      Hand sanitizer. hmmm.. I started using it when it started trending but then I begin to notice how dark the water is when I wash my hands when I get home. hand sanitizer made my hands a magnet of all the dirt I touched or accumulated through out the day. Stopped using it but use it as last resort to sanitize my hands but still look for water to get rid of the greasiness. Preferred is soap with water to remove dirt and microbes.

      I make my own eye glass cleaner like you said except I don't add any dish soap its not needed. My daughter and husband wash their glasses about once a week with soap and water because they are both very oily, I don't have that issue so I just use my solution but I use it daily.

      Vinegar
      5 gal bucket, 2 lb apples decored and cut in to four. 2 cups of sugar 4 gal of warm water. Leave it closed for a month and you have cheap vinegar. If you have access to wild apples, it will cost you only for sugar (around 2 bucks for sugar)

    I use straight rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to clean my white boards after i finish wiping them down every once in a while. It amazes me how much ink residue gets left behind and how much brighter the boards are after I finish.

    Thanks for the tips! I would also mention that rubbing alcohol can remove or damage factory finishes on metal handles, finished stainless appliances, and any painted and varnished surfaces. While this may not be noticeable in the short run over time it will dull the finish and then remove the coating in blotched sections.

    Rubbing alcohol can also be used to remove Command strips with no paint damage! Dip a straight pin, safety pin, or thin knife into rubbing alcohol and run it between the sticker and the wall. The alcohol will help dissolve the adhesive and you should be able to pull the hook away with very little damage.

    I love the convenience of a hand sanitizer. Early on l learned a "crude" but effective formula using alcohol and baby oil as the only two ingredients. I am a retired CNA/HHA, so l always had to be prepared for the unexpected. Soap and water is my preferred method of handwashing, but when it's not accessible for whatever reason, either your own formula...or a "safe" commercial formula is a good option.👩🏾

    @HalTheAl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +312

    Quick tip for disinfecting: if your rubbing alcohol isn't already diluted to 60-70%, don't use it without diluting it.
    Many bacteria and viruses, especially the ones used to "wild" outside conditions and not the comfy stable conditions of your body, have the ability to lay dormant when dehydrated. After all, they're not always going to find themselves in convenient puddles of water and have had billions of years to adapt to dry land colonisation, even if it's only temporary.
    Using a higher percentile or pure rubbing alcohol just dehydrates the cell/viral capsid without being able to get to the machinery inside it. It'll still kill some, sure, but it's not effective in the slightest and the ones it doesn't kill will go on to reproduce resistant offshoots. So it'll get less and less effective.
    When you use an alcohol diluted to 60-70%, you attain a perfect balance - just enough water so the alcohol molecules can actually pass through the membrane and into the cell, and just enough alcohol to properly kill once inside.
    My microbiology and genetics labs, which must be spotless for precision's sake if not for safety, use this dilution in a spray bottle on every surface that can't be autoclaved.

    • @khariscadogan7619
      @khariscadogan7619 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Max so whats the best alcohol to buy 100% or 70% as it comes in those two forms? I use it to clean MTB brake levers etc after brake bleeding and what are some other industrial uses for it? the other eye glass cleaner and window cleaner are good ideas. prepping for survival and first aid sanitisers are other good uses and cleaning electronics. any others? does anyone know if rubbing alcohols are used in cigarette lighter propellants and bicycle disc brake cleaning sprays?. im sure rubbing your brake discs with RA will work fine and not leave any bad residues to damages and pregnate the disc brake pads , contaminating and detroying them causing your brakes to sweak? well the only way is to try it!

    I like hand sanitizer when my hubby and I go thrifting. Stores in our area rarely have public restrooms so hand sanitizer does the trick after searching for all the bargains. I also use hand sanitizer in my craft room for cleaning stubborn messes off surfaces. It doesn't dry as fast as pure alcohol so it has more working time to desolve those stains and spills.

      As a professional window cleaner, I have to say that we never use pure alcohol to clean glass. We only add some to the water when it's cold to keep the water from freezing. No alcohol, just a simple soap and water solution, and a good squeegee, is all you need. Also, as stated above, it can etch some glass, take the coatings off, and eat into some window frames. I don't mind a little for a spot here and there, but our go to is just a correct amount of soap in the water.

      that was exactly me thinking. i used to work in a lab and one time i got ca glue on my lenses. i had to use acetone to remove the glue, but it also started to remove the coating. i had to have my lenses replaced. which also taught me to always wear eye protection (even if you wear prescription glasses) when you're working with ANY chemical; no matter how harmless you may think it is.

    After researching, I found that 70% isopropyl alcohol (30% water) is optimum for disinfecting for household cleaning and first aid , as the microbiologist has stated below. Higher or lower concentrations of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) will not do any better. The water helps open cells in cuts, to get the ipa into the cut.

      I worked in a pharmacy for 27 years when people would come in, sneezing, coughing in their hands & snot & boogers on their money & script I would rinse my hands with alcohol, until I was told NO NO because the alcohol dries out your hands then they can crack & infection get into them & germs in an open area!!

      But guess what? Hand sanitizer might kill the bad bacteria, but it also kills good bacteria, which then will weaken your immune system, which will make it easier for you to get sick, so soap and water IS always the best option

    I teach two year olds at a preschool, so if a sink is not nearby at the moment I definitely use hand sanitizer until I get to a sink and can wash thoroughly. LOL other than that i'll use it after I put gas in my car cause who knows whats with all those fumes and on that nozzle LOL! Hand sanitizer works great if there is not a sink nearby period! I definitely don't rely on it for a thorough disinfectant though. Haha! Soap and water is always a must!

    I don't use hand sanitizer all the time but it is handy.
    I keep mine by the sinks after washing my hands coming home from stores and handling meat.
    I keep a bottle in my purse and some wet wipes cause you never know... When I'm sick or my kids are I have a small spray bottle of alcohol by the bed for spraying pillows and the bed when I change sheets.
    Especially in winter...
    Thanks for the recipe for it.
    I have all the stuff to make it and now I can fill my bottles back up for the fall and winter.
    I never knew hand sanitizer was so simply made!!!
    It's a new game now I realize I can add essential oils to my alcohol bed bottles now.
    Thanks!!!

    Here's some info u may want to consider, I used rubbing alcohol for many years, but I thought it was rather pricey, even tho it does do a really good job of cleaning. However I discovered it was much less expensive to buy the biggest bottles of "hand sanitizer I could find at the dollar store, & I use the hand sanitizer for cleaning tons of surfaces. It works really well, a lot less costly, plus less odor. It cleans streak free, & cleans stuff I
    Didn't think I could clean, before I discovered the magic of cleaning with hand sanitizer. Did u ever write on the lid of a plastic container (such as Tupperware) with a black permanent marker? And afterwards u wished u could clean it off?? Use hand sanitizer, dab just a few drops of hand sani on the permanent marker on plastic container. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe it off. If it doesn't clean all the permanent marker off immediately apply a few more days, let sit 3 to 5 min & wipe it off again. The permanent marker will all come off. It won't work on anything that absorbs the marker, but it works really well on plastics, glass, & most metals.

    For my version of (EO-inspired) hand sanitizer: A scoop of melted room temperature coconut oil is good for soft hands. Whip or mix really well if the coconut oil hasn’t dissolved and dispersed enough (it can feel a little gritty until the oil melts). And I learned what works best is definitely clear aloe vera gel found in the sunblock aisle - I thought pure aloe vera juice would be better but it got all weird when I added the alcohol.
