’ve got a 2021 with 44k miles. No problems yet. To me the transmission is a drag on the whole vehicle, but I still get 22 mpg. I had an Excursion that I lifted and put big tires on. I never liked it again. Destroyed highway feel. As far as the tonneau cover, I’ve had em, but whenever I have it on I want it off and vice versa. My sierra is totally stock.
Think I’ll keep my old dodge 12v Cummins with 301,000 mile on it without any major issue other than the KDP fell out without damaging anything.
Keep us updated on the steer noise fix please sir, my is doing the same thing.
I wonder why GM does not use the GM 10L1000 Transmission in their 4500-6500 Duramax equipped Trucks instead they are equipped the the Allison 6 Speed. I’m thinking that they cannot Take the extra stress.
Why does GM not offer 3.73 or 4.10 Axle ratios as an option on their 2500 and 3500 Duramax when Ford and Dodge offer these. I’ve been extremely satisfied with my 2008 GMC Sierra LMM. I’m think I will wait awhile before upgrading to a new GMC 3500
Imagine your $80,000+ "Heavy Duty" truck breaking before 40k miles...
Happens more than you think. Especially with new to market stuff. Sucks for the consumer but its the way of life.
@@cesare8020 I’m sure it wouldn’t be
“the way of life” if people would stop buying these “Merica” yee yee shit quality control trucks I will be taking my own advice and buying a Toyota Tundra something that works correctly and is reliable and also that doesn’t devalue in the blink of an eye. After owning a Sierra myself It will be my last one.
@@gmcsierra4889 they may have problems, cant deny that. However think about how many are produced vs. How many have a problem. Also, like a redesign of something, there are bugs that have to be worked out. Plus think about this. You have a bad experience. You tell everyone. You have a good experience, you tell a couple of people. The old adage the few ruin it for the many.
@@cesare8020 I get what you’re saying about how many are produced vs how many have a problem but buying Ford, Ram and specially GM now days is like buying the lottery scratch ticket with the lowest winning odds. Regarding what you said about complaints spreading faster then good reviews if that’s the case why do so many people have so many greet things to say about Tundras and why do so little people have anything bad to say? They have the best resale value for a reason cause they’re made well, Its the only truck known to last up to 1,000,000 miles and is the most reliable truck you can buy. They might not get the best gas mileage or have the most towing capacity but if reliability is what someone is looking for a Tundra is King.
Did you remove the derringer before bringing it in?
Injectors are covered under powertrain 100k miles
Well let's hope after the warranty is done so will the issues.
Did you calibrate your Speedometer for a difference in tire size between the two sizes to make your mpg accurate
the tires are within a 1/4" of each other in diameter believe it or not, and when I compare the speedometer to a GPS speedometer, they're the same
Thinking of buying a AT4 myself soon but not a HD .. Thanks for sharing... I’ve wondered where you went after Power Nation. PS.... Where at in Utah? We like taking our Jeep to Moab.... planning on a Sept trip..
I purchased a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 last year. After all the problems I’ve had with the radio, it’s made me consider going to a Ford next go around. This is coming from a guy who owns 4 GM trucks and a GM car.
Ford also have their own issues. I heard the new Tundra also have issues. Quality just sucks on these new truck but the price continues to go up each year.
I don’t think any make really you go with anymore you don’t have issues. Everything is garbage, corners cut and money saved where it deff shouldn’t be on stuff that’s crucial.. My 21 Rst 6.2 has been running like a champ, I’m 8k in... But I can foresee issues though cause these new vehicles aren’t like the 02-03-04 were lol. Unfortunately. The refinement has gone way up because of technology these cars ride smoother and better then my 03 ever did. But at same time they even cheapened shit so much it brings the car down to a shitty level all the same.
