I just realized I had been there about Twenty years ago..My Daughter attended the SC School for the Deaf & Blind in Spartanburg..Gee..Thanks for sharing y'all..Oh..At the time, I lived up above Clemson, a little town,Walhalla, but I'm from the SC coast, Garden City Beach..Moved back home Jan. 2000.. Everyone needs to visit at least once if they are anywhere near there!! Thanks Again!!
The Beacon Drive In looks like our kind of place. Such an interesting history. Bet the food is good too. Would love to try this out sometime. Thanks for sharing another great video!
I am from Spartanburg 53years old and I remember when you would park your car 🚗 and they would bring your food to your car it was call car hoping those were the best days and to everyone from Spartanburg hello.
Yes, and I think I read where J.C. started there as a car hop at 14, and worked his way up. We enjoyed our experience. And we're the same age. I turned 53 on June 19th, a few weeks back.
@staticclay A couple of things here... First of all, any comment with a curse word, automatically gets held for review and doesn't appear. That's why your other comment isn't public. You don't curse on this channel. We will not allow you to do it. Understand that? Also, you're not going to troll this channel, curse word or no curse word. Do you understand that? You need to learn how to communicate with people in a respectful manner, whether you agree with them or not. There's no virtue in being a jerk.
Since they sold it years ago it’s not been the same. Not as busy as it used to be. Used to be lunches were packed out the door. JC was the sweetest soul. That 1/2 chicken used to be a half of a chicken not pieces. The way it used to be with the original crowd was the heyday of this place. It was something back in the day.
You're right I grew up here and after being sold the quality and quantity kept dropping. Eat there again last Friday and was disappointed. The tea so good. They promised before they bought it they'd change nothing. Of course they did. The chili diver taste the same and neither does the meat. Onion rings are now like flour dough or something. Fries are now crinkle cut from bags. Shame they disagree leave it like it was. Trying to cut corners or save a dollar has cost them thousands of customers. They changed oil as well. Nothing taste the same. I wish he'd never sold it. If so sikd it to ppl who cared and not investors like they did
I grew up eating there, but when the original owner died, they changed a lot of the original menu and some other things, not like was from the 70s threw the 80s...
The Beacon is approximately 3 miles from 1-26 on John B. White Sr. Blvd. I-26 and I-85 intersect at Spartanburg. Take the John B. White Sr./Reidville Rd. exit off of I-26 and you will go straight to the Beacon. BTW, John B. White,Sr. was the founder of the Beacon. JC Stroble became a legend in Spartanburg and there is an honorary JC Stroble Blvd. near the Beacon.
Yes, we went back out Interstate 26 to 85, but the GPS brought us in a different way since we were coming from Gaffney. It took us pretty much right downtown.
My wife and I will be in Spartanburg next weekend. I'll make sure that I stop after this place. We are actually in the process of moving to the Spartanburg area.
I lived in Greenville and I used to occasionally go out to eat in Spartanburg, but I never heard anything about this place. I went out to eat in Greenville far more often than in Spartanburg though because Greenville had way better places to eat than Spartanburg had to offer.
The car hops never wrote anything down and we would try to confuse them by changing the order never ever got it wrong. 63/64 my picture was in the Beacon. They sponsored Spartanburg High School Basketball. Coach Wally Dean was the coach
Great video. I live in charleston sc. Ive been there 5 years ago. The food and experience was nice. They were very friendly. The food was great. I got the chicked, a burger, and some of that cobler lol. I didnt know the portions were sooo big. I had food for 2 days. Great place.
I only live 30 miles from there it has changed so much, going there in the 70' and 80's it was much better and it was just a total experience then. I still stop in some, cannot pass up the occasional chilly cheese burger
That is an interesting place. Derrick I'm proud of you for eating an onion, lol. The food looked real good and the prices are not bad at all. That is an interesting story about J C Stroble. I bet the Chicken Stew is about like a pot pie without the crust.
About the only way I can put an onion in my mouth, is if it doesn't have the hard texture like it does when it's first cut, or like in spaghetti sauce. It has to be crisp like the onion ring batter, and these were. Basically, you could taste the batter more than the onion. I will not eat them on hamburgers, hot dogs, or pizza.
The beacon uses more Vidalia onions than any other restaurant in the state of south Carolina, their onions rings are killer.if you ever have the chance go. It is amazing how they operate .
I’m from Spartanburg and the Beacon is not as great as a lot of old timers make it out to be, but a lot of people have good memories and Mr. Stroble was an institution himself. I personally do not eat the food, way too much grease and bad stuff.
@@NCMemoryMakers yes very close. My videos take place in spartanburg and surrounding issues. Edna's been having some transmission issues, and gas prices have been keeping us very local lately. Hopefully I'll have the transmission resolved in today's video
It's just not the same without JC yelling "Call It". The John White Sr ready to ring up your order. I do go back every time l come home. Was our hang out spot in high school.
Should have had it before it was sold out to new management the meat isn't the same I live in the burg been eating there for 40 years I've eaten there hundreds of times but not as much in the last ten years
The Beacon of today not the same from 40 yrs ago when Mr White in charge. Food does not taste the same. I work few miles from Beacon. Used to love hash-a-plenty...
My ex boyfriend bragged about this place so finally he took me......I'm afraid I was very underwhelmed! Dirty, noisy atmosphere. No ambience whatever. Food distinctly unremarkable.
I don’t live far from the Beacon, have been going there all of my life, my next door neighbors growing up worked there, and I have never had a problem with personal safety there nor have I ever heard of anyone else having a problem with it. The older housing project next to the Beacon is going to demolished soon as a new apartment complex to replace it is being built several blocks away.
@jerryhubbard4461 You must not be able to spot a Yankee from 40 miles, or even in one video. You also must not be very bright. I was born in North Carolina, and have lived in the same house in North Carolina my entire life. I've never lived anywhere but Western North Carolina. So, maybe you don't know what a Yankee is. Furthermore, who are you to show up on our video and try to tell me how to talk? Especially when you yourself, don't even know how to properly construct a sentence. You think I'm going to be lectured on how to talk, from a guy that can't even write correctly? If you're going to be a jerk, you can go do it somewhere else. We're not putting up with it here. Got it?
@jerryhubbard4461 You don't know what you're talking about. Western North Carolina is about 80% Conservative. We are Conservative. I've never voted for a Democrat in my life. You must not know much about the mountainous region of Western North Carolina. It's far from liberal. We are not from Charlotte. Charlotte is liberal, as are Raleigh and Durham. We're not liberal. And I sure am not a Yankee.
I'm from the area..yes it's a popular restaurant in Spartanburg..but the food is very greasy...and taste aweful..in my opinion.. definitely not for those that value their health..
I agree. I would never advocate eating there often, but that's only our 2nd time ever. Your profile picture looks very familiar. Do you ever comment on the WSOC or WBTV Facebook page? Chicken stew is still pretty good. But the best place for that is in Union SC. Along with the BBQ in weekends
I live in Spartanburg County. The Beacon's Chicken Stew is VERY good!
Love the Beacon! JC "made" the place and just not the same without him. Thanks as always for your videos.
We really enjoyed our visits there. And yes, he certainly made it. It wasn't the same the 2nd time without him there.
That's a great price for two generously portioned meals.
I grew up eating there, but when the original owner died, they changed a lot of the original menu and some other things, not like was from the 70s threw the 80s...
I haven’t eaten there since the 80s. When I used to live there. My favorite was the chili cheese a plenty burger.

Best onion rings around, hand sliced and breaded. NOT FROZEN.
