I also love how the DC's chapters are set up in a way where you can very easily pause and return to them if you don't want to take the entire movie in on one sitting. I think I watched this over 3 days to really let it all sink in and it worked perfectly.
I almost always exclusively prefer the theatrical cuts, but this is one of the few where I just adore the director’s cut. Love seeing more of Mike Flanagan’s ideas.
Just a reminder y'all, every year from January-May James takes a break from weekly Kill Count's because they're a lot of work and he doesn't want to get burnt out. The next one is Spree which will be out Friday the 12th
I just saw the director's cut, and I actually prefer it over the theatrical cut. I agree with you about the motivations of some characters being even deeper. The only scene i would cut was the bathroom scene at the Overlook. I loved the bar scene with his dad. The director's cut of the bar scene was more emotionally deeper to me. I dare say that Doctor Sleep is a masterpiece. I got emotional watching the scenes when the elderly folks passed away. I saw the exact same scenes in 2019 and they hit harder. I noticed the score included rhythm beats like a heart...I loved that detail. Just an amazing movie.
After watching the editing streams, I have so much more appreciation for the work put into these videos than I already did. Thanks James and Dead Meat Crew!
I like the chapter titles. I feel like they show you how far you're in, that you just reached the climax of a segment, and that you should expect a little slowness in the next five minutes. Really helps get you through the three hours of the theatrical cut - I didn't even notice how long it was.
I find it very sad that videos like these don’t get more views/ attention. Just as much work goes into it as a kill count as does the podcast. I really hope it doesn’t detain James from making more unless he has to
Hey James, I really enjoyed the movie, but it STILL bothers me that they completely deleted the plot point of Abra actually being Danny's niece. It was one of the sweetest twists in the novel!
Watching this, it makes me think that either I watched this accidentally when I looked it up after I went to the cinema, or I watched this cut in the cinema some how...
I especially enjoyed the night drive back to the overlook. Danny's gift's they never talk about in the original. Like the death flies? That really fucked me up when I saw them crawling all over that chicks face. Sequels suck most times! But I have to say I enjoyed this as much as the original.
I love the Director's cut for the stylistic changes with the chapter headings and the extra character scenes, some of which I didn't even notice the first time, and all of the extra scenes with the villains were really great. The piano scene I don't think was necessary since like you said the spoon scene serves the same point. The only two things that I think should have stayed cut were the bathroom scene after the Dan's conversation at the bar, since I find it distracting seeing so much of none-Nicholson Jack Torrance, which I feel they did a better job filming around that when it was just the bar scene only showing his side profile until the very end. I also prefer in that scene when Dan describes how his mother couldn't look at him and how he had to use his shine to change that, McGregor's performance in the theatrical cut sold me on how much that hurt him, so when I saw they added the flashback to that moment I didn't think it was necessary to see it, I found it more emotional imagining that he had to do that rather than the film just showing it. Overall though I do still prefer the Director's cut.
