      Saw the memorial at the end of the video, so sorry for your loss of Harper!! You make such great videos, these have been some of the most actionable and realistic trainings we’ve tried. So thank you! Thinking of you and your extended fur family 😢

      When we brought home our 12 week old puppy, he cried the first night in the crate, so my husband took him out and let him on the bed. So, now he sleeps on the bed.

    Crate training is important for travel too. We have to fly across the country and he’ll need to feel safe alone in his crate. That’s another reason I’m so grateful for your videos!

    Thank you soooo much for this! I've been watching your videos for the year I prepped for my puppy, and I've taken some of your short courses... It is week 3 with pup and although it's not perfect, I'm happy to say that I'm not doing anything mentioned except the food doctoring... a little bone broth added to the kibble, because she doesn't eat much. But I take the point! Where I am doing (not doing) something that I'll have to address in future... she is under 3 pounds, and in some circumstances, jumps. For now it's one hill I don't have the energy to die on... but I'm aware of it. She'll only be 6 pounds, but I don't want her having a habit of jumping. Thanks again for the great videos! It's comforting to see the list and feel that I'm starting her off well!

    Watching this video made me realize my pups are spoiled brats. They go out in strollers only because our area is not pet friendly at all. They are crate trained but sleep beside me on the bed from time to time. I learned crate training from your videos and it worked wonderfully. They also learned not to panic when I leave, too. But I am guilty of bringing them everywhere.

    I am at my wits end with my 10 week old puppy. I followed all the steps for crate training and he does fine going in and out and even sometimes napping in the crate but he completely freaks out when the door is closed. He has finally started sleeping in it at night but he has be sleepy to go in. When I say freaks, it is far beyond whining, it is screaming. He does the same thing when we close the door on the playpen we got him. He does this even when we are standing right beside the crate or playpen. He also cries when we can’t see us but he can still hear us. We started crate training as soon as we got him.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like he might be panicking, which we definitely want to avoid. He isn't able to learn new things or create positive associations in that state. We can help you if you'd like to enroll in one of our courses! We have a crate training mini course that might help, but if you feel like your situation is more serious, the online course at the PRO level will give you personalized guidance every step of the way.

      Thanks. I bought the mini course. I know you say to not put in bedding yet. My puppy is 1.5 pounds so I am scared he will get cold laying in the crate pan flooring. What do you suggest?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว

      The crate cover helps keep in heat. Remember that dogs are naturally warmer than humans. They do just fine on the crate floor.

    We spoil our dog in the sense that she gets lots of play and loving and activities and sleep and training. But we dont let her decide what to eat. If she doesnt eat her kibble because she wants chicken, it gets picked up and we offer kibble again a few hours later. We give her lots of choices, choices on chewies, toys, which route we walk. We crate trained her but also let her sleep in bed. Pretty much from the begining we let her sleep in bed but doung structured crate time during the day, structured time in there alone. She wouldnt bark to wake us up to potty, but she would paw at us. It worked for us to let her in bed so she could paw at us. Now as a teenager she does sometimes sleep with us, and sometimes chooses her crate or the floor. So many people think we spoiled her based on how much time we spend interacting with her but i think many people dont give their dog enough attention. Every day we do a short grooming session, every day we train, every day we play, we go for walks or go to the parks sometimes. We got her used to wearing clothes (a winter jacket, a lifevest, a harness, socks for hot pavement, etc) yeah its A LOT of time and effort but i think its setting her up for success for the long term. Were teaching good habits, getting her used to being handled and groomed, training and working on impulse control.

    Thanks so much for the tips! When is appropriate to provide puppies with a bed? Is it uncomfortable for them to sleep in the crate? Is a blanket instead of a bed still a no?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว

      We don't recommend any bedding or blankets until they are past potty training, teething and adolescence. Even after those phases, some dogs cannot be trusted with soft fabrics for a lifetime, and others do just fine. You'll have to get to know your own dog's habits to know for sure.

    We just brought home a 16 month old chihuahua last week! She has never stepped foot outside before we got her, and so far she truly hates being outside. We try to make going outside a fun experience for her (toys, treats, letting her sniff everything, being patient) but she is not overly interested in treats, even while inside! When she is outside, she will usually go potty, but the second she does, she will pull on the leash to go right back inside. Do you have any tips? :)

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You might need to work on this with smaller steps. For now, try to do things that she enjoys near the door with the door open (or cracked) so she can get used to the sounds and smells without being outside. If she wants to go right back inside after a potty break, let her. You want to make sure all training is positive. Given her age and history you'll probably have to take this achingly slow, but it's worth it! This video can help you. Pay close attention to the "Threshold" concept which can help you know where to begin your exposure training sessions.

    Okay, I don't put clothes on her indoors or for funsies. But since she's a short-haired pitty/frenchie mix, I believe she gets cold, especially this time of the year. She starts shivering and on a couple cases refused to go out without her hoodie. She does make me struggle with putting it on and it comes on once we are inside. Is this okay?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Some short-haired breeds, like Pitty and Frenchie mixes, can definitely feel the chill more than others, so it makes sense that she’s shivering or hesitant to go out in the cold. Using a hoodie to keep her comfortable is totally fine, especially if it’s helping her feel more secure about heading outside.
      To make things easier for both of you, try creating a more inviting potty spot by shoveling a small patch of grass or placing a board over the ground to keep it clear. This can give her a cozy option for doing her business without having to brave the worst of the elements.
      If she’s wiggly when putting on the hoodie, try practicing it as a fun activity when you’re not heading out. Pair the process with treats, praise, or even a little game to help her see the hoodie as a good thing.

    • @ginasolis3857
      @ginasolis3857 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @HowToTrainADreamDog wow thanks that's a great idea to keep a board over a small patch so she can go potty.
      Thankfully, she sits patiently while putting on both her hoodie and harness. She even gives me her paw to put through the arm holes.

    Really enjoyed your video one quick question when you said don't put them under unnecessary stress I have talked with you before we have 2 yorkie there knocking on the door 5 months now full-blooded sisters we take them out individually they live in a pan approximately about 5 ft across one thing I don't understand there is some days when you take one out to go potty the other one goes a little crazy and then there is some days a little whimper that's it then we bring them back in take the other one out and then the other one may go crazy I actually have two small crates inside their big pain they sleep in their crates most of the time with both doors open the word appreciate your input also this last thing is for everyone again too small Yorkies we have took them in to get their shots instead of getting multiple shots for each puppy we separated them individually approximately three weeks apart neither one of my puppies got sick or laid around or I don't think they went through any discomfort my personal opinion getting the multiple shots one time is very hard on your pups thanks again for your video

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's best if your pups are in their own crates, with the door closed, when they are napping or at night or when you are away from home. With littermates it's important that they have independent alone time without the other one in order to grow and be healthy apart from each other. This video can help you! th-cam.com/video/p_RDIS9yoVo/w-d-xo.html

    How old is "a little older" when it comes to bedding in the crate? Our little guy will be 15 weeks tomorrow and since we didn't know any better he's always had bedding (a small fleece blanket in the travel crate, and an actual bed in the wire one) since we brought him home at 12 weeks.
    He's never had a potty accident in the crate and never chews on the bedding. Are these things that will start with adolescence and/or cutting his adult teeth, or did we just get lucky?
    And if we take it away for upcoming problem periods, how do we know when to put it back in?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's very possible that adolescence or teething could bring on those behaviors. The best thing to do is to inspect the bed carefully and also keep a pet camera so you can check on him when you're not home. If you see the slightest sign of gnawing or chewing, definitely remove it!

    Well I’ve broken 2 of these even before I get my puppy, he’ll have some socks and a pram but I live in a place where there’s constant pesticide spraying and animal baiting not too far from home so until he’s bigger, fully vaccinated and better trained then that’s what I’m comfortable with.

    What about a bandana?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most of the time bandanas are not bothersome to the dog. And they don't mask any kind of body language. If you'd like your pup to be festive and he/she doesn't indicate any discomfort with a bandana, it might be a fine option. Be sure to take it off when he/she goes in the crate or you are not able to supervise.

    Sometimes we add a few little pieces of cheese in our 2 year old goldendoodle’s crate, KONG toys, and in her food bowl with kibbles. She eats all her food, but enjoys searching for the pieces of cheese.

      You can slowly start to decrease it. Remember to use meal time as training time, which is a great way to help the dog eat all the kibble they need for development.

    Oh I spolied my Jack, Jack was born May of 2021 and the winter of 21/22 in NJ was wet and cold and Jack still had his puppy fur so He got a sweater for when going outside. He thought it was a game putting it on him, and later when removing it lol but when it was on him he left it alone. If it was cool outside and I didn't reach for his sweater Jack would stop and stare at it till I grabbed it and put it on him. Other then Halloween I don't force him into clothing and costumes normally, but even for his 2nd weekend he didn't have as thick a coat as I would have liked so sweater or doggy Jacket. I do have a "Jogging Stroller" that I modified for Jack to sit in so he doesn't get stepped on when we go places. He sit's in a nice basket on a folded blanket, and usually is leaning forward like Leo from Titanic when we go out.

    I've used potty pads since my puppy was 7 weeks old, he's now 4 months. He only uses one in his play pen at night, and rarely then. But the pads were used alot when he was younger. I limit his ability to go in all our rooms.
    And feeding, i disagree with you. I oonly give mine half the recommended kibble and add meat, and veggies. I watch the amounts and this is approved by my vet.

    You say there is a way for your unvaccinated puppy to go potty outside safely, but then you NEVER say how to do that? Why? What's the point of saying that, if you're not going to say how? I live an apartment with tens of dozens of other dog owners and there are only two designated places that a dog can go potty. Nopety no to exposing my young unvaccinated pup to all that!

      I literally have taken all my dogs out to potty while beginning vaccines and they’ve all been fine, if you’re concerned use turf on your patio or by the door that may work for you

    • @kestaa
      @kestaa ปีที่แล้ว

      @@here_4_the_commentzWe used a turf potty on the balcony until our pup was vaccinated. I know it's not recommended by HTTADD, but we're in an apartment building with no outdoor potty spots on property. The only place to go is the grass alongside the sidewalk, which would be fine if all the other dog owners in our neighbourhood picked up after their dogs, but we find a new little "landmine" every time we go out so there's really nowhere that we can assume is safe.
      And sure, the risk may be low, but I know someone who lost a puppy to parvo before she'd had all her shots and we decided that the possibility of longer/more difficult potty training was worth the risk.
      Since we've been taking him out, our pup has only had three accidents inside - and one of those was because he couldn't hold it long enough in the morning for me to get everything together, walk down the hallway to the elevator, ride the elevator down to the lobby, and walk out the front door. Since we started using the balcony potty first thing in the morning, the only 2 accidents he's had were when we got distracted and either forgot that he has to pee after a play session or missed his cue that he needed to go out again. (We've just started bell training for that since he's to polite to bark.)
