  • We took a guided tour of the Maverick 440 Catamaran at this year's Annapolis Sailboat Show. It has been a boat we have been a fan of in the past shows and I did get a chance to get a guided tour of the factory where it is built when I was in South Africa. To watch that video, follow this link: • Cape Town South Africa...
    This boat ticks a lot of the boxes on our "must have" list and it is at a price that we may just be able to afford.
    I think any boat that you are going to live on while sailing around the world, should really have a Lithium-Ion power system and Maverick is starting to install this system on boats they are producing now. To see a video of the installed lithium system and its benefits, follow this link: • Maverick 440 with (LiF...
    Watch to the end to see what we like about this boat, as we will give you our pros and cons.
    If you found the video informative our helpful, please like and share this video.

    All things considered, I think we have a winner here. I really like that you can beach it if needed...great feature. So much thought in the design, so much simple functionality. And the price, new or used, is in that sweet spot.

    The maple's really nice. I can and do happily live with maple every day of my life. I like birch too, which is very similar. However I think maple is a bit more livable over time. If I ordered a cat like this I think I'd either request bird's eye or figured maple for the main dining table or I'd make it myself. Terrific boat, so well thought out and built.

I love the hull material, keels, beaching ability, hatch under the salon table, built in steps to the boom area, Sails, Extra strong rigging, the anchor storage and location, extra long hatch option for the forward hull, the office layout, the forward sonar and night vision cameras, the dive tank storage, the sugar scoops...this is the boat for me! the dual power systems rock. Thanks Andy. Always nice to hear from an existing or past owner. Glad you like it. How is the deck slap when sailing. I get questions about that because it appears that the boat is fairly low to the water compared to the larger cats we have filmed. I have never been invited to test sail a 440, yet, so I can respond to that concern.

    Just a question, I think it's a little low on the water, maybe it's a bit harder in the sea?

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Jacques. It is a smaller cat than many of the other cats we have filmed. Smaller does show up in the lower headroom inside and probably the lower deck clearance. So you do need to factor that in to your decision. I know owners of this cat (met them at this show) that have sailed their 440 around the world with the World ARC and they had no complaints. So it is a proven blue water Cat. For a cruising couple only, it is a good size. If you are a family with kids or you plan to have a lot of guests travelling with you, then it might seem a bit smaller than you would want. One factor we do think of we like to socialize and it would be nice to be the boat that other boaters in an anchorage would want to socialize on and could envision that this cockpit might be a bit snug to be considered the social hub of an anchorage. I am sure there would be some Lagoon or other larger production Cat in the anchorage that would be more suited to that with the bigger cockpit. If you want a boat just for a couple and don't want to be the social hub then this smaller cockpit is perfect. If you want people to come and hang on your boat instead of going to their boat, then get something larger.

    • @Starmania_FR
      @Starmania_FR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your answer Craig. I like big appetizers and meet people and have lots of storage, and being high on the water reassures me. On the Maverick 440 I have the impression that the water could invade the cockpit, so I prefer a Lagoon 450S which is my favorite catamaran.

However..imo..one of the best things about getting on a dinghy and driving away to go wherever is to look back at your home...I just don't like the looks of this boat, and that would be a huge negative. I had to laugh when you found the bidet to be funny...I did too..mainly because i have the maturity of a 12 yr old ! You will start seeing many more Bidets added to new cruising boats. The multi-million dollar yachts started using them several years ago. European homes by far have had them for decades. Now that the cost of integrating add-on bidets to your existing toilets is less than $100, the sales have sky-rocketed. I, myself, was very dubious but having used one in Europe decided to try it at home. Fantastic! Research it for yourself. Several of my physician friends and their families highly recommend them. Sailing wise you will save money and space for toilet paper. This is NOT a joke nor a commercial. Amazon has dozens. Good Luck.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Centuries, not decades. Bidets are traditional here in France. Highly valued by women for their genitals. And happy wife happy life. But we know it's kind of a taboo for anglo-saxons, and they are giggling anytime they meet a bidet. And by the way, the "bidet-system" this guy show you in that boat is not a bidet. At all. love this boat but i would change 4 things: 1- the engine doors should open in the other direction so you're not so exposed to the sea. 2- hide the lines, they are all too exposed to the sun and i can see people tripping on them, it's almost 2020 and most cats already have that solved. 3- move the aft guest cabin a little more to the center of the boat so that bed can be used for 2 adults, at the moment it's basically a single bed. 4- move all to the winches to the helm. when im drunk i dont like to walk around :)
    with that said it's still one of my fav cats. this size looks very good for a couple but i would like a little bigger version of this boat so you can travel with a crew. hope maverik makes a 44-48 version one day :)

      I agree with most of your points. The only one I am not sure of is if you move the beds in the master closer to the center to make it wider, then you also have a much smaller cabin. So it would be a trade off. The bed was OK sized for 2. It's no King like we have now at home but I guess we could learn to snuggle more. ha ha. As for your next comment about putting a performance rating on it? I am not sure how I could do that unless I test sailed every boat in the exact same wind conditions? As time goes on and we get closer to actually pulling the trigger we will definitely start organizing test sails of our favourite boats to rule in and out which we will actually buy. Obviously when those test sails happen, we will make episodes and bring them to you and probably rank our best cats in terms of comfort, size, value and sailing ability.

    I prefer the bidets that look more like handheld showers, in my experience, they clean bums better and quicker than tissue paper. I just wipe myself off dry with a regular cloth towel afterwards as if I came from a partial shower. In a cat with limited water resources (as well as black water tank space) though, I wonder how that trades-off with the storage and trash space needed for toilet paper.
    What I can't seem to get over Maverick is their horror story with a previous customer's cat. I've read what you wrote about Leopard having theirs, and even Nordhaven also has their own. For things that are so expensive and for something that lives would be at stake, I can't seem to forgive the, ''oh, it was just a unique/rare QA issue'' or, ''we've switched suppliers since'' explanations especially since they haven't really come clean with sincere and public explanations for their previous mistakes on their channels/sites. I also noticed the seals on the engine compartment hatch weren't straight, so there's that to nitpick when you pay a lot of money, lol.
    Also, not to take anything away from what you guys do with these reviews (they are highly appreciated) but the enthusiasm and knowledge of their sales reps matter a lot when it comes to the quality we get as viewers.
    Hopefully we get to see videos of you guys sailing on your monohull when you are off duty again soon! Cheers!

    Wife and I have been interested in this since we discovered your 2018 video about 4 months ago. It was our favorite cat at the boat show under $1M. Wife says the princess seat is by far best of any cat! Biggest hangup for us is resale. Those 2 Mavericks you noted for sale have been on the market forever if we are reading the data right (over 1 year). So if you cannot sell it, that would be a big problem for us. There seems to be a lot of negativity towards this boat on the cruisers forum and people seem to point to one owners bad experience. Don't know if others also had bad experience but it certainly seems to give it a bad rap. So we are very torn. Buy a Lagoon/Leopard designed for charter (we'd buy owner version but still) or this??

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul. I spoke to Robert about this 1 Cat owner that had issues and broadcast it on TH-cam and that is the 1 boat that every naysayer points to as Maverick having issues. He gave me the whole long drawn out story and I am satisfied that the builder is building to quality boats. Long and short on that story. That was a cat produced before the current ownership. That owner demanded some changes that made the boat more likely to show cracks. #1 was he asked for the interior to have a polished smooth surface. Then he took the boat and did some hard ocean crossing and then only reported some issues when he was in the middle of nowhere (I believe in the Pacific?) and the ownership of Maverick did what they could to get the issues fixed by contracting out the problem. Anyway, the owner of that Cat was not cooperating much with that ownership of Maverick but was more than happy to complain on TH-cam. Again, you may want to contact Robert to get the full story from the horses mouth but I was satisfied. Plus, I hear that was under older management. There have been no issues with the boats built under the new ownership group and management. You are certainly going to have some issues as well if you buy a mass production cat like a Lagoon or Leopard because they mass produce their cats and the QA is not top notch. It is all about how the company will treat you when you have complaints or concerns. I'm guessing you will get a much more helpful response from a boutique builder like Maverick that treats each owner as a new member of the family then from a mass production builder where, I assume and have heard, that you are treated much more like a number. That's my 2 cent. Hope that helps.

I would be worried that you would not have much range unless you are constantly running your generator. In which case it really is a diesel powered boat anyway and heaven help you if your generator dies mid way across the Atlantic and you are in the doldrums with no wind. Solar only really works well in perfectly sunny day. You get a couple of days of rain and clouds and your Hybrid system will be dead. Hard to say. If it had an absolutely massive battery bank and tons and tons of solar then I guess it could work but good old reliable Deisel seems safer for long passages across oceans. • @Bowmans-Woods

      Yes in most cases you would lay it on the sand as the tide is going out and then you can do bottom work (like scrubbing the buildup of barnacles) while at low tide, and then when the tide comes back in you can easily leave. But, there are other times where I am sure you are motoring slow over a shallow sandy bottom and you will rub bottom. That will not take off your keels. If you are going slow. If you accidentally hit something hard while going faster, those keels can come off, as they are in a way just "glued" on.

      Well, it wasn't at the show. They have plans to build one but I am guessing they won't build one until they have a buyer who wants one. I think I'd be concerned that it wont have the long ranges needed to cross the duldrums unless you are regularly charging the battery bank with the diesel generator. In that case how different is it to having a Diesel engine? That technology seem interesting but more boats need to be built and prove that it can truly be a blue water ocean crossing boat, without the constant need of the D generator before I would plunk down serious dollars to buy one. @@Bowmans-Woods I used to think the same thing until I bought one--now I won't live without one. They really aren't very expensive .

    Just curious if you’ve ever heard any feedback about someone purchasing a boat you reviewed, primarily because they heard about the builder from watching your videos?

      Hey Jett. I hear that ALL THE TIME. Tamas from Xquisite in particular tells me that almost every new buyer they have signed up says they only got interested in the X5 after seeing our videos. It is nice to know we are helping get the info out when we find well built live aboard Cats.

      Cruising Off Duty if that’s the case, then they better come up with a free cat for you, or at least give you a sweetheart deal on one. You deserve something.

    Why is there a wooden bulkhead in the middle of the kitchen? There must be a better solution.

    Bidets are great, for both women and men. If you somehow get poop on your hand do you just grab a piece of dry paper to wipe it off and call it good? Probably not. Once you use bidets you will feel icky if you have to “rough” it with just toilet paper.

      I am sure there is some value in them. Just not something I yearn for. I have never sat on the can and said ":Damn I wish something would now squirt me in the ass" ha ha. It is probably you need to experience a while before you want it or miss it.

    Update to my ugly duckling comment, Robert Schiering responded back to my email almost instantly with his kind words and explaining in detail the history of the current Maverick design and his sailing experiences and performance on the Maverick. He included having high hopes and possibilities of a new design in the future, no ideas when as there are considerable factors involved in launching a new design. I was really impressed with Robert's response. Thank you Robert.

      Robert is a good guy and seem interested in making the company a success. I am sure he will listen to people's requests for changes. Within reason. A new hull is a lot of expense to create new molds.

      Hi OzGold,
      I'm in the market for a catamaran and this one is on our radar. I've tried to contact Maverick through their website but had no response. Do you have an email for Robert Schiering? Thx in advance..

    Great value here. It's not really the same thing, but the half million jump in price from this to an Xquisite X5 doesn't make sense to me at all.

      It is good value. Having been on the X5, I would have to say it is a much bigger boat than the Maverick and very solidly built with a high level of Quality all the building processes. So, if I were rich and money was no Object. I'd seriously consider the X5. But, money is a concern so the the Maverick ticks a lot of the boxes we would need for a full-time ocean crossing, cruising catamaran.

    Are the cats that are made in South Africa cheaper than boats made in other the parts of the world?

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The SA boats seem to give you good bang for the buck. I think mostly due to the fact that they pay their employees in South African Rand and not in US dollars so with the USD being strong, your money goes a lot farther.

      Depends where you live.For example in Europe thats not the case,SA boats are not much cheaper than EU made ones.
