    If the bottle looks too juvenile or tacky, I likely won't even try the fragrance. Very interesting information, thanks for sharing!

      😂 I think a lot of people are wondering that. It's a shame Pedro didn't study all age groups, but I'm guessing another PhD student in the same group might have done? Supervisors do that kind of thing... It's less work for them 🤣

      I am too . Now I try to only purchase what I truly want to wear through sampling , but hey if the bottle is also beautiful it’s always a plus ! When I was younger I would almost get mad if the bottle I adored did not house a fragrance I truly liked . I used to force myself to like things . I still adore and proudly display my fun Moschino bottles like the actual teddy bear and the windex bottle . Whether it’s the trends of the times or my tastes , but almost everything I’m attracted to scent wise ends up being an understated bottle with some pale golden juice lol. So be it ❤😂

    This study was very interesting, and I was glad to hear about it. As usual, my partner and I enjoyed discussing it over breakfast. Thank you so much for presenting the study results, Dr Smith. 🙂
    Regarding the researchers' choice of participant population, I must say, it's disheartening to see yet another example of being so unseen by the fragrance community after age 40. Even makeup marketers see us now as compared to, say, ten years ago. So I find this very puzzling about fragrance marketers.
    It makes no sense from a business perspective to be so exclusive of the second half(!) of the lifespan. After 40 it seems probable more people have a bit more disposable income.
    It's only been since 2021 that I started this joyful journey of collecting fragrance. But it did not take long for me to see that well over half of the online comments about people over 40 are that we're distasteful, and our preferences in scent accords are to be avoided. Again, this is so puzzling to me. It's true, my own tastes are eclectic in terms of enjoying different eras of fragrance trends. But overall my preferences are not dissimilar to those of younger people.
    I imagine fragrance lovers who are younger now will continue to enjoy some of the fragrance trends from the 2020s in the future, while also discovering enjoyment of future trends. This is how life goes as you get older regarding music, clothing, home decor, and many other consumable cultural products. You keep enjoying some of your old preferences, and you discover new preferences that you wish you'd experienced years ago.
    Unfortunately when those of us over 40 actually are seen by the online fragrance community, it's often reflected via commentary involving ageism. Here's a heads up: those who are younger now who are healthy and privileged enough to live longer than 40? You are going to inherit the receiving end of the ageist culture we co-create. It's unpleasant to be on the receiving end. So how about we try and change this ageist culture?
    And to business marketers who ignore those who are living in the second half(!) of life, I ask, what are you thinking? Do you want half the money? Ugh.
    Sincerely,
    Dr Blake
    🦋🧡🦋

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yes I agree. Perfume houses do need to focus on the 40+ market because those people have more money to spend on luxury items and are probably more brand loyal when they come across something that they love. Ageism is sadly everywhere though... with makeup it irks me especially! I am 40 in February 😊
      By advertising, it's clear that certain fragrance houses are focusing on people in their 20s and 30s (Mugler, YSL, Chanel, Gucci, Dior) and others are focusing on people in their 50s (Armani, Lancôme).
      Pedro's thesis title was "to what extent does packaging design influence young adults' perceptions of value of luxury fragrances" so I guess that's why he focused on the under 40s. I'm sure the supervisors will have likely given the 40+ age group to another student (or at least I hope so 🤣) as it makes an easy parallel project to run with students for supervisors. I am sorry that I don't have the results for the other study if it does exist! It would be interesting to compare!

    As someone that turns 37 on Monday, I prefer a glass bottle where the juice is apparent. I like seeing dents in a square or rectangular bottle. There are many bottles I refused to buy due to a tacky looking appearance. I do display my fragrance and they have to look intentional. I will replace a cheap looking cap without hesitation.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I also like transparent bottles, I like to see how much is left so I don't get a shock when it runs out, same with cosmetics. I think perfume is definitely an aesthetic item for a lot of peoplea dn yes a cheap cap can easily spoil a bottle's overall look. It's super rare, but I love a glass cap, they are so beautiful 😍. It totally makes sense for companies to concentrate on their design to attract people to want to try the fragrance. Thanks for watching 🥰

    Hello from Canada. I think bottle design totally influences purchase. I am considered a collector and I won’t even try CH good girl fragrances cuz I feel the shoes are so tacky! The juice might be good, but the bottle design is so not me. If I actually fell in love with the fragrance though, I have been known to decant into a different bottle. Love your videos. ❤️🇨🇦

      Hi Eugenia! Thank you! ❤️ I feel the same about the Good Girl line and actually I find even the name a little tacky. It took me ages to bring myself to consider the Decadence line too because of the bottles. I have decanted fragrances where the bottles were troublesome, e.g. I have one where the top of the atomiser fell off 🤦‍♀️ that I am considering doing that with. Thanks for watching 🥰

    Imaginary Authors are by far my favourite in terms of bottles and overall branding. They strike exactly the right balance between simple shapes and colourful but tasteful, vintage-inspired, collage-like graphics. It fits perfectly into their brand identity, especially paired with their descriptions of the perfumes as novels. It's just such good product and graphic design, I wish I could own all of them to display as little art pieces.

    Hi Claire. That was a really interesting video. 😃 I'm a bit of a fan of surveys and data...
    I've grown not to look too much at bottles with time... I don't like many of the celebrity ones. But often, they were and still are marketed to younger people. At the same time, I used to think House of Sillage cupcakes and the upside down egg looking bottles of THOO were too much and kinda tacky looking for the price. But now, I kinda like them. By collecting, ultimately, what matters to me is how I enjoy the scent that's inside all that packaging (I don't wear the bottle...).😊

      @dr.claire.perfume  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha, well you know I love data and surveys 🤣 I think Pedro was quite shocked when I asked to read his thesis 😂
      Yes exactly! And I guess this is also the argument with clones to a certain degree, no one or very few people, see your collection but you, so if you.lioe the fragrance them go for it. THOO bottles always made me scratch my head 😂 I don't think I got it for a while because I didn't realise they had been painted. I still don't get the cupcakes 🤣

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes Mugler made some stunning bottles that totally fitted with the aesthetic of the fragrances that they held. I like a maximalist bottle sometimes, but some brands get them very wrong, e.g. Nicki Minaj, Paris Hilton, probably most celebrity fragrances really 😂

    I admit bottle design can be big pull for me. There are many I like, such as Parfums de Rosine (Ballerina No 4 in particular), Régime des Fleurs, Fueguia 1833 (with the white resin caps) and their tiny and lovely 8 ml pura esencia bottles. I love Chabaud, Ormonde Jayne, Le Labo, Byredo, Cultus Artem... Vivienne Westwood Boudoir had a cool bottle...
    I do like opaque bottles.
    Imaginary Authors is a really cool brand, and a viewer who commented below articulated exactly what I like so much about the branding. Most of the brands I suggested above have a more classic, romantic look, and I love displaying them on my mirrored vanity tray.
    I blind bought Kingdom by Alexander McQueen and VC&A Midnight in Paris for the bottle designs and happen to love the juice too!
    Bond No. 9 is by far my least favorite. I think they are horrid and will never buy one simply because I think they look tacky.

    • @peachpathfinder
      @peachpathfinder 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also, Gen X here. I just turned 48. Have always been into niche. A small % of my collection is designer. Also, there is a difference between kitschy and tacky. I can appreciate kitsch novelty which is purposely tacky, such as Moschino bottles. And then there are bottles/brands that think they are nice but lack refinement and thus look cheap and tacky, such as IMO Bond No. 9.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Gosh I would absolutely to try Kingdom! Those bottles are so cool looking and futuristic. 👌
      I agree about Bond no 9. The bottle shape just seem very over the top and in many cases I really don't like the patterns on them. I agree that Ormonde Jayne has a really classic bottle design and I really like the orange colouration. They look very classic but with an interesting twist.
      I agree that Imaginary Authors have got it right, their bottles stand out and look indie without looking cheap or poorly designed. 🙂 Thanks for watching 🥰

    Not in an age group surveyed 😂. I’m 61. So a sample size of one: clear bottles, cylindrical, I’m not a great fan of over the top bottles but if I loved the fragrance I wouldn’t let it stop me from a purchase. I’m more likely to have price as a deciding factor. For example, I adore TF Lost Cherry - fragrance and bottle but would never pay the asking price.

    Hi Claire! Like others, I wouldn’t buy a perfume for the bottle but it is a factor. For example, I am not attracted to heavily embellished bottles with bright colours, bow and puff balls. I also find that I stay within a limited budget, and watch for discounts. $200 CAN is my high limit. Thanks for an interesting video!

      Hi Christina, yes for sure for me it's the fragrance that counts! A pretty bottle adds to it but price determines whether I think it's worth me buying it. There are a few really pricey ones I love but I'm just not sure are worth it for how often I would wear them when my collection is already so big... I need to downsize. Thanks for watching 🥰

    Thinking about this in regards to my first actual perfume purchase (I just bought Dolce & Gabbana Dolce Violet), I do think bottle design was a key aspect, but not the sole aspect, of my decision to get it. I'm obsessed with purple, so naturally I went to smell the purple perfume first, and I was happy to find that I really adored the fragrance itself. But the bottle itself is also very cute and appealing to me, the color is great and I think the flower and bow are cute and feminine, which is exactly what I'm going for. As for social media's influence, it didn't affect my discovery of the perfume nor my opinion on its scent, but I did scour social media for all the reviews I could find, so that might have influenced my decision to get it, although there were a few negative criticisms as well (mostly performance), so I factored that in and made sure to do it responsibly.
    In doing so, I discovered the online fragrance community and exited Plato's allegorical cave, and now this is all I can think about.

      Gosh! I always wanted to try the violet flanker... I've only tried the original and I own Garden...
      Haha, that's a study in itself! People often have one fragrance that leads them to watching I think! For me, it was Decadence. I wanted to buy it and I watched some reviews to see what other people thought of it, because I loved it... It's weird isn't it, it's almost like looking for a nod to go ahead. What should matter is that the person wanting the fragrance enjoys it! Especially when the performance is as good as it is for Decadence... Thanks for watching 🥰

      @@dr.claire.perfume Hi! Thanks for the reply!
      I definitely recommend Violet if you like things that smell like the color violet/purple! The violet flower note in it isn't the most prominent, but it's a very fun scent! I've seen people say it's a youthful scent, but I think anyone could enjoy it, and one friend actually said it smelled like an older woman's perfume. I guess it has range! Personally, I think it opens with a fun, youthful vibe, but since the vanilla base note comes through quite a bit, I think it matures over the course of wearing it. I also think it's deeper than people give it credit for. Sometimes the pear note comes through more, other times the usually weak sandalwood makes an appearance, and one friend said it smelled like wine!
      And back on the purple topic, I just got a 3ml sample of Versace Dylan Purple with Sephora points and I'm also really enjoying it! These companies really know how to appeal to women who like purple, I guess!

I also think Jeroboam's bottles are very cool and the font is particularly fitting. I love to look at my bottle of Amouage Sunshine Woman. Pedro's thesis title was "to what extent does packaging design influence young adults' perceptions of value of luxury fragrances", so I guess that's why he focused on the under 40s. I really hope that the supervisors have given the 40+ age group to another student. Supervisors sometimes split projects like that as it makes an easy parallel project to run with two students for supervisors. I am sorry that I don't have the results for the other study if it does exist! It would be interesting to compare! I agree, I can't imagine that people in their 20s are spending £200+ on niche fragrances but I might be very wrong 🤷‍♀️ I know the perfume, and the luxury product landscape in general, has changed massively since I was that age, but I think younger people maybe go for clones of expensive niche, such as Zara fragrances, rather than spending on the real thing. I have issues deciding if I like Memo, Ateliers des Ors, Floraiku, Xerjoff or Amouage bottles better. I just got into niche recently and I’m slightly above 40. There aren’t many commercials dedicated for middle aged female, though Lancome’s La vie est belle is represented by Julia Roberts, and some other older female actresses pop up as well for mostly perfume commercials. It might make sense that makeup commercials are marketed toward younger, as at this point I am more interested in skin care than makeup (though I was never really using much makeup anyway). I feel like too much makeup makes the skin older, especially later in life (though it could be that genetics add to that as well).

    There are some fragrances that just have pretty bottles, and I always keep testing them hoping I’ll like the fragrance eventually. But I never do so I never buy them. Fragrance bottles are what you look at every day on your shelf, on your try or wherever you keep them. So, sure, it is important that they look appealing. I find Dior's Homme line bottles nice to look at but they are very uncomfortable to hold: sharp edges and bulky square shape ! Armani Code has very pleasant bottles to hold: rounded edges and nice proportions. Moschino Teddy bear bottle is off putting. In accrdance with the fragrance itself. Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male bottles are the most suggestive ! When I go sampling fragrances I am mostly guided by the brand. Bottles play no role in my selection, nor in final decision making.

    I think it's interesting how much time some TH-cam reviews spend on presentation. Imba collector and it doesn't matter to me. Also collating antique bottles is a hobby not mine but a big one . Yes! I watched a review the other day and half of it was on the outer packaging and the bottle... I timed it! I was shocked. It doesn't matter that much for me. I want something functional but something attractive is a bonus. It's the scent inside that counts, but I guess it's getting people to pick it up and try it or blind buy it online in the first place. I think, with perfume, a nice bottle to make your fragrance stand out is really a lot of the battle for mainstream brands and is especially important for any product considered to be a luxury product. Very interesting results, especially about bottle colour and shape. Makes me wonder about all the tacky bottles being released these days too. 🤔 MUCH prefer cylindrical bottles myself. Ergonomics and function are at the top of my list. But I always giggle at the perceptions of that iconic TF private line bottle. 🤭 In terms of cost and materials, it's potentially one of the cheapest in the entire industry, making it a smash business success for the brand. Shame that middle eastern clone bottles weren't included as well as tactile examinations. Might've put the designer market into perspective. 💸

      Yes, I agree Middle Eastern clone fragrances go all out sometimes. I do find that the sprayers discolour though, I'm not sure whether the ones I have had from Lattafa have just all slowly leaked. Maybe that's it?
      I like something I can hold easily too and for that reason a square bottle doesn't suit as much as something rounded. I didn't realise that the Tom Ford bottles were especially inexpensive, I guess the appeal is maybe the simplicity? The caps on the orchid line eternally disappoint me. They feel very cheap.

    Although I was very interested to learn about this study, I imagine the experimental design is less than ideal, as it is based on recall, aesthetic choices devoid of costs/benefits, and speculative aspirational behaviors. While I believe that perfume bottle design plays a significant role in product selection and post-purchase satisfaction, it will always be difficult to separate this variable from the smell of the juice inside the glass.
    How about this: a new perfume shop opens and is rigged with multiple security cameras. All the perfumes are of unknown (fake) brands, and there are only five different fragrances in hundreds of different bottles (a big floral, a woody amber, a sweet gourmand, a minimalist Grojsman-accord type and a fresh nautical cologne. All customer behaviors are videotaped and analyzed. Do they touch the square bottles first? Do they fondle the sleek bottles with pink contents, or do they spritz the blotter strips from hefty green cylinders? Time interacting with, and especially purchases of, each of the five basic fragrances is then correlated with bottle design, and Hey Presto! Meaningful results.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, fab point, I also have major issues with how this survey was conducted and the questions that were asked. I think if I were running it, and had a big budget, I would definitely use a scenario as you describe, it would give the most unbiased results that would be more translatable into design prompts for a fragrance company to use for their designs depending on their target market. I think the data as it stands is interesting, but not necessarily reliable with some aspects because of the self reporting on attitudes not outcomes. Thanks for watching 🥰

    Interesting! I love glass bottles, colored and see through, I want to see a dent and I like vintage style bottles the best, ala older Dior, Lancome La nuit Tresor, Lalique, Lanvin, Nina Ricci, diamond cut Kayali with their nice caps and Dolce Peony. I don’t like super simplistic bottles or tacky bottles.
    I don’t like CH Good girl’s bottle, but I still have it because of the scent. I hate stilettos. I really enjoy many Lush scents but the black spray bottles are so depressing to me. Police skulls are tacky, but they are much cooler than the ”windex” bottles that Lush and Moschino sport. Mugler Alien is cool, even though it’s quirky. I have MJ Daisy even though I don’t like the cap. Glass and metal are nice, plastic and odd shapes are not my cup of tea at all. The Windex spray look is my absolute nemesis. Yes I meant in a shop, but I've not ever heard of the brand so I think that might be unlikely...

    Haha I think those that are willing to spend the least they want it to look like it costs more 😂 so it does not show they’ve been stingy

    Yhh most male fragrances tend to be darker.

      I guess it's personal choice isn't it? Some people want gendered, others don't think it's important. I think the general public want gendered fragrances because that's what they are used to...

      I'm well thanks. I submitted a manuscript this week and had another one come back from a journal with very few corrections, so all good with work. How are you? 🙂

      @@dr.claire.perfume Interesting that you answered about work, while I was asking about life. 😘 Still great. I'm fine. I got two new fragrances also. It took me 3 days and 2 showers to get one of them off. The longevity is really great.

      🤣 wow! That sounds even more potent than intense café, I can smell that after a shower, in fact it's really lovely to smell in the shower 👌 I think the most potent was the Lattafa oud for glory, that was days...
      Well work is pretty much all I've been doing of late, but hopefully I'll get a rest in a few weeks 😊 I did have a friend round last weekend so that was fun and bonus, it made me clean the house 🤣

      @@dr.claire.perfume Its Lattafa's Khamrah! I havent expierienced nothing like it! Its nuclear! When you shower, normally the scent gets washed up. Not Khamrah!!! It stayed the same, only weaker. But all notes were there until the 2nd shower. Its an unbelievable banger!
      Its like getting revenge on your ex, screwing your favourite MILF, seeing beewbs for the first time and eating an Banana Split while taking a crap SIMULTANIOUSLY!
      Its great that you are successfull, Doc. But I am interessted in your life.... dont know why.

      Wow, I wonder whether Khamrah has been described like that before 🤔 I've got Ameer Al Oudh Intense Oud on today and that is also very long lasting and very strong.
