  • Today we are in Spartanburg, SC. We are exploring the downtown area, specifically Morgan Square. We also have dinner/supper at the famous Beacon Drive-In. We check out the Rail Trail and also the Hot Spot Skate Park.
**I apologize for the camera setting from 0:23 to 3:55. I had it set wrong**

The Daniel Morgan statue was the first joint project between the North and the South after the Civil War. The dog statue is of Chaser, the world’s smartest dog. The I Love You Monument is believed to be the only monument celebrating deaf culture to be located in a town square in the US. The plaque about the Marshall Tucker band is part of the Spartanburg Music Trail, plaques about notable Spartanburg musicians all over the downtown area. You missed the marker about Spartanburg’s first female physician which is part of the National Votes for Women Trail. Also the traffic light control boxes that are decorated with themes of Spartanburg’s 7 colleges. Another one of the city’s trails has just been extended through the area of an old grist mill with a dam and waterfall located 5 minutes from downtown. On the outskirts of the city is Glendale Shoals, a park at the ruins of a textile mill with a dam and waterfall. Spartanburg has some little known amazing history. To cite a little; it is where the words to the song Amazing Grace were set to music and where the first college football game in SC was played. Martin Luther King’s uncle was pastor of a church in Spartanburg and Martin Luther King preached his first sermon in Spartanburg after finishing college. Another nickname for Spartanburg is “Crossroads of the New South” due its location at the intersection of 2 interstate highways and its role in transforming the the economy of upstate SC from being based on cotton mills to being more global and diverse.

Wow! Thank you for the detailed comment! I didn’t know all the rich history that Spartanburg had. I’ll have to check out the music trail and all the other trails that it has. Very interesting information on Amazing Grace and MLK. Thanks for watching!
