2020 Toyota Fortuner retained the overall design, finding other bumpers (diode strips of turn signals are built into the front), standard LED headlights (they used to be an option) and a new radiator grill pattern. The more expensive versions have diode taillights and 18-inch wheels with a different design.

The updated Fortuner is presented only with four-cylinder turbodiesels of the GD family. The base 2.4 engine (150 hp, 400 Nm) is the same, but the 2.8 engine has been upgraded: the cooling system has been improved, the balancer shaft has been added, the control program has been changed, and as a result, the output has increased from 177 hp and 450 Nm to 204 hp and 500 Nm. Toyota says Fortuner 2.8 is 17% more economical. In addition, the idling is reduced from 850 to 680 rpm - for stable operation when driving in a tight pull on the road.
Some Fortuner 2020 markets will retain the old diesel engines 3.0 and gasoline engines 2.7 and 4.0. The six-speed “automatic” has not changed, as well as the hard-wired all-wheel drive with downshift. In Asia, the simplest Fortuners are still rear-wheel drive. Among the technical improvements is another power steering with variable performance. Finally, the permitted towed trailer weight has been increased from 2800 to 3100 kg (although 2500 kg is indicated in the Russian certificate).
