I'm in vet school and to anyone hesitating, let me tell you that it's awesome. What's most awesome aren't the classes, it's the opportunities you get to learn via school clubs and hands-on labs. If you get in, be involved! It will truly make your experience so much more worthwhile.

What vet school are you currently attending? What undergrad school did you attend? I am just a sophomore in high school but have gotten all A's my entire life and have wanted to be a small animal vet/surgeon for as long as I can remember! Seeing people live out my dream, even throughout the hardships of vet school, makes me want to achieve it even more :)

I don't understand the educational system. So... 4 years in high school, 4 years of college and more 4 years of vet school? And college is where do you choose what to major and after that you can go to vet school? It's sooo different from our system. I'm in vet school too. But here, in Romania, we have 4 years of highschool in which we major at something and after that 6 years of vet school.

In the UK we have secondary school (ages 11-16) where we choose our GCSE's, we then progress into sixth form if we wish to take an academic route. I believe this is equivalent to college (age 16-18). We have to choose the right subjects for sixth form in order to get into veterinary medicine (Biology, Chemistry, Maths / Physics) and you have to achieve very high grades. You can't get into vet school without this, unless you're a post grad candidate with a top degree in another related field, such as Biochemistry. You definitely cannot get into vet school based on an English qualification, although we are also required to achieve a certain grade in core subjects, in addition to our science and maths qualifications.

Here in the USofA we graduate high school at about 18 years of age. College is from about 18-22 and most vets graduate around age 25-27 although that is trending older as more people go back to school for second careers.

Yeah it's kinda confusing to me too..In our country you finish primary school (grade 1 to 9) and then you have different high schools for different occupations (like veterinarian high school in this case- 4 years) or regular high school. You then have some experience in it and you can get a job at the clinic. You help veterinarians, do check ups, give shots, treat wounds ect. so basically almost everything a vet would do except surgeries and some other things...to do that you must go to vet school (you can attend it even if you graduate regular high school..funny thing actually in some cases you have better chances of getting in that way) after you pass exams and after that you are officially an veterinarian.

I’m a current first year veterinary student in the states. I’m very much thinking that this might not be the right field for me sadly. It’s a hard pill to swallow that you do so much work and get paid a portion of what a medical doctor would. Obviously, you don’t do this for the pay, but so many vets come out with such high debt, that it becomes a very real and important issue. That aside, I really recommend anyone who is thinking of pursuing this field to work (not just shadow) in a gp clinic for at least a year. Really ask yourself if this is what you see yourself doing. Vets have a lot of paper work on top of calls on top of meds to fill on top of managing staff (if you’re a business owner). I have found that everything that you really have to do as a vet can suck all the drive and purpose out of it when it gets bad enough :( I don’t know what to do honestly. I’m looking into dental school right now but it’s just sad because I thought this was what I was going to want to do. I thought I’d share that with people.

Being in high school I wasn't sure exactly what wanted to do. I've always wanted to work with animals because I have an EXTREME amount of love for them. I had decent grades in high school but I definitely wasn't the smartest in my class. I felt like being a veterinarian would be too difficult for me and I wouldn't be able to succeed. I ended up going for nursing at a local community college and I ended up hating what I was doing. Like, it was AWFUL. I left the program recently because I couldn't bear getting a degree in something I knew I wasn't passionate about. Although nursing school really difficult, that wasn't what I really struggled with. I made decent grades on tests compared to most people. Now I'm thinking, hmmm, maybe I actually AM smart enough to become a vet? My question is, if I didn't like nursing would I likely not enjoy being a vet either? I heard it's similar, but my passion for animals heavily outweighs direct patient care in a hospital. Also, going back to my extreme love for animals, do you think it's possible to be too sensitive for animals as a vet? I have a very soft spot in my heart for animals and I get emotional very easily when animals are injured, sick, or if they die/need to be put down. I'm worried my sensitivity wouldn't work as a vet. I don't know anyone who is a vet to get advice from, so I'm hoping you'll see this and give me some insight!

I know its been a year since you posted this comment/question. What are you up to now? If you hadn't made the jump like someone else commented and still grappling with the idea, I would urge you to shadow a veterinarian or better yet work as a veterinary assistant/technician. I had those same questions at first but realized that my passion for veterinary care greatly outweighed everything else and even after a hard day I look forward going into work. I was happy working as a veterinary technician but wanted to be more involved with the management of patient care which is why I decided being a veterinarian was for me. Good luck on your journey. Its OK to take your time to find what is right for you.

Well I can’t answer your question exactly because I’m 16 and only in Highschool with my heart set on being a vet.. BUT, I feel the same way about animals and I know that nursing just wouldn’t work for me. I would love to help people but working with them just isn’t the same as animals. It really sounds like being a vet might be the right thing for you, and if I were you I’d do it. You have the love for animals that it takes and that will make the job fun for you and even better for the animals. I’m worried about being too sensitive too but I’ve heard a few times that you’ll sort of get used to it. It will really hurt the first few times you euthanize an animal but eventually you won’t start bawling, you’ll just be a bit sad because you know that it was the best thing to do. I hope this helps you in some way shape or form, unless you’ve already decided then I’m sorry I’m too late lol. I wish you luck with whatever you decide to do. You seem like a very caring person and that will get you far in life 💕

I’ve been a vet for over 30 years and I would do it again in a heartbeat. That said, I think you can be too emotionally involved with your patients. Not all animals will have a good outcome and if you take things too much to heart it can be extremely emotionally draining. The flip side is that if you stop caring it’s probably time to get out of the profession. Getting a good balance between your personal and professional life is very important towards maintaining your sanity.

So just know even if its hard, stick to it and keep on going with it, the math and chemistry become much more tailored so you might get a lot more interested in certain aspects because its put in a way that intrigues you/ makes more sense!

      @laurabynum6671 ปีที่แล้ว

I'd say the biggest cons are that school takes up basically your entire life for that 4 years; you have to constantly study, and there are exams every week. The pros are that you learn more than you ever thought possible, you gain friends with your same interests, you gain experiences from labs and conferences, and you gain compassion, technical and surgical skills, and reasoning to diagnose and treat patients and educate clients. It's a lot to handle, you have to be very good at time management and take time to practice surgical and technical skills outside of class. You also have to be good at communicating and get a lot of practice talking with clients during the clinical year. The licensing exam is about $700 and getting vaccinated for rabies is about $900, and tuition is very expensive if you live out of state, but there are scholarships available. The best advice I have is to shadow at local clinics for small, large, and exotic animals to see if you like what you experience and if you see yourself in that role. Let me know if you have anymore questions!

Ever since I could remember, I've always been fascinated with the idea of curing animals. I was never squeamish around blood and I've always had good analytical skills. I've maintained my grades and am currently going to one of the best high schools in Florida. Technically, I can make it to vet school if I put enough effort. However, I have one question that can't be answered in books and, usually, online. I want to have a family someday and I want to continue pursuing my hobbies (flute playing and writing). If I become a veterinarian, how much of my social life/free time will I be giving up?
Don't get me wrong. I love animals and I'm a major geek when it comes to medicine/science, but I'm a family oriented person and I have life goals set outside of my professional life. So again, will I be able to spend time with my family and pursue my dream of being a vet?

@The Pupito Pals that last sentence.. I felt that on a spiritual level. I’m only 16 but I want to go to college/vet school close to my home in Minnesota so I can stay at home or at least visit a lot, and then imma move to Missouri or another warmer-than-Minnesota-state bc I can’t force my husband to live in Missouri lmao. Somewhere in this whole plan I’ll start a family and have 4 kids and I’ll buy my dream truck a Ford Raptor and/or an F-250 and put a lift and some more things on it. Then imma probably work for someone until I have my own clinic or rescue. I really want to have a rescue but idk what kind lol. Horses maybe, or dogs. Or maybe just everything I guess we’ll find out. Anyways imma have at least 10 acres and basically have my own homestead and raise my own food. That’s if everything goes as planned lol. I’m gonna have SO MANY animals, a heck of a lot of goats and a few horses because goats are amazing and horses are my favorite animal. literally 10 dogs or more because I just really have a love for them and if I have the space time and money for them I want to give as many a loving home as possible bc shelters are overflowing. I’ve been told a few times I dream too much but that’s what makes life fun. I dreamt of having a horse literally my whole life and I’ve been told not til I move out but hey guess who worked really hard and got a horse last year lmao I did. Also got my first truck. Don’t let someone tell you you can’t do something. If you dream it you can do it.
If you read all this thank you so much ily 🥺 sorry for rambling haha

I'm 12, but I'm pretty much sure that I'm going to be a vet. Getting good grades is going to be my biggest prob. 😐 I am really scared of just failing; animals is pretty much the only thing I'm good at, and not being able to be a vet would really, really bring down.
There is a vet school a couple hours from where I live now, so I guess I lucked out on that!
My question is, what are the prerequisites you need, to get in? I live on a farm, and I work with our cattle a lot; have set a couple broken legs, and even sown up a calf's stomach with my dad and sis. I have three horses as well, and might specialize in equines.

Sarah K I didn't get good grades when I was 12, but in college I had a 3.8 gpa (and I started college when I was 16). Honestly, I feel that college is easier to get good grades in at least in my experience. Don't push off vet school quite yet. There's still plenty of time to reach your full potential. Oh and ps- colleges don't look at your middle school grades. They kinda look at freshman and sophomore year, but if you want to get into college just make sure you're gpa is good in your last two years of high school. Best of luck to you I hope you end up in the field!

So I’m only 13 but I’m trying to figure out how long I will need to be in college. From what I get in this video, you need 4 years of undergrad and then 4 years of veterinary medicine. But what confuses me is that people in the comments are saying that you only need 2-3 years of undergrad. And then if you want to work with specific things- such as dentistry, or other animals like equine- then it’s another 3 years added onto vet school. Before this video, I thought it was only 4 years of veterinary medicine after high school. But now it seems I will need close to 8-11 years in college! I just adore animals and have wanted to work with them since I was in the 3rd grade. My friends trust me with their animals as know I have a true passion and calling to them. I have been keeping an open eye on UC Davis as it is my dream school, but like all colleges that include a vet program, it’s difficult to get into. Because of this I’m also seeking advice on middle school- high school experience. Do I need to volunteer or go to some sort of camp to get accepted in a veterinary school? I find my future very important as I don’t come from the most glamorous family. I want to get all the possible research and experience to insure that I succeed. Rather that be a better understanding of my curriculum or knowing how long I’ll need to save up money. College is expensive and as I stated before, we are struggling. I’m privileged enough to go to a higher up school right now on a scholarship that colleges seek to give full scholarships to as well and don’t want to screw up my chance because I wasn’t prepared. If anyone has an answer to any of my questions then please respond.❤️❤️

Hi, I have a question (although I guess anyone can answer it). I'm a student studying prenursing but I wouldn't say it's my passion. I'm taking it because nursing is the only field I'm most familiar with through my parents. However, recently I've become interested in a career as a veterinarian instead. Not simply because I love animals (who doesn't?) but because I'm fascinated by them (their behavior, body structures/functions, etc.). *However* I'm not much of a pet owner. I grew up too poor to afford anything like dogs, cats, etc. I have bought the occasional goldfish or RES turtle before but nothing serious like a dog. Since I don't have much experience raising/caring for animals, would it be unrealistic for me to try to become a vet? Of course, it's definitely better to have experience dealing with animals but, regarding academics or internships (and etc.), would it be more difficult for me without the experience? Excluding volunteer work.

I believe you would have to also take a veterinary medicine degree, but depending on where you live/study you may be able to take a graduate course (the same work but in less time)

Hi I’m just about to graduate high school this year (2020) and I’m planning on going to a regular college to do my 4 year basics first and major in biology and then after that , go to a different college that has a vet program. Is going to two separate colleges to much ? or can I do my basics at the same college and be in the vet program during my 4 years or do I have to go to college for 8 years to get my doctors degree to become a veterinarian ?

Brandon University in Manitoba has 2, or 3 years of pre veterinary education program. Would it be for people who want to be a veterinary technician because it is not a 4 program like you said in the video?

At first i wanted to be a general surgeon but after watching Rick and Morty an episode where Mortys mom saves a deers life i thought...wow!(i know, strange motivation) but i felt my heart beat and that never happened when i wanted to be a general surgeon.
I'm sure there are veteran surgeons as well.

What do you do for your undergrad in the four years before vet school? Can you do undergrad at any community college? How do you find a vet school?

What's your opinion on going over seas for vet school? There programs are only 4-5 years, which would save alot of time, but do you know of anyone who has successfully done this?

Growing up it’s always been my dream to get my DVM degree. I am in undergrad right now currently on a pre-vet track about to change my major because I’m afraid I won’t make it that far. I’m scared that I will spend all my time and efforts on graduating and then won’t get accepted into vet school 😭

I want to work with animals so bad. I want to be a wild life rehabilitor but many say they don't get paid, is basically hands on learning. I also had vet as a option but I'm scared that it will be too much and I'm not that good with science and I'm HORRIBLE at math. It just seems complicated. Is there any other jobs that work with animals that is worth going to college for??

SUPA THICC veterinary technician is an option. That’s a trade school. And techs work in wildlife rehab too.

Hi! I want to apply to Vet schoole in Israel as a masters after B. Sc in biology.
I wanted for years to be a doctor (M. D) but I'm not that into the rigorous path to become a doctor in my country.
I feer of my ability to cope with the job.
I've always had the keen to learn science but treatment is something that I really see myself doing at work. I come from scientific background.
I don't have much background in animal care. I have always had one cat at home the current is 17 years old . I volunteered with street dogs for adoption for few Friday mornings. I didn't work with other animal much but I do know I want to work and take care of animals, diagnose the diseases, do surgeries, research and be the person in command.
Do you believe these means and motives are a good encouragement to make me good and happy as a Vet?

Alright now what can I do if I have no money and I’m dumb as hell. Also what the hell is up with the American education system? Like I have to go to school for 4 years and study nothing that pertains to my job just to get into vet school, like why not just have a vet school??

Hi doctor, I'm second year in college and I'm aspiring to be a vet. I was wondering when I should start looking for internship for experiences? Also I heard that some places don't allowed you to intern due to insurance policy? Please share your experience on how you got your required experiences?

Thanks for watching, William! I'd start now. You may have to get a crappy, clean up the poop job to begin with, but even that has its benefit. If nothing else, you learn that you hate cleaning up poop! I'd look for any job you could get with a local vet. Good luck!!
