I have self taught many things, including silversmithing. My next challenge is to self teach perfumery, so this is a very helpful video for me, and I will be sure to check out the rest.
Hello. I've been a synthetic organic chemist for over 25 years. I've been looking into a side hobby I could really get into. I think this is the one! Thank you for your love and time into this video. Thank you.
I've watched dozens of " how to make your own perfumes" but this is the first time I've ever seen on how REALLY can you make your own perfumes... dude, you just opened my eyes and put me on the right path to do it ❤ Thank you so much for that. Your follower from Middle East 😊
There is a perfume issue that has bothered me for some time. I come from "back in the day." I remember being on a theatre tour when I turned 18. A woman in the cast took me out, so I could choose my signature perfume. I chose Madam Rochas. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever smelled. In those days, we were also instructed to use perfume modestly on our pulse points, and rub our wrists together to bring out the scent. We would also never choose a perfume when we first used a spritz on our skin in the store. The perfume had to settle on our skin for a while before we could assess whether it suited us and the make up of our skin. Cut to modern times. First, I slowly realised the perfume I have always used no longer smelt the same. Then I noticed that modern perfumes seem to be lovely (a couple of them, anyway) then, sometimes within minutes, the perfume is no longer present. I checked this with some women friends of various ages and they complained of the same thing. I watched a video not so long ago where the advice was never to rub your wrists together...Weird. There was also no mention of letting the sample of a new perfume mature on the skin. I discovered that there is a market for vintage perfumes. This is somewhat dodgy because you don't really know what you're buying. I managed to afford some vintage Madam Rochas. The smell was back! Not only that, but the full aroma matured on my skin and lasted all day and into the next. Having the need to shower, I couldn't tell you how long it lasted. I can just tell you that it does. So, what is the deal here? I sort of concluded that modern perfumes no longer contained natural substances, but have been exchanged for cheaper chemical ones? and/or the modern perfumes contain more alcohol? There is no doubt that something is wrong with modern perfumes. Can you shed any light on this?
In general there’s no reason modern perfumes should be lower quality but there are potential reasons for what you experienced. Firstly, some base notes like oakmoss are now restricted on safety grounds. Secondly, it’s possible that people are now less patient and like perfumes that smell great straight away, which often means using less strong basenotes in favour of softer musky ones.
May I ask what the texture of your vintage perfumes are like? In my country concentrated perfumes are fairly popular which have a syrupy texture and need to be rubbed for the scent to settle into the skin and develop. They also last way longer and mostly use natural ingredients. The only downside I would say is that I've fallen in love with many modern scents and have yet to find the same dna in the concentrated perfumes.
Formulas change sometimes, either because the availability/affordability of certain ingredients change, or EU regulations decide something is unsafe. Anyway, there's no reason to buy new frags when ebay is full of classics going for less money.
Yes I have experienced the same, modern perfumes don’t last longer than an hour or two. On the other hand try old perfume oils and it lasts for a week , in our country we call them Attar or Ittar. It does not come in spray bottles but roll-ons or dab on wrist from bottle. The logic behind it is apply it in body areas that heats up more example ear lobes, behind neck, wrist etc so that the oil heats up every time you heat up and then it leaves an aroma from time to time 😊
I'm very interested in perfumery, i used to try to make new perfumes by mixing different perfumes when I was a kid lol. I love perfumes so much, people find them unnecessarily expensive but in my opinion they're really worth it because they have the ability to change our emotions in a good and remarkable way. I'll be making my own perfumes when I get money. Thank you for this amazing video and making me even more interested. Subscribed!

This is my first time experiencing such a detailed explanation delivered with a British accent about making perfume and it truly made the experience enjoyable and insightful. Your patient approach and clear articulation made it exceptionally easy for me to comprehend the information. I value the effort you put into ensuring that the content was accessible and informative
I'm an organic chemist who just made my first fragrance compound (heliotropin or piperonyl aldehyde - the essensce of heliotrope I've made by oxidative cleavage of piperic acid originally derived from piperine isolated from Piper nigrum / Black pepper) and this brought me here. This is all very interesting and never knew there is such a world to explore. The perfumery industry looks just as rich as the dye industry (I was making mostly organic dyes). I think I will provide more synthetic compounds for the amateur perfumers :)
@@sammacer Yes I know. There are alternatives like helional, but I am not planning to sell either. I was just curious how the original compound in L'Heure Bleue (Guerlain) actually smells. I was learning oxidative cleavage reactions, having piperine at hand and thus stumbled upon this compound, hence found the perfume and this video (mostly procrastinating actual learning chemistry).

super in dept!! And super interesting, thank you for your work. I really love this art, but starting is really expensive. I'm going to do it eventually
Im new to perfume world and im just starting in collecting amazing fragrances. I personally am not looking forward to be a perfumer but this video has taught me some of the basics and understanding the art of making beautiful scents. Beautiful, simple and easy to understand. Sam, i can't thank you enough. I just subbed and will look into your other videos. :)
And I loved how you conduct the teaching. Real student teachers connections. Stay blessed. And I also noticed how passionate you are about it. Wow.and you are intelligent to share books. And not just books. But a whole lot of knowledge about the contents. Kudos. When am successful, I guess won't hurt to support your channel. I started on 02/Oct/2024 with Hair and body oils. God was with me. That is why am now going deeper. Thought I could make perfumes in one day and sell th next day. I was in shock to learn that they must settle for a week for the essential oils to blend. Before mixing other ingredients. Then leave the perfume to rest for about a month before selling. Or use. Wow.
I wanted to thank you for your excellent video. It felt like a course done with love and dedication. I dint want it to end. I think that perfumery it's hard for me, but I will always see your videos. I hope you will do an online course and I believe that many people would love it. Thank you for your generosity. Ps. It could be nice to explain why perfume needs base, middle and upper tones if what last is mostly the base? And also, how do you fixate the smell. Hope to see that on your videos. Thank you again.
Thank you! I would like to do an online course in the future, but currently I don’t have the time and I would want it to be the best possible quality. Hopefully in the future. At the moment I do offer online tutoring. Base notes lasts a long time but often don’t project. Mid notes help give a perfume volume while top notes give it immediate impact upon spraying. They can also cover up base notes which don’t smell good to begin with. I made a video about making perfumes last longer on my channel!
OMG I absolutely love you!! All I've ever wanted was to learn about perfumery and this is the most direct, succinct explanation I've ever found. And I'm 63 years old...been looking a long time. Bravo and gracie mille!
@@AleForFun Funny same here its the top notes which do not last long however they are the initial impressions of the fragrance. It's as if you have moments for that first impression what will result in a possible sale.

I admire & have a great appreciation for how you teach. I wish my professors would have been more akin to using your flow style. Thanks a billion. Your video reminded me how to study and learn. Build upon the basics after you've mastered the basics!
I’m a pharmacy student, currently in my final year and I’m really thinking of being a perfumer. The only problem is that production in my country is hard, oh and the fact that I have almost zero capital😭 but I’m really really interested in going into the perfume industry when I’m done with school. If you could make a video on how to start a perfume brand from scratch, on a budget, I would really appreciate it❤
I completely understand what it’s like to be in the situation like that, I hope you can find a way into perfumery in the future! Unfortunately there’s so much to starting a brand, and I’m no expert yet, that I couldn’t really make content on it easily at present. I will say that it’s very difficult to be successful so I would encourage you to get a stable income and lean perfumery as a hobby until you’re very confident!
I love perfumes soooo much so I want to become more knowledgeable about all aspects of it. This video was very informative and well put together. Thank you so much 😊
Thank You for a very straight forward peak behind the creation curtain. I have dealt with Linda of Perfumers Apprentice for 2 decades. Their knowledge on the flavoring and purfumery is un matched. Trying to find that perfect note or base her or her staff will keep you out of the ditch but listen. This is so different that listening the staff speaking amongst themselves Can confuse a 55 even when talking about You blend and how to fuxbit
What a great video, couldn't explain it any better and gave great insight in the whole journey really. How realistic is it to try and recreate a perfume if you know the ingrediënts? For example the ingrediënts for Creed's silver mountain water are listed online but are there any more secrets or is it really a game of playing with amounts until you get close with the scent?
Thank you! Unfortunately it’s not so simple, the notes listed for marketing don’t necessarily correspond to any ingredients. Unless you’re a professional, it’s just not realistic
Thank you very much for making this video. I found the information and narrative style to be concise, clear, in a helpful order and really well paced. Thank you. There seems to be an immense degree of learning to be had. But, I appreciate how you gave just enough info without it being overwhelming. Finally, I'm wondering if there's a book that describes the results of various combinations of raw materials? Thank you again!! 🌟
I would like to describe this video as a first perfect (imo) introduction class for those who would love to become a perfumist Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge!!
Recently, reminiscing about when I found my favourite perfume which was discontinued made me curious about perfumery. I read online it was doable but a skilled craft. After watching this video, I think I'm going to turn perfumery into a hobby of mine. I'm sure every possible scent has been almost created but I'd love to make something unique, just for myself, that is set apart from the rest but fights with the big leagues. Just to add some more identity to myself socially. Thanks for the motivation in this video.
I have only about 15 halfway decent fragrance oils and 30 essentials. I've ordered Ambroxan and Iso E Super from Perfumer's Apprentice. SUPER excited to see how they enhance my blends! Side note- what's up with Myrrh, how does one dilute it for spray application if it's mostly insoluble in alcohol?
@@sammacer Hmm. I wonder why the one I have doesn't... my (admittedly, paltry) research says it's one of those heavier oils that's only about 30% soluble in alcohol. Maybe I'll have to try a fragrance oil?
Superb vid Sam. ❤ Definitely a good idea to consider the surface that you'll be working on in case of spills. From experience, wooden desks are a no-no. 😄Instead, some kind of non-porous mat or liner can be a godsend. Appreciate the book recommendations!
I recently received a set of good quality essential oils and I started to make blends. I wanted them not only to smell good, but also to have certain aromatherapeutic properties. And because my base is jojoba oil and almond oils, I also take the skincare properties into account. I know it's different from making perfumes, but similar in a way. And what I realized is that first, you have to know your scents, your ingredients, and another thing is it does require specific olfactory imagination to be able to mix scents, and I think it's not something you can learn easily. Cause you can memorize ingredients and it's properties, but imagining the fragrance of the blend is something different.
Seriously the reference books what u have suggested holds lot value in this video and the way u explained about raw materials and how to create accords also appreciable👏👏
Well done! I made the fragrance, substituting rose absolute, and it is quite pleasant. I think I can learn by playing around with the formula since there are a reasonable number of elements. Thank you for your offering to the public. Eric from Boston
Hi Eric, thank you! It was really a little improv but I tried to make it fairly “generic” so hopefully you can use it as a starting point for your own experiments, adjusting, adding and subtracting as you see fit :).
this is really really actually "how to make perfume". the content are full of needed information that I wanna learn, so thank you for this helpful video, Sir!! now, I should get much of money to learn all about fragrance:]
This gives you Base to the accords related to the perfumery! True crimely combined for the novices without any pre-knowledge of the world of perfumery!👍
Thank you so much for the basic introduction. I want to make a perfume for myself, but I wasn't sure what else goes into a perfume besides the nice smelling stuff. I knew about alcohol, but I wasn't sure if glycerin had to be added, or something else... you made it much simpler for me to go ahead and try. It's for me anyways, so if it's not fantastic, it's okay. :)
Great stuff. I love perfumery, and I just find this type of knowledge intriguing. Tell us more and about atomization as well (where to get the best or right atomizers). I have been hearing how so much focus can also be directed to that feature part of perfumery more especially on the utilization side of things.
thank you, this is really awesome! i was just trying to learn something about mixxing scents because i want to make my own nail oil for my salon. and when i stumbeld on this it almost want to make my own perfume! i will use this knowledge for my oils!
Just a note, De Hekserij is dutch. Whenever you see ij or ei together, it's like a Y. You'd pronounce it in english like we pronounce the i in words like "ride" (wide i) with a twang of a as in, well, "as" (wide a), or the y in "why". Not De Hekse-rich, but De Heksery.

Or use. Wow.
Thank you! Good luck with your own fragrances :)
I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge with the public 😊
Short, comprehensive, filled with resources for everybody. 10/10 video.
This is the video i've been needing for so long! Wow, you really break it down SO WELL. Thank you so much! Please continue doing such great work!
Thank you, much appreciated :)
thank you i actually could make a thesis about perfumes
This is an incredible resource - well researched and well presented in a straightforward way.
Thank you so much Sam. You are amazing in explaining in a simple way.
What a perfect introductory video! Thank you for all your help. You're an absolute gem
Thank you!
This was so simple and helped make the jump into perfumery so much more simple! Thank you for such an amazing guide!
@@sammacer
Thank you very much. I will search your channel for the video.
OMG I absolutely love you!! All I've ever wanted was to learn about perfumery and this is the most direct, succinct explanation I've ever found. And I'm 63 years old...been looking a long time. Bravo and gracie mille!
Glad it was helpful!
Good information I’ve been blending for 5 years and still continuing to learn. It’s a lifelong journey
❤️
Hardest is always make good top notes for me, as base often smell good
@@AleForFun Funny same here its the top notes which do not last long however they are the initial impressions of the fragrance. It's as if you have moments for that first impression what will result in a possible sale.
I wanted to thank you for your excellent video.

Informative, understandable, straightforward- an amazing guide for beginners. Congratulations and thank you for your efforts.
I made perfume and sold well
Gracias Sam, por compartir tu experiencia y conocimiento en perfumería con los de hispano hablantes.
I love perfumes soooo much so I want to become more knowledgeable about all aspects of it. This video was very informative and well put together. Thank you so much 😊
Thank you!
This is so different that listening the staff speaking amongst themselves
Can confuse a 55 even when talking about You blend and how to fuxbit
Excellent crash course of parfumery ! And quite contagious one at that ! great job ! Well done !!!
Thanks!
Youre doing great for the perfumery world. Great content!
Cheers, much appreciated
You are a wonderful teacher, Sam. This was a delightful, watchable, pleasant and well organized video.
Thank you
I would like to describe this video as a first perfect (imo) introduction class for those who would love to become a perfumist
Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge!!
Thank you!
I'm a beginner and learned a lot here that I had tons of questions about. Thank you so much!
Thank you I will now never use this information
You should use myrrh resinoid or essential oil, they dissolve fully in alcohol
@@sammacer Hmm. I wonder why the one I have doesn't... my (admittedly, paltry) research says it's one of those heavier oils that's only about 30% soluble in alcohol.
Maybe I'll have to try a fragrance oil?
Honestly, this video is the best on the topic...
Superb vid Sam. ❤ Definitely a good idea to consider the surface that you'll be working on in case of spills. From experience, wooden desks are a no-no. 😄Instead, some kind of non-porous mat or liner can be a godsend. Appreciate the book recommendations!
Yea for sure. A cheap ikea desk is working well for me and you can buy a new top cheaply if it gets really really bad
I want to make perfumes because I want to build a company one day.
Seriously the reference books what u have suggested holds lot value in this video and the way u explained about raw materials and how to create accords also appreciable👏👏
I'm glad it helped
I clicked out of curiosity now am hooked on this channel. you teach amazing bro
Glad you like my channel
this is really really actually "how to make perfume". the content are full of needed information that I wanna learn, so thank you for this helpful video, Sir!! now, I should get much of money to learn all about fragrance:]
Thanks, glad it helped!
Beautiful content. Subscribed! Thank you so much for sharing, Sam.
This gives you Base to the accords related to the perfumery! True crimely combined for the novices without any pre-knowledge of the world of perfumery!👍
This blew my mind. You're such a good teacher, thanks for your time!
Thank you! My pleasure
14:30 When he starts flexing (JK, great video!).
You are friggin awesome dude. I learned so much and now I don't feel lost and finally I get the hard to define issues I've been fighting.
Really glad that I could help :)
This feels illegal to be free
Exactly
Just make sure to follow like subscribe and comment, that way TH-cam can pay him. 👌
Oh my goodness… I have been searching for a channel like this for so long abd now I find it!
Recently found myself wanting to make my own EDP’s. Discovered your channel & it’s absolutely brilliant. Thanks for sharing…
P.S. I subscribed 👌
I’ve been looking for years for a perfume video this is very informative!
Thank you for such an in-depth introduction into perfume making and for suggesting the books... really appreciated!
Glad it was helpful!
thank you ❤️ you’re awesome for making this
Thank you so much for the basic introduction. :)
I used to make perfumes as a kid for family for Christmas gifts. Thank you for letting me relearn this art.
Great stuff. I love perfumery, and I just find this type of knowledge intriguing. Tell us more and about atomization as well (where to get the best or right atomizers). I have been hearing how so much focus can also be directed to that feature part of perfumery more especially on the utilization side of things.
I am very greatful to be part of the listeners and follow. Am new to this field and Cosmetics. I will always want your deep learning.
Imran Gems_ I'm working on gemstones mostly. Here watched the very first lesson of Perfumery. Hopefully could complete the course. Love it.
This is a great video for anyone wants to know something about perfumery. Great job!! 🙏
thank you, this is really awesome! i was just trying to learn something about mixxing scents because i want to make my own nail oil for my salon. and when i stumbeld on this it almost want to make my own perfume! i will use this knowledge for my oils!
Thank you I will watch you video later. I want to create a Sahelian perfume but have no idea how to process ❤
thank you sam for your sweet information about how to make your own perfume...
Amazing, simple and clear. Perfumery made simple thank you for this.
Thank you!
I have no idea how your video popped up in my feed, but as a fine artist who has been very depressed about ai art, I needed this today 😌
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Recently went to Egypt and bought some oils. As soon as I got back to the states I started watching your videos and bought some EAS40B200. Just finished making my first bottle and I believe it came out great 👌🏽 skin didn’t burn so 10/10 😂
I meant to purchase 190 proof but I must’ve added 200 by accident. All good though
The best presentation I've ever seen
Best video I’ve seen for exposing perfume !!! Thank you
Thank you!
