  • The Maverick 440 Catamaran is billed as the perfect 44 ft catamaran to take a couple or small family around the world in comfort.
Their ethos of building custom catamarans where no ask is too big is refreshing in a market where builders are sometimes reluctant to say "yes" to customers.
What will we think of this lightweight and sturdy bluewater cruiser?

That salon daybed might be a good place to keep children. It's a combined play & sleep area where you can keep an eye on them.

I thought for sure the Maverick would have scored higher. One of their downfalls, to me, is the sail drives and that’s where Antares has them beat. Although they do have the Hybrid that utilizes shaft drives. I think the ideal boat would be if Antares quality and Mavericks ingenuity had a 48 ft love child.

Antares is great apart from one massive deal breaker: Forward single head in port hull. Means port aft guests have to walk through forward guest cabin to use head. Just doesn't work under any conditions with more than 4 on board.

i love the maverick. Unlike Nick and Terysa I like the lines of the boat. A used Maverick is near the top of my short list for when I buy in a couple years.
Admitedly, the half bulkhead in kitchen is an issue and compression post in the middle restricts the view but I would put up with that for everything else it offers.
The daybed gives more space for when guests come to visit and it can be used for storage when not being used. I would add a cover over it to hide it when I am using it for storage.
I don't like the helm chair on this boat but that was this owners choice. Other Maverick's I have seen have a much better helm chair.
Other changes I would like to see: flush mounted hatches, more solar panels, electric engine on one side, swim deck instead of dingy davits, bigger side port holes.
Thanks very much for the review and Yes, I will be adding my adding my vote.

May want to check out s/v andando, a maverick 400 that has been plagued with problems and manufacturers defects. The word is these boats flex too much leading to extensive cracking. Anyway, you can watch the owner’s videos on the problems and make up your own mind.

That shower/bathtub and whole head compartment doesn't have that texured paint on the walls and it sounds awful, the echo and reverb is full in your face. The saloon on the other hand sounds great. It's a soft and warm and I think a part of that goes to that paint.
The boat as a whole reminds me of an old house that has seen additions and refits at least once a generation. there are just too many shapes. A shape cut out, a shape added again and again. In the end it looks like an architects nightmare.

For the money, this is really one of the nicest, especially since you can design the features to your own liking. Also, this boat seemed to be much larger than 44 feet. The main stateroom was larger than some of the 50+ foot Cats you've reviewed, and with a bathtub! If Maverick will give you a discount, or customize (wood book shelves in the staterooms, etc.) it for free for you in return for the PR it will receive, I would really think about this boat for you two. I much preferred this to Lagoon or Leopard, again, since you can design the features to what you want.

I was interested in the Maverick 440 last year, and thought of it in the same vein as the Antares 440, which I prefer. In Maverick’s defense, the price is much lower but , to my eye, it is simply too ugly. I like the idea of a bath, but it would be a pain to clean on a small owner operated boat. I very much like the double sink.

Its a tad quirky, a bit of an ugly duckling in a saab kind of way. I would like to see what a forward facing nav station would look like in place of the usless day bed. Its brilliant value and designed to be practical. It appears to have a bigger and better layed out cockpit than the Antares. This is infinitely better than the Outremer 45 as a crusing boat. Im really looking forward to your review of my favourite, the ST Francis 50. (I think the South African builders are kicking butt) Thanks again for the review.

We were contacted by Robert Shiering from Maverick, who wanted to provide some useful feedback on our review:
Flush hatches & flush deck walk
Flush deck walk. The Maverick is designed to have a flush deck walk. All the hatches are raised and to one side. There is then a completely flush deck walk with no obstacles or hatches in the way. You never walk on the hatches on a Maverick as they are out of the way. Look at the side deck of a Maverick for this.
This is a far superior solution to flush mounted hatches. Flush mounted hatches may create the illusion of a flush deck walk but when they are open they will catch you out. Also hatches are slippery when wet so best not to be in the habit of walking on them. Flush hatches also have the disadvantage of extremely small drainage holes that can easily block up, and in this case leak.
Our hatches are popped up from the deck, out of the way and have less chance to leak. We believe this is a superior solution.
    Day Bed in Saloon
The day bed in the Saloon is very handy. What I enjoyed on my personal Maverick is that when the daybed is in use you do not sacrifice the rest of your saloon seating. You can have two people sleeping on the day bed and four people can still sit at the saloon table and have a cup of coffee or even a meal. This is great for occasional guests, keeping watch and other things. For me I have had a lot of pleasure from this day bed.
    Outdoor daybed
The 6 seater cockpit table also folds down to a double outdoor daybed in a shaded areas
    Hammock vs. Bench seating
The Hammock on the aft can be replaced by an additional bench seat. You can see this on the Maverick 440 Skylarks following the below link, although I think the owners of SkyLarks Adrian & Karen may have already given you this feedback.
    th-cam.com/video/Ieyc9jTowxw/w-d-xo.html
    Ventilation of owners cabin
Combined with the owners head is excellent, this has 6 opening port lights and 4 opening hatches.
Ventilation in general is good with more opening port lights and more opening hatches than any catamaran in it’s size
    Other features
There are lots of other features on a Maverick such as
    - glass windows in the Saloon
    - full cockpit enclosure
    - ability to beach the yacht
    - lowest draft for any fixed keel catamaran in it’s class
    - mid ship boarding steps for ease of access at the T-bone
    - etc...

I think that the couple from Ruby Rose are a slight bit to smug and self-indulgent to make a good boat review, if they for instance would have put it as in my opinion instead of all this talking down like real catamaran experts it would have had a much more sincere ring to it, I also saw the review of the Of duty sailing flog and found that much more down to the nitty gritty, they caught many features that was overlooked by this two and they seemed more informed, for instance the scuba gear compartment, the fridges, the optional dishwasher, the backup water-maker and easily accessible electrical board, the huge amount of hanging and packing space, the useful midships boarding, the hard windscreen in the cockpit and I can go on and on, I would appreciate it in future if you just did a bit more homework and a little more crafting on your presentation, Like your sailing flogs but your review was below standard.

I watched another channel do a factory tour of Maverick. They talked about how they cut off the sugar scoops as molded and add on an additional four feet to get to the final length. So in effect, everything else in this boat is scaled like a 40 foot cat, which I believe is older model they built.

One thing that I haven't seen anyone do is a review of a Chris White catamaran or a Schionning Design's Catamaran. I understand its hard to get these boats in a single take like at a boat show etc however I would also love to see an interview with the designers and suspect that if you did reach out these might be more willing to accommodate you in that regard. Would be something that would be unique and stand out among all the other production/boat show reviews. I think it's hard not to have these boats under consideration when your looking for an around the world cruiser its unfortunate that they are less known and less visible. More barriers in place to reviewing one of these two boats in comparison to the others that are displayed at various boat shows.
These builders don't take them to the different show's however to me, in that "zone" of being a live aboard boat the CW A47 or A49 stands out. It is designed by someone who has sailed the things around the world and has extensive feedback from lots of current owners, has a relationship with a yard that is building them constantly so they are a mature design as well so not a one off. A lot of the design features are also copied by the likes of Gunboat with the center cockpit etc and it just makes sense in my opinion. The other thing is with the A47 the sail plan to me seems perfectly suited to a live aboard around the world go anywhere short handed sailing application.
For me personally, learning and growing up on Dingy's and after that lightweight trailer sailors, nothing beats the Schionning type design philosophy. Ultra light, performance and enough comfort to get by. Having had the experience of walking through one back in 2012, It's all you need and then some. Air-conditioning to me is just more added weight where it isn't needed you just have a few more hatches open or go for a swim. However I would find myself leaning towards the CW47 for its semi production nature, mature development in being built repetitively at one yard and also the ability to sail it very very easily short handed with the unique sailplan that it has.
I think we all understand its virtually impossible to get these different builders and or designs for a review however would love to see it if possible, dont know if you can try to reach out and make it happen but it would be awesome to see a W47 design review as to myself that is the ultimate boat for cruising around the world in.

@@kcdietz3444 I grew up and learnt sailing Dingy's I was rather good at that capsize thing, suspect I still would have the ability to get it done :P....... It is a distinct possibility I would attempt something along those lines, and enjoy it right up to the realization that it would be no more sailing cause I cucked it. Thank you you gave me a laugh :P
In all seriousness, you don't push a boat your living on or even cruising on part time on to the limits, its about how comfortable the most inexperienced or most timid sailor on-board is, making sure they are comfortable is the key to ensuring your all having a good time. I dare say even if you have a Gunboat/HH type boat it will be a rare occurrence that your are pushing the boundaries when cruising for prolonged periods of time. When your going fast and on the edge it is pretty scary and stuff tends to go wrong very very fast. That isn't the aim with cruising, none of these are racing platforms, they are cruising platforms first and foremost. I think fast is nice to have, it's more about balance and a boat that leans towards sailing properly. Something that appeals to me is a boat that doesn't ignore the sailing factor in favor of the apartment/McMansion set up. It's about comfort, safety and not breaking stuff cause that costs more cash than the boat itself once you start having to replace stuff constantly from running high loads on everything. I class Gunboats/HH type boats as McMansions still, you can get fairly close to their performance IMO for half the price, that extra 10-15% in performance isn't worth an extra 50% in terms of price. Just like IMO that extra 15-20% in space and extra 30-40% in weight added with all the mod con's isn't worth throwing out so much performance.
Like everything, catamarans are a complex set of compromises, there is no 'perfect' solution and every keyboard jockey me included have a different set of compromises we think is optimum. I see a lot of designs ignoring the sailing factor and prioritizing mod con luxury's and space for stuff you don't 'need' but it's a nice thing to have for 15 minutes a day or once a week. It's nice to have some speed when you have a full days sailing ahead of you, or a weeks, or a months if its a long passage. That speed comes in mighty handy for a long period of time not for 15 minutes. A catamaran to me means to me being able to sail at wind-speed or at apparent wind-speed or close to it. Not many have that, they are sweet fk when you look at just their weight its obvious.
Somewhere in another post or in a vlog RR talks about the repair costs for a GunBoat that one owner forks out every time they scratch it. That alone makes it impractical, my jaw was left hanging open when I was thinking about that, It was like 100k for every time they scratched it. It's unsustainable for the vast majority to have that kind of a price point on scratching your boat.

Well Done. I think you did a very good job of putting into words what you see as the issues, both positive and negative of this boat.
I think you are correct in your view that flexibility in build, and a "can do" vs, "no can do" approach by manufacturers is where this particular industry is going. Customers will demand it. People paying this kind of $ for a boat will come to expect it once the flexibility bridge is crossed by one manufacturer all will need to follow suit. IF the manufacturer takes your suggestions to heart and re engineers the mast situation and addresses very simple QA issues hey will go a long way towards pushing this brand forward.

The interior woodwork seems nice. The cockpit layout is excellent- plenty of seating options. That hammock is something straight off an old Gemini Cat, though. The stainless work is beautiful. One other good point- that utility room bed incorporates a backboard (for emergencies) under the forward bed.
To me the wheel needs to be raised about 4 to 6 inches. That bulkhead? Is it there to define galley/laundry space? WTF?
Viewed from the side, the boat fell out of the ugly tree and hit quite a few branches on the way down. That bath looks useless. Can't put much water into it before it spills out into the rest of the head.

The bulkheads help raise the bridge height underneath the boat to eliminate some of the wave slapping that other Cats are known for. Not the best looking, but with the way the systems are installed (most at eye level) there is less boat yoga, and enough redundancy to make it to a large enough marina to get work done.

I think it would be much more helpful if the benchmarks for this assessment were known. It would reduce the subjective judgements or maybe give a subjective score category. Just a thought, love your work though

17:41 according to the Polar d., the sweet-spot performance for the Maverick is 10kn @ wind speed of 12kn. I do not think, in this category, u can "Trounce that". Hence your performance grading of 5 is at the least skewed. A double sink and a bathtub....on a yacht? Seems an egregious waste of space and freshwater. I have never once been on a boat or RV and thought "I really wish I could lay in a bath". Usually its "how fast can I get out of this shower and on to literally anything else".
I can't really judge build quality through a computer screen but It looked good enough from what you showed. I can judge style though, and this boat is lacking (IMO). The exterior is my least favorite catamaran I have ever seen. Those portholes pod things that stick out the side, multi-level deck, stippled surfaces, huge mid saloon bulkhead, fiberglass molded shelving, inability to reach the wheel from captain's seat. That is going to be a pass from me. Thank you for the lovely review. I love what you guys are doing, and can't wait to see what is after the canal. Congrats on the engagement.

I looked at a 2013 Maverick with friends who were considering buying it. We all agreed that the 440 would be unsafe for any of us to pilot for a very simple reason: none of us could see over the helm, either while seated or standing. I'm 5'9" and I had to step out onto the side deck to be able to see the sea in front of us. The helm seat on the boat I viewed was very low. The helm seat on the boat you reviewed was very high, and perhaps would elevate someone's head higher than if they were standing. It looks like Maverick may have raised the hard Bimini over the cockpit since 2013, allowing an ultra-high helm seat. The downside, as Theresa mentioned, is that now you cannot reach any controls or electronics. I disagree with your assessment that the side rails along the cabin top would contribute to safety. With the split level side decks and numerous non-flush hatches, I wouldn't be able to walk on the inner part of the side deck, and I couldn't reach the hand rails from the outer, lower part of the side deck. Honestly, I'm surprised they sold any of these boats. I agree with your observations on the interior: definitely seems like a lot of wasted space. You didn't mention that the 440 is basically a 40' design with 4 extra feet "bolted on" to the aft of the hulls, so really you are dealing with the interior space of a 40' cat, poorly utilized.

Just a small heads up - while I agree about the textured finish (a "level 5 slick is many many times more difficult to pull off that a texture), there are many extremely high end (over a million $ homes) in the US where the builder texture all the drywall work. I don't know why, but especially in the midwest USA it's a very real thing.
I'm a builder and have even suggested a level 4 or 5 (5 being glass smooth and flawless with a nice reflection, even under an eggshell coating), only to have architects and clients not want it even as a $0 cost upgrade.
Just throwing it out there. Good work, carry on! Love your stuff!

    • @maverickschiering7035
      @maverickschiering7035 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

From owning and living with a Maverick I personally found the daybed in the Saloon a very useful and versatile space.
First of all when you arrive on your yacht all your cockpit cushions are stored there. This means they are out of the way & you can immediately begin using your saloon without having to move your cockpit cushions. It gives a great place to store cockpit cushions in bad weather without using up any of your other living space.
When entertaining guests and having large parties of people on the Maverick I found the daybed a great place to store bags & jackets without them being on the NavStation or on the primary seating or galley area.
If you have occasional extra guests on board you have a full size queen bed and can utilize your saloon table and still have 4 to 6 people sit at the saloon table even if another couple of people are lying in the bed. Why choose to have either a saloon table or a day bed when you can have both at the same time on a Maverick.
When under way and on long passages as a couple you can have your partner sleep on the daybed in the saloon and this means they are close at hand if need be.
For me I find the day bed in the saloon a comfortable place to chill out and put your feet up with your back against the mast post while having a great view of the horizon.
The day bed also serves as a wonderful relaxation area when watching movies as you can face the big screen TV and kick back, while still also having space for other people to sit on the saloon seating and watch the TV.
Overall I believe the daybed in the Saloon is a great success and good use of space. On the Maverick it has the biggest galley in it's class, there is loads of seating in both the saloon and the cockpit already and the daybed in the saloon is an extra bonus. It is interesting to hear what other Maverick owners, or other people that have sailed and lived aboard a Maverick think of the daybed in the saloon and if they would have preferred to have had something different in this space when doing the custom setup - this helps future owners to make more informed decisions about how they would prefer to complete the layout of their Maverick.
